I’ve seen a lot of movies jack themselves off, some of which I actually quite loved, but this one went full autofellatio. This review isn’t even about the allegations against Woody, I actually went in expecting to love this. I would just genuinely love to hear others thoughts on why it’s considered a masterpiece because I feel like I’m…missing something.

A movie so good that even 40 years and one pedophilia allegation later, its director was still able to persuade Timothée Chalamet to cast his lot with him in the quixotic hope of recapturing even a fraction of its magic. With all the time-jumping and fourth-wall-breaking and nifty use of cinematic techniques (split-screen, animation, subtitles), there’s a sense of excitement with the possibilities of the medium here that hasn’t been present in Allen’s work for a long time. His cinematic worlds have become so vacuum-sealed that it’s surprising to be reminded of how this movie actually feels set in the actual New York and plugged into the actual social/intellectual life of the city circa 1977. It doesn’t feel like Jason…

Yes, one might argue that this film is fundamentally based on misogynistic premises and that it’s so obviously in love with itself to make some sick to their stomach. I get it. But even being painfully aware of that, I just can’t deny the things that this film does best. Starting from the brilliant editing, the unconventional storytelling, the photography, but most of all the genius comedic writing. That sincopated self-deprecating banter and idiosyncratic neurosis that you either loathe or adore have their finest hour (and a half) in this. And god, the way Diane just shines. I just can’t not love it. In my eyes this will always be the best rom-com ever conceived.

An updated take on a French new wave movie in the vein of Jim and Jules, but through the eyes of a New York Jew. Bittersweet but optimistic in its view of love and the human experience. Feel privileged to watch it again, this time with someone I love.

diane is literally too perfect. her smile and outfits ( I wish I could rock a vest and a tie the way she dose. I’m obsessed with her in that outfit) and her whole performance is amazing, it’s just the way she carries herself she’s so radiant and warm I love her so much :(. Also I hate that horrible people make good movies because this was really good and I really liked it, the fourth wall break was done…

Bem executado a desconstrução.

I hate to do it because Woody Allen is such a repellent degenerate scumbag but this is just a perfect movie. Formally inventive at every turn and piercingly poignant in its depiction of adult relationships. It’s zooming-in of the mundane gives it a universality that has been attempted often and never bettered. Truly the wellspring of all New York movies and neurotic rom coms. Diane Keaton is ALIVE, she feels completely real and makes me tear up every time she…

“E io pensai a quella vecchia barzelletta, sapete…

did not get enough neurotic, masturbatory woody allen in the last one (or diane keaton or shelly duvall or paul simon for that matter) three lines from this movie (the two jokes in the beginning and the one at the end) constantly echo in my head, and the last one especially has become pretty important to me.

i would have loved this film more if woody Allen wasn’t in it Alvy is basically Woody Allen himself — neurotic, talkative, pretentious, obsessive, always overanalyzing everything. Having Allen play him only makes it harder to see a character rather than Woody Allen himself in a relationship.

I seem to remember liking this a lot more the first time I saw it. Now, it’s just not really for me. The stars are all for Diane Keaton; Woody had a few funny moments, but his voice and personality just grated on me after the first 20 minutes or so.

Amé a…

I liked the nonlinear storytelling and dialogue. The couple felt very lived in and real. Had a couple of real laughs. Still considering what I thought about it thematically. Slice of life; the self-loathing man looking for love in spite of his fears / his self; he seemed to lack real vulnerability interestingly enough, despite a high level of self awareness.

The idea that supporting art means you must support the person in whole is ridiculous to me, this movie obviously shows glimpses of Woody’s horrible assholisms that led him to be a pedophilic creep. But I love this movie, in all of it’s depressive narcisistic fury and it’s neurotic flurry. I can see myself in these fragments and it’s difficult to not make him a formal idol, because the way the story is put together is exactly my kind of…

It’s pretty brave for Woody Allen to direct and act as the main character in the movie. Since you have to dissect yourself to show everyone what’s truly inside you. You have to show them your arrogance, your paranoid, your jealousy, your weak, and your selfish, your pathetic and your critical. But I really like the ending which very similar to lalaland, when all the old memories rewind in your mind like a tape, the true love finally pop out instead of fading

I unfortunately do not possess the patience required to write a review worthy of this film. It is indeed a masterpiece. I would just like to point out that many people miss that Woody Allen is and has always been in fact fully aware he is an absolute moron. He knows he is obnoxious, pretentious, and shallow. The edit in the scene where Woody’s character is criticizing Annie’s interest in her college professor could not make that more obvious. Woody’s whole bit about adult education shows he knows damn well he is a total bore.

Feels like I’m experiencing the “Seinfeld isn’t funny” phenomenon with this one. I can see how it was groundbreaking for the time, and there are some genuinely interesting filmmaking techniques here. Loved the subtitles showing their thoughts while talking on the balcony and Annie “leaving her body” were some great touches. The whole “New York vs. Los Angeles” theme was strong, as well. I just couldn’t get into the characters or their dilemmas. I never really bought them as compatible…

not sure where to place this ratings-wise. it’s witty and funny (not LOL funny but makes-you-think kind of funny, pause-thats-actually-deep kind of funny.) first thirty minutes was a pain to sit through though ngl. it’s not my style of romcom – not bc the ending – but mainly maybe alvy as a character makes it hard to sit through sometimes LMFAO. Rewatching this with a fully developed brain is quite an experience. You get to see both how utterly insufferable Alvy is and how well this film is made. The way memories step into eachother, the fact that this larger than life Annie is just a product of a subject and unreliable narrator. Incredibly stuff. Anyway. F*ck Woody Allen. All I can say is no peny has been spent in this rewatch.

Brilliant But what was amazing in re watching is how iconic it is. It is like Rocky horror picture show for our generation. Also shockingly surprising is how original and innovative it is from a cinematic perspective. Like a cinematic equivalent of a stand-up comedy routine with a long digression into a story of memory, Keaton singing seems like old times. kaleidoscope of his memories of a relationship that was important to him kindles the audience’s memories of youth and relationships
-

My thoughts on Annie Hall are a little difficult to put into words- on one hand, the direction, framing, the style and the experimentation that this film is ripe with creativity and that definately deserve a lot of praise, the subtitle gag is amazing, theres an animated sequence because why not, the fourth wall breaks that don’t mess with the flow of the film and the editing are all very inspiring. And then there’s Woody Allen, (separating the art from…

I fucking love this movie, although I see the same problem with all of Woody’s movies I’ve seen. There are also some obvious narcissistic things, but honestly, I notice those things in myself and my friends too so I don’t think we should judge him specifically for this. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie.

“Sex with you is really a Kafkaesque experience” Ngl tried really hard to separate the art from the artist with this. Cute watch overall there’s a lot of things done well but there are so many other little things this movie does that made me think yeah this guy is definitely guilty of everything they accused him of
-
D
My first Woody Allen film. Not sure about the allegations but I will separate the art from the artist. I heard he makes romcoms for anxious men and this movie is just that. Diane Keaton was incredible with her quirky dialogue. I couldn’t help but wanting them to be together at the end but her character absolutely deserved better than him. I didn’t really know what I thought of this movie until the montage at the end of their relationship…
-
A
Pretty good and great stuff from diane but felt like there were times when it lacked substance. That may have been on purpose and it was to show the relationship between alvy and annie was mostly just that in name except for the very beginning. Not sure if woody allen made expecting sympathy for his character but dont think many people would give alvy much sympathy. Annie saying she should just live with women is accurate
-
T
This film was more than what I had expected, and it goes above and beyond as a film worth watching. P.S. Woody Allen is a disgusting man, so I always have a hard time separating his art from him, as he’s a dispicable human being.

Favourite line in the film has to be “I’m standing here with the cast of The Godfather” when Allen has been waiting for Keaton anf bumped into some mobster-style characters. I didn’t remember it and almost jumped from the couch when it happened, then proceeding to babble about Keaton and Godfather to my somewhat disinterested and only mildly amused (due to my excitement) wife. A wonderful look into relationships, and somehow a precursor to “The Breakup”; although this film and…

People mistake this movie for the beginning of the modern rom com when in reality it’s an introduction to dudes becoming insufferable and pretentious (non-pejorative) The older you get the more you realize there’s nothing remotely romantic or even admirable about the couplings of Alvie singer. The inevitable downfall of the singer/hall floating loveraft is a fun and at moments relatable tale. Sneeze in the coke container, be meta and break the 4th wall, play tennis and fall in love, argue about whose books are whom’s after the breakup; you only live once. Annie Hall is a perfect movie and it’s absolutely fuck Paul Simon!

Unfortunately I found this extremely funny and clever. Allen, who is a monster, has a very specific charisma in his acting and voice to his writing that go together like peanut butter and chocolate. What can be said about Keaton in arguably her defining role – she’s pretty good yeah. Really just love the editing and structure here. The way it jumps around time and breaks the fourth wall so casually, it’s so damn funny.

I loved the part where Alvy had absolutely no character arc and Annie was able to start therapy, become emotionally secure, move to Los Angeles, explore her academic interests, make friends, and pursue her dreams

I don’t think this is at all my favorite Woody Allen but I think that artistically this is him at his most pure. It has the most of his idiosyncrasies and I think the best element is that it truly shows his psyche. “I had no latency period” the opening scene is possibly one of the most revealing things. Especially watching it now… but I feel like people fail to see that he’s making fun of himself in this incredibly…

two people who clearly love each other but somehow make each other miserable. relatable. unfortunately. just two emotionally complicated idiots overthinking everything while i sit here like “yeah… this is why i don’t date” 😭 funny, awkward, neurotic, and way too real about relationships.

Christopher Walken and Jeff Goldblum were so young her, while Woody Allen just looks the same! Allen is a real chick magnet here. I’ve never been much of a Woody Allen fan, but this is one of my favorites.

The best thing about Annie Hall for me was Diane Keaton. She gives a very memorable performance, and her natural and charming personality really brings life to the character. I also liked how the movie breaks traditional storytelling rules, especially for its time, with characters directly talking to the audience. The dialogues are smart, and the movie has a realistic look at relationships, instead of trying to make love and relationships look perfect. One negative for me was Woody Allen’s…

Delightful. Life affirming. Give me another 90, just keep yapping, you two

The direct address to the audience, detours into the past, the visualization of inner monologues, and the simultaneous therapy sessions are all clever directorial ideas that expand the fun of the film’s meta perspective. And in the end, it’s pure Woody Allen: a film that simply leaves you thinking that love is a hassle after all, but maybe not such a bad thing.
