It is not surprising that so many people identify closely with Boyhood. It hits all the hallmarks of growing up. There is the promise made years ago that the parent forgot but the child did not. There is the incessant fighting between siblings that is forgotten two minutes later, as well as the faking of who is to blame for the fight when the shouts of “MOM!” have been acknowledged. There is the change in address, school and friends, for which parents are always blamed and children’s protests are always ignored. There is the period where children discover that they can exert some control by dressing how they like or coming in late, anything that can be taken as a…

After finishing Boyhood and slowly gathering my thoughts on it I did what I usually do, fly over to Letterboxd to jot those thoughts down before they escape me. What I wasn’t prepared for was what happened when I saw that poster. It was a slap in the face, a jarring reminder that I had just spent twelve years with someone. I think it’s easy to not look beyond this film’s ambitious conception and even write it off as a non-eventful gimmick. There is no real plot, there are no grand character arcs, no dramatic tension. It lacks a narrative flow and has more scope than focus, it ambles on throughout its running time, meandering along the trivial and occasionally…

Two things I wanna say about that that I haven’t seen in any reviews: 1- The scene where they’re talking about fucking and throwing sawblades at a wall is so true to how absolutely scummy 13-15 year old boys trying to impress each other can be that I thought I was going to throw up. 2- It is legitimately so funny that he grows up to be a shitty goatee guy who does mushrooms and says shit like “we’re all passengers on this crazy ride I like to call life”

A miserable experience that thinks it’s way more profound than it actually is. It has nothing to say and its only value as a film comes from the novelty of its gimmick. Watch Lady Bird or The Florida Project instead.

In today’s time where most films treat time as an administrative tool, A mechanism to move a protagonist from point A to point B across a structured set of dramatic epiphanies. Narrative cinema conditions us to expect milestones: the devastating tragedy, the transformative triumph, the singular moment where childhood dies and adulthood officially begins. Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is a quiet, radical rejection of that cinematic lie. Shot across twelve actual years with the same cast, the film operates not on…

“It’s like when they realised it was gonna be too expensive to actually build cyborgs and robots. I mean, the costs of that were impossible. They decided to just let humans turn themselves into robots. That’s what’s going on right now. I mean, why not? They’re billions of us just laying around, not really doing anything. We don’t cost anything. We’re even pretty good at self-maintenance and reproducing constantly. And as it turns out, we’re already biologically programmed for our…

i mean like it’s cool cuz it’s an actual kid growing up done in its own time, but at the same time it’s just some random kid growing up. Nothing particularly interesting happens besides the mom’s story, matter of fact if the movie was about her this would be a much more interesting movie about mortality and seeing the years slip past you. What i think hurts this movie the most is that the main kid is really not at…

❤️‍🩹 tqm, Linklater.

This film felt real. I love how they avoided character arc and just focused on the simple but complex topic of growing up. All characters have done wrong and all characters have done right, which makes it impossible to have a single person to hate. I believe that using the same cast throughout makes this film even more realistic and calmly hard-hitting. There are so many scenes where all you can do is sit and think…well, that’s life. Also, thank you for letting me hear “Somebody That I Used to Know”—what a banger.

This film is just too like too fucking underrated fym they shot this in 12 years like it’s just soo natural and real. I really feel like i’m a part of mason’s journey now. And it like pulls you in because it’s just you and the life we all live in plus it is literally watching someone grow for 3 three hours straight i love this. i wish it was mentioned more.

Richard “King of Vibes” Linklater directs my childhood?! I’m always pro-Linklater films as they often are more hangout movies than plot-driven, but in this case, I felt a bit bored in the 2nd half of the film. I guess you can say that’s the point, that life is mostly boring, but I felt like the storytelling could have been more engaging. But the little character moments did win me over The dynamic between Mason and Sam was sweet (thank god no major sibling drama) and Ethan Hawke plays such a great father!

End of Summer Masterpiece. Summer goes too fast, but life goes even faster. So tough to name an MVP. Lorelei Linklater steals the first chunk of the movie, a total ham sandwich, and then aces the disaffected college older sister. It’s so clear she and Mason really care for each other and have become a team through the divorces and the second marriages. Ellar Coltrane really grows into himself, it’s incredible to watch. How lucky he is to have this…

Approaching the film’s close, Patricia Arquette’s character rattles through her life as a series of milestones and despairs as she “thought that there would be more.” Notably, none of the events she lists occur on screen – we spend the best part of three hours viewing other pivotal and transitory moments from the twelve years framing Mason’s childhood. It’s scary to watch a life condensed into a single medium. But it’s comforting too, as it demonstrates that all the joys…

Man. This one conjures up some serious emotions. I hadn’t seen it since it came out 12 years ago (the amount of time they took to film this movie), and I was worried that the production of it would feel like a gimmick for a movie that isn’t as brilliant as I once thought. But I was gladly very wrong. In classic Linklater style, nothing really happens in this movie. You follow a boy’s life as he grows up and…

First time seeing Boyhood and what an experience seeing it for its 12th anniversary screening(in symmetry to the 12 years of filming) followed by a q&a with Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. The movie was an organic way to capture growing up in turn of the century/early 2000/ America as a boy. I was impressed by how engaged I felt regardless of how nothing particularly groundbreaking was happening in the plot. Also, unknowingly sat next to John Sloss, producer of…

When I die, I hope to find myself in a cinema surrounded by all my loved ones. And I hope to be shown the movie of my life, pieced together the way Boyhood pieces together a life. That is what I hope will happen when I die. 12th Anniversary screening w/ Q&A at IFC Center

Very impressive! My upbringing was nothing like Mason’s… and yet our coming of age arcs were shockingly similar… the millenial emo to artsy hipster pipeline knows no geographical or socioeconomic bounds I guess! Teetering between thinking the concept is a little cooler than the final product… but I don’t know, it just felt so relatable and spot on, and Linklater’s films emotional intelligence is very high
