Was really hoping for an American Hotfuzz meets Fargo, a kind-of slow burn to action pack finale. What I got instead is a speed run. No breathing room, no reason to care. It cannot decide if it wants grounded action or cartoon violence. I watched and I felt nothing, no joy at the spectacle, no laughs at the jokes. While it’s not necessarily fair to compare this to Nobody, that film is at least fun, I understand the character. Here I don’t even understand what compelled someone to write this.

A much better for-hire job for Wheatley than his last one, and thankfully (despite Kolstad’s involvement) not just another John Wick clone. As far as Bob Odenkirk’s collaborations with this writer go I think this might be the best one because Odenkirk makes for a very good friendly, well-meaning Fargo-ass substitute Minnesota sheriff but also learned enough of the action chops from working on those Nobody movies that he’s not completely out of place when this makes its big swing from Hot Fuzz territory to a genuinely explosively gory siege setpiece that takes up the back half of the film. Love the snowy smalltown locale all this violent military assault mayhem is taking place in (leading to some great collateral…

This thing is just having so much fun doing as much as it possibly can to get a gasp and a giggle out of the audience. Every kill is great and shockingly unafraid to erase anyone at any given time. Low key kinda wish its prologue hadn’t inadvertently ruined the entire twist, but oh well. The back half is just pure glee. Wish my career was like Bob Odenkirk’s.

Got to attend the LA premiere and this movie fits my criteria for American Anime classification. It’s a lot of fun, it has great kills and fight choreo, and I loved watching Jess McLeod shoot a gun.

Look… turn off your brain… know that all reality must be suspended… you’re going to get a ton of attempted shock value… a bunch of people are going to meet their makers. Plus, the Fonze comes and steals the movie for about 7 minutes. This movie isn’t for me, but if you’re into mindless shoot’em ups… this might be your jam,

👍🏻58% 🔙eXistenZ🔙 🔜The Dead Zone🔜 A fun, but slightly dumb popcorn flick. Bob Odenkirk could play the reluctant action dad forever and I’d never get tired of it. It definitely gave off Hot Fuzz vibes; isolated outsider cop uncovers a town hiding a massive secret, just way more ham fisted. The heavy handed exposition and weak writing keep it from reaching Hot Fuzz levels of fun, but it’s still a decent ride. Bob Odenkirk is a national treasure at this point and doesn’t really do no wrong. He’s a pretty solid actor, think I’d gravitate towards him more if I tuned into some of the iconic TV shows he was apart of, yes I’ve not seen Better Call Saul or…

It could have used a few more minutes to better develop some characters and make the transition to action a little less abrupt, but even this shortcoming helps strengthen the film’s best part: this pleasant and consistent blend of well-crafted action, some serious themes and a healthy underlying clumsiness that makes it all fun and entertaining. If Bob Odenkirk’s career is to become the heir to the most douchey Jason Statham, but with the added bonus of using more than one expression per film, I personally approve.

Eh, it’s fun I suppose. 6.4/10 – it’s not terrible, just hard to believe. It falls in the genre of “realistic yet farfetched” and was made by the people that made John Wick if I’m not mistaken. Odenkirk was good, kinda been establishing himself in roles similar to this. Normal felt like off brand “Nobody” tbh. “People are liking your softer touch. How would you like to be our replacement sheriff?”

I’m all for the small town setting where an outsider comes in and has to sort things out. With Normal, I particularly enjoyed the snowy and claustrophobic feel to it. I also like Odenkirk’s action hero run. He’s charismatic in the role and brings a touch of realism to his characters. Normal is very predictable in the end. The story is formulaic and doesn’t leave much to the imagination. What I really didn’t like were the side characters, who came…

The first act really drags but once it gets into the action, Normal is really fun. Lots of creative and gory kills which I enjoyed, and everyone is clearly having a lot of fun, especially Odenkirk. The dialogue is so cookie cutter it hurts but there’s enough heart from our lead that I didn’t mind the bad writing as much. Is it just Hot Fuzz Lite? Yes, but I still enjoyed it.

73 – Mindless fun is the best way I could describe this movie. This is a perfect, shut your brain off and just enjoy people killing each other for an hour (in some brutal ways too). Some of the smaller parts of the movie didn’t work or make sense to me (like why is Bob Odenkirk’s voiceover narrating the movie like it’s an early 2000’s romcom) but who cares. Wasn’t expecting this to be high art, just looking for a good time and this delivered.

-A fairly basic Odenkirk vehicle elevated by Ben Wheatley’s hyper dynamic eye for atmosphere and kinetic violence. Without him, I really think this would fall equally as flat as Nobody 2…which ultimately told us: we need a damn good director to make these little Odenkirk excursions truly sing the way they deserve to. -I wonder about the audience in this case. Who is their Odenkirk? Was it Better Call Saul? Was it his directorial work like Let’s Go To Prison…

Alternate title: Cold Fuzz The drab color palette and ironic juxtaposition (or maybe just straight line) between aw-shucks Americana and deranged violence (already not the cleverest gag) get stale early, but this one still had enough fun action beats and cackle-inducing kills to keep me seated. Also, badass queer representation! I don’t think you can have a protagonist backstory that literally and figuratively dark and still climax with a Final Destination death, though.

I like how Bob Odenkirk carved out this little niche for himself and this one didn’t use the action stereotype of retired badass gets pulled back into the action trope. Actually had him struggling with morality a bit but a lot of over the top and gratuitous violence that kept it fun.

Fun and zany and brutal and outrageous. It’s exactly the kind of over-the-top action comedy Odenkirk and crew do well. The acting isn’t terrible or award winning but it’s not a distraction. This movie tries to mirror a large number of more successful, more interesting movies but fails to find the right tone or the right plotline to stick with. The result is entertaining enough but pretty muddled overall. The standout here is Bob Odenkirk, but, for the most part, he’s the only actor who’s given a real character in this movie. Everyone else is mostly playing some version of a cartoon character mixed with an expendable action goon. Especially ponderous is…

Imaginative action sequences and a tightly knit narrative make this a sharp and entertaining watch. A solid blend of action, tension and character that keeps things moving.

Pretty stellar cast for such a middle of the road action flick, whole time I thought deputy Mike was Will Forte. Entertaining nonetheless, I had fun.

I will watch anything with Bob Odenkirk. This felt like more of what he has been doing, but damn if he isn’t so likable and charming. Fun action, and intertwining a plot with the Yakuza and Minnesota surely has never, and may never again happen in a movie. 7/10

Bob Odenkirk really just made the same movie twice.

Why was the gun loaded on the wall?! Fun juxtaposition action flick with the always entertaining Bob Odenkirk. The second half had a lot of fun (and a few surprising) kills but not sure the story all worked that well.

It has its moments but overall it felt like it could have used a bit more time in the oven

Felt like the film makers could have leaned into the absurdity of the story and characters more. The movie was fun, but the potential was there for more.

Batshit crazy action with Odenkirk’s wry wit shine in Wheatley’s satire of small-town politics. Outrageous popcorn fun with a lot more class than the premise deserves.

Good visuals, good music and a decent story that ends up being hilarious but a bit dark.

Love how sloppy the fights are and that Bob Odenkirk is still throwing hands. Also love the spirit of Final Destination this has.
