Netflix tries Saving Private Ryan…and emphasis on TRIES. For being a non-Hollywood Dutch film the production was actually pretty good and the film had some decent action moments. The script though felt like it lacked focus, there were two main subplots that were pretty pointless and should’ve been cut because this film felt longer than it needed to be. The performances were also mid, not bad just lacking a bit, that said the GOAT Tom Felton was in this and that’s always a treat. Overall it was an ok WW2 film bordering on WW2-slop.

I found The Forgotten Battle to be a gripping and tumultuous depiction of World War II. While it occasionally lost focus due to the multitude of characters, I believe this mirrored the chaotic nature of the war itself. Connecting fully with the characters proved challenging, not due to any shortcomings in their performances; rather, it stemmed from the limited screen time each character received. Despite commendable performances all around, the abundance of lead roles in the movie meant that we only scratched the surface with each one. There are brilliant elements to this film, but each is pieced together so incompetently that it fails to tell a coherent story. There are simply too many characters that we are asked to care for, and where I understand that the filmmakers were attempting to show the different perspectives of the giant clusterfuck that was World War II, the synthesis of the stories wasn’t great, and some did not land how they were clearly intended to. It’s never really sure if it wants to be brutally realistic or melodramatically sentimental, and this creates a jarring discrepancy in tone, emotion and ultimate impact.

Existem elementos legais neste filme, mas cada um é montado de forma tão incompetente que não consegue contar uma história coerente. Há uma boa intenção para mostrar como foi horrível a Segunda Guerra Mundial. O roteiro não se decide em mostrar algo realmente certo se quer ser brutalmente realista ou melodrama sentimental, e isso cria uma discrepância chocante mas extremamente boa, emoção e impacto final.

A typical Dutch movie, but on a much bigger scale. The storytelling might feel different from the usual “Hollywood” style, and when you’re not used to it might even be harder to follow. This one, to me, finds itself side by side with another Dutch war movie De Oost (The East). While the movie is about way, at its core its a drama (like most Dutch movies). Its not about the action but the story! But oh my do we get do good war action!!

A different theatre of WW2 to the usual centred around the fighting to access the harbour in Antwerp. Grim heroic military action, brave partisans risking it all and a pretty gritty realistic tone. Definitely worth a watch.

A great film. It truley shows the horror and emotional pain of everyone experiencing war, from the Allies, Axis and civilians of the Second World War. Some of the shots are fantasic, and the moments of silence really bring out what people are feeling. Really nice and well-played and well-produced and directed. But damn, the story script really has a lot of holes. If the team just ambushed those germans in the boat after leaving the plane!! Película bélica bastante meh. A nivel visual las escenas bélicas son inmejorables dando una visión de la guerra muy muy gráfica, dura y realista (a nivel táctico abundan las ideas de bombero pero bueno). La trama con los tres personajes y un historia que se entrelaza no me ha molado mucho y para mí tenía bastantes puntos malillos y poco creíbles. Para verla una vez y ya, la verdad es que quitando las escenas de batalla (que son tres) el resto de la película vale entre poco y nada.

I’m pretty mixed on The Forgotten Battle. As far as war films go, I don’t think it really differentiates itself enough to be that interesting, but as far as “another one of these” goes, it’s competently made. There are some tense setpieces and well-directed battle sequences that stand out a lot! I also found the cast too bloated—I liked some people, like the brother and the sister, but it needed to be trimmed (and get rid of blood Tom Felton!!). Still, it’s alright for what it is.

Amazing Dutch film on one of the lesser known events of World War 2! I really liked how there was three different storylines woven together, it was done seamlessly and a way that kept my attention the entire way throughout. Susan Radder as Teuntje Visser was just phenomenal, and I’m glad she got so much screentime throughout this film.
