“There were no dollars in them days.” All of Sergio Leone’s westerns have been about the arrival of capitalism (both to the historical American West and to then-contemporary 1960’s Italy), but Once Upon a Time in the West takes a slightly more specific perspective. Instead of looking at the (monetary) value of life, it uses the symbol of the cowboy to chart how the arrival of capital and industry parallels the decline of traditional male heroism. Industrialization causes heroic masculinity to defensively over-inflate and begin to collapse in on itself. The film takes this macho war hero whose glory days are behind him and shows how society is moving forward without him. Removed from the spotlight, this symbolic centerpiece is…

Although Sergio Leone never really made anything better or more entertaining than The Good, the Bad & the Ugly in my opinion, he did come incredibly close to repeating that cinematic feat with this spaghetti western epic. A jaw-dropping work of blazing originality that features precision craftsmanship in all aspects of filmmaking, Once Upon a Time in the West is a western that fuses breathtaking art into the legacy of the Old Wild West unlike any example before or since. The story revolves around a small chunk of land which is the region’s only water source. The family that owns the land is slaughtered by Frank & his gang, after which the ownership transfers to Jill, the widow of the murdered family.…

obviously outstanding score, gorgeous camerawork. a lot of truly cool blocking and framing that makes interesting and kinetic cinematography out of sweaty men living in a land of no showers. almost didn’t recognize Charlie Bronson, looking like a Mad Magazine McPoyle brother for the entire thing. a terrific piece of evidence towards the case that every movie should be 90 minutes.

Continuing our Sergio Leone screening series at the Flanaplex (curated and presented by Rahul Kohli), we have reached ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. I love this movie – it’s a riveting and beautifully composed epic, entangling its four central characters in various collision courses set against the vanishing frontier as a railroad – and the future it represents – pierce the American West with inevitability. Cast is wonderful. Charles Bronson turns stoic stillness into a captivating art, Jason Robards is a scoundrel with titanic charm. I personally gravitate the most toward Claudia Cardinale and Henry Fonda’s work in the film, with the former radiating grace and strength, and the latter making for one of cinema’s most fully-formed villains.…

Once upon a time in the West there was a frontier built on capitalism and individual struggle. That world has gone. The era of corporatism arrived and the world grew. Once Upon a Time in the West is about the arrival of civilisation. Henry Fonda’s terrifying villain Frank is torn between his wild ways and his desire to become a businessman. Frank is unabashedly individualistic, but he is prophesised to become a partner or leader. The changing face of capital moved from the individual to the corporation. Money is the ultimate weapon, never a gun. Compared to previous Leone movies, this is a film of negotiations more than shootouts. Its chief conflict is civilisation fighting against the frontier. Latter day…

Great use of my free will to watch the absolute pinnacle of cinema. Every facet of filmmaking combined in sublime harmony. I could go on forever about why this film is perfect but here are just some random notes after probably my 8-9th watch: -Casting Henry Fonda as the bad guy is to this day one of the most genius decisions. -Leone is a master obviously, but his use so many techniques – extreme close ups, wide angles, low and…

Henry Fonda has one of the best entrances in film history. Quite possible thanks to Ennio Morricone who composed a commanding score. One of the best I’ve heard by somebody not named John Williams, Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore. That along with the set really takes you back to the Wild West. The opening scene gives you an authentic anxiety attack from the uneasiness of the situation. Minimal dialogue and the sound design makes the maybe 10 minute scene feel…

This is the first colour picture I’ve seen Henry Fonda in and fuck me the guys eyes might have been bluer than Paul Newman’s (which I didn’t think was physically possible). This deserves its place in cinema history purely for the score and that gun barrel to steam train transition. They reminded me why I love cinema. Might prolong this run of 60’s flicks with stacked casts and insane camera work.

The best Spaghetti Western Sergio Leone ever made is a film that employs the same narrative structure as *The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*, yet possesses greater dramatic appeal, less caricature, and close-ups that delightfully rebel against John Ford’s majestic long shots.

Claudia Cardinale 😍😩🥵 Mama stole the show The whole movie was awesome. This was Leone’s blank check movie after the fistful of dollars trilogy, where he could do whatever he wanted. He did indeed spend hard on sets, cinematography, and location (in AZ and not italy!) as well as getting big names like Henry Fonda (plays the bad guy here though he usually plays the good guy, Jane Fonda’s… dad?) and Charles Bronson. Charles Bronson was second only to Claudia…

sergio leone’s franken-western (and crowning achievement) is a work of dueling mythopoeses. one is crepuscular, a story of revenge set in the dwindling age of primordial men—men who exist outside of society, outside of morality, outside of names and identities, even. harmonica and frank aren’t locked in a battle that represents good and evil; it’s some sort of retributive justice that drives harmonica to their dusty showdown. their final confrontation comes about as their universe is gradually hemmed in by…

Comes incredibly close, and in my opinion at times surpasses, the Good the Bad and the Ugly. What a masterpiece. I will never get used to how beautiful Sergio Leone can make anything look, and uses music to perfect everything he does. The tension is built so well, and all the charachters are fascinating. I love how the plot unfolded, as everything slowly falls into place, while keeping you interested throughout. Up there with the very best the genre has to offer.

A symphony of glances and close-ups; Leone treats every sweat-soaked, dust-caked face as if it were carved onto Mount Rushmore. While most classic Hollywood Westerns were about building up the myths of the West, the one-two punch in 1969 of Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch was concerned with burning those monolithic figures down.

The film was a very coming of age movie at its time. Even tough it doesn’t seem like an outstanding film at this age you still see how many directors have gotten inspired by the elements in this movie. The way the music guide you trough the movie and builts up until the end is what makes it a masterpiece for me. I didn’t necessarily love the ending but that’s a personal preference and not something that should’ve been changed to make the movie better

I think it’s great, but I just don’t think that it quite reaches the level of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It’s a much more character-driven story, but I don’t find it as compelling, mainly because of my disconnect with Charles Bronson’s acting style. Jason Robards showcases why he was one of the most revered actors of his time, and Henry Fonda does really well playing against type as a cold killer. Shoutout to Ennio Morricone for elevating everything.
-
E
Leone jobbar sina karaktäristiska close-up shots.

The soundtrack, score, cinematography and excellent acting make this movies so complete. What I love about Sergio Leone’s films is the fact that sure there’s dialogue, but when their isn’t, the screenplay doesn’t need that dialogue because the scene speaks for itself. That is why I fell in love with The Good, the bad, and the ugly (1966). That final standoff at the end is everything.

I love Romantic fiction so much!!! The west has never looked better. Such great blocking and sets holy shit. Fantastic score which is to be expected. So much tension in every scene! I love the way a businessman is contrasted against these final cowboys. Also genuinely really, really funny in places! Charles Bronson is an aura farming demon in this movie it’s so cool. Very much a retread of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly’s ideas but higher budget in a lot of ways but hey, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Really liked this. Always love a spaghetti western so I was super excited to see this. Did not disappoint. Every moment in this movie lasts so long but that’s what’s great. Each scene builds and builds. My favorite is the prolonged close up shots of each character’s facial expressions. You get to observe the tension in them as it grows. It makes me feel attached to the characters and outcome even without elaborate dialogue which is really impressive. Supa dupa cool and also I still wish I was a cowboy

I’ve saving this film for a while. I’ve loved every Leone film I’ve seen, especially The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and this is no different; it may even be my favourite. Firstly, Henry Fonda is spectacular as Frank. I don’t think there has been many better villainous performances ever. All the performances in fact are great — not exactly surprising with a Leone film. Morricone smashes it out the park with the score. No surprise. The degree to which he elevates scenes is matched by very, very few musicians; perhaps he is my favourite composer. This is just a timeless, perfect film.

Wow, what a movie. Nothing beats 60s westerns. The story’s great, there’s so many moments and bits that are great. Amazing shots. But the soundtrack was truly marvelous. (I’ve listened to it a million times before watching this.) I felt like I was floating up to the clouds. I hope they play this score in heaven. And then the contrast of the eerie harmonica is truly amazing. I want to reemphasis on the story, I can’t explain it but it’s…

Sergio Leone has gained my respect as a phenomenal movie director. Entertaining. Good western with lots to offer.

Talvez a condensação do faroeste. O progresso, a fronteira, a terra sem-lei, a dama, o salão, a vingança.

What happened in it again? There was the two guys and the woman and then the rich guy and the bad guy but the bad guy like shot one of the good guys’ families? The ambient sound was excellent

Genuinely don’t remember when I finished this I just know I started it around the 20th of May but didn’t finish it for a while so just gonna say it was finished at this time. This film is also kinda just a massive step down from literally any of the Dollars trilogy. It’s not bad at all it’s just far too long and not truly great enough

Keep your loving brother happy A must watch for any film fanatic, Once Upon a Time in the West displays true mastery of cinematography on the Western level, combined with its gripping, slowly unraveling story, cementing itself as the best revenge story ever made for the silver screen.
