alex garland has made three movies about women in a row and i can’t help but find it weird that his entire conception of womanhood is just about being abused and traumatized. annihilation pivots on a scene where a character lists the various traumatic histories of each of the five leads. in this film, jessie buckley’s harper isn’t even a character at all. her entire persona comes through implication, the idea that we’re supposed to side with her because of the sexist microaggressions she’s subjected to rather than understanding her as a person (plus an underbaked grief-and-trauma angle that just comes packaged with this kind of arthouse horror now). a discourse-ready screenplay that’s so desperate to be interpreted that it…

I hate BODY HORROR like ew just ew! BUT I love Jessie Buckley more 💋 Plus I thought the message of this film was genuinely relatable because truthfully in my head… all misogynistic men do blend together for me too. But jeez louise I HATED the disturbing body visuals 🤢

A disaster as a movie about the dangers of men that women have to navigate, still a disaster as a movie about men’s neuroticism around their self concept as it relates to women…but kind of a cool disaster? Most of the time, Harper’s total lack of interiority or personality is borderline enraging, but once it shifts to the perspective of the man-entity, its preoccupations become a little clearer, a little sadder, and quite a bit less obvious, I think, than people seem to be giving it credit for. Mostly I found myself getting really excited about the gross shit we’re gonna see in Elden Ring.

The message is clear enough- toxic masculinity is constantly rebirthing itself. Its almost a bit too clear. I guess that raises a question of maybe it has to be? I dont know But i liked alot of the stylistic choices made in this. I loved the third act body horror too! Like nothing id seen before. But most other aspects aside from visuals are clunky and far too confident in a way. But alas me and Alex Garland havent got on with anything he has directed after Ex Machina

NAAAAAAAA WHAT. No, because like what was that, I thought it would be so different, but that was just so weird. Like throughout the movie it was fine but especially the end was just disgusting, gross, odd everything, ugh like I can’t even explain it. I know the category is horror, but if I was rating it on horror, it would probably be a 2. 5 since I don’t think it is that scary, but it scared me for some…

A film so reliant on symbolism and implication that it ultimately holds next to no emotional weight. Still pretty fun to watch and write stuff down about; a great essay movie.

Few filmmakers are as adept as Alex Garland at laying bare the human psyche within the confines of a specific genre. While the London-born director had previously delighted us with science fiction, *Men* travels the dark path of an unsettling, anxiety-inducing horror film—one carrying a social message so potent that it clashes sharply with its sanitized, crowd-pleasing competition. *Men* transports us to a dreamlike, saturated moorland where the protagonist appears to be the only figure lacking in vibrancy. She is…

I had heard about this when it came out but put off watching it until last night. I think I’ve liked everything I’ve seen by Alex Garland… and Jessie Buckley is a local girl! We are from the same county in Ireland. Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear are both very good in this. I liked the idea of the same actor playing different manifestations of toxic masculinity. The priest, the police officer, the landlord ect. can all become the face…

I watched this a year or two ago and it’s come back into my mind, asking to be rewatched. I actually don’t remember a rating I’d have given it at the time of watching, maybe only 3 or 3.5. Certainly I recall the performances being outstanding, especially the co-star Rory Kinnear’s depiction of 3 characters. Hah, I was curious to be reminded what it’s failings might be so I looked at wikipedia, and do recall it being a bit try-hard…

Men is my personal favorite from Alex Garland, a brilliant director whose unique perspective and visual storytelling I absolutely adore. Here, he tackles themes of violence, guilt, grief, and redemption, using a heavy metaphorical language that slithers into the viewer like a snake. Blending folk horror and body horror, it resurrects old legends through symbolism and rituals. I love how the story is told—even if you don’t possess every single key to the director’s metaphors, you still fully understand and…

2026 MOVIE #253 Yeah that was um.. interesting. On a technical level it’s quite great. The cinematography and use of unsettling songs and sounds are done really well. The tension was building and my skin began to crawl. Jessie Buckley was really solid as the lead. I liked how Rory Kinnear played nearly every male role in this. He was very creepy. The deep fake of his face on the child didn’t really work though. Maybe a little pretentious, but I thought it was pretty good still. That final scene is one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen. (Watched on Stan)

Uma crítica bem pejorativa e abusiva contra a mulher, maquiado de conceitualismo e cinematográfia Filme que a certo momento fica desconfortável, insalubre de assistir, e direção comandada por um homem, tentando ditar sobre a mulher E falhando miseravelmente na crítica que cai sobre o próprio. there is only one thing worse than a man. another man on a real though this is a lazy critique on toxic masculinity and also garland’s sole representation of being a woman is “trauma” from all of his media i’ve so far watched which is also lazy as frick (i have yet to see ex machina before anyone comes for me). that aside some of the filming was cool and i do still always give a star to a shit film just for highlighting how dangerous ordinary men often are (although there was a lack of real consequences).

Can’t very well unwatch that ending can I? I am extremely curious if Jessie Buckley was given concept art or a mockup of THAT prior to filming the scene or if Alex Garland had to just describe to her what would be happening so she could react to it. Either way is very funny

REWATCH: This rewatch reminded me just how weird Men really is. The slow-burn atmosphere, gorgeous countryside setting and constant feeling that something is deeply wrong work incredibly well. Jessie Buckley is fantastic, and Rory Kinnear deserves credit for committing fully to the film’s increasingly bizarre direction. The ending is still absolutely bonkers, but somehow it fits the film perfectly. Uneven and heavy-handed at times, but definitely the kind of horror that stays in your head.

L
A horror film with obvious and unmistakable social undertones, particularly concerning gender-based violence. I don’t usually appreciate films where the social message overwhelms the movie itself, but in this case, I didn’t feel that way. I enjoyed the performances, with the horror being concentrated mainly in the final few minutes.

The pacing isn’t great at first. It’s slow, unfocused, and gets a little boring, but it eventually picks up and the story becomes more interesting. Still, I don’t think it ever reaches its full potential, and in the end, it remains a pretty average movie.

Good for a slow-paced artsy film. It still gave you a chance to get to know the character + it had a story, while showing lots of artsy/cool shots. Type of film to make you ask “did bro just split his hand in half?” Kudos to Harper for arming herself and doing the needful, but she really should’ve seen them off with a few extra stabs. She also 100% shouldn’t have stopped the car just because she ran over Geoffrey,…

Amazing cinematography and beautiful body horror however the themes and symbolism are a bit all over the place making it challenging for the audience to pick up on everything the film is trying to say. The direct imagery in comparison to the more or less blunt subject matter is a bit too stark.

Good until it got super shit and pretentious. A film I like to put on to either disgust people, make them hate me, or appeal to my feminist English teacher. Genuinely Alex Garland fucked up on this probably shouldn’t be writing about experiencing patriarchy as a man. Anyway bit shit kinda good at times and really fucking disgusting and tries way to hard to mean something and appeal to some lady Alex was probably trying to impress and she probably was put out and never talked to him again. I’m not quite sure what the hell I just watched. There’s messaging around like men following the same paths of misogyny and hatred that can only blame women and create more pain. But like it also feels quite all over the place and unsure what message it really wants. Like it’s not bad but it felt like mostly vibes more than anything else. It was dramatic and intense and scary but also unable to stick the landing. I feel like I need to watch again with some distance.

I feel like I had a good time with this one because of how bizarro it was, but not sure it was meant to illicit a reaction of laughter from me at times?? Men is so well shot. It’s full of beautiful imagery that’s a joy to look at. The tension builds up nicely as our protagonist realizes just how much danger she’s in. I totally get why a movie that explores the horrors of being a woman in a story exclusively filled with men who share the same face and want to control, gaslight,…

For the first hour of this film I was interested in the plot, then that final act hits and I feel as if I wasted my time. I understand what this film is saying about grief and toxic masculinity, but I think the execution of those themes is very poor. The final scene feels so unnecessary, it comes across as just body horror for the sake of body horror it really doesn’t play a part in moving the story on. Overall there is some great shots sprinkled in throughout this film but the second half of the plot really negatively affects the whole film.

A strange, uncomfortable folk horror film about grief, trauma, toxic masculinity, and the way fear can repeat itself. Alex Garland goes much harder on symbolism than on conventional storytelling. What works: Jessie Buckley is fantastic and carries the entire film. The countryside setting is beautiful but deeply unsettling. The sound design and cinematography create a great sense of dread. Rory Kinnear’s performance is genuinely bizarre and memorable. The final sequence is absolutely insane. What doesn’t: The symbolism is very heavy-handed.…

- Synopsis
- In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to find a place to heal. But someone — or something — from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her, and what begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears.
