C/W: Mentions of rape in the second and third paragraphs. I used to be so angry. I loathed with gnashed teeth the many pesky nuisances of the world; the materialism and the culture it spawned predicated on image and envy that came to fruition during the years I came of age; the rampant, unfettered greed that surrounded me in the form of crony capitalism, consumerist bodies and commodified existences; the false pretenses of pseudo-intellectuals, neo-liberals and hypocritical authoritative figures… the list goes on and on. I spent so much of my time and energy thinking about (and occasionally drumming up the courage to furiously speak or even act out against) these things that I saw as cancers to humanity. I…

Cinema in stutter. Bent. Folded. Kicked to the sea. A fuck you to some patterns. To your beloved three acts story, or the separating thick three walls. One of the character said he could chew words properly by talking in stutter. So does this film. Scattered and stuttered. Play it out loud. Chew every scene. And the next scene. The next lie. Lie of lies. The surrealism of time that flies too fast, too evil and with no mercy. Chew them all properly, by feeling the mystical feelings from ethereal sounds of screams and moans. The rebel yells, punk rock music and oriental touches. Watch the angst and the scare and the vulgar acts of movements. The breaking downs and…

***One of the best 150 films I have ever seen.*** “These youngsters are my age”, is the first thing that came to my mind. As the opening sequence has the protagonist speaking directly to us, embodying an eager sense of freedom devoid of impositions so long set by society and looking for a release after so much time, I identified. Three scenes later after the furious opening credits, this same young man is seen running over a railway in an endless reverse-moving tracking shot constantly shifting from left to right with the soundtrack playing loud. The film ends similarly, but with him screaming, also over a railroad, but this final shot is more self-controlled, as his strength gradually weakens. My…

I love this film with all my heart, so here is an embarrassing story related to a screening of Throw Away Your Books Rally In The Streets that I had a few years back. So it was spring break at my university but the campus was still open for students but it was mostly dead quiet. Me and my friend were film students so we took advantage of the emptiness and decided to screen a selection of films in a huge lecture theatre perfect for watching films in. One day, two of us decided to screen Throw Away Your Books. We turned up the volume to max and switched off the lights, and lied down on the seats (because they are…

Trying to imagine freedom when there’s so little around you. An impressive achievement in how it constant moves around opposite feelings/ideas/strategies in a manner that doesn’t cancel them out, but make them inform and enrich each other. An affirmative movie in the middle of pure bleakness.

This was pretentious as fuck. The type of film that jerks itself off for 3hrs to convey a message that could be easily illustrated in a much better film. Honestly reading the top reviews for this gives me hay fever. Jesus. I love Japanese New Wave, I loved Funeral Parade of Roses (which one could argue is a similar film), but this was just a ball of nonsense that masquerades as intellectual gold. Better films have been made that illustrate a lost, angry generation. Ones that don’t meander around the runtime, distracted from revealing anything sort of a cohesive social ideology beyond “west sucks”. Yeah we know America sucks, can you atleast show us why, and how your characters come…

tw: rape i’m so fucking tired of political/experimental/art films exploiting the sexual trauma of women. there is a harrowing gang rape scene in this film that goes on for SO long and it made me feel physically ill to the point that i could barely stomach the rest of the film. wonder what it must be like for people who can watch this and come away from it praising the power of cinema as though they watched the ending 10 minutes in some kind of vacuum and the rest of the film with a numbness for the way terayama uses rape as a way to make a political statement that has no interest in the effects of trauma or really any concern for the female experience. but uhhh cool soundtrack and mid-shot aperture changes!

I’m not going to lie, I watched this because the title seemed cool. In hindsight I wish I had read up on some context first… Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets is the ultimate rebellious film. Any and every convention (political, social, cinematic) is not only ignored, but purposefully and gloriously ripped to shreds. The narrative itself is hard to explain seeing as though it jumps from being an anti-capitalistic adrenaline rush to a Freudian fever dream, but a few things remain constant. The music is sensational and constantly fills each scene with momentous energy, additionally the film is constantly and creatively breaking the fourth wall, whether that means the characters speak directly to the camera about the…

Extremely loud, wild, carefree, emotional and provocative, idealizing vulgarity and angst in the most avant-garde way possible, the fourth wall is completely demolished right from the start, and the film crew literally stands together in one picture to announce the end of the film ; Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets is the record of a boy’s life as he hit rock bottom, filmed with a mixture of styles extracted from music videos and documentaries, it is a film you run and scream with while channeling the rebellious side you never knew you had, the music shouts at your face and encourages you to shout back. Feels like the epitome of Japanese New Wave cinema despite being unlike anything I’ve seen before, a punk’s acid trip, sex and riot and rock and roll all under a psychedelic filter, open book of infinite margins —– I can watch this again and again.

A film concerned with ending film itself by breaking all conventions of film. Why? It already tells you in the title, to throw away your books and rally in the streets. Books (and film, and games, and media in general) are important to be clear, but what is the reason one reads, watches, plays? Primarily it should be to educate, to help inform the recipient and improve their life, but often it ends up as a way of passing time. There is nothing wrong with entertainment but over-indulgence leads us to forget why we do it in the first place, as shown regularly in the film where intellectuals who spend all their time reading are the most disconnected from society.…

“I’ve got no home. I’ve got no country. There’s no world for me. None of that existed right from the start…” One of the boldest feature debuts in the history of (Japanese) cinema, Terayama’s cheeky, anarcho-poetic experiment is directed with a no-fucks-given attitude, rebelling against authority, tradition, conformism, the world and even self, with the fourth wall-breaking monologues, documentary-style interviews, music video-like interludes and whatnots breaking a deliberately non-linear narrative. At its angst-driven heart longing for freedom, it is a…

Bizarre filters, a fragmented and chaotic narrative, frenzied rock music, nihilistic poetry—inner visions and the intractability of reality coalesce into one. In Anpo Protests, as the country shifted from radical political movements to a more stable social climate and the international red movement began to wane, the younger generation found itself increasingly adrift in the society it inhabited. After the revolution’s failure, the real challenge was no longer “how to overthrow the old world,” but rather, “once the old world…

As an audiovisual experiment, this is incredible. Every single frame is meticulously composed and lit, every song is transcendent, and yet, I felt nothing. I get it, the film is focused far more on being intellectually stimulating and making a statement than being ‘enjoyable’, in fact it aims to make its statement by being the opposite of a consumable, easy-to-watch piece of entertainment. Despite this intention though, I simply cannot coerce myself into liking the film just because the dullness…

How it felt like reading Osamu Dazai. There is too much to speak of this film, it was something that remind us how free cinema should be and is. Crowded with symbolism that could means the world and nothing, taping on a depressing yet not even real story line, obscure colour and cinematography throughout that is both inviting and repellent. Everytime it breaks the fourth wall was something special, for it was the core of its rebellious nature, we are…

The direction is free-flowing, sometimes reminiscent of theater, dreams, or nightmares, with powerful images and a particularly sinister atmosphere. Some scenes are provocative but also allow us to reflect on freedom, identity and the place of the individual in society. However, this highly experimental approach can also be a drawback. The film deliberately lacks structure and classic storytelling, which can make some scenes difficult to understand or give the impression that they are gratuitous. Some passages, particularly those dealing with…

“What are you doing here, sitting in a dark room waiting for something to happen when the real action is, and always has been, out in the streets?” Terayama is so unfathomably brilliant. I will say, I enjoyed Pastoral: To Die in the Country slightly more than this, but that’s just nitpicking. To call this a genius, eye opening, all time great piece of media would be nothing short of a gross understatement. Absolutely incredible.

The whole movie was nothing like I had seen before. Fourth wall wasn’t even a thing in this movie that itself made it so real to watch. So many messages were getting conveyed, the soundtrack is just the cherry on top, the movie felt like a rebel to everything like peace, freedom, hardships, fear etc.

Soundtrack goes hard, aesthetics go hard, quotes all go hard. It takes “show, don’t tell” to another level whereby it is the form itself, the structure of the film or lack thereof, by which it attempts to shake/challenge bourgeois ideology. While it might stumble here and there, it does well to channel this punk and activist spirit of the youth movement of its time and asks us to smash the structures of power at be, both out in the world and in our minds.

Absolutely crazy movie. The most wacko experimental nuberu bagu film I’ve seen yet. A lot of the time it’s straight sensory overload, and at other times I’m left scratching my head, but when I consider the time this film came out in it feels like a blunt statement on current conflicts. The film makes a critique of sexual violence, and the absurdity of everything going on makes it hard to fully take its critiques seriously, but the point is still…

Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets is unlike any movie I had seen before, and I doubt I will ever watch anything remotely similar in the future. IT’S A TRULY CRAZY MOVIE WTF 😭😭😭 So far, this is the craziest experimental film I’ve ever watched. I actually like how the director uses metaphors to illustrate Me’s situation with a fragile, hand-built airplane, and how he depicts the human condition through people’s flaws. For those of you that don’t know me in person, I’ve had a pretty major stutter all my life that in adulthood waxes and wanes between annoyance and pretty debilitating communication failure. It’s endlessly frustrating (and the older I get, the more fed up) how impatient interactions become, how mischaracterized or ill-meant dialogues turn. The “Stuttering Is An Ideology” monologue is really beautiful and touching for me then, rainbow smudge and swelling music and all, and is exactly as serious…

(CW, this film is about comfort women, Korean genocide, and Japanese guilt over war crimes.) How lucky we are to live in a time where works of art like this are accessible any where on the planet. I am reading Lee Jae-eui, Hwang Sok-yong, and Jeon Yong-ho’s experience of the Gwangju Uprising right now, and this film was a potent reminder of what the student movements did for peace and progress in the most dystopian circumstances.

Breaks all the conventions every movie I’ve seen follows, but doesn’t do it for simply no reason or out of pretentiousness. The world around this movie is collapsing, so the structure should too. So many awful things happen here, but it makes for one of the greatest movies I’ve seen! It’s one of those movies that I can’t fathom someone ever making again. The ending is especially unreal! ‘Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets’, 1971, uno dei più importanti film sperimentali d’avanguardia del mondo. Il tema centrale è una critica alla realtà dei media in generale (cinema, letteratura, musica ecc…) nel momento in cui crea individui alienati dalla loro realtà. Guerra, violenza e disperazione esistono fuori e voi vi rintanate nel mondo falso dei sogni? E’ la domanda che il protagonista di questo capolavoro si pone. E la risposta è… si. Vivid cinematography that overwhelmingly POPS. A disorganized tribute to intellectual and pop culture, advancing progressive ethos championed by a band of the disillusioned, disabled youth celebrating acting, poetry, anti-nationalism, Marxism, and erotica. TWYBRITS has defiance in every breath that it even betrays the cinema in the end, knowing it’s powerful but insufficient. Cinema solely belongs in the dark. poser. yeah, yeah, deconstruct cinema. What about deconstructing internalized misogyny? that’d be 100% more punk. this isn’t even anarchy, it’s more of a façade.

“as long as there is a body, it will be like this”. seems to put it to me that being an organism is all rape. everything’s just degrees of acceptability in how you have your way with things. we want very understandably some tenderness. in seeking it out, we force ourselves on our object and suck all we can out of it, as legally or illegally as we can square with ourselves, and thank God we have parsimonious contracts to…

Once again mindblowing 10/10 movie if not for the one, unnecessary, overly long, out of place 🍇 scene.

Impressively pretentious and self-indulgent. Essentially a disjointed mashup of themes and ideas that intend to be subversive and may be individually interesting, but in execution, quickly becomes extremely unenjoyable and tedious. The intentionally abstract and abrasive style is annoying and ineffective. There’s next to nothing on a character level, and the plot is a mess. There are occasionally interesting visuals and a unique soundtrack, but even that is underwhelming. The 2-hour-plus runtime is terribly paced and drags severely. It’s clearly low-budget and not very well-made, but for its time, it’s understandable. I quickly lost any interest. Painfully dull and severely overrated.

Man this movie was just a ball of nothingness and just didn’t do it for me. Look, I get it, post war Japan, the perfect era for a perfect revolution, and that’s what I was expecting. Instead I got a movie about characters I barely cared about wondering without meaning throughout almost half of the movie. It was just a waste of time at that point. I wanted to feel this movie but it just fell flat for me. The…

i don’t know why people hype this film up when the message is delivered in such an uninspiring way, using rape for shock value but i guess the cinematography is stunning.

Excellent. Loud. Phenomenal soundtrack. The definition of impotent adolescent rage. Punk as fuck. The opening and closing are so incredibly strong that the third act drag feels especially rough. Some of the vignettes were a touch long in my opinion but at the end of the day it’s New Wave… we’re supposed to break rules.

It’s loud, electrifying, messy and alive. Half political manifesto, half psychedelic concert. Youthful rage has rarely been this colorful. One of those movies you could enjoy with the sound turned up and the subtitles off.

Little rambling review The biggest praise I can give this movie was that the way the soundtrack worked into the story was actually quite cool. The use of the plane as a narrative piece representing his aspirations and lofty dreams despite his circumstances, to never rise above the ground and eventually burn was strong. Also, the movie’s color palette changing at intervals was visually interesting. The gang r@pe scene is the most glaring issue for me. A multi-minute scene dedicated…

I wanted to like this film, I did. The Japanese film industry has produced more than its fair share of classics so I was curious what the indie film scene had to offer, especially coming from a director associated with the left-wing underground. Suffice to say, I was sorely dissappointed. Shuji Terayama’s Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (Sho o sute yo machi e deyô in its original Japanese) is an experimental film that paints the life of…

I get the point that’s trying to be made but that doesn’t mean I have to like it how they did it. Admittedly maybe It’s partially on me for not looking up content warnings for a 1970s avant-garde counterculture movie. Fork in kitchen I guess. I agree with the messages of the movie, and I thought it was interesting how it’s shot to make the viewer feel like we’re intruding on every scene. I really did find the movie interesting…

A vibrant and completely wild journey through the frustrations and the social shifts of the youth culture during a very specific historical moment. I loved the energy and how the individual episodes kept shifting in such a playful and unexpected way in the city. It prioritizes mood and style and it captures the specific intensity of a generation trying to find its own voice. The visual experimentation was absolutely mind-blowing and immediate.
