Synopsis

19-year-old Eric, arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father. As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist, who runs an anger management group for prisoners. Torn between gang politics, prison corruption, and a glimmer of something better, Eric finds himself in a fight for his own life, unsure if his own father is there to protect him or join in punishing him.

Starred up’s premise may sound sappy and dime a dozen, but the actual execution is anything but that. A young boy (19) gets ‘starred up’ from a prison for young offenders to a maximum security prison. His dad, who he doesn’t really know, happens to be incarcerated there as well and he soon falls under the care of a volunteering social worker who wants to help him manage his anger issues. Reading that you’d never expect the places this film goes. The moment the social worker was introduced I started to get fidgety and apprehensive. The notion of reform, hope against hope, is something usually handled in the tackiest of fashions. Even though it is very clear from the start…

Riveting, brutal, bruising, and heavy stuff; Starred Up is one of the greatest prison dramas ever made and one of the most boldly potent experiences that I’ve seen in a very long time. The camerawork, the incredible acting by Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn, the vulgar and snappy script; It all builds and builds to a film that left me stunned and vulnerable. See it as soon as possible.

I am not my father’s keeper. I do not control him, nor am I accountable for his actions. I am not responsible for the way he raised me. The way he taught me how to survive in this world by lashing out to get what I want, unless what I want is something he doesn’t. The way he looks out for me when I’m in trouble, except when he’s the one causing trouble for me. The way he steers me clear from predatory influences, unless that predatory influence just happens to be him. I am not responsible for being born. I never asked to deal with a man who shouts at me just as much as he says he loves…

I couldn’t possibly count the amount of F-bombs in this movie, even if I tried… yet ironically it has some of the “least forced” dialogue I’ve seen all year. Gritty as can be, and flawlessly acted & directed. No complaints here and no excuse not to give this film at least a 4.5/5 (I was THAT close to giving it a perfect score). A major success of a movie in a been-there-done-that genre; possibly my second favorite prison themed film (after Hunger) since the turn of the century.

Absolutely loved this film… Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn are outstanding. They pull it off very well. Gritty, violent and intense, but very deep and sad at the same time. I’m just blown away. Highly recommended!!

i hate myself so much there’s a part in this film where there’s a note in ben mendelsohn’s cell that says “love you daddy” and i immediately turned to my friend and went “i wrote that”

Jack O’Connell doesn’t just act in this, he detonates. Every twitch, every outburst, every moment of stillness feels lived-in and heartbreakingly real. His portrayal of Eric is raw and volatile, but never one-note. You can see that beneath the violence, there’s a deep undercurrent of pain. I can never express enough how much I love Starred Up, but all I can say is that it is one of the most overlooked films of the 2010s.

fuckkkkkkkkkkkk. staggeringly great. like a brutal & unintelligibly hardcore Good Will Hunting set in the bowels of a scummy British prison. unmissable. look at David Mackenzie’s filmography. *that* guy making *this* movie is kind of like if Jonathan Liebsman followed TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES with fucking ALIENS (Mackenzie’s previous work was waaaaay better than Liebsman’s, for anyone keeping score at home). this is just savage stuff… overreaches a teensy bit at the end, and might be a bit too clipped, but still utterly essential. full review to come next week for Complex.

Just another Jack O’Connell Monday ™ If this movie tells us that prison is a world with its own arcane social rules and a language unintelligible to us outsiders, then Eric Love is the kid who grew up speaking that language at home. Tragic, obviously. Upsetting, it goes without saying. But I also found this weirdly funny, in an “SNL skit where guys get angry and start fighting about escalatingly trivial things” way.

Prideful hostility, over and over and over…I kept thinking they would have some kind of epiphany but disappointingly they do not. And the ending didn’t make it any better it honestly felt like a farce, just to wrap it up with a somewhat happy ending.

Mixed impressions. The first half, where we are setting up the characters, the atmosphere, is more solid than the second half. The more the movie progresses, the less credible it becomes. Some characters are very strong, like the main young one as well as his dad. The volunteer therapist, a little bit less. The mean murderous prison ward, that was very stereotypical, he is the unidimensional had guy and that just didn’t work well. They do have this folkloric vision of prison life.

W/ Zoran Absolutely devastating and raw, sad and heart-breaking. Taking a peek into prison life is always interesting, as it is something I (hopefully) will never get to see in real life. The group dealing with rage issues was, of course, my favourite part of the film: a supportive community, encouraging the main character to learn to sit with the feeling of anger, which I wonder if it is the way people who have problems with it sometimes treat it…

Surprised I never heard of this movie before, since I’m a big fan of the prison genre + Jack O’Connell and especially Ben Mendelsohn. Guess it makes sense though as it’s an obscure British indie. Starred Up is directed by the critically acclaimed David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Under the Banner of Heaven, Outlaw King). Like his other films, it’s raw, authentic, and showcases a deep character study. O’Connell and Mendelsohn are both great in the lead roles. The have such a natural chemistry playing father and son. I really enjoyed this movie, and I’d recommend it if you’re a fan of the genre.

“Kid’s causing issues. You know what’s necessary.” A brutal, rough n gruff movie that deals with emotional and physical trauma. It shows how easily a rule-set and what’s supposed to be “governed fairly” environment can quickly turn sour, manipulative and twice as dangerous. To be completely honest the movie has moments where you don’t know where or how it will end because of how long some of the pauses are, it might be artistically inclined. Because many of the doors…
