love this gritty, gay marie antoinette!!! i adore the sofia coppola version too, but farewell, my queen is a perfect antidote/companion. it ditches the head-in-the-clouds lavishness of coppola’s film and trades it for claustrophobic frenzy over the span of four dramatic days — which sometimes feel as if they unfold over real time. jacquot masterfully shows the air of formality starting to wear off in dire times but also the stubbornness and duty and pride of the people whose lives are being turned upside down. lea seydoux is one of my favorite cinematic presences and she’s so magnetic in every scene, playing the queen’s reader. she’s sharp, secretive, inquisitive, and charming. and it’s through her eyes we see the demise of…

I wish Coppola’s version had been gay. The production design and filming style was kind of understated and I really wish they had gone the extra mile to make it more overwhelmingly reminiscent of the era, but the story is pretty interesting and Diane Kruger is a seriously beautiful queen.

super odd movie, I didn’t dislike it but I have to give it 2 stars because I had absolutely no idea what the point of this movie was until the last fifteen minutes and that’s really not encouraging. I think it was trying to showcase the love triangle going on but imo sidonie’s romantic attraction for the queen was not strongly enough portrayed, and while watching I was unsure if I was supposed to be reading it beyond just servitude…

ANCIENT IN AUGUST DAY 6 More on the order of something like Downfall than something like Marie Antoinette. It captured the sort of everything falling apart nature of the thing well.

beyond the one flaw (the fictionalization of a single aspect that really is blown out of proportion) it’s a fantastic portrayal of the events following the storming of the bastille, viewed from the ground up. tense and immersive, certain dramatizations are easily forgiven for the strength of its vision. i haven’t read the source, the novel, but from what i’ve read of it the film seems a great improvement upon it.

lea seydoux, the set, and costumes are gorgeous! the 1700s were arguably more gay than what was going on here but i’ll take what i can get.

The time leading up to the French Revolution through the eyes of the Marie Antoinette’s loyal commoner reader played by Lea Seydoux is a typically lavish costume drama from Benoit Jacquot. Not really concerned with the political issues of the time, the film still stays well clear of devolving into melodrama and instead delivers a strong character piece. Both Seydoux and Diane Kruger (Antoinette) deliver strong performances at the heart of the piece as the woman who would be nobody and the queen both see their lives come to abrupt changes.

Really? Sidonie projects in Marie Antoinette the illusion of a deep connection. However, the queen lives in a bubble of futility and self-centredness. 🙄

An effective enough look at the inside of Versailles following the storming of the Bastille, and the crumbling of the monarchy. Kirsten Dunst’s performance in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is so iconic at this point that it’s almost strange to see someone else in the role. Diane Kruger sells it well enough as a more mature Marie, and I appreciate the complexity she brought here along with the queer reading of her relationship with Gabrielle. I have an aversion to…

The script is pretty accurate towards the events even if the relationship isn’t. Stunning cinematography. “Let them eat cake” acts as a double entendre here.

A commanding, transitional performance by Seydoux, some work-of-art tableaux, but at times it does play like Jacquot’s well-dressed wet dream

a mix of queer baiting and male gaze. i thought I would enjoy it because of the cast (especially for Léa Seydoux and Diane Kruger) but I’m really disappointed. the acting is ass, the relationship between Gabrielle and Marie was so off and very VERY underwhelming. There’s not that much of tension throughout the movie between Marie and Sidonie ? and even with Gabrielle. The whole movie is OFF. it wasn’t “realistic” enough and I really felt that a man…
