This movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the genre: mindless fluff with adolescent jokes, nudity, and lots of gross-out stuff. It is, however, unapologetic about it, and invests a lot to carry things to the extreme, which is what gives it its charm. it’s all vomit-inducing pranks, beautiful young girls flashing their tits, and hilarious one-liners galore peppered by a huge dose of stereotypes. And one thing that’s for certain, is that this movie wouldn’t have been nearly as good if it wasn’t for Ryan Reynolds.

Cinematic Time Capsule 2002 Marathon – Film #45 ”Crazy kids with their crazy VDs.” Rude, crude, ugly and gross… which is I guess is exactly what it wanted to be. However, it also reminded me of how much I like Mint Royale’s ‘Show Me’, and points for including ‘The Breakfast Club’s’ Vice Principal Vernon. Which just makes me want to shout: “What was in the éclair, Claire?” C’mon… “Answer the question, Claire!” Cinematic Time Capsule – 2002 Ranked

This movie is the absolute worst representation of early to mid 2000s teen/college comedies. It is embarrassingly bad.

All the fun but lewd, offensive, and crude comedy of National Lampoon’s ‘Animal House’ … all packed into one very charming guy who can throw a hell of a party. “Where can I find Van Wilder? … In the Guinness Book of World-fucking-Records, man… under ‘Raddest Fucking Dude Alive!’ Van Wilder was my getting hyped for college movie, and I remember watching it on repeat throughout my Senior year of High School. All these years later it is awesome to see how Ryan Reynolds is still able to pull off playing that same character. Now it feels a little awkward saying how much I used to love this movie, with how within the first few minutes it has already been…

The hardest part of being a comedy screenwriter in the 90s & early 00s must’ve been figuring out where to put your explosive diarrhea scene

This has not aged well and I hate that I still laughed in some scenes. It’s so bad but I laughed quite a bit. I don’t feel like I need to say anything else.

When it isn’t homophobic, racist, ableist, transphobic, ageist, xenophobic, turbosexist, fecally obsessed, overlit, or making OJ Simpson jokes, it’s still rather unpleasant.

This movie is fucking funny, but it’s also pretty damn stupid. The plot is ridiculous as hell, and don’t even get me started on the acting. It’s nothing special, but at least it gets the job done. Obviously, the best one is Ryan Reynolds, who basically plays the same version of Ryan Reynolds he plays in almost every fucking movie. But honestly, I don’t give a shit because the dude is fucking hilarious here. I was also fucking surprised to…

Ryan Reynolds era before “THE RYAN REYNOLDS ERA”
-
L
Early 2000s, same vibe as most flicks from that era but I think Ryan Reynolds brings a great amount of charm to this one. Instead of Van Wilder being some sleaze or jerk, he really cares about building relationships with those around him. Raunchy? Yes, every movie from this era was. Is there still some good elements? Absolutely

I’m not sure why I keep watching these movies. I guess my hope is that at some point one of them will surprise me and turn out to be the grossout college fratboy equivalent of North by Northwest. This was not that, although it did feature Aaron Paul onscreen for ten seconds, which is a step towards progress, methinks.

This movie had me thinking Ryan Reynolds was gonna be this generation’s Chevy Chase. Didn’t turn out like that but it’s a fun movie.

Yet another “raunchy” comedy with way more heartfelt moments (and dog nuts) than titties. And I guess 2002 was longer ago than I thought because comedies still senselessly deride minorities and the disabled like it’s the ‘90’s? I’m not even sure if I’m allowed to laugh in 2026, but I did. And I crode. Wow that’s too many dates to be a zinger. I gotta learn how to write at some point. Also, it took my dad 7 years to get a four year degree, and he brings it up so often it’s almost like he’s bragging… maybe he was wild in college 😂

“You shouldn’t take life so seriously. You’ll never get out alive.” This movie really doesn’t get the credit it deserves. It shifts the archetype of the college party animal and turned the character into someone that anyone can enjoy. I thought this was one of Ryan Reynolds’ best roles (not performances) just because of how perfectly his energy encapsulates the character. Wasn’t the funniest film of all time, but the majority of the jokes were pretty great. Such a truly solid and thoroughly entertaining movie!

I can’t objectively rate this movie any higher, but it’s such a silly, fun watch. Filled with good lines and stupid gags, though the pastry scene will make you throw up if you don’t look away.

It has been a couple decades since I watched this movie and I remembered it being funnier. A lot of jokes don’t land and some pretty subpar acting performances. One thing I do remember is the filled donut scene. Still can’t watch that without gagging.

Is it stupid-funny? Yes. Is it a great story? Also yes. Ryan Reynolds was the perfect pick for a trust fund kid that never wanted to grow up and leave the college experience behind. While a silly premise, the movie is great and very of its time.

A 2000’s classic on the lower end of the spectrum. It’s no American pie, it no girl next door. But it was ok. Ryan Reynolds was just finding his feet in this one

I liked Van + Gwen in the end of the movie. Also, the image quality and production looked good. Apart from that, I liked nothing. It´s not my kind of humour, that american-pervert and gross typa comedy that´s common in lots of US movies. I felt like it´s similar to that 2001´s Not Another Teen Movie (ma girls know that´s the worst movie i´ve ever seen. Anyways, 2/10 to VW

Very funny, I liked the dynamic between Gwen and Van, and the villain was hilarious. Van was super funny too. I wish I never saw the dog scene though.

Kinda aged like milk, And Tara Reid is distractingly bad, But this was a real banger when it came out, And Ryan Reynolds entire persona until he replaced it with the Deadpool schtick after the uncomfortable, Green Lantern dark times.

“Don’t take life to seriously, you’ll never get out alive” It’s an old film, but it’s definitely worth watching. It’s a really funny comedy. The picture quality isn’t the best, but the atmosphere is amazing. While watching the film, you’ll find yourself hoping that Ben gets to stay at the college. The film also teaches an important life lesson. Beneath its comedy, it shows that if you spend too much time worrying about the future, you’ll miss the present. Ryan Reynolds was the perfect choice for the main character. This movie is perfect for a movie night with your friends.

Remember when they made like 202 great comedy movies in the late 90’s into the 2000’s. They probably isn’t up there with those but hot damn did they use 1 actor from every single one of those comedy movies in this. I see you Kal wiping Ryan’s sweat away and he does it 2 years later in Harold and Kumar.

The piggies are eating good as of late. S/O to my coworker for making me watch these shitters to really round out my ratings graph. Ryan Reynolds has been Ryan Reynoldsing for a quarter of a century now, what a consistent guy The most 2002 thing about this movie is when the guy threatened to hit the kid trying to get in the party “upside the head with a 3 iron” nobody carries a 3 iron in the bag anymore bro

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Manages to make “stupid, but fun, but kind of smart” work in a way few comedies do. This is sort of the prototypical Ryan Reynolds role from which the past several decades of his life spring, but he carries this well. A lot of funny bits and smart writing make this just good enough.

Watched for Rise of the Gay Cinephiles’ “Scream as if You Know 10 Things I Hate About Band Camp (or How Millennial Teen Movies Taught Me Everything I Know About Sex, Friendship and the American Dream)” season. National Lampoon’s Van Wilder is a teen comedy following the most popular kid on campus as he meets a beautiful journalist who makes him realize that maybe he’s afraid to graduate. Within the first ten minutes of this film, we’re given a racist…

Watching “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder,” I grew nostalgic for the lost innocence of a movie like “American Pie,” in which human semen found itself in a pie. In “NatLampVW,” dog semen is baked in a pastry. Is it only a matter of time until the heroes of teenage grossout comedies are injecting turtle semen directly through their stomach walls? “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder,” a pale shadow of “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” tells the story of Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds), who…
- Synopsis
- Van Wilder has been attending college for far too many years and is scared to graduate, but Van’s father eventually realizes what is going on. When he stops paying his son's tuition fees, Van must come up with the money if he wants to stay in college, so he and his friends come up with a great fund-raising idea – throwing parties. However, when the college magazine finds out and reporter Gwen is sent to do a story on Van Wilder, things get a little complicated.
