The Millenium Era has been a reboot of the franchise each time out, ignoring all previous films before it, save for the 1954 originating film, because this era simply cannot decide what direction it wants to take our loveable lizard. This is the first time in this (at the time) 25 title franchise, that an entry has made me reevaluate what exactly a Godzilla film can and should be. Everybody’s friendly neighborhood nuclear lizard is back for the kind of kaiju porn we’ve all grown to love if you love to tune into this sort of picture, but there’s just something about this one that sets it apart from the rest that have come before it. Over the years Godzilla…

80 Love the approach to Godzilla here: white demonic eyes, motivated by a soulful revenge, full of aggressive rage. There’s a scene where he takes out three or four circling aircraft just for the hell of it. So fucking awesome. And the other monsters are pretty cool, too. All around, a highlight of the Millennium series.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #85 “In America they called it “Godzilla” but Japanese scholars disagree.” A sick burn towards 1998’s Godzilla before the opening credits? Well-played film, well-played. If this and the Heisei Gamera trilogy are anything to go by, Shusuke Kaneko should direct most Kaiju films. He brings such humanity to them while also depicting the kaijus as awe-inspiring forces of nature and destruction. How he hasn’t done more films is a mystery to me. GMK really showcases what the Millennium series has to offer. They’re all standalone films that only recognize the original as canon allowing the directors to do pretty much anything they want. That’s how you get something as unique to the Godzilla mythos as this.…

Whoa! This one made me reevaluate what a Godzilla movie could be. While this is true of each one I’ve seen, this was the first time I thought to myself, “Wow, it’s really great that Toho gave its directors so much freedom to reinterpret the Godzilla mythos roughly on a sliding scale between horror and superhero.” The results have varied wildly over the last 60 years, and within them so far this is the one most truly into the horror genre, even compared to the original film. The Godzilla of 1954 had to be far subtler, both to convey its postwar message and to work as a genuine horror film, but it was really something else compared to the later…

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! The best of the “”Attack”-titled series. At the very least, it ranks among the best. We get some actual sheer destruction where grandpas aren’t saved from being stomped to death in their homes by mighty Goji’s paw. That was really funny. A lot of people get crushed by stones or buildings. Chaos everywhere. Also, you get a 98 Godzilla diss. The action is great. Everyone hasn’t looked this badass in a minute, especially Mothra and Ghidorah. The human stuff makes sense and doesn’t feel like a distraction to the good Godzilla stuff but it adds to the overall story. A fresh new take on Godzilla? What madness is this! The smartest thing Writer/Director Shusuke Kaneko does is treat the material like any other Godzilla movie. The Big-G shows up in broad daylight, it’s split between human and the military, and there’s a fair amount of monster dust-ups. It’s the details of the matter. Godzilla’s unsettling redesign with the milky white eyes. The sudden personal murders in the mayhem. The fact that Godzilla is powered by the souls of the angry dead and all the other monsters are now protectors of the earth. The wheels aren’t re-invented when it comes to the human stuff, but it’s involving, and the final suicide mission is pretty gripping. King Ghidorah is a hero here! And he has as much use as King Ceasar! He gets knocked out for the count THREE TIMES and has to be revived with different magical properties.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 42 of 46 Wow! So, that was fuckin’ crazy. I really wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did. This film manages to flip the Godzilla franchise on its head. Black is white. Up is down. It’s chaos and anarchy. Godzilla has always oscillated between hero and villain. However, even as a villain, Godzilla never felt evil. He’s just a force of nature, indifferent to the suffering he causes. He’s no more evil than a tsunami or an earthquake. The same, however, cannot be said of the Godzilla in this film. This Godzilla feels more mean-spirited. Almost demonic. He even has the white pupil-less eyes that are often used as a shorthand for demonic…

Surprisingly good. The Millennium series gets some deserved flak for the mixing of CG with the classic minis and suits, but they work out pretty well here. The direction they took Big G this time is great. One of the better suits/designs in my opinion. Wanton destruction every 15 minutes. Kinda feels like “Aw shit, Orga and Megaguirus didn’t do too well, break glass and bring back the classic monsters”. Poor Ghidorah gets the “RPG boss gets recruited into the…

A somewhat grimdark version of a Godzilla movie that works anyway, this one finds our big friend being possessed by the ghosts of the people the Japanese killed in the Pacific in WWII. This turns him evil, and it’s up to Mothra, Ghidorah, and an uncredited Baragon to protect Japan and stop the rampaging Godzilla. To go along with that pretty depressing setup, the film has absolutely no compunctions about killing people off left and right. Godzilla always accidentally kills…

Second movie of my second Godzilla night This one is fun. The movies with the suits don’t work for me and while this one is better than most of those, it’s still one of those. It has moments where it incorporates early 2000s CGI that shake things up but it’s all still pretty goofy. Definitely not the movie’s highlight. What really carries this movie is surprisingly the solid human story being told of a reporter trying to chase success. I enjoyed the way it was presented and it helped that the performances were as endearing as they were.

Godzilla is an absolute asshole in this movie. Laying waste everywhere he goes as he terrorizes Japan. The movie does a real solid job of taking its time to build up the anticipation of seeing Godzilla as well as the other monsters. The destruction feels personal as we often follow civilians at the ground level before, during and after attacks. The way it ties myth, spirits and those who’ve died in the past to these monsters was interesting. Added a bit of dramatic weight to the silliness (like that couple who want to take a picture before running for their life).

Bravo.

It was fun seeing a bit of reimagining of the Godzilla mythos, even if this was like the 4th or 5th time they retconned everything but the original film. The monsters as these ancient guardians of the earth was pretty cool, I’d be interested to see them use that sort of backstory again sometime. Other than that, pretty straightforward with a lot of great action scenes!

It’s very funny to me that at the beginning of this movie they poke fun at the ’98 American film and then after it comes one of the best Godzilla movies. I’ve always loved this one, it was one of the first I ever saw too.

This is probably my favorite godzilla movie after minus 1. Its still got the great analog feel of actors in costumes but the effects feel pretty polished like newer entries. Yuki is a really cool human mc and I love tve more mystical aproach to the kaiju. Its a fresh take from the standard mutated prehistoric creature/alien. +Baragon is really cute

We Regret to Inform You It Is Also Baragon. it’s so funny how even in a godzilla movie where ghidorah is technically the good guy he’s still a pathetic little freak. really wish i liked this one more because i’m a big advocate for kaneko’s gamera trilogy but this one’s attempts at realistic brutality and coldheartedness really fail to lift off when the godzilla looks so fucking doofy. excellent, excellent camera and lighting work and all that but it’s in service of some kinda middling zilla. what can you do

Definitely one of the better Godzilla films. Reallyyy fun how evil they made him in this one. He’s been the antagonistic force in movies before but this one really seems to revel in the destruction and death it causes. I know I’m not the only one who wishes Baragon was replaced by Anguirus but I cannot deny how cute Baragon is. His big floppy ears and affinity for digging give him almost puppy-like qualities. King Ghidorah gets to play the…

I had to pause during the dramatic fight between Mothra and Godzilla and then between King Ghidorah and Godzilla to figure out what the music reminded me of. It was “Phantom Train” from the final fantasy vi soundtrack

Legend has it if you successfully say the full title of this movie three times fast in a mirror, Ishirō Honda will show up in the reflection and angrily complain about the shie victory dance scene in Invasion Of The Astro Monster. First act dragged and lost it some points, not fully sure how I feel about the new metaphorical take on Godzilla here, and man even when he’s the good guy, Ghidorah is an overated chump; but I can’t…

I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I did the first time. Godzilla was so menacing and I love his design. The human part was fairly weak, I didn’t care about the reporter lady at all, but the score, effects, and monster fights were amazing

It is a collection of lingering thoughts. The souls of countless people who fell victim in the Pacific War have congregated in the body of Godzilla. It’s yet another reboot for the only franchise with more do-overs than Halloween. Godzilla turns heel so hard that He knocks over hospitals and nukes cities just because. He is the screaming souls of millions dead; Captain Godzilla shows no mercy. Many of the classic foes and acquaintances return to oppose Him, but even…

It should really be called Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, if you think about it.

So I’d intended to watch Mothra 1961 because of the Solar Eclipse that occurred in Western Europe yesterday (if you’ve played Terraria you’d know) But when I went to stream it, it played this movie instead?! Then I watched half of it before getting busy, and then watching the other half again after I got accepted into university today makes this a quasi solar eclipse-uni acceptance special! Not that I’m complaining! Mothra is based as usual by having her first…

Ryo Kase jumpscare! The main character of this one being a slightly goofy drunken disaster girl at first is a fun change of pace for a franchise known for leading with mostly male reporters or scientists. It was probably wise that they didn’t characterize poor Chiharu Niiyama that way for the duration, but… what if? Too much for a plot that already hinges on a triad of ancient guardian deities trying to trios tag team a nuclear lizard? 2001 was…

one of the coolest Godzilla films out there and a definite highlight for the era. it has iconic atomic breathe sequences, a unique score, and a relentless villainous Godzilla. the addition of Mothra and Ghidorah is the cherry on top. I love how ruthless Godzilla is and even the scene where he takes out the pilots and ghidorah power up scene from mothra. the effects take a significant leap forward compared to previous films in the millennium era and I…
