Sheriff: Damn it, woman! You didn’t have to cut him in half, did ya? Hannie Caulder: Both halves match, don’t they? I have probably been aware of this poster for years, I mean it’s a hard one to forget with Raquel Welch front and center yet never had the opportunity to watch it. Maybe it’s a hard one to find in the UK I just don’t know. Anyway after recently watching a few westerns via YouTube this popped up in my recommendations list so how could I not press play? Although the adverts did make it almost an unbearable experience at times I won’t hold that against the film though! Hannie Caulder is a rape-revenge western yet not like most…

So very clearly written by men, but Raquel Welch‘s fiery commanding performance transcends the script’s objectifying awkwardness. (Was the dream flashback to the rape really necessary?). Thankfully that same script also has snappy hardbitten dialogue for the entire cast to relish. Hannie Caulder walks a shaky line between rape-revenge exploitation and gritty western adventure, propelled by a central mentorship that may or may not have influenced Tarantino’s Django. The action was unexpectedly robust too, with a scrappy dynamism and surprisingly bloody gunshots. The ending’s deus-ex-machina was annoying though, felt like it deliberately undermined Welch’s arc. But the characters and performances are what I’ll remember most. In those aspects, Hannie Caulder earns its place as a western gem; besides an excellent…

Like the man said, there aren’t any hard women, only soft men. -Hannie Caulder Director Burt Kennedy’s film seems to have a hard time deciding if it’s an exploitation film or a traditional Hollywood western, but by the time the third act rolled around it had won me over. It stars Rquel Welch as a sexy gunslinger, of course I was going to find something to like. What I did not know before seeing this movie though is that seeing Robert Culp in a western filled a void I didn’t know I had in my cinematic life. The gunfights are great, bloody and violent, but the film is probably at it’s best when it’s just Culp as the bounty hunter…

A British attempt at the Spaghetti Western. Hannie Caulder is effectively a rape and revenge movie. The film starts with a bunch of crooks robbing a bank before happening upon a farm inhabited by the title character and raping her. She doesn’t take this lying down; preferring instead to learn the ways of a gunslinger to get her revenge. It’s a simple story but well carried off. Raquel Welch is good in the lead. The story makes a lot of the trauma she felt during her ordeal with numerous flashbacks. The ensuing narrative sees her training with a more experienced marksman before the inevitable revenge ensues. The whole thing could just about pass for an Italian production if you squint…

Film # 18-Andy’s April Trip to Tombstone Hannie Caulder is one of those films that I only discovered a couple of years ago here on LB. Even as a huge Westerns fan, it had never come across my path, but anyone that knows me can imagine why this film caught my eye. No, not because of Raquel Welch’s obvious charms on that poster, which is a cracker I must admit, but because of those classic character actors in the supporting cast. Hannie Caulder is a rape-revenge Western, something I wouldn’t normally be interested in. The film begins with a harrowing attack on a couple at their ranch, where three brothers kill the husband and then subject his wife, Hannie, to…

These clunky spaghetti western imitations were like those cheap Star Wars knock-offs circa 1977-80 – copies of what was already a copy, to the point they have a kind of Xerox blurriness to them, style and shape losing their outlines the more they were hacked out. They have an uncanny-valley wrongness but feel rather pointless. It’s frustrating the title role is played by Raquel Welch. She couldn’t act for shit and it’s hard to not imagine a much stronger actress elevating this. It’s also somewhat frustrating the rapists are played by the usual gnarly ugly-guy scumbags familiar from any number of westerns. Why couldn’t they have been George Hamilton and John Philip Law? Indeed, why does Hannie have to be…

RIP Raquel Welch, a presence on many a teenage boy’s bedroom wall in the late 60s and well into the 70s. Before there was Farrah, there was Raquel. I wanted to showcase a movie that showed a side of the half-latina actress (born Tejada) beyond the assets that earned her a place on those bedroom walls. Hannie Caulder does highlight those assets, make no mistake. We’re talking about Hollywood, folks. But our sympathies lie squarely with the young woman of this story, not with any of the men. This movie pulls no punches in terms of the horrendous treatment she’s been subjected to. Even the ‘saviour’ she finally meets, in the form of Robert Culp, spits nails for fun. Their…

It’s not easy to tell where this movie is going. It features sex symbol Raquel Welch as a rape victim who wanders around wearing only a serape, leaving you to sympathize with her for being raped while simultaneously gazing at her as the desert wind blows that serape here and there. Plus “Hannie Caulder” leans spaghetti western, then kind of Peckinpahish, then more like an old-fashioned Hollywood western. Plus Raquel Welch is out for revenge, but being a woman, needs a man to teach her how, kind of a feminist film with masculine leanings. But in spite of the apparent overall lack of commitment to any particular style or message, “Hannie Caulder” is a kick-ass western in the Burt Kennedy vein, since he’s the director, violent and well produced, by the British apparently (maybe that explains its multiple personalities). Robert Culp is pretty cool as well.

“Win or lose, you lose. You’ll not be the same person.” A gang of low-life bandits kills Hannie Caulder’s father in cold blood and then find her inside and rapes her, so Hannie swears vengeance. Problem is, she’s an awful shot with a gun, and has to beg notorious gunslinger Tom Price to teach her to shoot. He reluctantly agrees, and together the two go after the outlaws who ruined Hannie’s life. Maybe Hannie Caulder was doomed from the start by its own premise. It wants to be a feminist western, but it consistently places Hannie’s empowerment in the hands of men. She must learn from, and must occasionally be saved by, men. And, sure, maybe this is rEaLisTiC—maybe—but realism…

In the history of the western, every once in awhile you get a Woman Done Wrong Who Must Avenge Her Rapists saga (I’ve never seen 1994’s “Bad Girls” but I’ve seen most of the rest of ’em). We meet some nefarious bandits first at a mini-“Wild Bunch” like bank shootout, led by Ernest Borgnine. The portly and initially bashful actor who won an Oscar for “Marty” seemed to have spent the rest of his career trying to rub the nice guy rubbish off himself by playing as many miscreants as possible. He laughs in the face of his rape victim in a subsequent scene. This is one of those movies where you do a pause and mental check, and say,…

Not exactly a good for her type of movie. It is a rape and revenge story and one that came at the end of the spaghetti western phase. There are times where you question if Hannie is being objectified as a sexual object and sometimes that serves as a point for the farce at the center of the movie and sometimes it just seems to be objectification for objectifications sake. I am glad though they didn’t force her to forgive her assaulters and she got the revenge she needed

Classic revenge western that wants to moonlight as a feminist film, but doesn’t get all the way there. Notable as Christopher Lee’s only western film. A shame he didn’t do more.

Hannie Caulder mixes moods. It begins as a bloody western in the Wild Bunch tradition, then becomes a dark sibling comedy as the three villains bicker endlessly, going on to appear to set up a romance, before ending in a hail of bullets (with a deus ex machina savior). The film held my interest, but I am not sure it was a “good” movie. I like Christopher Lee though, and it was odd to see him playing a gun maker in a British made western.

Burt Kennedy continues to be one of the most “bare essentials and nothing more” directors out there when it comes to making Westerns. He’ll very competently take your script and shoot everything as required, without taking a single risk or coming up with even one wholly original idea himself. Sometimes that works. Other times it doesn’t. Hannie Caulder is a film he just about gets over the line, but a younger, more daring director could’ve spun a cult classic. As…

Such a weirdly silly movie when it could have been so satisfying. For a movie about a woman whose husband was murdered and then she was gang raped and now spends her life seeking out and training up for revenge this is weirdly… G rated? Not that I’m complaining about the lack of nudity or explicit rape scenes — it’s actually a bizarre breath of fresh air how they seemed to be too scared to really show much other than…

Don’t love “rape-revenge” but at least this makes the villains look like complete idiots.

For a movie whose title is a woman’s name, this sure does assign her a male supervisor with a quickness!! Once he’s out of the picture, this picks up a TON, like the movie finally remembers that we’ve got a badass gun-toting heroine with a busy revenge schedule. Welch is so good at delivering snappy comebacks while looking deeply tortured that it’s a shame the movie waits until act three to let her start talking!!

Loved seeing Robert Culp in a role quite different from his TV work. He made a good teacher of the way of the gun and found some emotion as well in his interactions with rape victim Raquel Welch, desperate for revenge. Reminded me a bit of Peter Fonda in his westerns. Quite a cast in this little British movie. Strother Martin, in fine form as usual, plus Jack Elam and Ernest Porknine are the bad guys, and I couldn’t wait…

I could have done without Robert Culp and Christopher Lee mansplaining gunslinging to Raquel Welch, but other than that a pretty perfect 1970’s revenge Western.

Definitely can see where Tarantino ripped this off for Kill Bill and despite some strange attempts at comic relief from the villains, this is solid and proves that more movies should have had second act detours to visit Christopher Lee.

Watching this movie was the first time I really noticed our leading lady when she was that young, in 1971 to be exact. She was WAY Beautiful back then. Her co-star, Robert Culp was her leading man and he reminded me of Bruce Dern or Peter Fonda. The movie didn’t do much for me but it was the first time I saw Ernest Borgnine get whupped by a girl.

Stylish and entertaining. Really enjoyed the chemistry between Raquel Welsh and Robert Culp. This could’ve been a nice series of movies. We need more women protagonists in western genre. This film was shot by Burt Kennedy, the American filmmaker, in Almeria, Spain. This makes it pretty unique, as it could be considered a half-spaghetti western. Also, it was a main inspiration for Tarantino’s Kill Bill. But I wish it was a tad grittier. Didn’t like how they made them rapist brothers stupid and silly. Other than that, this B-western is certainly worth checking out.

I found the unwillingness to commit to neither a dramatic tone nor a comedic tone to be unfulfilling. I felt this way largely due to the trio of antagonists never matching the threat they posed in the opening. They rape our lead after killing her husband, burn down her homestead, and then devolve into a “Three Stooges” schtick until the end. Hannie’s story is a pretty by the numbers revenge, but it’s memorable due to the chemistry shared between Hannie and Price. I liked the relationship development between the two. Robert Culp’s charisma playing the character Mr Price is palpable.

Hannie Caulder flips the traditional western power structure. Hannie earns her agency instead of being protected. The catch is Hannie gets justice, but she’s not restored. It’s ahead of its time in framing a female-led revenge story without softening it.

“That bitch! Treating my family to a funeral.” Brutality played out like rapist Three Stooges. Blood is bright bright red. Years later The Quick and the Dead would also center a western around a beautiful woman. Robert Culp isn’t terrible, but I don’t buy into him being a bounty hunter, even after Christopher Lee says as much. A black clad “priest” wonders in before Raquel Welch does her killing. Ernest Borgnine’s brother gang live up to the stupidity of violent criminals.

Aqui, a…

88 Films Region B Blu-Ray Tony Tenser of Tigon joined forces with Raquel Welch and her husband Patrick Curtis, initially to make a horror film as a Tigon/Curtwel production. Instead, Tenser opted for a Western, Hannie Caulder, although Curtwel would also co-produce Michael Reeves’ The Sorcerers with Tigon in 1967. It was, by several accounts, a difficult partnership. Producer David Haft and Curtis squabbled over responsibilities, the script and the money. The money ran out at one point during the…

With Raquel Welch in the lead role we get a few slices of the cheesecake that we expect, but she’s a credible enough Western star here out for revenge after she’s gang-raped by three crooks on the run. Women who took up six-shooters and got things done in the Old West were rare in the movies and Welch takes on the part with enthusiasm while the script lets her down with some lazy short cuts that make you want to…
