I´ve rarely seen a movie switch between so many different genres during its runtime. Romance, tragedy, psychological drama, mystery thriller, and science fiction, “Abre los ojos” has it all and all the parts fit well together. The film never lost my interest. It has an original and imaginative plot and whenever I thought I figured it out, it took a sharp turn and kept me guessing again. I also enjoyed the interesting philosophical and psychological themes (reality, dreams, perception, identity, trauma, immortality), experimental structure, stylish direction, and trippy, nightmarish atmosphere. Not to mention a drop-dead gorgeous Penélope Cruz who would make me question my reality, too. If you´re in the mood for a mindfuck film with a Spanish flair, check it out.

The American remake of this movie, Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky, totally falls flat against this fascinating original from Spanish-Chilean film director Alejandro Amenábar. The screenplay was co-written by Mateo Gil, who co-wrote many of Amenábar’s films with him, and in virtually every moment it contains a diverse and unexpected incident, and the ingenious turns and twists of the storyline preserve guesswork right up to the final moments. Open Your Eyes is an extraordinarily unique psychological thriller.

Along with Almodovar’s Volver, Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes is actual proof that Penelope Cruz is a hundred times better when she’s acting in her native tongue, portraying a mix of vulnerability and sexiness that could drive anyone crazy. Incidentally, this ties directly into the plot of Open Your Eyes, a movie so audacious and confident in its every move, that it impresses even when those moves don’t quite hit the desired notes. Eduardo Noriega plays César, a man who falls for Sofía (Cruz) one night, but suddenly loses his chances with her after a car accident leaves him disfigured. Noriega is a versatile actor, even if his face is obscured by a mask or prosthetics for much of the film,…

Just one year after his horror thriller feature debut, Alejandro Amenábar gives us an entirely different flavor of thriller, one that’s harder to explain. What Vanilla Sky is a remake of, this movie eases you in with naturalistic dialogue, so when it starts getting tragic and surreal, it hits hard. Whereas Tesis makes you question who to trust, this film makes you question what to trust. This is a fantastic, cerebral experience that lacks the pacing and editing problems Alejandro’s debut has, and one I would extremely recommend watching blind.

IS the Cristopher Nolan of the spanish cinema i’m completely sure of that. Open your eyes is probably the movie that made me think the most this summer, with Interestellar’s exception. The story is very unpredictable i am shocked, the plot twist at the end…. AAAA how i Love a plot twist… Left me without words. Vanilla Sky has been on my watchlist for a…

While structurally incredible, well acted, well shot and stylistically distinct, I do think that thematically it feels a bit lacking. It touches on very interesting ideas of body dismorphia, alienation and mental suppression but ultimately doesn’t go very far with these ideas beyond using them as elements of uncertainty. Whether there is an alternative interpretation for this movie I don’t know, but as impressive as the ‘twist’ is, I think the excellent structure would have remained more satisfying had it…

This movie was right up my ally, I was confused and emotionally invested. Peak that was watched on a whim.

Probably the first time I have been moved this much by a sci-fiction film, almost emotional. There’s lot of Lynch (The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive, but specially Lost Highway, that curiosly was released that same year) and Hitchcock (Vertigo and the duality of a female character), a bit of Cronenberg too with Videodrome. I don’t know about the Vanilla Sky remake but I don’t think Tom Cruise could be as a good as Eduardo Noriega in this.

I wasn’t really paying attention to the first half, but from what I saw I liked it, even if it’s something that didn’t knock my socks off. I’d watch it again properly.

The storytelling much more organized than Vanilla Sky but Vanilla Sky had a stronger psychological horror quality for me. The ending makes much sense than Vanilla Sky. What if the dream turns into a nightmare? Can’t you tell dream from reality? You invented your own hell.
-
T
I initially sought this out solely to see Eduardo Noriega in action, but I walked away completely captivated by the film’s brilliant, labyrinthine structure. Noriega delivers a phenomenal performance, effortlessly transitioning from an arrogant, charismatic socialite into a deeply tragic figure hidden behind a prosthetic mask. As the original blueprint that “Vanilla Sky” would later replicate as a remake, this version masterfully blurs the lines between reality, memory, and nightmare, proving that the raw, foundational source material holds an undeniable…

Enough time had passed since watching Vanilla Sky to really appreciate this version. Tho this was made into nearly a shot for shot remake, the most noticable difference between the two was in the music. Amenábar’s original version didn’t turn the twists and turns of the story into extended music videos, which frankly ruined Vanilla Sky. Penelope Cruz was also much better in this version

Alejandro Amenábar dreamed he made a masterpiece the kind people write essays about, obsess over every twist of. Then he woke up and made this instead. Two hours of “is it real or is it a dream” and the only genuine mystery is why anyone thinks that’s profound.
2 -
Z
Main guy is pretty hard to sympathize with at all, and the mystery is kind of interesting for a bit, but not super satisfying in the end. Cannot overstate how “it was all a dream” makes any mystery or intrigue go limp immediately. But maybe that was less of a cliche when this came out. After The Invite I’m just watching Penelope Cruz movies. She’s great; the rest not as much.
