“Mike Flanagan is not a one-trick pony!” – Mike Flanagan, professional one-trick pony. A narratively creative story of familial dread and past trauma told through looming atmosphere, drawn-out dialogue, and snippets of parallel timelines where an unexplained supernaturally-endowed object may or may not be the cause of everyone’s problems—no, it’s not The Haunting of Hill House or Doctor Sleep or The Haunting of Bly Manor or [insert somber Flanagan dread piece], because THIS time there’s a giant ugly mirror involved. Duh. He might only have one schtick, but idk, that schtick just continues to work for me, man. The writing is strong and flows naturally, the acting is on point (especially for all three redheads, Gillan, Sackhoff, and Basso),…

I want to say that this movie was a pleasant surprise, but it wasn’t… not because it was bad, but because I was expecting something great, and that’s exactly what I got. If you’re familiar with director Mike Flanagan, it’s probably because you were lucky enough to stumble across his 2011 film Absentia, which is in my opinion one of the finest low-budget horror films to come out in the last ten years or so (check it out on Netflix if you’ve yet to see it; there are some flaws in the performances, but every other aspect of the film is astounding). As soon as I finished watching Absentia – this was about a year ago – I looked up…

A lot of the individual beats here are sort of generic on their own (scary ghost lady especially) but the tricky structure and the story’s internal logic recode them into something really precarious and fun.

You know you are watching a horror film or miniseries directed and written by Mike Flanagan if it has: – Characters traumatized by an event in their childhood. – Those characters have issues with their parents. – And most importantly features Kate Siegel.

Confused as I always am. I genuinely can’t believe they ended it with him killing his sister omg. Lowkey hated the sister a bit because what do you mean you’re bringing your brother who just got released from I’m guessing an institue to immediately do this and relive all the trauma. Stupid asses didn’t even defeat it in the end genuinely I’m pissed I just watched this omg.

Mike, you almost had me there. Love your work bud but that ending was bleak as hell. And that just isn’t the mood I’m in right now. All that said, original concept with potential for a good sequel or prequel.

All you had to do to fix this movie was have Michael (their one external fail safe) not get killed and instead arrive at the last second to push Kaylee out if the way so that the mirror shattered itself. Edit: another idea. Brother is choking the sister in front of the mirror. The ghosties are watching and having a grand old time. The cops arrived and one of them is standing from afar aiming his gun at him telling…

I really wanted to like this movie because it sets up a pretty interesting premise, like a lot of Mike Flanagan’s movies. But I spent way too much time waiting for it to get good. It has a great cast, but seriously, nothing I would consider genuinely scary happens for the majority of the movie. You might find some of the events creepy, but it all feels pretty surface level. Nothing really stuck with me or felt particularly memorable by the end.

A great, creepy, and genuinely suspenseful horror movie. One of its biggest strengths is how effectively it blurs the line between reality and hallucination. After a while, you start questioning what is actually happening and what is only in the characters’ heads, and the movie handles that confusion extremely well without making it feel completely random. The past storyline is also integrated naturally into the present instead of feeling like unnecessary exposition. The story itself is interesting, the acting is…

One of my all time favorites. Such a mind trip of a movie. It’s a wild thing watching something and not knowing if you can believe it. I love how the different timelines combine to unfold the story in both past and present at the same time. It’s brilliant and unique. I still wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and avoid looking into the mirror. Such good tension throughout. It falls a little short for me in the 3rd act when things start to drag just a little. Still an amazing movie.. so terrifying. I love it.

As I tick off my Mike Flanagan list – I’ve now experienced Oculus – which is about a possessed mirror that casts its evil upon its any of its owners & their household. Good film. Has some creepy moments in the third act, plus a reasonable plot leading up to them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Predictable. The trailer also gave WAY too much away, I had already seen half the movie by the time we actually watched it so the twists didn’t hit as much as they could have. One great twist at the end but again it was just kinda foreshadowed a little too much. Also it jumped between memories of the past and moments of the present so much that I wasn’t sure what was real and what was the past and what the mirror was making people do. It just wasn’t coherent

Well that was kind of not what I was expecting. Even though the going back and forth from past to present was a little confusing at times, I think it was a super interesting take. I honestly kind of guessed it was going to be either one of the two at the end but just not sure which one and how it was going to play out. Overall, I enjoyed it and it was a nice little jump scare and creepy for sure.

Karen Gillian is super intense all the time. Your brother just got released. Maybe take him for a relaxing weekend at the beach instead of dragging him back to relive a murder. A terrible sister. This works best when the mirror is messing with them. Flanagan was a little rusty at the other moments, but he truly masters those in his recent work. Will always be a fan of Katee Sackhoff. She’s really good here.

I had a multi-paragraph review ready to go praising the hell out of this movie and then it got deleted so instead I’ll just say that it’s a good movie with lots of cool cerebral elements and a very strong performance by the leading duo. Only real issues I have with it are that they immediately confirm the mirror is real leading to no real way to build up a mystery as to whether the brother or sister are right…

Underrated. Pissed a lot of people off with the ending but hey not every horror movie has a happy ending 🤷🏻♀️ and its still great! The back n forth of them being kids to present day is sick. This movie is actually scary even with the cheesy cgi ghosts its still fuckin scary. Plus it has Karen Gillan and shes great, so yeah just watch it if you’re on the fence.

It’s a movie about a haunted mirror so there’s a cheesy element to it. One line in particular sticks out, “I bet you’re hungry.” Don’t look here if you want a light hearted horror…it is a nail biter though… ‘Dog’ lives, although is weirdly just let to run free into, I don’t know, the woods to get lost? Overall this was fine.

I’ve been wanting to rewatch this for a while now, just wanted to have my own copy first. This being Mike Flanagan’s follow up to his first feature film, Absentia(2011) about a family who acquires an ancient mirror that appears to be cursed or evil. After prior events as children, both now older brother and sister return to confront the evil it had caused them when they were younger. I love the idea of an evil mirror. I also love…

I can really see the blueprints of Hill House and Bly Manor in this, but my god does this have a lot more of a bleak ending than im used to with Flanagan. Also, the whole second half I had no idea what was happening, and that worked really well somehow. The pacing however, could definitely use some work. Goes from 0 to 100 real quick around halfway through.
-
M
Seeing that this was one of Flanagan’s work I immediately knew I was getting into and that I would love it, however I do have one issue with this movie and that issue being that the first act felt unbearably slow and even boring, had this movie had a better paced or slightly more interesting first 30 minutes this could’ve easily been 5 star in my eyes; however oculus being Mike flanagan’s first(I think?) big screen movie it’s understandable that…

I can’t say anything else before acknowledging Kaylie’s hair. Like, she’s introduced with a cutscene of her fiercely walking while swinging her cunty ass ponytail. The movie got messy but that hair stayed laid through the whole thing. And the bangs to the side? That was a MASTERPIECE! Besides that I really wanted to give this a three and a half stars or even four but the ghosts threw me off a little bit. The story worked very well with…

Oculus follows siblings Kaylie and Tim Russell, whose childhood was destroyed after their father brought home an antique mirror called the Lasser Glass, which seemingly drove their parents insane and ultimately resulted in their deaths and Tim being institutionalized for killing his father. Years later, Tim is released believing the tragedy had rational explanations, while Kaylie has spent years researching the mirror and is convinced it is supernatural. She retrieves it and sets up cameras, timers, and a weighted anchor…

Proof psychological horror can produce just as much slop as jumpscare horror. This movie feels like a YouTube short film stretched out to feature length. It spends an hour and a half building up to an extremely telegraphed and boring kill by sprinkling in lore that only serves to detract from its horror and repetitive scenes of dumb bitches arguing with and gaslighting each other or scenes where a bad thing appears to happen only for them to realize it…
-
E
I will forever view that actor as the guy from the blue lagoon remake that I used to repeatedly watch

Oculus is such a great film. I’m a huge fan of Mike Flanagan’s work. He has this incredible way of making horror feel like so much more than just horror. The storyline is so clever and interesting, and the actors did such a great job with their characters. Even though there aren’t many jump scares, his movies and series still have this eerie, unsettling atmosphere that makes them genuinely scary.
