I like to ask myself after watching a movie “Would this movie exist if it wasn’t trying to win any awards?” The simple answer with Pieces of a Woman is no. Despite its heartbreaking themes and amazingly difficult dramatic performances that are consistently impressive and riveting, something about it feels empty. It’s as if you watched these characters go through pain without much reason. I get that this movie is a vehicle for the actors to really do their thing but if you wanna make a truly great movie you gotta have more meat to it. The story is fairly one-note and none of the characters feel multi-layered, leaving the movie to have few reasons to exist besides getting Vanessa Kirby (and maybe Ellen Burstyn) an Oscar.

Despite liking director Kornél Mundruczó’s White God, there were too many problematic things about this film. Ellen Burstyn plays the mother of Martha (Vanessa Kirby). Despite giving us top tier acting, the character: rich bitch who likes to blame everyone was repulsive and entitled. Vanessa Kirby gives a performance of a lifetime. In the right circumstances, this movie could have propelled her even further. However, co-star Shia LaBeouf’s presence is repulsive from start to finish. In real life, several of LaBeouf’s partners have claimed he is abusive. In addition, LaBeouf’s character sickeningly puts his hand on Martha’s leg and tries to force her hand on his member, before sticking his hand down her pants. In addition, we are forced to…

Directed by Kornél Mundruczó and starring Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Benny Safdie and Ellen Burstyn, Pieces of a Woman is an incredibly grounded and intensely personal storyline that follows a young mother’s home birth that ends in tragedy. This is, completely, Vanessa Kirby’s film. She’s utterly outstanding in the leading role with her performance standing out as one of the best I’ve seen in quite a while. She draws us inside Martha’s mental state to the point it feels like we’re sitting inside her mind looking out at the world through her eyes. She conveys the confusion, anger, and desolation of what her character is going through with immense force that, sitting there in the pick black, stunned me to…

If Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber’s “Pieces of a Woman” seems to rearrange the fragments of a typical melodrama into something unusually jagged and incomplete, perhaps that’s because there aren’t many films about miscarriages or stillbirths. Movies often introduce such tragedies as plot twists — cruel yet narratively convenient ways of bridging the gap between one part of a story and another — but few dare to make them the crux of the story itself. There are several reasons for that. For one thing, movies about dead babies don’t typically pull Marvel-like numbers at the box office. For another, the pain of losing a pregnancy or newborn child is unfathomable in a way that can be hard to communicate to…

i really don’t know how to put this experience into words… it’s raw, emotional and utterly devastating but manages to do that rare, special thing where it completely breaks you yet gives the time for healing and i just think that’s really kinda beautiful! also vanessa kirby the academy award is yours i will have it no other way!!!

Pieces of a Woman is probably one of the worst movies I’ve seen in quite a while. It’s a Lifetime movie wrapped with arthouse tropes, featuring good scenes that are simply too scarce too little. Considering its deeply uncomfortable subject matter, it has all the advantages to be an emotional hard hitter, only for it to end up as one of the most tedious experiences to sit through this Oscar season. Pieces of a Woman starts with its infamous one-shot birth scene, which is relatively the best sequence out of its over 2-hour runtime. We watch Vanessa Kirby as she goes through the agony of giving birth, which obviously is not something Kirby herself has gone through in real life…

Martha…

a shattering depiction of grief. vanessa kirby is on another level here, and i honestly wish we got more of her throughout! ellen burstyn being perfect as always😭💖 (also the way nobody in martha’s life cares about her at all sksksksksks i was getting so angry)

My hatred of shia still reigns strong. I think only some people can understand this film and how crippling it really is. Its long and mundane because that’s exactly how it feels to go through that.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE. She’s deserves so much better. Sayang ya untuk pasutri ni setelah kejadian itu beneran pecah broken, aku awalnya berharap they will make it together yah tapi semakin jauh aku ngerti kok mereka pisah. #MarthaSide

i cannot imagine how much prep & talent was put out in the making of this beautiful yet devastating film, stellar portrayal of loss, grief, and motherhood. they really did their big one with this.

I actually really like Shia LaBeaouf as an actor. Sure he doesn’t really have the charisma or pazazz of a leading man in a blockbuster. But in drama roles as a supporting character, he honestly nails it.

The way this story unfolds with the bridge is very interesting, and I really like the weight that Molly Parker and Vanessa Kirby bought to their characters. Very touching and I just wish Sh*a wasn’t cast in this because he completely ruined the movie from the start, since the bulk of the first 30 minutes are about the child birth and how they were almost a whole complete family. Very beautiful and Vanessa is incredible in this!

M
Un sujet encore trop peu traité à l’écran. Vanessa Kirby mérite mieux que les 4 fantastiques.
-
M
Deep, intense and emotional drama powered by Vanessa Kirby’s lead performance, which I consider to be one of the greatest performances of the decade; she gives a raw, intense and emotional portrayal of a women in pain, yet she adds vulnerability and so much depth to her. Overall is a very well executed history that approaches this very delicate subject in a good way.

Watched this movie in 2020 and it feels tough but empty cause I don’t understand about giving birth and marriage stuffs like that. I was just 17. Now I understand and yeah.. I finished the movie in 2026 hahaha. Shia looks like someone I know hahaha “time heals the grieve, every choices got their own risks.”

Holy shit, what a mastershot. A really moody film with a very clear tone and color palette, sprinkled with a bunch of fabulous performances (Vanessa, Shia, Ellen). Although sometimes the metaphors got a little too graphic and “in your face,” but still decent. Fuck this Oscar-baiting shit. I don’t even get how someone can be mad that a movie is “trying to make the actors do great.” Like, literally, what is the problem here? “Oh no, my movie is trying to win awards and make the actors deliver the best performances they could possibly do.” Like, shut the hell up.

I’ve wanted to watch this primarily for Vanessa Kirby’s Oscar nominated performance and I’m glad she was nominated because she’s exceptional here. The whole movie is pretty hard to watch, it’s a downer the whole time. The first half hour in particular is a lot to get through. On a technical level, it’s a beautiful film with stronger cinematography than I was expecting. There’s a couple long takes that are really impressive (particularly the one that’s over 20 minutes long…

the first 30 mins were insanely tensed and was a good setup for the rest of the movie. Vanessa was incredible throughout the movie honestly. the 2nd part film as a whole felt very impactful just through their words and reactions which for me feels like a important thing, as just not to rely on dramatization/sensationalization to relay her pain of losing a child. very similar to Manchester by the Sea

Why can’t anyone just give people space to grieve???????? to put everything on hold?????? to avoid it all????? even just to temporarily forget what happened, and eventually to accept it all?????? Everyone in this movie is a total asshole, even though I get how hard it must be to be in their position (especially as the husband, even though he ended up being a piece of shit who chose to cheat and became a total garbage person forever), but forcing…

Well… I knew what I was getting myself into. If movies that start with a traumatizing 20-minute birth scene are your thing, then check this one out. It was a difficult watch for me though the cast (Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, and Ellen Burstyn) give a masterclass in acting. (Aug 2026)

There’s a quiet stillness that grief makes you feel but you can’t quite put it into words and this film did a really good job capturing that. I rewatched this as I’m working on my own screenplay that has been heavily inspired by this and the brutalist!!!

Grief following devastating loss gets genuinely raw, unflinching treatment, a mother’s home birth turned tragedy fracturing her marriage and sense of self throughout the harrowing, considerable narrative depicted. Nothing about her mourning process follows conventional dramatic structure or comfortable, tidy resolution whatsoever throughout the runtime. Performances carry raw, almost unbearable intensity throughout every confrontation depicted across the considerable, extended opening sequence alone. The courtroom stretches add genuine additional complexity beyond the pure grief narrative alone throughout. This remains genuinely devastating,…
