I just watched the extended cut for the first time. This is a completely different movie. It’s like finding out my parents aren’t who they said they were.

jason lee could do the drive elevator scene but ryan gosling could never do the mallrats elevator scene

The climax of this never-ending nothing of a romcom(?)—which has the all the dramatic rhythm and visual flourish of the worst sitcom you’ve ever seen—having something to do with Ben Affleck fucking a teenager and then being raped in prison during the fantasy happy ending montage broke me. Not sure I’m going to be able to complete this auteurist project.

55 Conceptually, this is a bit thin compared to Clerks, especially with the mirrored struggle of the two protagonists, but damn, 90s Jason Lee was unstoppable. He’s a perfect fit for Kevin Smith’s tortured adolescence and geeky irony. The rest of the cast is great too. As an encapsulation of mall culture and stunted maturity, Mallrats does the job just fine. “Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don’t hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent – I don’t care which one – but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.”

It’s true. All of it. People used to go to the mall. And not even to shop. You just went. Walked around. Had a cookie. Maybe sabotaged a live TV dating show. The 90s were fucking weird.

It’s a very fun 90s movie with nice humour. It’s more like a one time watch

Were it not for Jason Lee this movie would be nothing. I enjoyed this a lot more than Clerks but Kevin Smith’s insistence on keeping a thesaurus by the typewriter at all times really rubs me the wrong way. I mean it just makes the dialogue real so unnatural giving the actors almost nothing to work with to not sound stiff. At least he didn’t seem as far up his own ass this time.

Easter bunny’s not real! It’s just some guy in a suit!

Maybe I’m of an age that is specifically tuned to this humour, or maybe, just maybe, Mallrats is brilliant even after 30+ years. There are a ton of little jokes and references (including Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid of all things) alongside a lot of general goofiness, and everybody is fantastic in their roles
-
D
extremely misogynistic and white middle class, i have a hard time absolutely hating it though. jason lee is such a great likable actor and everyone played their part well.

I really really really liked thiss!!! 😀 I really liked the comedy, the characters, the writing, the set design and I also really liked getting to see more of Jay and Silent Bob!!!! 😀 Additionally it was also really cool seeing Stan Lee!!! :> Dayum Jason Lee though…

Obviously, it’s a massive downgrade from the groundbreaking boundary pushing social critique of clerks but even though it may not be particularly well short or the story may not exactly be the highest brow piece of entertainment. I really love Mallrats I grew up in the middle of nowhere countryside and my only escape from the isolation of being disabled was through comic books for the majority of their childhood. I find the film really encapsulating that sense of nothing…

S
Best Stan Lee cameo. You can’t convince me otherwise. And the Weezer song at the end??? Absolutely perfect !!!
-
B
TS and René !!!!! Brodie and Brandi !!! why is everyone hot omg. like actually i’ve never seen Jason Lee this hot in a movie before and been like yes pls, but this one omg, he ate. and he’s lowk shit but just the right amount of cynic that gets me. like Pacey in Dawson’s Creek. and I love everything that Shannon Doherty (rip queen) touches. also i think it’s hilarious that i was introduced to Jay and Silent Bob in Degrassi goes to Hollywood! and this is just a full circle moment because I was just watching Degrassi

Worse than clerks, but still good It’s a pretty silly ending, typical of a rom-com, but maybe that’s how it was supposed to be? It’s just that the last 10 minutes are so… Naive?

I dodged getting Covid from my roommate two weeks ago, but then I caught some other gnarly upper respiratory bug. So I’ve been home alone all week, terminally online. Which is the perfect time for revisiting Mallrats. Is it good? I can’t commit to an objective answer. Does it hold up? Comedies seldom do. Do I love it? Yes.

Watched this in a salt room and had a great time! It was funny and light hearted and shockingly held up better than I thought it would! Probably going to watch Clerks for the first time soon.

I really just wanna be jason mewes in mallrats that’s all I want having those blueprints as a poster would be so cool I honestly really love this jay and bob, all I see is love trio halloween costume idea TS, brodie and the topless psychic “you two up for getting stoned?” “look who you’re asking.” all I can think about at the end is the length at which silent bob is hanging upside down bro is SO FAR FROM…

What the actual HELL did I just watch How is this legally allowed to exist I just got turned to pink mist by the automatic fire of this joke machine gun. The wildest and slickest dialogue I’ve ever heard with the best peformances one could possibly give. The physical comedy is unreal. NOT for anyone who is bothered by 90’s very crude humor. Stan Lee also is in this and gives a somehow touching dialogue I was not ready for.

Жесть финальное шоу мощное. Так-то послабее “Клерков”, как будто юморок упал по уровню, но тот же финал и сцена со Стэном Ли круты

This movie was so much better than clerks. The two main characters worked really well off each other and the plot was a little more coherent. The soundtrack was fire too especially Suzanne. Jay and Silent Bob were a lot funnier in this movie too and the game show at the end was cool but I wasn’t a big fan of Brodie (NOT TS) aura farming with unfunny quips constantly but that Gill dude deserved it for real 😂. I liked the topless fortune teller as well very funny LOL

Another story where the villain wasn’t a bad guy. Svenning was just trying to get his show made , and was looking out for his daughter.

Honestly, this is Kevin smiths most underrated film beside tusk. Coming fresh out of “Clerks” Kevin smith and Scott were still a hungry director and writer duo trying to make it into Hollywood, and this film proves it. It’s unfortunate it bombed in the box office

The world building of between this and Clerks is so interesting and natural. Why isn’t Jason Lee in anything except Kevin Smith movies and Alvin and the Chipmunks? He’s very funny and charismatic even as this total shit

What is this monstrosity? All my male friends love this flick but I grew up as a girl so I just can’t with this movie… It reminds me of when I used to hang out with immature guys in my teens/early twenties. They would say casually sexist remarks for laughs and I had to pretend I was OK with it to keep the peace. It’s very much of it’s time because kids don’t hang out in malls anymore thanks to…

This is such an incredibly funny movie, but also incredibly stupid. I have no idea how the 90’s were but through the movie’s general vibe, I was pretty clued in. Both main characters are dumb. Like extremely dumb. They both didn’t deserved their girlfriends back. Talk about crummy, loser alert.

i watched this with rachel so here’s the rachel review!!!! rachel here: this movie is so sillayyyyy ive never seen a kevin smith movie before so this was a first for me! very funny and entertaining even though the whole thing basically takes place in 1 setting. i’m so glad everyone got their happy ending. everyone’s face card in this movie is off the charts also, how did they do it? shoutout to susanne the orangutan also, the true star.

this one is pretty endearing, nostalgia definitely works in this movies favor but its kind of nice to see this kind of movie where it feels like we just followed two guys all day and they get into some shenanigans. Feels very sweet to watch a movie like this and see everybody treat everything like its the end of the world when the stakes are truly so incredibly low here. The barrage of dick jokes can get old but there’s a lot of funny writing here for me. Also Jason Lee here is kinda…

Stan Lee giving love advice. He might as well say his iconic catchphrase: “Excelsior!”

#SpeakingMyTruth Is this highly misogynistic? Absolutely. Does it have some cringe moments? Absolutely. Is it stupid as fuck? Absolutely. But it’s a fucking vibe. I haven’t felt this gender euphoric in awhile so that has to say something. Oh to be a stupid nerdy loser boy being rambunctious with his friends in the mall in the 90s💔 The Stan Lee cameo was everythinggggg 😢😢😢😢 even though his story was fake I still found it really sweet.

Most unfunny comedy i have ever seen. Every woman is treated like a sex object or plot point, the guys in this movie are irredeemable assholes and still get the girl in the end. There is not 1 girl in this movie that doesn’t get sexualized in some way. Not in a raunchy way, just in way that makes you uncomfortable. there are some funny jokes, but i dont watch a comedy for a few jokes, i watch it for…

I really liked this movie. Although it did really hit close to home with the toxic relationships because I used to be like that. It was very funny and watching it with my friend made the experience even better because we got to joke with the characters a lot and that made me feel like i was part of the movie. The starting scenes are kinda boring at first but then the move gets really good at the rising conflict. I had a good time watching this movie and the soundtrack was great. 4.5/5

I grabbed the Arrow blu ray recently and it was interesting to watch Smith’s introduction to the movie. I had no idea that this was a commercial and critical failure until now, cause yaknow what? I like it more than Clerks, and definitely my favorite of Smith’s work.

If you’ve ever worked in a mall…. You’ll get this. If you haven’t… please be patient with those that do…. “You know, I think you ought to get him some help. He seems to be really hung up on super heroes’ sex organs.” -Stan Lee ——— (at around 10 mins) Brodie’s comic book collection seen in the movie was director Kevin Smith’s collection at the time (which has grown considerably since). The collection is what Smith was able to purchase…
