First of all, anybody who criticizes this film for not being “accurate” is not making a valid point, because how could one create a 100% accurate 2+ hour adaptation of a story as minimal as Noah’s fraction of Genesis? As Aronofsky has said, “The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis.” And I completely agree with him… Noah is, above all else, a fantasy film with biblical inspiration. But as for the movie…

My favorite part of the Bible was when the giant rock people appeared to help Noah build his ark. And the part where he tried to kill his family because the crazy invisible sky man told him to? Classic.

aka Russell Crowe’s Vegemite Tales. when it rains, it bores. the most refreshingly strange $150+ million movie since Hugo, but Aronofsky’s bombast has never been so dull. more than any of his previous films, NOAH exposes his fundamental weaknesses as a filmmaker… his affinity for bombast at all times, often at the expense of interesting drama. the rock monster angels and other assorted silliness is amusing enough, but to what end? ultimately a banal and unprovocative telling of – ugh – yet *another* origin story… and weighed down by convention of all things, especially in the godawful Ray Winstone character who brings absolutely zero to the narrative or the dynamic between Noah and his sons. Clint Mansell has never been…

Rather than delivering a straightforward adaptation of the famous Biblical tale that would appease most ultra-religious purists, Aronofsky has crafted a madly audacious and awe-inspiring hybrid of a dark psychological thriller, a gritty family melodrama on steroids, a fantastical sci-fi disaster epic, an environmental cautionary tale and a challenging philosophical parable that poses deep, timeless questions with its themes of morality and sin, faith and hope, revenge and forgiveness. A work of wild ambition, striking artistry and dramatic intensity, Noah intertwines genres and defies expectations with its unconventional storytelling, creative liberties, spectacular visuals and transcendent music score, infusing the grand scope of the flood myth with a deeply intimate and absorbing character study, firmly anchored by Crowe’s heartbreaking performance and Aronofsky’s fearless direction.

That story about the 600-year-old man single-handedly building a 450-ft long, 75-ft wide, and 45-ft high watertight boat on which he fit two of every living creature on the planet (except dinosaurs) that survived bunking with predators as well as removal from their natural ecosystem – with enough food to last 370 days as they awaited worldwide flood waters to recede because an invisible and all-powerful creator was upset that his perfect creation became imperfect by eating fruit which enabled them to commit acts of violence and evil, and thus, in an act to demonstrate his benevolence, decided to drown humanity in an attempt to eliminate evil (as that was the only thing he could have done despite having control over the universe and all that happens within it; or because he was such a fan of Ziusudra) only to repopulate the world through generations of one family’s incest was making perfect sense … until the rock monsters showed up.

The arresting fashion in which Darren Aronofsky injects profundity into a predominantly superficial genre may be the most impressive accomplishment of the resplendent and epic Noah. Aronofsky, a filmmaker with the incessant purpose to innovate and redefine, puts forth one of his most divergent motion pictures but simultaneously one of his most mainstream with this re-imagining of Noah’s ark. A true blockbuster on the surface, the sweeping temperament of Noah is uncommonly matched with intelligence and a bonafide, gravitating narrative that elevates this latest Aronofsky venture from a grand blockbuster into a visceral and provocative experience. Preternatural is a word that fundamentally encompasses the lasting impression Noah leaves on the viewer. It’s fantastical in its depiction of a world before…

Darren Aronofsky’s debut feature was about a mathematician obsessed with numbers & patterns. Requiem for a Dream was about the lives of 4 individuals heavily addicted to drugs. The Fountain was a 1000-year odyssey of a man obsessively trying to save the woman he loves. The Wrestler was about a well-past-his-prime wrestler obsessed with his earlier glory within that square ring. And Black Swan was about a ballerina obsessed with perfection. In every single one of these stories, the characters’ obsessions lead them to only one path; the path to self-destruction. But Noah presents Aronofsky’s own obsession with the tale of Noah’s Ark which he had been wanting to bring on the silver screen for years & in quite an ironic but…

I will never understand what the hell made Darren Aronofsky make this piece of shit, but it’s probably for the best that he stretch out his films a little longer because nobody asked for a 138 biblical epic with Russell Crowe as a king-fu Noah. Jennifer Connelly is wasted in this, Anthony Hopkins is wasted in this, Emma Watson probably fired her agent after this, and there even a Logan Lerman sighting. Ray Winstone? How did you get roped into…

When I saw Darren Aronofsky had made a Biblical epic adaptation of the story of Noah’s Ark I found it strange that a guy who’s bread and butter was more in the psychological would make a film not only of that scale but also on what is a relatively simple story, and it’s long runtime didn’t peak my interest, so I put off viewing it for a while. Finally got around to watching it and strange to say I know…

Why did my uncle think this was a movie to take a 12 year old (my brother), an 11 year old (me) and an 8 year old (my cousin) to? I have no idea. Male bravado, just so he could say he “educated” his young ones with a Bible inspired spectacle, I guess. The daugher giving birth on the boat, the baby being a girl and Noah being disappointed by it was the only thing I distinctly remember from then. I might have misremembered it, though. It was… eh. For an 11 year old, who knows what I’d think of it now.

En tiedä, mikä kaikki mulla on mennyt ohi koulun uskonnontunneilla, mutta en muista koskaan kuulleeni maagisista kivimonstereista, jotka Raamatun kertomuksissa suojelevat luomakuntaa. Tässä sellaisia kuitenkin on. Tavallaan pidin näistä sympaattisista ja Guardians of The Galaxyn Grootin mieleen tuovista kivijättiläisistä. Mutta tosi oudoksi tämä on vedetty. Paljon outoja maagisia aineita, esineitä ja hahmoja. Aronofsky…

Not as bad as you’d think, once you ignore all the awkward, unspoken family tree weirdness. Visually meh like waterworld does Monty python, whilst Russell Crowe calls in from the set of gladiator. Emma Watson is surprisingly good in this – because she doesn’t just have to scowl and say ‘oh Harry, you idiot’ and is genuinely the emotional heart of the film. Unfortunately that all gets a bit lost in the biblical melodrama.

I finally found some genuine VULGAR AUTEURISM. Over the years, I’ve seen a certain subset of filmbro Twitter make the case for Michael Bay, Paul W.S. Anderson, and more, but this is the first time my conditions for that term have been met. Let’s define our terms. “Vulgar auterism”, to me, is the attempt of a director to blend the mass entertainment model of CGI-driven modern blockbusters that took shape in the wake of the Phantom Menace with High Culture…

Pretty sick. Rock-giants in battle; Noah driven mad and to the brink of double infanticide by his zealotry. Super freaked out take on this material from Darren, and much if it is pure invention I learned. Courageous from him. One thing he didn’t add, and which isn’t depicted but is a necessary consequence of the story’s events, is that we were all begat by Noah’s family all cracking each other in different configurations. Interesting. Also interesting is the movie’s explicit focus on vegetarianism versus the monstrosity of carnivorousness. Sort of an upscaled version of The Apple that so many of us bite daily.

I get why most people don’t like this it’s too on the nose and sometimes feels arbitrary. Still, it was an interesting watch. I just wanted a more cynical approach to the story, where the theology becomes morally grey and faith itself feels more ambiguous.tone was nice btw.

Darren Aronofsky aims for a serious, heavy, “important” biblical epic, but what comes out is a tonal mess that never decides what it wants to be. It’s pompous, confused, and gets lost in symbolism that goes nowhere. The only truly memorable thing here is Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson: both gorgeous, both solid, both doing their best while stuck in roles written more to serve the plot than to give them anything meaningful to play. Russell Crowe does what he…
