“Again you get the feeling that you’re in the wrong place.” An emotionally detached experience, far from what Joachim was able to achieve within his first two features. Maybe grief or fear can be louder than bombs but my heart was silenced throughout. A work of someone moving away from their native language and crafting something in English, clearly nowhere near as beautiful or as nihilistic. A multi-layered fractured tale about the death of a mother and wife, what it brings onto a broken family of 3 men. Just didn’t do much for me, has moments sprinkled here and there that call for my attention but the characters are kinda unlikable. Explores suicide and the human side of things, as per usual with any Trier film. Forgettable, not dramatic enough, slightly interesting and just lacks what made his earlier works so great. Performances are underperforming too, besides one or two. A decent enough film, undoubtedly, Trier’s worst. JOACHIM TRIER RANKED

An American Joachim Trier movie feels a lot like a pretty good impression of Joachim Trier, which ain’t a bad thing! Even in a lesser film, Joachim still achieves many sequences of precise cutting as well as moments of beautiful silence. Joachim Trier movies all have a base level of beautiful, naturalistic filmmaking and then every 20 minutes or so they swing for the fences and do something otherworldly. Thats no different here, just less consistent. However, the pee scene is genuinely incredible.

How can this be? A director of two fabulous films follows up with this – a messy, poorly characterised, cliché drama. The premise is fine enough but what completely derails everything are the characters of Jonah and Conrad. Especially Conrad, who’s clearly supposed to be this sympathetic high schooler, struggling with the death of his mum and outpouring his angst into notebooks, all while shutting himself away to play online video games all night. The problem is, he’s not sympathetic at all. He’s an asshole. Can this be excused because of the situation, and/or “because he’s young”? Maybe for some but not me. I love characters with no redeeming qualities on screen, but only when they’re written specifically to be…

There are days I’m invisible, I can do whatever I want. I must be careful not to lose that ability. Louder than bombs. Perfect title for this film. The quieter we become, the louder we become inside. And losses and truths make as much noise in our hearts as bombs. Joachim Trier’s films are like life. Calm, real. They touch something inside us. In his films, we are watching people we don’t know but familiar feelings. Language, time, place, people, events are maybe different but a familiar, sincere feeling. Joachim Trier makes films for “people”, for things we all have in common. I love his quiet, calm, loud style. This film is about death, family, loss and truth. Two boys…

Just a couple of random notes: — Isabelle Huppert (with that pure face of hers) and Gabriel Byrne (with that aura of a warm blanket) are great together. Love those guys. Not quite as much as Amy Ryan though. — Dysfunctional families always have it easy with me, and I’m also a sucker for stories about brothers. — Could relate to the themes of grief and disconnect. — More melodramatic than I expected. Thumbs up for that. — Trier’s obsession with suicide, and inevitably his romanticizing of it, is starting to get a little old. — Never thought I’d be moved by a scene involving a computer game. — Adding bits and pieces of Huppert’s character’s experiences as a journalistic…

Contrived in the sense that I know that Isabelle Huppert would never have kids that boring/vapid and with hair THAT bad.

“One morning you’re over there doing something you feel is important, but it’s hard as well, you know? You can’t wait to go back home. Then finally you’re there. You always arrive exhausted, having changed plans like four times.” Nerd and asshole Jesse Eisenberg cinematic universe. Joachim Trier’s Oslo trilogy is one of my favorites. I love his style and the way he portrays different people in the modern world. Even though I was looking for Anders Danielsen Lie, watching Jesse Eisenberg was also very satisfying. The film focuses on the lives of Isabelle, a war photographer, and her husband and two sons after her death. Trier usually tells the story of lives changing after an event in his films,…

I could die tomorrow. I could get hit by a car, have a brain aneurysm, drown or kill myself. I might not be alive by tomorrow. I am haunted by my own mortality. I am terrified of death yet some days see it as the only way to escape. I could die and you’d all move on. Maybe you would be sad for a little while but I am just some guy you met online a few months ago (or a few weeks ago). If I die, I will be forgotten. No one will remember me because I am not very memorable. What will I leave behind? What did I do while I was here? If I was never born,…

this isn’t really a review. there is a scene in this movie that lasts maybe three seconds: someone looks at a photograph, one that the photographer may have risked her life to make and then turns the page. that’s it. nothing happens. and somehow that was the part of the film that stayed with me. i started thinking about the strange distance between making an image and looking at one. someone can spend their entire life learning how to see…

Joachim has such a gift for cutting straight to the heart of his character’s point of view. I could feel that trying to break through here, but couldn’t help feeling like it was just almost there, not quite at the surface like it was in Oslo, Worst Person, or Sentimental. Isabelle Huppert somehow perfectly suited for the role as emotionally distant war photographer while also being kind of unbelievable as a person married to Gabriel Byrne’s character. She remains unquestionable…

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to. ~ Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler

I love the how the three men mourn and remember her differently. They all have different memories of her and how they think of her. And with that how they grow as a person after her death are all different. Character arch of all three characters are amazing. Script is great like always.

Trier does such a fantastic job at drawing out the best performances of his actors. He also is amazing at letting moments sit and simply exist, which is really hard to do.

“I saw her, you know. I saw who she was. I was here.” Hmmm estoy llegando al punto de preguntarme si este…

I always wonder why foreign auteurs are compelled to make american movies which never work! only watched this because i am slowly going through isabelle huppert’s filmography. did not finish it, I love joachim trier but for some reason this film ends up mixing norwegian dryness with being drab and american. jesse eisenberg does what he does absolutely best– plays an awkward, emotionally stunted wanker! Everyone else is weird, the house is beautiful, the war-photographer background is odd
