Very clearly the only Nolan film he didn’t write, as it’s extremely straight-forward. No real ‘reveals’, no non-linear structure. Not a positive or negative, but in the context of his career it’s interesting to see what a movie is like when he’s a little handcuffed to someone else’s work. Unintentional tension occurs when you watch Pacino gearing up to jump a fence and start wondering how many cuts it’s gonna take. Much less than Liam Neeson, I tell you what.

Ironically, I felt quite sleepy during most of Insomnia. The great cast and direction weren’t enough to cover up the uninspired and relatively boring plot.

This is surely the Most Linear and Understandable Sir Christopher Nolan’s Film. A Crime/Thriller involving Al Pacino which keeps you indulged in it throughout it’s Runtime. Alaska’s Atmosphere, Scenic Routes, & Cinematography is also Good which also related to the Film’s Titles “Insomnia.” Even though it’s a Remake, It stills pull you into it’s ominous theme.

Fairly predictable plot however still enjoyable. Especially when I got to here Al Pacino say “You’re about as mysterious to me as a blocked toilet is to a fucking plumber”

first of all: don’t hate on it because nolan made it and it didn’t feel like him, it’s still great this was so thrilling and even tho this was something different from robin williams, his performance still didn’t disappoint. the performance overall was just great. the beginning reminded me a bit of twin peaks tho.

While this is not the most grand spectacle of a Christopher Nolan film (this being one of his early works), Insomnia meanwhile has more of a focus on its characters and story, with a captivating and unsettling vibe. Al Pacino’s LA detective comes to a remote town in Alaska, within the Arctic Circle, which experiences daylight 24 hours a day. This leads to him being deprived of sleep, his character changing and his patience depleting as he investigates the murder…

This was an interesting watch to say the least Almost the whole film I was not taken by this film I found the characters quite odd the story was not what I expected and the film did not have that Nolan feeling I’ve felt in the rest of his work Which I maybe should’ve suspected since this is a remake but anyway yeah it felt a bit more like a Blow Out situation where I’m a bit let down However…

non Nolany Nolan its better then I thought between 3.5 and 4 stars
-
S
Highly under-rated!
-
A
Goofy shit. I can see why this is interesting in outline, but the script needed at LEAST a couple more drafts. So much of this is people who should know better just being stupid, and the “insomnia” of it all is sold rather haphazardly till it takes over in the last 15 minutes. I wasn’t bored, but that’s the best I can say for this.

A very intense and thrilling murder mystery. Al Pacino perfectly plays a man slowly descending into madness which pairs really well with Christopher Nolan’s directing style,

H
There’s a real schizo element to saying I couldn’t see him in the fog, but the other thought I shot him on purpose when he saw me, so I might have. I think this might have been to make me question if will meant to kill happ, which I think the scene where he sees his body made me kinda feel that way? But I don’t think I bought that really. Also watched this in Alaska for the full feeling
-
S

This movie had good aspects. For example, both Pacino and Williams were really good and made the story much more memorable. Unfortunately, some of the directions this movie takes and specifically the way some events unfold are just completely ridiculous and are incredibly stupid and unrealistic. Not bad, but definitely not amazing.

Not a bad movie by any means, but it just had me falling asleep at a few parts (ironic I know.) I get what the movie was going for with the whole “don’t lose your way” theme though. Early on, Dormer says that once a killer gets a taste for murder he’ll keep doing it because there’s no going back. Dormer knows that because he had already crossed a line by tampering with evidence on a previous case, and after a big accident, he continues to tamper with even more evidence.

I’m torn because I did really want to like this movie. It has a solid premise; a skilled detective is trying to solve a murder in one of those places where it’s only ever daylight, so he’s sleep deprived. The big issue with Insomnia is that it doesn’t feel like the detective is ever sleep deprived. It feels like he should be losing his marbles by the end of the movie, but he’s calm, cool and collected. I do think…

KATHARINE ISABELLE! DON’T BE A COWARD NOLAN! PUT BOTH OF THESE WOMEN IN LEADING ROLES! Maybe when he finally does a real outright horror flick he can cast Isabelle…. I had seen this movie about 10 or 15 years ago and remember not being particularly enthused with the plot or pacing of the film. Upon rewatch I feel those pain points have cleared up and I can appreciate the film for what it is. It comes off as an expertly crafted thriller with excellent performances from two heavyweights in Pacino and Williams. Even Hillary swank, who I’m not usually a huge fan of, rose to the challenge. Good good good. You probably wouldn’t guess that this is a Chris Nolan film on first glance but on closer analysis it really does fit. The weird visuals, caused by the subversion of a characters normal state, in this case insomnia. The dramatic tension. Well staged action sequences. But sometimes flakey dialogue writing (I know he actually didn’t write this one I don’t care) THE FOG SCENE THOUGH. So well done, how they did that without it messing up due…

Was this a rewatch? I don’t know, It’s all kind of…foggy? 😉 Or did I loose some sleep over it? Anyway, no insomnia for me, although I wanted to see it to the end, which ended up being almost 1 in the night… Maybe a bigger showcase that Christopher Nolan knows how to direct. You notice a great filmmaker, usually, not in his big budget stuff were it’s “easy” to show off great vistas or stellar 😉 cinematography…but he can…

Remake of a norwegian film with Stellan Skarsgård This film is the Nolanfilm no one talks about, because there is nothing to talk about. Al Pacino is great, who would have guessed, Robin Williams is very unusual and the biggest selling point and Hilary Swank is there. The plot is sadly very predictable, Wally Pfisters shakycam during the actionscenes is pretty bad and time has almost no relevance. You just feel that Nolan did not write the script and that…

Probably the most anonymous movie Christopher Nolan’s ever made, it’s the only one he didn’t write and you can tell. This movie really made me want to visit Alaska. Nolan always has a way of highlighting his surroundings and getting the most beautiful shots. I loved the look of this movie as a whole. Pacino and Williams were insanely good. Pacino playing “being at his wit’s end” and “tired as hell” is incredible. The confidence and calmness of Williams’ performance was creepy. Also, was Robin in great shape? Jumping over logs, running through water tunnels, and sprinting in the fog…

A Christopher Nolan film from 2002, set in a small Alaskan town and concerning the murder of a high school girl. An experienced Los Angeles detective (Al Pacino) & his colleague are brought in to track down the killer, with the aid of the local police department and in particular, a young female officer (Hilary Swank) Due to the time of the year and very northern siting, there is continual 24 hour daylight and this is an added ingredient in the pitting of wits between the murder and the detective. The storyline is engrossing, the acting top class and visuals very good.

Great cast, great script, great locations, great cat-and-mouse game. I love and miss Robin Williams; his range was incredible and this is a great example from the end opposite his comedic roles that most people think of when he’s mentioned. Al Pacino was able to sell the visible deterioration of his character as he kept plodding on with no sleep so well and I liked the ambiguity it brought to some parts of the movie. Hilary Swank’s role was smaller…

A banger murder/thriller. Robin Williams and Al Pachino are absolutely on fire, especially Pachinos depiction of devolving into insomnia. The shootout scene felt a little contrived though.

3.75 We all know Nolan is great. Now I know he was always great. Nolan did an excellent job capturing that 90s crime thriller feel. Mixing both the mystery in with the moral dilemmas that have the audience questioning their own character. Pacino and Williams were excellent. Although seeing Williams in a villain role was quite interesting.

It’s not bad but it’s also just meh. If you want to watch Pacino as a detective, watch Heat. If you want to see Williams in a psychological thriller, watch One Hour Photo. 82/100 – This movie went past my bed time, but I was able to stay awake to stick with the theme of the movie. In all honesty though, this one kept me interested the whole way so it was easy to stay awake for it. Great acting all around, and the setting added a lot for me here too. Pacino’s downward spiral from lack of sleep and his conscience eating him alive was expertly portrayed. I’m honestly surprised this movie isn’t more talked about. Nolan is a goat.

I don’t know how it took me this long to finally see this, the one Christopher Nolan movie hadn’t seen till this point. What I was not expecting was such an apparent heavy influence he took visually from Twin Peaks. A very different kind of performance from both Pacino and Robin, definitely need to buy this one (as well as see the original Norwegian film.)

The last Nolan film I’d yet to see in a theatre. At least, I don’t think I saw this theatrically at the time. DVD probably. Beautiful on a 35mm print. Took my mom to see it. She knew of the film, but as it turned out she’d somehow never seen it before. She loved it, of course, ’cause it’s a great film movie. A real banger of a picture. Imagine if Hollywood was cranking out shit like this on a regular basis.
