Journey Into the Obscure: Episode X Writer and director Michael Clancy proves to not be entirely allergic to moments of genuine wit, and he does get good performances out of his cast, but Eulogy is a mostly boring family dysfunction dramedy with poorly written characters, weak humor, and dull pacing.

FILMS I OWN THAT I’VE NEVER SEEN 45/100 Of all the comedies based around families dealing with grief/funerals, this was by far the least comedic I’ve seen so far, yet it’s far too silly to really class as a drama either. It really does fail to find a decent balance which is a shame as it does have a great cast, they just don’t really have a lot to work with.

👎👎 this entire family should be tried at the hague, aside from ray romano’s twin tween sons, who should both be humanely euthanized as soon as possible

I was asked to stay at work a little longer today, so I did a search on a forgotten comedies of the 00s. halfway through the film, I realised I’d already started watching it long time ago. it’s so unmemorable. like, it’s not the worst funeral comedy, but it’s not the best. It’s got a good cast, but that’s all it has going for it. It’s got the most corny plot, the most over-the-top jokes

A fun comedy with a great cast and some solid zingers, but its pacing is a bit wonky, and not every joke works. Ray Ramano and Hank Azaria are the best parts of the film, while Rip Torn would’ve been if he’d been in more than five minutes of the movie. At just 80 minutes long, it goes by fast, but with this high quality of a cast, this should’ve been great.

I put off watching this movie for almost 20 years. Should’ve never watched it at all. Not a comedy. Not a single funny scene. Why is being a lesbian such a joke? I hate this early 2000s garbage. It’s all so repetitive and boring.

Eulogy is a comedy drama written and directed by Michael Clancy. Funerals can make for very funny movies—just watch Frank Oz’s Death At A Funeral—and this one’s no different. This one focuses on a very dysfunctional family who didn’t really know their grandfather too well and secrets are revealed. When they say this family is dysfunctional, they mean it. They’re played by an ensemble cast lead by Zooey Deschanel. This includes Debra Winger, Ray Romano, Hank Azaria, Kelly Preston, Famke Jansen, and Rip Torn. Romano is so sleazy with a mustache and his kids are great too, Winger is a conservative Karen who never shuts up to the point that her family are all silent and her husband just stammers…

Exhibit #2 in the case for my young adult crush on Jesse Bradford. Honestly I’m pretty sure it also left me sexually confused over Rip Torn. I don’t care that he’s old, he’s still hilarious, and as one character remarks, he always had that twinkle in his eye. But anyway. I digress. I think this movie is about something really relatable – who we are versus how we want other people to see us. My beloved Rip plays Edmund, the…

Eulogy is a funeral comedy that cannot keep a straight face, a crooked face, or any face long enough to become memorable. It gathers a cast so overqualified that one expects a wake of wickedness, then serves a lukewarm buffet of squabbles, gay-panic jokes, suicidal whimsy, and family rancor without the discipline to make nastiness signify anything beyond itself. The Collins clan reunites after the death of its patriarch, a man nobody can praise without spraining imagination. Granddaughter Kate, played…

Though I do love a dysfunctional family movie, this kind of missed every mark that makes other family chaos films work. Usually there are at least some redeeming qualities of each character, but each person felt half-lived and more like an idea of a character, which shows more the fault of the writer / director because this film is stacked with great actors.

Wow I’ll give half a star for Catherine Martell from Twin Peaks being the suicidal matriarch but then lowkey I should take it away for them putting her in a facial cast removing any future possibility for me to laugh halfway through the movie. And her acting wasn’t even good (fine I’ll reinstate the half star for Camp) so that’s a preview for how the rest of this was. Listen I love a funeral movie, so I was excited for…

One dead patriarch, one deliciously dysfunctional family, and one wickedly funny irreverent comedy! When three generations of a deliciously dysfunctional family gather to bury the family patriarch, the beloved granddaughter of the deceased is given the task of delivering the eulogy. In the days leading up to the funeral, family secrets are revealed, old grudges resurface and the household erupts with renewed vigor. Eulogy is ultimately a heartwarming portrait of a houseful of misfits celebrating the strangest and most enduring bond of all.

I assumed all the bad reviews had to be exaggerating with such a strong cast. They weren’t. It is terrible.

Very refreshing family. You won’t see a rendering of this type of dynamic in this day and age. Loved all of it.

Big mess. But there’s a scene where Hank Azaria is trying not to get caught smoking pot that i rewatched 12 times. that was great but mostly Boooo-ulogy.

A familiar setup, never finding its rhythm. The humor is there, but lighter than it should be, rarely carrying the scene. The acting doesn’t lift it— moments drift, feel recycled. Boring at times, a little corny, and easily replaced.

Somehow I had never heard of this movie even though it had a fairly recognizable cast and I was working at a theater when it released, so it must have been really limited. It was okay, I guess. It reminded me a bit of Home For the Holidays in that it was an awkward dark family comedy. I don’t think much of the humor in it would fly these days, and that is probably part of why it is so obscure.

I have never seen as much lesbian representation in films from the 2020s as I did in this film.

Homophobic? Kinda. Funny? Barely. Zooey Deschanel? Phenomenal.

Glenne Headly is so good, I put it together immediately. Stacked cast all over. Comedy silver out of comedy participation trophy script. This came out after Elf?? How old is Zooey Deschanel supposed to be??

sat through the whole movie solely bc i had an inkling annie will have a lesbian arc

Genuinely found this to be funnier than I expected. I enjoy small unknown comedy-dramas and if you do too I highly suggest watching this. There are some outdated jokes, but overall a fun watch that will pull a few laughs out of you. 3.5 🌟 (specifically 3.7)

It’s overly quirky, cliché, has a self-hating, Homophobic lesbian who decided to be a trad wife because reasons, and for some reason Zooey Deschanel is the most restrained performance in the bunch. That said, I laughed, enjoyed my time, and I’d probably watch it again.

2.84 I didn’t expect my dad and I to actually enjoy this film. I was shook that we watched it all! I thought that he would tell me to stop it in like five minutes since it was so fudged. loved this one so damn much. this was fucking weird and i enjoyed it a lot… apart from the damn ryan and katie romance i couldn’t have cared any less for that. also enjoyed the yuri twist with the aunt who was projecting homophobia towards the openly lesbian aunt. off topic, ray romano’s pornstache oddly suited him in this movie too?? wtf??? had a crush on him growing up so i’m biased, what the hell. also the eulogy katie delivered was really fuckin clever idc. i lowkey needed this sort of non sensical dramady mainly comedy to lighten up. this is my comfort movie now

If The Royal Tenenbaums had a rough night, slept through therapy, and woke up with a hangover at a family funeral, you’d get Eulogy. This is one of those early-2000s ensemble dark comedies that feels like everyone showed up to a different movie but somehow made it work. Zooey Deschanel is the awkward, eye-rolling narrator trying to hold the chaos together, while the rest of the cast — including Hank Azaria, Ray Romano, and Famke Janssen — take turns being…
