imagine one film shot in 1965, one shot in 1985, and one shot in 1995, then overlapped and projected at the same time – that’s the only way i can come close to describing the aesthetic mixture of practical effects and cartoonish cgi that this is. a super silly old school throwback that i found intensely pleasing. plus the heroes are a sweet father/smartass 10 year old daughter team that chase godzilla around in a van like he’s a tornado, and even though the final battle is kinda anticlimactic, godzilla’s opponent is too hilariously weird to be disappointed about it. beer+popcorn-tastic.

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Ping poing between 2.5 and 3, but I’d leave it as it is now. A weak start to a new era, and probably the weakest of them all so far. It has its charm. Differently from the past era, this one leans a little more into the campiness with a less threatening-looking Goji (those googly eyes lol), with the exception maybe of the way they still film him to look pretty imposing. CGI was a bit rough, though. The villain of the film looks pretty dope (Orga, I mean), cartoonish, sure, but I guess it fits the tone of the film. The family and human stuff was neat. There’s some of the campiness with the fam, and…

Don’t superimpose Godzilla in a real city! No one likes that! I understand it’s hypocritical of me to ask for more focus in a series whose best entries work so well because of their wide-ranging scope, but damn it, I want more focus in my Godzilla films! There’s no reason that the story has to be split into so many characters whose plotlines have so little to do with each other. It was less painful back in the 70s! It seems so obvious to focus on one core group of characters and see the Godzilla attack from their perspective, which would give it more of a sense of scope, but every film that hints at going down that path panics…

even more than his own the lost world, this is like if steven spielberg made a godzilla film, full of ominous wonder and earnest spectacle. an extremely compelling mix of early-CGI wonk, fantastic practical effects & compositing, fast-pacing, likeable characters, and an over-the-top english dub that i think actually improves the film (the dub team for this was specifically trying to invoke the humor & gawky charm of 1960s american dubs of kaiju films, and as a fan of those it’s a riot to listen to). i’ve found that the millennium-series godzilla films have always been underrated among kaijuheads and i’ve never understood why, this remains a favorite of mine ever since i was a child and getting into godzilla stuff for…

A Walk Amongst Monsters #82 “Godzilla is in us and in everybody’s mind.” Godzilla is forced back into work thanks to an American wannabe trashing his reputation. So this might be one of my more controversial Godzilla opinions? I know this film has its fans but man, I did not have a good time rewatching this. I was this close to dropping it down a half star. Sheesh. One of my biggest issues is also one I did not expect to have. All the action is so quiet! Scenes with Godzilla rampaging wouldn’t have an intense soundtrack accompanying him and Godzilla himself would make very little noise. He’s so silent in this when he’s usually incredibly talkative. Not only that…

Let’s face it, this film exists almost solely because of the shitty American 1998 Roland Emmerich vehicle that shamed the Godzilla name and Japan felt the need to reclaim everyone’s favorite nuclear lizard for their own country once more. While I’m glad they did this as Roland Emmerich and everyone involved with that shitastic TriStar picture should be ashamed of themselves, but this reclamation is a bit of a bloated mess with about three different kinds of Godzilla pictures going on here as the aesthetic of crappy CG and practical effects makes for a weird collage of a movie that wants to be too much and ends up going in circles for most of its running time. For a film…

Not too big an overstatement to say that seeing this theatrically was the greatest night of my life. The Godzilla suit, so rubbery and tactile… the model Tokyo cityscape, so intricate and detailed… the spacecraft, rendered in CGI that looks like an early test design for Terminator 2’s liquid metal…. this is a movie full of great junky beauty.

Wildly over-stuffed. Too much narrative for its own good. Somewhere, below this half-baked mess, sits a Spielberg-esque cute father/daughter expedition film. On top of that, though, lies a cheesy, over-saturated take on Godzilla that tries to tackle just about everything it can in its quick runtime, never giving us that fully fleshed-out feeling. For some reason I still enjoyed my time with this. Rather cozy atmosphere.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 40 of 46 In the fifties, we saw an explosion of interest in science fiction films. People swarmed into theaters, as if compelled by some insectoid hive mind, to witness fantastical tales of irradiated monsters and extraterrestrial invaders. Meanwhile, in Japan, Toho jumped on the science fiction bandwagon, rapidly cranking out giant monster movies and alien invasion movies. While we had seen the occasional giant monster that was extraterrestrial in origin, like the Ymir in 20 Million Miles To Earth, giant monsters were typically a result of nuclear radiation. These types of films were usually a commentary on the dangers of unchecked scientific progress and the hubris of man. They rarely had anything to do with…

It’s not the best Godzilla introduction but its a fun time. It’s not my favorite but I do like Godzilla’s redesign he’s so spikey and angry and I like the concept of Orga and how he changes through the movie. Some great shots that show off the scale in this one. Awful CGI and they made Goji’s roar sound like an elephant too much

This movie seems so just like bland. Like toho was afraid of trying anything new after tristars Godzilla. Well besides the vore scene.

This would have hit hard if I saw it upon initial release. Godzilla looks fabulous, especially in comparison to the then-recent US flick. And the story wants to say something about people and Kaiju and information. I just wish the proceedings had more urgency.

“Orgas in the house!” Is it bad that this might be one of my favorite Godzilla movies? Yeah it’s CGI is pretty shlocky for the most part ( you should give it some pity though, it was a foreign film made 4 years after Toy Story came out) and the monster enemy doesnt fully appear until the last thirty minutes, but to me this is a really fun time. The Godzilla design is badass, with the big G having a…

Peak father-daughter activities if you ask me! I like the vibe of this movie: a storm-chaser-like father and his daughter following Godzilla is a refreshing idea, even if that angle doesn’t get explored as much as I would’ve liked. Most of the focus is on the alien plotline, something I’ve come to expect from the franchise. But the whole UFO subplot is pretty forgettable, and it sidelines Godzilla a little too much. At least the big G has some great…

Godzilla is in every one of us After the immense backlash from 1998’s American adaptation, TOHO decided to take matters back into their own hands and prove what Godzilla should be like. Did they succeed? This is certainly a family oriented film, focused on a father-daughter relationship, with the story centered on the original conflict between studying Godzilla or fighting him. Add a prehistoric alien monster and cartoonish military antagonist to the mix and you get a rather amusing watch,…

“Why does he keep saving us?” “Maybe because Godzilla is inside all of us?” *proceeds to burn down everything in sight* I watched this one a bunch as a kid, so the nostalgia runs deep, but looking back, this is a pretty rough watch. Human stories that are uninteresting and a very clunky boss fight at the end. It seems like a step back from the heisei era. The introduction of CGI was not well done, and at times completely…

26 years since seeing this on the big screen, and it’s still a great time. Lots of callbacks *and* a bit of shade thrown at the 1998 Emmerich film, which is all in good fun. The final Godzilla movie I ever saw dubbed for my first viewing. Takes its time really getting going, and slow-rolls the appearance of its antagonist monster, Orga. The final 20 minutes are great, but it sure does make you wait to see the Kaiju battle…

“Godzilla is a monster from our own heart” It’s cheesy but that’s part of the charm 🤓 This was my first ever Godzilla movie that I watched. I saw this for the first time when I was 5 and I filled the dvd with scratches for how much I’ve rewatched this movie back then. I can’t really recommend this. I have a lot to say about this so apologies. For starters, the English dub was the only way I could watch this, and that massively undermined my enjoyment of this movie. While not as bad as the 60s dubbing, this movie had really great characters and some honestly hilarious moments that were butchered by the bad voice acting. I think the human plot may have been one of the better ones but the dub…

A film with an intense identity problem The grand beginning of a new era of Godzilla films is an absolute slog to sit through. In an effort to appeal to a broader international audience, Toho loads Millenium up with all kinds of poor CG effects and tracking composite shots that looked awful then and look worse now. It’s especially sad because Toho has done excellent compositing work since the Showa era, but they take dozens of steps back here. The…

For the turn of the century, this one feels like a greatest hits compilation of various tones, styles, and elements from previous eras. It is also an effective answer to the first American attempt at a Godzilla (1998).

The human story isn’t the most memorable but the film still has great Godzilla scenes

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. The technology: Serious downgrade. This is Showa-era boring. The CGI is not yet advanced enough at this point to replace practical. And Godzilla is hardly present for most of the film.

Classic as a child, did not bode well for the movie that despite my countless rewatches, all I remembered is the last 20 minutes (which was still great). Orga was and continues to be a personal favorite.

Godzilla Minus Eleven This movie slipped massively now that it isn’t the only early Godzilla movie I have seen. The villain is not good. Not enjoyable, not visually intriguing, just total meh. The Godzilla design is not great. The use of CGI is very primitive and looks bad. The characters are a decent bit of fun, but the emotional lines they try to lace throughout just do not hit. The fighting is dark and hard to see. Somehow, because the fighting is bad, this is a blessing. This is a massive downgrade for the series, and I am worried for this era.

I can’t believe it. This could be the end of our civilization. You really call this civilization? Anything we don’t understand, we try to destroy. Diary. Despite what I said in my entry for Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), it turns I was incorrect about how many Heisei-era Godzilla films appear on the combination of Criterion Channel and Netflix. In fact, only two older Godzilla films were added to Netflix: Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters…

Assisti a ‘Gojira 2000: Millennium’.

When scientists find a mysterious stone at the bottom of the ocean and Godzilla wreaks havoc once again, humanity is on the brink of destruction. Only Shinoda, a former scientist has a plan for saving the planet. A very dark and amazing Godzilla movie and the first in the millennium series. Loved the plot and the characters in here as well as the phenomenal Godzilla design which is one of the bests in my book. Also the opponent is a clever choice and plays into the Y2K theme of the movie. All in all I had a blast with this movie! Great kaiju entertainment

I love how they’re not even trying to explain how Godzilla has yet again returned anymore. Nobody even mentions that he famously died just fours earlier. He’s just there. He’s always been there. Don’t question it. Other than that, it’s okay but pretty basic. I would have expected more from his comeback, but hopefully the next movies will ramp up the crazyness.

A lackluster start to the millenium era of Godzilla. The plot is pretty boring, probably the most dull of all the alien invasion godzilla films. The addition of cgi and green screen takes away from the charm of the elaborate sets too. Characters are equally whatever as well. There’s some fleeting moments of excitement, and while it’s a major upgrade over the tristar adaptation, there’s a lot left to be desired

“Godzilla is inside each one of us.” ….well, that’s certainly a quote. This exists mostly as a middle finger to Godzilla 98 by emphasizing how Godzilla is super powerful and badass, and it accomplishes its goals. Orga’s a cool kaiju, and I wonder if he’ll ever appear in another movie.

Just a very unremarkable Godzilla film. This one was created after everyone hated Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla (correct) but the “yeah, I guess it’s about time we do another one of these” energy really shows. Is it better than the American one? Yes, absolutely, it’s competently made but there’s just not really any interesting ideas here. The suit isn’t bad but I don’t care for the mix of CG and practical in this one. Once the other creature stops being a…

My obsession with orange night sky aestetics started with this movie. As a movie it’s fine, as a Godzilla movie its a huge step up in cinematography and fx. I may have hated Takayuki Hattori’s last few scores but this movie has a legitimately incredible soundtrack. I still listen to it from time to time to get some inspiration. An unforgettable checkpoint in my life cause I saw this in theaters at 5 years old. The slickness of the movie is a selling point. I’m only harping on that angle cause the last few Godzilla movies prior to this didn’t look anywhere this good.

(Japanese Version) Okawara directed my favorite Heisei-era Godzilla movies, so I was confident that he’d be the right fit to bring the King of the Monsters into the new millenium, but Godzilla 2000 is a weird one. It continues the darker tone of vs. Destoroyah but lacks much of the pacing that made it work so well. I don’t know what is it with these re-introduction entries that don’t work for me, but I feel like they lack the impact…

Loved the opening sequence! Such a strong start for just a decent movie. The dynamic with the scientist and his family was cute, but it’s one of the less memorable stories in the franchise. Orga was also way too cool to not show up at all until the last 20 min! Just an awesome design that will join the likes of Biollante and Megalon as a kaiju that 200% needs to make another appearance someday.

pretty bummed about this one! really killer new godzilla design and some fun suitmation but just in service of one of the dullest plots of the franchise in a bit. very fun ideas toward the very end, but the fight itself is oddly sluggish and awkward in a way that stuck out much more than usual. i think that the blend of digital effects with the practical can be a little hit or miss but it gives this era a pretty unique taste and i really hope that the future installments are able to find their footing a little more because there’s certainly potential here.

I always took Katagiri’s resignation to his fate at Godzilla’s hands to mean he has realized that his life’s mission, his obsession to destroy Godzilla, to “best” Godzilla, is a futile one. Godzilla is a force of nature beyond any human’s ability to conquer. Not just that, but Godzilla had just single-handedly destroyed an invading alien force that was also beyond man’s abilities to defend itself from. Katagiri sees that Godzilla completely outclasses him, humanity, and even forces beyond his…

Just wish the aliens were a bit more interesting. Also has the two most irresponsible parents ever in this movie.

Godzilla 2000 was the first Godzilla film I saw in theaters as a very young boy. So there’s an inescapable nostalgia to this one that I fully admit clouds my judgment. No one will ever get me to dislike this film. It’s simply impossible. Of course, I saw the dubbed version when I was young. Nowadays, I watch the original Japanese cut. And I still love the opening to this film. Godzilla appears almost immediately, and he goes on a rampage…

Godzilla vs whimsical orb was definitely the way to kick of the 21st century 👍

A dull and lifeless start for the Millennium series after the Heisei era had so many bangers. I think Japan was so miffed by Emmerich’s Godzilla that they decided to try making a Godzilla AND Independence Day film at once, yet failing spectacularly at creating something compelling of either. The final shot of this was metal as hell though, and hopefully portends that the franchise is about to hit an upswing.

In this godzilla movie, godzilla fights an alien ship and then the alien inside the ship. I was not a fan of the vfx or the action, and there isn’t a whole lot of story in this one. The ending was nice though

T-Minus Zero: A Godzilla Marathon Week Twenty Four The one in which Godzilla mostly fights a giant, flying bedpan. I dunno, there are certainly some redeeming qualities here, but this is lower tier for me. It’s too much of a mixed bag and the CGI does it no favors. I guess it serves as a palette cleanser after the American one, but it doesn’t really bring much flavor to the series

I can imagine some poor VFX worker at Toho in 1999, crouched over a computer that’s taking days to render CGI that looks like playstation 1 graphics, sweating, head in hand, going “Oh God Oh God Oh Fuck How am I supposed to make this comparable to American CGI!?” A new Godzilla for a new era as they proudly say in the tagline; too bad it’s a rather lacklustre new start. And I guess people agreed because I hear they…

The start of a new Godzilla series, and it already seems like they’re running out of ideas. Doesn’t bode well.

so cool in terms of the new Godzilla design and even the design for Orga and the set peices but I’m not a big fan of orga plot wise or these characters. some of the cgi is silly and the shot matching isn’t great as even previous films but it improves heavily over time. the pacing in the entire film especially the final battle was absolutely a drag. there were some great practical effects but overall I could see this being boring for most

Godzilla vs the giant metallic nostril. One of my favorite versions of godzilla, unfortunately I can’t say the same about his counterpart for the movie. It’s an interesting idea, just a bit funky. The practical effects in this movie are great, but when supplemented with it’s terrible cgi, it creates some goofy images. Luckily, as the movie progresses, the cgi seems to be used less and less and the big fight is mostly practical effects. Fun movie, but if I had to guess what year it was made, I don’t think I’d ever say 1999.

This review is very nostolgic. Just as I got into the Kaiju movies, wanted to watch movie I caught a glimpse of at family friends house in December 2009 possibly. The movie had an alien in it and they introduced me to the Kaiju genre ever since but gave me Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla of 2002, I thought it was the 1974 version, but more on that in another review. Wanted to see the one I saw a little at their…
