I ain’t getting no younger. Time just goes by and then… then one day… one day you just get older and suddenly… you find yourself… all alone. God’s Gun is a late Italo western with Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance produced by Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan before they created Cannon. I was instantly hyped, but my expectations were way too high I guess. The story is a collection of standard western tropes, but that’s totally fine. The main problem is that it takes way too long until something happens. When a group of bandits and outlaws terrorizes a little town, it needs help from the outside. A young boy looks for a former companion of the priest who…

Mine is the vengeance, sayeth the lord. “God’s Gun” is a late addition to the spaghetti western genre, although technically, it doesn’t qualify as one since it was filmed entirely in Israel for Golan-Globus Productions. By 1976, the spaghetti western was struggling, and this film was the second of two movies shot in Israel starring Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett, the first being “Kid Vengeance.” Sam Clayton (Jack Palance) and his gang ride into Juno City with chaos in their minds. They assault the town’s women and fatally stab an old man before leaving as quickly as they arrived. The local sheriff is a useless drunk, and the judge is a coward. Both of them refuse to pursue the…

By the late 1970s, very few spaghetti westerns were being made, in Italy or anywhere else. And, while a handful of those late entries do the genre justice, the majority that chrome out during this era were average at best, and often worse. God’s Gun is an example of the ones that are worse. Shot in Israel alongside Kid Vengeance, with the same stars (I will not be watching that one), God’s Gun stars Lee Van Cleef twice: first as a preacher (Father John), and then as a retired gunfighter (Lewis). The big bad is outlaw leader Sam Clayton, played by a completely unhinged Jack Palance, and 15-year-old pop star and teen heartthrob Leif Garrett (who is shirtless an uncomfortable…

Sam Clayton (Jack Palance) and his gang ride into Juno City looking for trouble. They’re a bad bunch and immediately set about bullying, assaulting, and raping the town’s citizens. The town’s religious leader, Father John (Lee Van Cleef), stands up to the band of outlaws, but things don’t break his way. Eventually, word gets to the priest’s brother (Van Cleef, in a double role), a retired gunslinger who sets out to even the score. Released in 1976, God’s Gun was produced by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, only a couple of years before the pair formed Cannon Pictures. It’s tamer than the kind of pictures they’d become known for in the eighties, but God’s Gun carries some of the hallmarks…

Jack Palance’s gang of bandits takes over a small western town, and the only line of defense is gun-wielding preacher Lee Van Cleef and plucky teen Leif Garrett. When one of them gets gunned down, all hope is lost for the townsfolk… or is it? It seems I simply will not learn my lesson about watching early Golan-Globus productions. They may just be my least favorite filmmakers of the ’70s. I’m not a huge Cannon fan in general, but at least there’s some liveliness to their ’80s nonsense. These early movies are almost uniformly bland, ugly, and terribly constructed, although the action sequences are sometimes OK. You know those former marquee actors who starred in a ton of bottom-of-the-barrel genre…

The last of Lee Van Cleef’s western vehicles made in the wake of his For a Few Dollars More star turn. Having had a horrible time with his other Israeli western, Kid Vengeance, I wasn’t sure I wanted to wrap my Van Cleef run on this low point. Then I noticed his Sabata collaborator Gianfranco Parolini was behind the director’s chair, and along with the usual bravado of Menahem Golan, how could I go wrong? Richard Boone was of a similar mindset: “I’m starring in the worst picture ever made. The producer is an Israeli and the director is Italian, and they don’t speak. Fortunately it doesn’t matter, because the director is deaf in both ears.” Teen idol Leif Cassidy…

A pre-Cannon Films spaghetti western from Golan/Globus has all the right ingredients (Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance, Sybil Danning, and director Gianfranco Parolini); unfortunately, it’s too boring and rape-heavy for the most part. Things come alive in the last twenty minutes when it suddenly becomes a gothic slasher, complete with inexplicable daytime fog. Van Cleef plays twins who look like white Snoop Dogg.

An incredibly cornball, late-entry Spaghetti Western (shot in Israel!) with Lee Van Cleef playing two roles, one as a priest and the other as his own gambling, fast-shooting brother. This is a Golan-Globus production, later the figureheads of Cannon Films, so that might give you an idea of what you’re in for. The cheese factor is actually what makes this so entertaining because it feels like one of those Marvel Western comic books from the 50’s but with the same over the top vibe as the Italian sword and sandal movies you used to be able to watch on Saturday mornings. The dubbing is so hilarious – Van Cleef sounds like John Wayne, and Jack Palance is a cartoon villain…

ENGLISH Version below 🇩🇪 Actionreich. Unplausibel. Infantil.

Just by the hair styles alone I could have told you this was made in the 70s. Plus you have Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance in a pre Canon Golan-Globus production featuring a gun wielding preist… yeah this is the my kind of movie. Shit even though this is choppy and drags in the middle I can’t even pretend I didnt like this.

Okay spaghetti western. The plot, at times, feels a little too much like a soap opera. Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance however always give the movies they’re in a certain gravitas. 60%

First things first, what a title! God’s Gun certainly isn’t the best western I’ve ever seen, but there was plenty of entertainment to be had here. Lee Van Cleef is my favorite western lead and he gave solid performances as the twin brothers Father John and Lewis. Other than the scenes with Van Cleef, there’s a lot of generic western tropes that pad the rest of the run time and hold back the movie from being anything great. Could’ve done…

Even with its various flaws, this one’s a bit of a gem. Golan-Globus ended up letting Gianfranco “Frank Kramer” Parolini make a damn solid spaghetti western, which allowed both Van Cleef and Palance to play with the archetypes they’d done a half-dozen times or more by this point in their careers. Leif Garrett also surprised me with how endearing, passionate, and likable he is as young Johnny. It doesn’t have the flair, style, or explosive nature of Parolini’s classic “Sabata…

Okay so this movie wasnt very good and was crazy in a lot of ways, but I’m a sucker for these. Not even a true spaghetti western, rhis was filmed in Israel AND produced by none of then Golan and Globus (lmao). Lee Van Cleef plays a priest and his brother and has a hilarious wig and a mullet. Everyone is dubbed for some reason? And Jack Palance is sleeping through this. Still had a great time with this trash.

A Spaghetti western filmed in Israel and produced by the guys that founded Canon Films. Palance is great. Van Cleef is a badass x2 since he plays two different characters. Story is fun with some great semi-creepy moments at the end. Also, it hits every beat and isn’t too long. The real star of this film is Leif Garrett. He’s in what feels like every scene. My only complaint is that there is a fair amount of unnecessary sexual assault that just drags the film down. We know they’re bad guys, we don’t need more evidence to the fact.

You would think a Golan/Globus spaghetti western shot in Israel would be a mess. You would be absolutely spot on. The acting was not good, especially Jack Palance, and the dubbing was so fucking terrible.
-
A
This seems to get a bad rap – probably in large part due to some less-than-stellar acting by almost everyone who aren’t Lee Van Cleef, as well as the baffling choice to include a long scene where a group of bandits enter a saloon with the express intention of raping every woman in the film. This is then followed by said women comedically kicking and biting and struggling like it’s a cartoon. This in turn is then followed by a…

Impossible not to like this at least a little bit when you have Lee Van Cleef going toe-to-toe with Jack Palance. God’s Gun signals the end of an era. Not only is it Lee Van Cleef’s last western (to be released), it’s also one of the last Spaghetti Westerns proper. A rare EuroWestern shot in Israel (produced by Goland & Globus of Cannon fame.) The finale was fairly exciting, and I really enjoyed how Van Cleef and Leif Garrett work together…

Mediocre spaghetti western. The biggest issue is that Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance and Richard Boone are all dubbed over. It really ruins the enjoyment as they all have such distinct voices.
-
S
Lee Van Cleef looking like some kind of Terry Funk/ Rip Taylor hybrid in this movie. It does work for the character but just something so strange seeing him look like that here. Its the mid 70s and there is even a pop star in the cast and it very much feels like an oddity beyond the look of the star. The tone feels like it wants to be like the genre staples a decade prior yet there are two bumbling sidekicks that never fully cross the comedic level that you expect from later spaghetti westerns but have some very Scooby Doo esq reactions at time.

It’s not hard to make God’s Gun sound like an inviting Spaghetti Western. Take Lee Van Cleef, make him the star. Add Jack Palance, you know he’s the bad guy. Throw in Sybil Danning, because Sybil Danning, right? And then get the man behind the first Sartana film, Gianfranco Parolini, to direct it. You got the cast, you got the director. What could possibly go wrong? Start with a milquetoast script ostensibly by Parolini and John Fonseca. Add in Menahem…

Richard Boone, Sybil Danning and, snork, Leif Garrett for some reason get in on the spaghetti game when the genre was already on its arse. With foley and sound effect cues lifted directly from Leone’s Dollars trilogy (in addition to the stock library used by everyone) and Palance and Boone unfathomably dubbed by different actors (although the guy doing Palance at least tries to sound like him), God’s Gun often feels like a parody but not in a good way.…

Apart from my dvd print being vhs quality, I kinda liked this. I had heard of this movie from a top 10 worst westerns and was pleasantly surprised. The story was simple and executed well, the pacing was good and the film was only as long as it needed to be. The ending I felt was very appropriate but also created some good tension and suspense.

Cool opening shot of a children’s puppet show curtain going up to reveal Jack Palance’s gang riding into town on horseback. After that it becomes pretty unpleasant. Really nasty Palance performance. The Van Cleef dual role gimmick is kinda fun and would be more enjoyable in a different movie. Some really wild hairstyle choices. Richard Boone is clearly not doing his own dialogue, and they didn’t even try and find a suitable sound-alike. There’s a lot of gonzo crash zooms…

Lee van Cleef, Jack Palance & Director Gianfranco Parolini? Count me f’n in! The dub is ridiculous, the extras are lame, and the movie doesn’t know what it wants to be. All the bad guys look pretty hard but they’re never utilized well and while there are moments and shots throughout that hint at something spectacular and cool, it just never quite takes off. It really is a bummer because Lee Van Cleef is always hard and he’s doing a hard Double Impact scenario here which actually looks pretty good when he’s doing…

Two things I didn’t realise going into this, first it’s a Golan & Globus production and second how late it was mate. This is nearly a decade on from the spaghetti western peak and Lee Van Cleef looks younger than he did in his late 60’s movies although he is greatly helped by a hair piece. One of the most bizarre and unhindged Spaghetti Western I’ve ever seen. Produced by the duo Golam-Globus a few years before they founded Canon Films, it was shot in that godforsaken land that is the “State of Israel”. In a certain sense, this allows the viewer to enjoy a different landscape compared to the usual images of Spain (mainly Almeria and the desert of Las Tabernas), Abruzzo or the countryside outside Rome that generally characterize italian productions of the time.…

I had low expectations going in as this film has a pretty poor reputation. Maybe it caught me in the right mood, but I rather enjoyed it. The cast is good — including Lee Van Cleef as twins, one a gunslinger, one a priest, and Jack Palance on particularly nasty form — and it’s well directed by Parolini. The final act is especially well done with Van Cleef’s gunslinger character dressing up as his deceased brother to scare the bejesus out of the bad guys who killed the padre.

Surprisingly bad! Boring and then there’s like an extended rape montage it’s kind of wild. Lee Van Cleef does his best here but man is it just kind of nonsense. “Mine is the vengeance, sayeth the Lord.” As far as western cinema goes, the only thing more obvious than saying that Jack Palance makes a great villain is stating that Lee Van Cleef makes a great hero… two different great heroes, in this case. It’s got the somewhat bad acting, the awkward cinematography (like the boy looking at the camera instead of at the floor, where the body was), as well as the general cheapness, like not even trying to make Lee Van Cleef’s characters look a little different from each other But Lee Van Cleef is always a joy to watch, the bang-bang is also pretty enjoyable, and the climax is just amazing

The most batshit crazy episode of “Bonanza” ever made.

Watching Lee is spectacular but there are moments when the camera spins around making the scene look a little weird. I really liked it and it was funny when Lewis put on his brother’s cassock and started scaring Clayton’s mutts. The ending left me satisfied, Sam deserved to die and as Jenny said, he deserved to be alone and die alone. And Johnny is so cute, with his long blond hair.

Few things delight me more than unexpectedly seeing “A Golan-Globus Production” at the start of a film, because I know I’m in for some entertainingly sloppy filmmaking. That’s certainly present here, a spaghetti Western shot in Israel, where they’re clearly trying to jump on the bandwagon without knowing how or without realizing the genre is dying out. Lee Van Cleef gets to have some fun playing twin brothers, though he doesn’t get enough time with either, and Jack Palance suffers…

That a really dumb spaghetti western. But there some really good shot now and there

A local priest turns into a vigilante after a crew comes and causes a problem and death in his town but goes and gets the one who did the crime ! Soon after they come back and kill him and the young kid in town that was always with the priest is shook to a mute ! He then runs off to find the priest brother and get help ! Then they team up to take down the bad guys!…

A late (post?) spaghetti western with Lee van Cleef starring as both priest and gunfighter (in a great all denim look). Not much here to be honest.

So bad even the bad spaghetti westerns look good. Only good thing is the over the top performances of western greats Lee Van cleef and Jack palance.

J
A pretty decent spaghetti western. It has cheap written all over it. I think the entire crew couldn’t have exceeded 20 people. Some guy said to a bunch of his friends, “Alright, guys, let’s drive a few miles out there into the open and shoot a Western.” Heck, even the freaking Mexicans are all white. They didn’t even bother to get some folks who look the part. The rest of the cast seemed non-actors too. Except for the three or…

Solid western, lee even a double role together with palance, can‘t go wrong

not the best of the spaghetti westerns but jack palance seemed like he was blackout drunk on set every day and lee van cleef plays a set of twins so in my book that’s all you need really. has some absolutely amazing moments and shootouts
-
C
Warrior priest Lee Van Cleef versus Jack Palance’s gang of outlaw psychopaths SHOULD be a slam dunk of a Western, but that’s not really what we get here. Stagey and slow, Parolini – who had a pretty good run with the Sabata franchise – is asleep behind the wheel aside from a few cool shots. Van Cleef does his best and is never not a badass, but this is mostly a wasted opportunity.

J
Horrible English dub on Tubi.
-
S
Full of baffling Golan/Globus carelessness in every department, but when a movie ends with Lee Van Cleef in a priest’s garb basically staring a gang of thugs into submission to a nice morricone-y wail, it wasn’t all for nothing. And I liked the oddly touching regret and defeat Jack Palance is allowed to play at the graveyard.

Not the worst spaghetti western but definitely low in the rankings. I don’t know hot they managed to get such poor performances out of such good actors. Something is just off about this film.

This movie wasn’t good, but that stupid “BABABABABABABA” sound effect they use every 30 seconds took it to another level of awful.

The mighty team of Golan-Globus and a damn good cast that includes the goddess herself, Sybil Danning (who does briefly pop a tit), team up for one of the goofiest Westerns in recent memory.

Wild West Summer 2023 28. A Western With Either The Words Gun, Shoot/Shot, Or Bullets In Their Title Summer of Trash 2023 44. Watch a movie with a rock star/pop star. No movies with Elvis. One of those infamously bad spaghetti westerns, Richard Boone is said to have walked off the set claiming he “just walked off the worst picture ever made.” While that may be a great exaggeration, this movie is still pretty bad and only worth the watch…

Lee Van Cleef & Jack Palance in the same western yep this gets a watch. Not a bad watch some great one liners, especially liked a monologue Palance’s character has about getting old. Van Cleef plays a gun slingin priest which is also a pretty great Western trope 🤠

I wanted to like this film, but certain elements pushed me out. A band of outlaws roams the countryside and does whatever they want. Mainly robbing banks, murder, and an absurd amount of raping. After no one steps up to face the outlaws, a preacher takes up arms and brings in one of the outlaws, which eventually gets him killed. Good thing he has a twin that is not so righteous. Not terrible, but there is a group rape scene that isn’t even graphic but lasts for fucking ever. Learn how to edit.

The whole thing comes together like a really bad (old) PSA. I actually dont know how this came to be an actual film instead of an independant art project. Theres just very little thought put into the characters and their dialogue. I mean, Theres quite literally a “little johnny”. And then there’s everyones hair…

Uber low budget and acting was not very good at all. Yet Lee Van Cleef can still be a badass in the thick of the cheese. The showdown was also amazing. Definitely not the best but story was strong and kind of different for a western. I liked it.

Interesting enough story with a great gimmick of Van Cleef playing brothers. Palance was great as the hammy heavy. The Kino Lorber released a cut where Richard Boone and Palance are dubbed, which really kind of kneecaps this.

God’s Gun is really bad. Pretty much everything but the scenery works. Well… The score wasn’t bad neither. Those two elements paired with the face of Lee van Cleef are often enough for me to make it to the end. But man, the acting, writing, editing, it is all so hilariously bad. Nobody seems to be really trying. Palace has never been worse. I hope. On the other hand, most of them do seem to be having a good time.…

a clunkily thrown together and often badly edited and acted mess that comes in very late after the peak of the spaghetti western boom an awful sexual assault scene, rapid changes in tone, palance chewing the walls in the worst way possible and a hell of a lot of the film having a topless 15 year old yeah, one to avoid unless you’re an avid cannon or spaghetti western fan

What a waste of Lee Van Cleef and Sybil Danning in a lame Western! Director Gianfranco Parolini’s Italian-Israeli sort of Spaghetti Western God’s Gun (1976) is a miserable viewing experience. An unbelievably cheap production with poor television quality sets, fake red paint for blood, wretched dubbing, and sexist writing. The rape sequences are disgusting. It has insane sound choices and absurd storytelling. You’ll laugh out loud, it is so bad. God’s Gun is such a terrible movie, you’ll think it…

I don’t know what happened during the making of this Golan & Globus western, but Richard Boone walked off the movie at some point. That would explain why he’s dubbed, but why are Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance also revoiced? Was this shot MOS and everyone involved just decided they had had enough of Menahem Golan and didn’t return for the dubbing? In any event, wondering what went down behind-the-scenes is more intriguing than the film the Go-Go Boys delivered,…

Legitimately one of the worst westerns I’ve ever seen. The laundry list of issues this film has almost isn’t worth listing due to how wretched the film itself is. From it’s depiction of rape and it’s attempt at sympathy for a rapist to the bafflingly bad editing and script. Not even the pairing of Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance could save this absolute stinker. Van Cleef is fine, and Palance is mildly entertaining but doesn’t deliver a performance you could describe as good. Don’t waste your time or money on this film like I did. A great example of blind buying gone wrong.

From Gianfranco Parolini, the writer/director who brought us the original Sartana and Sabata movies, and a late-in-his-Italian-career Lee Van Cleef comes an utterly generic spaghetti western co-starring Jack Palance (who clearly doesn’t GAF), young Leif Garrett (who is really the lead), and Sybil Danning (I think her only western?), produced by Cannon Group’s Golan & Globus. Watchable, but not up to the level of If You Meet Sartana… Pray for Your Death or Return of Sabata, so only spaghetti and Cannon…

I’m not a huge Cannon fan in general, but at…

Gianfranco Parolini waves a camera all over this predictable but fun western. Jack Palance steals the show as the head of the evil Clayton family while Lee Van Cleef is charming enough as a wigged preacher with a mysterious past. Surprising at times at how good the script is but the draw is clearly Palance who manages to walk the fine line between over the top bad guy and somehow worthy of empathy.

Watched: Tubi AU This is from what they call the “ Golan-Globus Pre-Cannon” era. This is the era before Golan and Globus bought The Cannon Group, but produced films for them. It has a very old Lee Van Cleef and an even older Jack Palance. It contains: – The trope of a young kid whose called “Johnny”. Kids in Westerns always seen to be called Johnny. – A gang of bad guys called “The Clayton’s”. The bad cattle ranchers always…

Just for starters; Richard Boone has been dubbed back into English. Holy nonsense. You know I bet every English actor has been dubbed. Which makes this print ridiculous. Obviously this movie meant to be better, but it just isn’t. Even a properly dubbed print would probably be lackluster. Just less so. BD_OWN_NEED_REWATCH

For just 10 minutes of the film’s final act, excellence shown through as Priest Van Cleef went full Sabata on some fools. As for the rest of the movie…pure garbage. Weak ending, poor cinematic quality, the worst of Spaghetti Western tropes, a METRIC FUCKTON of rape, under utilization of Lee Van Cleef…the list goes on. Also I can only assume that Jack Palance and Richard Boone were contractually obligated to act as piss-poor as possible, because both of their performances were uncharacteristically awful.

A good idea not so well executed. Still an acceptable late Lee van Cleef spaghetti western with a double role. Too bad, this could have been a really great contribution to the subgenre if it had been done a little more professionally. Still pretty nice score as always with the Italowestern.

From my Movie Churches Blog posted on June 15, 2022, a combined post with the film The Deadly Companions: Some say the term “adult Western” originated in 1953 with the release of Paramount Pictures’ Shane. The studio was trying to distinguish their film from the more simplistic entries in the genre such as the Roy Rogers and Gene Autry Westerns where the good guys always beat the bad guys in a fair fight and often sang a cheery song as…
