“russia is a great land, but there is nowhere to retreat – moscow is behind us!” every frame reminded me of the winter landscapes of camille pissarro or pieter bruegel, that same quiet poetry in snow and human stillness. the music is incredible too. the ending especially struck me: it echoes the finale of andrei rublev, where the black and white film bursts into color with rublev’s icons. here, it’s the reverse, the film returns to black and white, closing with a monument to the survivors, another reflection on art, memory, and endurance

Panfilov’s Twenty Eight (2016) is a Russian War Film based on an event that happened on the Eastern Front during WW2. As with most of these David vs. Goliath stories (many are referenced in the film), you know there is going to be a lot of death, destruction and acts of heroism. Doesn’t matter what army you fought for, everyone involved has a valid story to tell. Excellent dialogue among doomed soldiers. The CGI mixed in with models of the German tanks was surprisingly flawless and damn the explosions were fierce. Another example why the Europeans make the best war films, they lived it and know how to tell it. F ‘O’ M 8/10

Crowdfunded into existence and after doing some research the story itself is a total myth. Ironically the soldiers talk about the Greeks and their heroics against the Persians early on. Much like the Greeks (see 300) its all exaggerated propaganda. With that said it served a purpose and you can’t argue with the results. As for the movie, there were some moments and I definitely appreciated the shot-on-location feel over the CGI-fest thats far too popular these days. If your interests in the genre go farther than just the blockbusters, I’d give it a go.

This was a really well made World War 2 film from Russia. You really only hear about the Russians when you hear about the Red Army so it was cool to see what the Kazakhs were up to also. The battle scenes were very stressful and well shot, and there were times where I felt like I was part of the action too. I know the story of Panfilov’s 28 Men was an urban legend but it doesn’t make this any less of a great film. A definite recommend if you’re interested in the Eastern Front, or just WW2 in general. Only reason I didn’t give this a 5 is because there was this part where one of the characters casually explains the plot of Seven Samurai even though that movie didn’t exist back then, and I have no idea why they decided to have that in the movie.

Essentially Russian WW2 300, just without the comic stylization. The Spartans are even mentioned, just in case you didn’t get the similarities. If you watch knowing this is action movie mythologizing of propaganda, what’s left is a well-directed, impressively slick war actioner. Panfilov’s 28 takes some time for the siege to begin, but once it does, directors Druzhinin and Shalopa do a stellar job at blending sets, pyrotechnics, practical effects, scale miniatures, and CGI to deliver intense chaotic set-pieces. Repetitive in the sense of being limited to trenches and tanks, but well-paced, immersive, and with no shortage of menacing steel hordes.

“That’s what they call folktales, boys. Only yours doesn’t add up.” A literal lie perpetrated and paid for by both the Russian & Kazakhstani Ministries of Culture, as well as Gaijin Entertainment (lmao??), that is beyond cringe-worthy, but also surprisingly well shot. It’s 104 minutes of chauvinistic, jingoistic, messaging with a few quips and the thunderous roars of war thrown into the mix to spice it up. Ivan Dobrobabin shouldn’t of been allowed back in the USSR, nor should he be…

A bad film, but notable for several reasons. Firstly, it challenges the common idea that modern Russian patriotic blockbuster cinema is purely a state-sanctioned, top-down affair. After being denied state funding, the filmmakers launched a crowdfunding campaign and secured the backing of over 30,000 people. The film was partially finished when then-Minister of Culture, Vladimir Medinsky, became involved, securing the rest of the funding and becoming a vocal proponent of the film. A striking example of the synergy between filmmakers,…

Disgrace. Total fail and disgrace.🙏 First — tanks have no crosses, no idea whose side they’re on. Second — both Germans and our guys make zero noise when shot. No screams, just drop dead. Third — zero feeling that this battle is real or scary. The acting is ‘amazing’ btw. And the dialogue? Full of modern words Soviet people never said.👎 The visuals carry it, but even those are ugly and stupid.👎 Watch it if you don’t care about movies or war.🤏

1941, Nov 14-16 A small detachment of Soviet infantry face-off against a German armored column on the outskirts of Moscow. Not your generic modern Russian flag-waver. Just a simple, no nonsense action movie. Only knock on it is that the Germans are just faceless zombies. Interesting note is that models were used for the tanks, rather than CGI. Movie has a little hat tip to ‘The Seven Samurai’ (1954). Story is based on a legend surrounding the Soviet Army’s 316th Rifle Division. (229) For more WW2 movies placed in a historical context see list ‘WWII Films in Chronological Order – TgL’ here.

It’s one thing to have your film knowingly wink at the audience to highlight your story’s David versus Goliath-esque parallels by having characters speaking of Greek legend and the Spartans, but it’s another thing entirely to have Russian soldiers in 1941 clearly and unambiguously describing the plot of Seven Samurai (1954) and The Magnificent Seven (1960). Pretty solidly made war flick otherwise though.

Interesting little bit of WWII schlock here. Funded by the War Thunder devs. Goes between being coy about the fact that the Panfilov legend was confirmed shortly after the end of the war to be made up and pandering to the insistence, even by modern Russian politicians, that saying that is bad. Too much exposition until the siege starts and the subtitles were made by some guy with Google Translate and are not good. But otherwise competently made and far from the worst of these Russian B-movies about the eastern front.

As far as cinematics go it’s okay, but directing not so much. Too many speeches and tough-talk about saving the motherland, kicking the Germans and saving the world, and too little reality. The Germans are painted out to be weak, while the fact is in 1941 they were stronger than ever. But then again Russians never had a problem rewriting history, which in my opinion is a disgrace of the millions of men who sacrificed their lives in the real battles. It’s a shame, honestly

a good film, solid acting and handling of weapons and grenades/molotovs. however several inaccuracies with the anti tank rifles. the tanks were well made and used. the action had steady pacing and felt very realistic. little details like the radio wire getting cut by combat, and the tanks burying men alive by X crossing over trenches was a nice touch.

good tight battle movie. nice attention to detail, historical actuality notwithstanding. although I cannot believe they dug trenches like that in cold ground. liked the sense of dread they were able to impart through the nazi tanks, no cartoonish villainy. great detail was the crosshatched imprint of the butterfly trigger on his thumb

Better than most 2000s Russian WWII movies but it isn’t a terribly high bar. Several plot points never really resolve and the climax of the movie is 30 min of the same scene over and over again.

Despite a slow start, Panfilov’s 28 Men has some good action scenes. Narrow in scope, the film focuses on a single battle on the road to Moscow in the Second World War. The majority of the film takes places in trenches, and it mostly consists of prolonged combat sequences. This is a very combat-focused film, and little room is given over to complex characterisation or inter-personal drama. And, to be honest, it is well-choreographed. This is clearly a film made with…

honestly just a whole lot of shooting… there’s action but no excitement, which makes the movie pretty dull. interesting to see how Russia remembers & depicts “The Great Patriotic War” in memory though; the individual heroism, sacrificing for the greater good, how scores of germans fall and fall, triumphing against all odds, etc.
-
A
Totalmente infravalorada.

My bro Adam found the steelbook of this at the Euroshop for 1€ and bought it cuz it was advertised as a Warthunder movie and we have a homie (Simon) who has over 3000 hours in Warthunder and drives tanks in real life. So we invited him and watched this today. Essentially it’s a Russian war propaganda movie with forgettable characters and has all the classic war movie tropes but it’s surprisingly entertaining and looks and sounds really good and realistic. Is it worth a watch? No not for most people but Simon enjoyed it 🙂

The first 45 minutes of the film are heroic and at the same time meaningless, like chewing gum and nothing actually happens except dialogue and stupid sayings. True story of a few Russians who fought off the Nazis saving Moscow. Great battle scenes. Constant action. The ending shows a really cool memorial that was created for them. Really an amazing story of proud people defending their country. This film honors them well.

The first half an hour is just stodgy Russian “banter” and mounds and mounds of exposition. Then, 38 minutes in, just when I was thinking it was going to be a talky musing on the horrors of war, COME AND SEE ‘lite’ style, it booted right off into a big, bombastic “few against many” strategic battle actioner. And became immensely more enjoyable for it.

Decent film. Very realistic and gripping for viewer. However, it is so biased. Soviets look invincible with little faults and the Wehrmacht appear imbecilic and lacking in tech – when as we know, the Germans were superior in gear and tactics until the final stages of O. If you want to know what a real Russian blood is then this film is for you. No wonder why the Nazi cunts can’t withstand their bravery. Mother fucking Nazis fought for a shitty ideology but these real men fought with soul to protect their motherland and stood for humanity. For “Panfilov’s 28 Men,” funding was raised…

good russian ww2 movie that isnt propoganda-y, liked that it didnt try to do too much by focusing on the big picture. kept the scope relatively small.

Mostly forgettable. Longwinded start, then lots of shooting. Meh. But has some nice shots of winter landscapes.

When it comes to modern day Russian films on WWII, this wasn’t even that bad.

Serviceable, despite having no real characters or meaningful dialogue. Just a cool premise and nice visuals. The end credits with all the crowdfunders are absolutely bonkers.

A fairly well made war film that is based on the myth of Panfilov’s Twenty-Eight Guardsmen that turned out to be an invention of Soviet propaganda. There’s probably a more interesting film to be made about the Russian propaganda machine during WWII than making a film like this that attempts to take back control of the story. A small group of Russian soldiers defend the last line before Moscow, defeating endless waves of Germans and tanks, who are portrayed as…

If US intelligence analysts had watched this, they’d of known the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a certainty. This is Putin’s vision. The dialogue consists solely of deranged patriotic pronouncements. And the finale features massive Social Realist closeups of Social Realists statues erected postwar for the fallen heroes. The last shot shows the brave comrades framed against the sky, awaiting invaders. It’s pure fascist art, but irony sure has a way of being ironic… Every plot point of plucky determined…

I think the main problem was how they kept talking about religion, specifically Christianity. This is grossly inaccurate as the USSR had a history of persecuting religion and this movie overlooks that for the purposes of making Russia and Kazakhstan look good in the eyes of the west. Specifically from 1928-41 they had a prominent anti religious campaign and so talking to a political commisar of the red army about god would be a terrible idea as it would not end well for you. The events of the film are also a highly contested historical event.

I watched the dub DVD titled “Thunde of War” which uses the title screen from the game “War Thunder”. From there it’s a bit of a drag to the battle. The battle itself takes up a majority of the runtime. The first half hour or so should’ve been trimmed down. The actual also kind of drags as there’s not much variety in the action, and it’s a bit hard to tell when people die. Overall, it looks nice, just feels too slow for it’s own good. Personal rating – 5/10 Critical rating – 5/10

Another excellent Russian WWII flick. An extended gritty battle sequence fighting tanks up close and exploiting their weaknesses. Apparently this is a fabrication, but the Russians DID halt the Nazis before they could reach Moscow so I can forgive the propaganda.

A perfectly fine action film that delivers in thrills, even if its historicity is incredibly dubious.

- Synopsis
- USSR, November, 1941. Based on the account by Vasiliy Koroteev this is the story of Panifilov's Twenty-Eight, a group of twenty-eight Red Army soldiers commanded by General Ivan Panfilov, that stopped the advance on Moscow of a column of fifty-four Nazi tanks of the 11th Panzer Division for several days. Though lightly armed they fight tirelessly and defiantly, with uncommon bravery and unwavering dedication, to protect Moscow and their Motherland.
