One of the dumbest franchise sequels I’ve ever seen in my life, completely betraying the tone of the original films. I had a fucking blast with it. It really helps that Alien 3 single-handedly destroyed my investment in anything post-Aliens that happens in this universe. So sure, why not? i like that a series that always dealt in imagery of rape, pregnancy and motherhood finally starts working in abortion. i also like that Weaver (especially good here, an idiosyncratic and physical performance) and Ryder both play characters who to varying degrees hate what they are. a great deal of this movie doesn’t work at all (the Whedoniest stuff, the “Firefly” dry-run stuff, grates harder and harder with every repeat viewing), but it’s so ostentatiously weird that i often find myself simultaneously wincing and falling for it.

The craziest piece of trivia about this movie is that towards the end when Ripley jumps 14 feet to get into the hatch of the ship, Sigourney Weaver actually did jump 14 feet across a real spaceship hangar into a running spaceship, so when Ron Perlman looks really happy to see her in the next scene, that’s actually his real reaction to seeing her surviving that jump.

(Watched Special Edition) Well, it’s definitely better than Alien 3, but not by much. This stacked cast tries their hardest to elevate a Joss Whedon script, an almost impossible feat for any actor. Was very cool seeing Tuco from BrBa in this. The film had a bizarre premise, and I didn’t find the ending very satisfying to be honest, but there was still some stuff I liked! Jeunet’s direction seeps through the cracks now and again, the chestburster through the guys head was fucking AWESOME, underwater sequence built some great tension, and Ripley playing basketball is unintentionally hilarious.

I was cheering on the aliens. 5 minutes doesn’t goes by in this film without either misogyny (in words or actions) or objectification of women or both. Like women are only to be fucked, attacked, used or degraded. Unlike Alien 3, I genuinely forgot to log this. I actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I absolutely loved the practical effects and how creative some of the ideas were. It kinda reminded me of Men in Black sometimes. The writing was still somewhat poor though. It seems like they wanted to have a crew this time around that had a variety of quirks to compensate for the lack of depth. It’s good fun don’t get me wrong, just not something I can really praise it for.

I also thought some shots in the film looked bad, but that’s not the biggest issue. It had some cool ideas, it just failed to meet my expectations!

I wouldn’t say this is the best of the Alien series, but it is definitely the weirdest. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, fresh off The City of Lost Children, retains of that film’s dark sense of science fiction design and eye-catching imagery. Jeunet takes a pedestrian and uninspired Joss Whedon script and thankfully elevates it into something so idiosyncratic and lively that brings a big “what the fuck” factor, more and more as it goes on. A real surprise.

J’ai critiqué Fincher, mais bon, Jeunet n’a pas vraiment fait mieux. Juste, arrêtez la saga plutôt que de faire des suites aussi décevantes… J’ai vraiment pas capté l’idée derrière cette nouvelle créature. Je trouve ça sincèrement ridicule et ça dénature complètement l’univers d’*Alien*. Par contre, l’humour un peu décalé de Jeunet, ça, j’aime beaucoup. On dirait presque une comédie noire, c’est assez original. Il y a un peu de tension, mais toujours pas assez pour rivaliser avec le tout premier…

Alien 4 is probably my least favorite in the franchise… Ripley’s character is so different because of her Alien DNA, and while the atmosphere is darker, I didn’t feel much anxiety. I mostly felt sadness and empathy for the life that was taken away from her. The story is still really interesting, though.
