92 *Stefon voice* This movie has everything: musical numbers, balloons, antidotes, giant cymbals, life-boats used as sleds, giant bats, elephants, magic stones, exaggerated depiction of foreign cuisine, obvious sexual banter, secret passages, bugs, cults, bodies with their hearts ripped out, voodoo, lava and fire, slave labor, mine carts, giant buckets of water, hungry alligators, and one BALD villain.

thank you Mr. Spielberg for the singular torn sleeve!! perfectly symbolizes Indy’s two sides: hot professor by day, hot archaeologist also by day

Super racist in the same retrograde way those old pulpy colonialist adventure stories used to be (and amplified by some of that uniquely 80s grotesque excess, seriously the way this shoots India as functionally hell on earth is wild) but the opening and closing action setpieces are as breathlessly entertaining and technically perfect as there’s probably ever been. It’s a weird merging of a bitter, divorced George Lucas wanting to put his beloved creation through a darker, meaner, more gruesome chapter and Spielberg who appears to have very little interest in the material he came up with beyond its function as an excuse to craft a cartoon set piece rollercoaster machine. But what a machine! And how well-oiled! It goes…

Listen I can accept this was very much a product of it’s time but Willie is literally one of the worst written women I have ever seen in my life and I’ve played Danganronpa.

the best part of this movie is how Indy is just ….. soaked in sweat from beginning to end. the man is constantly drenched no matter what he’s wearing or how he’s feeling and it’s so funny that it almost transcends the bizarre racism. almost

The men in this movie have their priorities in the right order, who cares if she’s screaming to death we have to decide who really cheated at that card game. Watch it.

Such a certified hood classic right here! God I just love Short Round so much man. What a ball of sweet sunshine. This truly feels like a movie, like a 2 hour long practical roller coaster Indiana Jones just oozes aura

I understand that this was a product of its time but DAMN LMAO. I actually like the darker tones of this film, but the first Indy film is definitely better. It’s such a shame how horribly written Willie is. Short Round more than makes up for it imo. Probably the best sidekick in film history. My fave scene is probably when Indy and Short Round were arguing over the card game while Willie was screaming her head off in the background. Had me on the floor.

Retains a lot of the charm and whimsy of Raiders, but the annoying sidekicks and excessive gross-out scenes bog it down.

I hated how Willie was the butt of the joke and was seen as annoying. I didn’t like her relationship with Indy. Liked Short round. This movie felt racist

Wow, what a dramatic shift in tone from the first film to the second, much darker and creepier. They went bigger in everything from the first one, and not everything worked so well. Technically, as in the first film, the production and art direction responsible for the sets, props, and costumes did a great job, and John Williams’ music is equally brilliant. Spielberg’s direction didn’t surprise me as much as in the first film, but it’s still quite solid, which…

Not an enjoyable watch under a modern lens. Several characters were portrayed in such a way that I couldn’t wait to move onto The Last Crusade. I will say that the last 25 minutes of this movie made the watch worth my time. It was also great seeing a young Ke Huy Quan in action – what a lil’ cutie patootie.

Spielberg watchthrough pt. 8/35: Really love how unique this one is and how much it sticks out compared to the rest of the franchise. Also really impressed that it manages to the both the funniest and the darkest Indy film, while never compromising tone. Banger

The assertion that this film is racist, is validated mildly in my opinion, given it’s release in the early 80s when Indian stories were completely absent and were only shown as exotic orientalism. And showing Indian characters as deranged fanatics/cult villains is quite on the nose, and I cant relinquish the writers of this prejudice. But in that aspect given the current political climate and that of the past 15 years in India, with the rise of a political party…

it might actually be a little TOO insane. probably just gotta watch it again

Well, this movie’s tone was kinda all over the place. It felt both more silly/childish while at the same time showing more outright spooky shit than the first ever did. Humor sorta fell flat in a lot of places and the side characters felt kinda annoying a lot of time. Structure felt off. The plot is more like a sidequest than a main story, especially for only the 2nd movie in the franchise. Had a lot of weird “oh look…

I really underestimated this movie, I enjoyed it a lot more on the big screen. Cool that it’s somehow both the most goofy and the darkest Indiana Jones movie, action set-pieces don’t get much better than this
-
R
Honestly, shirtless Harrison Ford possessed by a shamanic brew, all sweaty and rugged? How did my little gay brain not keep that tucked away for later? It also tickles me seeing future Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan prove to us that he’s always deserved accolades for his acting abilities.
-
J
Decent, but certainly not as good as Raiders

Raiders is one of my favorite movies of all time and I remember loving Indiana Jones as a kid. This movie was the one I watched by far the least and I remember the least of. After watching it, I definitely see why. It’s a substantially darker and somewhat sillier movie than the first but I did not enjoy it as much. I think it boils down to a much weaker villain and the damsel-is-actually-in-distress is not nearly as strong…

Fortune and Glory I can imagine the movie theaters roaring with laughter at Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the humor in this one and the dynamic between Indy, Short Round, and Willie are simply wonderful and perfect! Don’t get me wrong, but it’s much better and flows much more smoothly than with Marion in Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark! “Indy, my friend”
-

Temple of doom over Raiders of the lost ark. Hell yeah! Short Round, my boy, is goated!

Raiders is still the best, but I’ve found myself rewatching this one a lot over the past five years. The massive tonal swings it takes and the high number of exhilarating set pieces makes it a very easy one to rewatch.

It has its obvious elephant-in-the-room problems but seeing this for the first time in a decade, it’s twice as dark, twice as funny, and twice as good as I remember. Spielberg at his most ridiculous. Indy, Willie, and Shorty are a legitimately hilarious comedy trio.

Leaning completely into a darker, much wilder vibe than the original makes this such a thrilling ride. It doesn’t hold back on the suspense or the chaos, and that legendary mine cart chase alone is pure, nonstop adventure perfection. ⛏️🐍🔥

why is no one talking about the last scene where Indiana pulls back Willie with his whip and omg amrish puri and waymond wang together in a movie

that entire sequence of them escaping through the underground took forever… like them on the minecart took forever and the bridge scene also just took too damn long

Would be 5 stars if not for Willie. Pretty much cargo throughout the whole journey.

Shorty is the real hero. Everyone would be dead without him. Legend
-
H
The darkest and goriest of them all. This is my favourite of the franchise and although this is loathed by some, it’s just a great adventure of selflessness. The rope bridge finale alone is still a thrill to watch but there are just so many great characters here.

This is a superior sequel to the original film. While other reviewers here seem to mistake it for a cultural documentary to brand it as racist, the movie is never meant to be realistic; it is a deliberate imitation of 1930s pulp adventure tropes. My only major complaint is the main female character, who is insufferable. CURIO: The gross-out banquet scene featuring chilled monkey brains and beetle larvae was filmed in London. The “live” beetles were actually custom-made props crafted from blue-bottle flies and food flavoring, while the monkey brains were sculpted out of raspberry puree.
-
P
The filmmaking is still impressive, but man, a lot of glaring issues from the first one are even worse in this. 60% of this is literally quite awful. the mine cart scene does go crazy tho tbf

In my opinion although Temple of Doom isn’t quite as good as Raiders, it’s still pretty good. It’s a weird fucking film, it really is a look ant India from a uniquely British colonialist, orientalist viewpoint. Like this is something Rudyard Kipling or a contemporary of his might have written. I like the weirdness. Objectively, it’s racist as hell but if you can bring yourself to look past that, there’s some good stuff here. I love Short Round. Very racist stuff again, but I like him. It’s a weird film.

Who is Indiana Jones? Is he Han Solo? James Bond? Like I get that Tintin does a lot of non-journalism for a journalist and all, but at least he’s tonally consistent. Indiana Jones seems like a different guy to me depending on who they want for the moment. Didn’t he used to have kind of humble professor vibes? They’re gone. Who is this girl? Is she just a sexual conquest, a damsel in distress just so Indiana Jones has a…

I’ve revised the order of my preference on the classical Indy-movies. This is _not_ the best of them. But I kinda like the setting more than Raiders of the Lost Arc. I’m left with the hard choice to put this on third place. Here’s why: The parachute-by-liferaft is unforgivable. Willie Scott is annoying as fuck. Short Round almost as much. Indy is reduced in parts to Goofy MacGoofersson. Random people in a rural village in India know english? Well, maybe.…

-

That Kirsten Dunst MJ meme except it’s Short Round yelling “Hey LADY! He SAID his name is DOCTOR JONES!” Still my least favorite of the Spielberg-directed Indiana Jones films, mostly because of Willie. But I can’t deny how mean this is and how great that final act is, with setpiece after setpiece. And it’s fun this go-round to clearly hear where John Williams probably got some of the inspiration for “Duel of the Fates.”

unlike with Raiders, which I watched repeatedly on a taped VHS copy as a kid and thus remembered basically beat for beat, I remembered very little of this one outside of the scene where the one guy has his heart ripped out of his chest. i can vividly remember that image and the feeling of terror it instilled in me 25 years later. ironically, on rewatch after all these years, Temple of Doom is clearly the goofier and more childish…
