Ever had a lump stuck in your throat for 2 hours? Ever held in a scream you wanted to scream but couldn’t because you were afraid you couldn’t stop? Ever seen an actor not acting, not performing, just being? Ever seen a director do his utmost to tear out your soul, stomp on it only to rebuild it in the most bitter sweet way imaginable? Ever lost someone, wanting them back so badly, living becomes a chore? Ever grieved? Ever felt so much love and responsibility it becomes unbearable? Manchester by the Sea shows us a life, a real life, in all its ugly beauty. It uses the power only the most exemplary pieces of art possess, the power to…

it’s to no suprise this film was shot incredibly and there is some beautiful scenes with some gorgeous cinematography this was very well acted and the dialogue was great there was moments that were emotionally and thought provoking into the shoes of the protagonist who i believe to be was the antagonist to his own life sadly and a great depiction of grief and loss as-well as some unironically funny moments. I sadly however did not connect with this film…

A deep movie and one a little hard to grasp. Its this personal story but told in a beautiful yet depressing way, the cinematography perfectly captures these still of life, the movie brooding un its deep melancholy. An aura of inescapability shrouds the movie, your begging for something or someone to yield but its always firm in its brass. The words escape me as the movie is so pesonal it feels wrong to say anything too harsh, it truly builds…

-
A
A realistic depiction of grief from storyline with no major character developement to the convincing performance given by the main characters. A film where you want to cry but the that stage of grief is already over. A movie about how life’s a bitch because the world will not “lower its voice” just to let you grieve. It will keep spinning like nothing changed. The sound design in the film was intentionally chaotic to interrupt your grieving. Damn sad movie…

Really good but frustrating movie, its premise if executed better could’ve given us an absolute classic, my criticism with this is the same id give to aftersun, its insistence on subtlety and challenging the audience to understand the characters through it robs us of some potential great moments, there is beauty in the subtlety but its just overused here to the point the film never actually picks up the pace,no real development happens of the course of the movie, maybe some, but…

Watched this late at night and it stayed with me. It is quiet, heavy, and painfully real. Nothing feels forced or exaggerated. Nobody suddenly finds the right words, nobody magically gets better, and the movie never tries to make grief look beautiful. Lee is what hit me the hardest. He is not just sad. He is carrying something that he genuinely does not know how to live with. And the movie does not give him some perfect redemption arc, because…

This was a rewatch straight from hell I watched this at 13 when I had like no critical thinking skills and just found it boring and oh my goodness this is amazing. While it is actually a bit slow (which I understand is the point) everything else is nailed down, almost perfect. But lee is just such an upsetting character and one with no closure. There’s no growth, he doesn’t get better and when he tries to explain himself he stutters and slips over his words. He isn’t selfish, he understands that dying will cause so many others to suffer but “he just can’t beat it”

I think this is a beautiful movie that explores how flawed it is to be human and the great range of complex emotions that come with it. It’s definitely a slow burn which works perfectly for this movie and everything and everyone’s performance feels real and relatable in different ways. Definitely a movie everyone should watch Also damn I see how it is to talk to me 99.9% of the time after watching this and seeing how Lee doesn’t talk, but I mean he’s still better at expressing his emotions than I am when he’s not just punching someone

Raw and real story, some great down to earth acting The flashback scene was beautifully produced The pacing made it feel very long but not in a bad way, instead quite intimate and homely, and at the end I felt like I spent so long with the characters that I didn’t want it to end Bluray looked crisp 👌 thanks @rachel

I can’t beat it. I can’t beat it. I’m sorry. The way Casey Affleck plays Lee like he’s physically carrying a weight around his neck. The way his voice changes and he hides inside himself. Not the ending I wanted, which makes the movie all the better. There is no big cathartic release. If there is, it’s in one of the quietest moments of the film. It’s in seasons and the snow falling, and time slowly dulling every wound.

There is a lot of great in here (Affleck, Williams, and that kids accent) but the overall film felt maybe a little underwhelming. I just don’t feel the gut-punch I was promised. I can’t help compare grief portrayal here to Blue, which just feels more poignant That being said… “I can’t beat it” … man Side note: I do think it is special when you can just tell an actor/actress knows that that particular film will be their most important performance.

A film about stuggling to deal with grief. The acting was amazing and I could see Lee’s mindset through the music and images. The director did a great job making New Hampshire look like the most depressing, hellish place on earth. Was expecting a cathartic or harrowing climax after the depressing personal and family tragedies but it never happened.
3 -
E
Beautiful shots. It feels like u are just dropped into their lives. The conversations feel natural and seem like how they would actually be as in it doesn’t give more than what it needs to away. It’s not spelling everything out. The ending will leave me thinking tho was expecting something else…

-
D
Manchester by the Sea is devastating not in the Requiem for a Dream sense, where the movie overwhelms you with tragedy but it hurts because it understands something much quieter: sometimes people experience something so terrible that they simply cannot return to who they were before and the movie doesn’t insist that they do. That’s what I love about it. I think it’s is a masterpiece. It’s one of the most honest films I’ve seen about grief because it doesn’t promise that…

It’s the most accurate depiction of depression in a man that I’ve ever seen in a movie. Nothing dramatized, just quiet and all consuming depression. The people that are just meeting him think he’s an asshole but the people that know him can see how the depression and guilt has consumed who he was. I’m not a fan of the ending with the depression seemingly winning and Joe’s dying wish, which he had unquestionably thought would help his brother, being thrown to the side.
