Once upon a time, westerns used to be an American filmmaker’s playground that in most cases sported a classic theme of good vs evil where the hero was the epitome of goodness while the villain was evil personified. Then in the 1960s entered an Italian filmmaker with his unique vision of the Old Wild West and changed the entire landscape of this genre. An unofficial remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, A Fistful of Dollars is the first entry in what became Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy (also known as The Man with No Name Trilogy) and presents Clint Eastwood in his breakthrough role as a mysterious gunslinger who arrives in a troubled town torn by war between two families and schemes…

”You see, my mule doesn’t like people laughing” Sergio Leone’s extremely entertaining riff on Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, that made Clint Eastwood a star as ‘the man with no name’, is a great example of using small budget to your advantage by a filmmaker stretching himself and the genre to new extremes. Leone’s masterful framing, dynamic camera movement, shot reverse shot and editing of close-ups to show the characters’ spatial relationships bolstered by Ennio Morricone’s score is always a pleasure.

Yojimbo with dose of Dirty Harry and a side of spaghetti. Debt collecting. A noose. Saying goodbye. The 3 amigos. Talking to yourself. Spanglish dubbing. Never piss off a mule. Fuckin’ armor. The stagecoach. Cowboys and Indians. Gatling guns are the shit. Razor Ramon’s great-grandpa. Clint’s stogie. A good day to sell coffins. Cemetery shenanigans. The stranger in the bedroom. A Weekend at Bernie’s moment. Getting knocked the fuck out. The way Clint sits in a chair. Family reunion. Hard fuckin’ partying. Killing every mother fucker in the room. Sneaky-snake tactics. Fuckin’ spurs. Kaboom! The long crawl. The best place to hide. Barrels. Fuckin’ fire. The missing Americano. Bad fuckin’ news. DYNO-mite! Surprise mother fuckers! The infamous poncho. Going all…

if this is the film that Sergio Leone was able to make with a limited budget, you can just imagine what he could have made with a few dollars more

Wow, the score goes so fucking hard. Possibly in contention for one of the best ever. Take a bow, Ennio Morricone.

Now that we finished our Terrence Malick screening series, Rahul Kohli is curating a 5-picture Sergio Leone screening series for our little film group. We kicked it off the Leone-fest last night with A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS. In the coming weeks, we will be watching FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY, ONCE UPON IN THE WEST, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA. It’s such a pleasure to watch the western genre being revitalized and reframed by Leone in this film, and you feel the emergence of three legends simultaneously: Leone, Clint Eastwood, and Ennio Morricone. The story is simple, and while much has been made of the obvious – um – “influence” of Kurosawa’s…

79 “When a man’s got money in his pocket he begins to appreciate peace.” After watching The good, the bad and the ugly I read that this should be the weakest movie out of the trilogy, but we’ll see. Still it’s very simple, entertaining and really fun. Clint Eastwood is great again, and Ennio Morricone’s score is fantastic as always.

Though I think Yojimbo does this plotline a tad better, I don’t feel like making this short write-up a comparison, so I’ll just focus on A Fistful of Dollars for now. I’ve only ever seen more “recent” westerns (I guess this would be a Spaghetti Western, though) up to this point, so I was excited to start with the Dollars Trilogy. Sergio Leone really knows how to make characters look badass, scared, angry, manic, and a lot of other things.…

I had no idea what spaghetti westerns were capable of. At the beginning I was a bit put off by the dubbed audio, but now I see that the low budget for this film and the ones that follow make it much more impressive as a whole. The cinematography, score, dialogue and sound effects really stand out, and the screenplay is really well written, especially with the protagonist completely just doing the right thing because he can, but in a…

This is the greatest a man has ever looked in a movie ever. Sweet JESUS is he good looking. I’m in love. Imagine being this cool. I think Clint Eastwood is a better and more memorable movie cowboy over John Wyane lol sorry not sorry. Me and my grandma would fight over who was the superior cowboy.

much better on rewatch, Clint Eastwood is amazing at presenting this cold exterior which is not dissimilar to some of his other roles. a seemingly simple premise of two rival gangs is made into this very layered plot that shows the lead compromising himself to do good. this film is making me more and more inclined to explore this genre. great film, although it is flawed, it’s issues sort of work to it’s advantage.

NEEEEEED that damn poncho so bad
-
P
Clint Eastwood is just the best. Some of the coolest scenes in this movie are the ones where he barely even speaks. The close-ups, the tension, the way Leone can spend time showing nothing but a spur and somehow make it feel incredibly important. Every shot has style and purpose. And then there’s that soundtrack. Morricone absolutely owns this movie. Pure cool from beginning to end.
-
C
I mean come onnnn. This movie is so cool. Such classic western cinematography. Every shot in this is amazing. Clint puts on such a captivating performance. Man that damn music too. I hate to admit that I had no idea this and the others are classified as “spaghetti westerns”. Makes so much sense now. I gotta watch the other two now. I also want a poncho like that.

Yeah I mean this really is just Yojimbo. There is no hiding that shit, bro straight up just took the entire movie but made it a Western. Still very enjoyable for sure. I mean no shit, it’s Yojimbo but with Clint Eastwood, let’s get real pal. I think both films have their pros and cons over the other but I don’t think I could say I like one more than the other definitively. But it is some plagiarism let’s be real. That won’t cause me to drop my score because I’m not a cop. 4.1

“My mistake, four coffins.” My first spaghetti western and it was good. It’s not surprising that Sergio Leone made a bunch of westerns after this. The highlights for me was the score and how it was shot. I just wasn’t the interested in the characters or story.
