We’ve done it. We’ve reached the end of the Kevin project and I can’t think of a more troubling, confounding possible conclusion than this. One that despite hearing about its premise second-hand was somehow still shocking to actually witness. For those not aware this opens on the wrinkly cast recreating the original Clerks to My Chemical Romance’s ‘The Black Parade’, before having Randal suffer the same heart attack Kevin Smith actually did in real life and kickstarting the ugliest-looking metafictional mid-life crisis therapy movie ever made and ends with Dante dying from an identical heart attack right before our eyes while literally watching the original two films in some sort of ghostly movie theater afterlife. (Made all the more disturbing…

Some notes: – The emotional high point of this movie for me came in its opening seconds, when Dante (Brian O’Halloran) arrives to open the Quick Stop and Randal (Jeff Anderson) strolls out of the neighbouring cannabis store (formerly, of course, a video store). I loved Kevin Smith’s original 1994 Clerks when I was a teenager and watched it many times. If you show me the guys from that movie looking older, I’m going to feel a little emotional. – Kevin Smith’s early films were dominated by scenes in which actors arranged in simple visual compositions delivered reams of dialogue in long, static takes. In the process, he developed a reputation for being a careless and unimaginative visual stylist. The…

Seeing Kevin live this time around (I don’t want to say how many other times I’ve seen him) it really put into perspective how much he detests his fans and yet gets off on their unwavering adulation. Nothing more pathetic than the Kevin Smith hive of cows cheering like its Rocky Horror Picture Show at every one of his stupid movies. It was really sick when Brian O’hallaran showed up trashed out of his mind and kept saying “If I would have time traveled back in time and told my younger self that I would be reenacting scenes from Clerks 30 years later, and that clerks would be the peak of my career I would slit my throat on the…

Clerks III is not a perfect movie. Some running gags go on for way too long, the filmmaking is not a strong suit and they really make NFT references (ew). But with that said, this is probably the most I’ve seen Kevin Smith just put his whole heart into a film. If anything, this film is just Smith fully putting his thesis from Clerks II to full use. It’s Smith’s love letter to the film and the characters that put him on the map. A showcase of how far Smith has come (for better or worse) and really does not hold back at points with how raw the emotion plays out. Jeff Anderson gets talked about a lot (and he’s…

i feel mean hating this movie because it’s so deeply personal and earnest and kevin smith seems like a nice guy but it’s so weirdly obsessed with the legacy of Clerks that it seems to skip everything that made that movie so enjoyable for some fairly cheap emotional beats. also god they can’t act. it’s charming when it’s your first movie but come on man. i know they’re your friends but i can’t care about them talking to ghosts or making Clerks but about fifty year olds when they can’t make me believe any of this is more than a table read of a script that probably should’ve been shelved like a previous version that included a theater shooting finale. idk kev maybe it’s time to hang it up.

It was fine. A little too dramatic for my liking. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I really expected. Really tugged away at the old heartstrings. I know Kevin Smith has a diehard fanbase, and that’s great. I’m mostly in the…like to dislike category. Meaning I like some of his movies, and dislike others. I’ll always love Jay and Silent Bob though. My wife and I recently decided to tackle Smith’s whole filmography, and we’re about done. Like 2 or 3 movies left I believe. It’s been an ok ride. Like I said, some good, some bad. I think Clerks 2 or Mallrats is probably my favorite. This one was like a love letter to the fans, and I can appreciate that. Getting all the old faces together. What the heck was up with Elias though…that was just…weird. It was fine to me, a decent closure to the series, but nothing great. ⭐️⭐️ 1/2

A retrospective of a man who’s career peaked in the 90’s, so there’s really like 30 years of a “I used to be something” baked into a miniature movie within this movie for about 40 minutes

Even though a lot of people hate Clerks 3, I thought it was great. It definitely was nearly as funny or interesting as the first two, but knowing what Kevin Smith went through in real life made it the so much better.

A movie that definitely feels like it was made not long after the pandemic. I was struggling to get into the first act because the visuals, jokes, directing and some of the acting felt incredibly off and after marathoning these back-to-back, it became really apparent early on that this was the worst of the three Clerks movies. However I do think once the main plot gets going I got way more invested and felt the jokes were hitting better even…

The view askewniverse watch (movie 8) Clerks lll Well now 13 days and 8 movies later I have officially fell in love with Kevin P. Smiths movies and his cinematic universe and holy shit I cried a lot during this film. Charles loved it too. This is the second time I saw a movie as part of a Fathom event after Betty White: A Celebration in January earlier this year. So I didn’t get any previews in front of the movie at all. Kevin Smith even mentioned during the cold opening before the movie started that Clerks III is the third and final installment of the Clerks trilogy. But I’m not gonna spoil the ending. In the film, Randal Graves, who…

Honestly, I am relieved to know that Kevin Smith can still make movies like this! While this is by no means perfect if you are a fan of the original then this is for you! A love letter to Clerks as a film and cultural moment, but also Smith recapturing those youthful feelings of listlessness but in a much more mature and heartfelt way, a companion piece of similar feelings captured thirty years apart. Lowkey got me in my feels.

It’s been quite a journey watching the art of the View Askew Universe grow and change. The same silly kinds of gags but with a deeper appreciation of life, if not exactly more maturity. Or at least not with a stiff and stuffy kind of maturity. There are certainly heavier themes. Worth diving into even if you’ve only seen the first Clerks movie (a few lines might have surprises or references you don’t understand) and aren’t willing to see some of the others for some reason.

I’ve watched Clerks III again… ugh, God. Let’s talk about frustrations. One of my biggest criticisms of this film is… filming Clerks. in Clerks III was a bad idea. While I know the third installment is basically a love letter to Clerks., the Quick Stop, that time of his life, and now uses Smith’s own modern struggles and reflections to build itself on, still… it shouldn’t make sense. Clerks. was a 1994 cult classic created by passionate 20-year-old filmmakers, actors,…

It has its funny moments but it’s really just an emotionally driven remake of the OG. They don’t forget to call back ALLLL the old jokes, which gets lame to me and also just feels like lazy writing after a while. This felt more like a fan film than an official sequel and they just crammed in all these heartwarming moments that throw off the tone completely. Like I came here for the same non stop raunchy humor the first…

A film about the guys from Clerks that set out to make the movie Clerks, where I expect the movie version of the characters will also want to make a movie… it’s like the Inception of Clerks, and I’m into it. Also, based on my reaction to the more dramatic portions of this movie, I have genuinely come to care about the characters here in the View Askewniverse. How about that? … except for Elias, still not a fan. Shoutout…

This movie opens with a pretty decent montage catching us up with the characters we know and love and where they are currently in life. Jay and Silent Bob dealing right outside a dispensary owned by themselves is a funny place to take the two. Outside of that, welcome back Dante, Randal, and Elias. They’re old now and that’s funny (not). Randal has a heart attack, and now faced with mortality now wants to make a movie. But you’ll never…

Too much speechifying, too much “remember this?” and not enough of what made Clerks actually good, just two idiots talking shit behind a counter because they have nowhere else to be, which comes from a very from a real place. I respect the hell out of telling your friends you love them before it’s too late, but respect doesn’t make it good. It’s honest, but it’s not fun, and Clerks should be fun.

Seeing as how Clerks reflect different stages of Kevin Smith’s life I expected his heart attack to play a part in the story. The meta commentary of making the original Clerks is sort of fun but the whole premise is uncreative. Smith’s filmmaking has regressed and this feels like a lazy cash grab.
-
G
It’s like a love letter to the original Clerks, but again, like Clerks II, misses all the stuff that made it great. I mean, you can’t just make Clerks again, since it’ll just be the same formula of “nothing’s happening but the dialogue,” and so they literally remake Clerks in it. I think it’s moreso a movie about Kevin Smith; the main character gets a heart attack and also writes movies. This and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot seem more…

KEVIN SMITH’S BEST MOVIE SINCE CLERKS II! Funny, emotional & maybe the most mature of the trilogy. Heavily basing it’s story on Smith’s real life heart attack, the movie goes meta with Randal wanting to essentially make the original 1994 classic that gave us Smith & his universe after his close brush with death. O’Halloran & Anderson are FLAWLESS here. O’Halloran gives a very mature and heartbroken performance here, his final scene in the movie is phenomenal! Anderson is giving a very similar…

The main pleasure in this movie is in recognizing actors and lines from the original “Clerks”, but as a big fan of that film that was enough pleasure to warrant at least one watch. I’ve always appreciated Smith’s pre-Tusk body of work on an aesthetic level and for what it represented regarding the changing tides of scrappy independent filmmaking in the Miramax era. But I also never found much of that stuff particularly funny or engaging (*though I know a lot of people say Dogma is very good. I need to watch that). I call out his pre-Tusk lineup specifically because the consensus seems to be pretty unanimous that there’s little to defend of Smith’s…

What’s a butt thief? Finally finished the View Askewniverse film line up with the final movie in the Clerks trilogy. Man, for someone who’s lived off of the first Clerks, I loved this one a lot. This really added some serious soul to the characters I loved in the previous ones. I genuinely got teary eyed over some jerk-offs I idolized growing up. Though I loved the movie in its entirety, I think my favorite part was Kevin Smith’s disembodied voice…

This movie actually uses the term “chud” multiple times, and it kills me that I don’t like this movie more. Also, Kevin Smith writing Randall saying he views his directing prowess as “Retail Richard Linklater” is way too accurate to how I see Kevin Smith (I like Kevin Smith, by the way). Take a shot every time this film has a needle drop, you’ll be fucking dead by the forty minute mark.

“You saved my life, man. Jay has Inspector Gadget teeth. This is the third time I’m writing this cuz fucking letterboxd keeps fucking itself and deleting my shit! Godfuckingdammit!! From the top, there’s some solid emotional beats and Brian O’Halloran is quite good an actor at this point. He sells it. As for the rest of it, there’s a major tonal dissonance wrecking the movie. Doesn’t help that it isn’t all that funny either. The flat humor keeps undercutting the drama in weird and ass…

What happened Kevin Smith? This is such a weird mixed bag of good and awful Smith filmmaking. Which is wild because when he’s good he’s good, but when it’s bad it’s really fucking awful. This is night and day different from the Kevin Smith I grew up with. He’s a nice guy, but apparently “fame” cost him the ability to make a good movie. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma. I was worried I would have a similar reaction to this as Owen does in I Saw The TV Glow rewatching The Pink Opaque and it not holding up. Except feeling that about a new movie with old characters. Holy shit this movie, it could be that I rewatched the whole trilogy back to back but Dante’s story being as solid as it was in this killed me. Kevin Smith returns to his 1994 debut for a third helping, in hopes there’s still meat on the bone (with all due respect to Smith, who is a vegan). When the cult classic received its first sequel in 2006, a mediocre new millennium update on the original — I was hoping that was it — the convenience store was closed because it was time to move on. Twenty years later, Smith revisits the Leonardo, NJ location, again, and leaves you…

Better than Clerks 2 mostly because, for the first time in the series, I didn’t actively hate Randall every moment he’s on screen. Not as good as Clerks 2 because, where Clerks 2 included character growth and development for every character other than Randall, Clerks 3 attempts to rehabilitate Randall from being an insufferable prick who destroys the lives of everyone around him, to being a marginally self aware person whose unending need for external validation and attention leads inadvertently…

Some or even a lot of these jokes probably aren’t going to age well, but the story was actually very moving and works as a fitting end to the Clerks trilogy. It’s not Smith’s best work, but it’s nice to just see him hanging out with his friends and making movies.

“a sequel? what am i, a hack?” self-sucking, annoying mythologizing, and crypto shilling aside, this is still an improvement from the disaster that was clerks II. it’s like saying a slap in the face is an improvement on getting tortured for eternity, but still. the world would probably be better off with clerks just being a pretty good standalone 90s comedy, but this is if anything a decently compelling way to continue it. like, i can’t hate on it too…

I get that this is autobiographical for Kevin Smith in a lot of ways but I think I’ve just grown out of his style by now. It’s unfortunate that I grow do like this film less and less as time goes on. I still think it’s a worthy conclusion to the story, and tonally feels like a natural evolution from the original. However this movie is completely inoffensive. It’s not very good or “creative”. But not nearly as pathetic as I expected. Honestly, maybe this would have worked better if Zack and Miri Make a Porno didn’t already exist? Its shortcomings are more than made up for by the fact that this…

meta… I hate meta. my idea for Clerks IV is Randall accidentally sets Dante’s dead body on fire and he’s left with his ashes. He goes around the world to find the best place to spread Dante’s ashes and we’re basically on a road trip movie (it was always a road trip movie, just set in a convenience store) and Dante’s ashes interact with Randall the whole trip. Then Randall realizes he should just spread the ashes over the roof of the convenience store and we tilt down to Silent Bob covered in Dante’s ashes. Cut. that’s even more meta @kevin smith

Wow, meta. I’ve never seen a whole movie set in a convenience store before.

Still stands as one of the most emotional movies I’ve ever watched, I don’t care if it’s a funny silly series I genuinely bawled.

greatest opening welcome to the black parade scene ever.

why is this movie so fucking sad

I wish that they had stopped with Clerks and not made this a franchise. Most of the humor is outdated or so of the time for 2022 that it will be. The beauty of Clerks is that it was relatable beyond time, so despite being very distinctly 90s coded, everyone goes thru what they go thru. I would imagine that these people would change over 28 years, not get flanderized.

After binge watching all the Askewniverse over the last few days I want to say this is far from a perfect movie but I do think it’s a good emotional sendoff for these two clerks

i feel like an 50 year old comedy enjoyer man while watching this but if you don’t know the story behind it, the universe and the story that kevin created you don’t understand shit anyway. i might be 18 and maybe i didn’t saw the movie in 90’s and then watch the rest of it when it first came out but i grew up with this and i remember when i first watch this movie i was bawling my eyes…

count how many celebrities just said “I’ll fuck anything that moves!” seriously, this was just a bunch of nostalgia bait, but it was still good. i wish there were more original jokes but instead it was just a bit too dramatic for me. but an extra half star for Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.

feels way more like a sequel to clerks than clerks II and kevin smith being really self reflective in a way that doesnt feel too indulgent. dante and randal remain his least interesting protagonists but the leads give their best performances here and genuinely brought a tear to my eye. kevin smith may not be for everyone but man i am glad he is for me

I’m actually pleasantly surprised at how solid this was. the nostalgia, reenactments, and obvious references to the previous clerks movies and other kevin smith movies were great. it was nice to see how decent and funny a second sequel was, especially one that didn’t take itself too seriously at all while making jokes about itself. not to mention, the few moments where things got emotional. that’s all I have to say, that and clerks still has so many incredible one liners and retorts

why tf dry humor movies so weird and funny

IMO the weakest of the trilogy but the feels were definitely there. “I saw the movie of my life flash before my eyes… and it fucking sucked”

yo Kev buddy let’s go back to making me laugh and stop with the tears. once again love to see how Dante and Randal’s relationship develops and how Randal is so eager to relive his glory days while Dante wants nothing more than to leave them behind. my only complaint is Veronica should’ve been in more of the movie, have her and Dante reconnect by reliving their relationship for Randal’s meta movie and hell, maybe Dante can even survive his heart attack and realize what’s important to him, after all not every woman brings u lasagna at work and Becca would want him to move on

A major step down from the other two Clerks movies. You can tell Kevin Smith was going through some existential shit when he wrote this, and I think the premise is interesting, but the quality of his writing has gone down a lot. There’s something about Kevin Smith’s writing style that worked really well for me with the first Clerks and started working less and less the further I got into the View Askewniverse. Also, Jesus Christ, some of the…

Just a complete dud. Kevin Smith has proven once again that he has nothing left as a filmmaker. You can tell why this movie was in development hell for so long — it’s a stupid idea. An unfunny bummer of a film. A totally unnecessary retread. This didn’t need to exist. Move along now, there’s nothing to see here. 1 star

This movie isn’t incredibly funny or well shot, but is the definition of earnest and gets genuinely emotional by the end

Randall old. I’m sad

I can (and have) re-watch Clerks anytime. Clerks II’s still capable of getting replayed on some occasions. Clerks III hasn’t been watched again since my initial playing of it in 2023. It’s an immediate feel trip roughly 5 minutes into the film and then becomes an unofficial remake of Clerks. I understand where Kevin Smith was going with this, I’m just not gelling with it as much as I did with the first two films. I admired and appreciated the final moments, both the song they chose for the closing credits and Kevin Smith’s spoken comments throughout.

It was very meta but not all that funny or interesting.
