As soon as the movie ended and the screen went dark, just before the credits started to roll, a large “L” appeared on the screen before fading into the director’s name. That is also the most succinct review anyone could give this thing.

Looks more like a Chernobyl victim than a wolf man. Did Leigh Whannell just want to do a remake of The Fly instead? I want Universal Monster movies. Not Universal Monsters As Commentary For Generational Trauma movies

Glimmers of something special, especially when it plays with POV and sound, but if you’re going to do an impression of The Fly, you should probably care more about your characters. Full review on YouTube here.

Some great tension here, but man a lot of misused time and slowing down to explain the allegory that was clear as day from the first 10 minutes of the movie multiple times. Awoooo: youtu.be/0s6H2EgcQ64

My favorite part was when this movie suddenly turned into Saw and I turned into that “DiCaprio pointing” meme. I see you, Leigh Whannell. I see you.

This movie is creepy, but it’s not fully a horror movie. It’s a sad, unsettling story of a man losing himself. The movie is not as bad as the ratings say, it’s not amazing but I think it’s worth the watch.

Maybe my expectations were significantly lower, but I quite liked this. Definitely some script issues, very predictable and odd characters choices but loved the use of POV and the steady The Fly like transformation throughout the film.

Disappointing and underwhelming. Too much boring trauma talk by a family that felt like they barely knew each other. I did think the sound was good with a cool spider scene and I really enjoyed the Wolf man’s POV. This movie however lacked the intensity and energy of Leigh Whannell’s previous films Upgrade and Invisible man.
-
E
The immersion is great, the visual and audio work is so good. But the characters are poorly written, the dialogues are terrible and overly expository. I’m not a fan of very humanized werewolves like this one; I know it makes some reference to the classic, but it always gives me more of a bear-man impression than a wolf-man, but for this particular movie, the idea worked. Overall entertaining 👍

Remember when horror movies actually had a cast big enough to kill people off? When you had 8–10 characters, enough time to pick favorites, hate a few, and genuinely wonder who was making it to the end? Apparently the creators of Wolf Man don’t. Instead, we get 90+ minutes of basically the same three people running, hiding, arguing, and trying to escape one threat. There’s barely any opportunity for a body count, no real sense that anybody could be next,…

I appear to be in the minority but I absolutely adored this. Leigh Whannell brings the same personal, character based approach to this film as he did to “The Invisible Man”. It is about generational trauma and how it is passed down. It is deeply affecting as well as being genuinely scary. Whannell is one of the best horror film makers we have. Christopher Abbott is heartbreaking in the lead and Julia Garner is magnificent. Young Matilda Firth is excellent as well. A superb and massively underrated film. 8/10

Why go to the trouble of setting up some lore and a little character development when you’re just going to turn in a sad, lame, low stakes werewolf film? This went from feeling like a low rent horror to a toned down family melodrama. Genuinely surprised the bulk of its story takes place in one evening that feels like it’s gone on for ages with no spark, scares, or even notable plot points. Squandered potential, a real lime seltzer of a motion picture.

“It’s not hard to die, its the easiest thing in the world. Were all inches away from it.” When Wolf Man first came out, I never got around to watching it. As a big fan of the Universal Monsters, it was always on my radar, especially because I had heard great things about Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man. I still haven’t gotten around to that one either, but between that film’s reputation and my enjoyment of Whannell’s work on Upgrade…

No fault lies in the cast’s abilities. But something was amiss here. Wolf Man lulls in pace, the speed uneven and often times halting and starting again, and it feels like there is a five to ten minute chunk missing out in the middle of the second act. The character progression often felt rushed and unearned as well, perhaps indicative of the missing middle piece. I’m tolerant to visually darker filmmaking but i can see how the often shadowed shots…

“Mommy? Why did Daddy have to get sick?” “Daddy’s father… I think he may have given his sickness to Daddy.” I must have seen a completely different movie than basically everyone else. There’s a surprising amount of complex character work done with very little dialogue. Stunning images of New Zealand standing in for the lush forests of rural Oregon, a…

I think Julia Garner said maybe 75 words this entire movie. I really wish they would do something with her hair. And she always looks really angry, which worked great in Ozark. The body horror was amazing. It was so disgusting. I knew the other wolf was his dad. But if they’re both wolves, why does the dad wanna kill him? Couldn’t they get along? The part where he starts eating his own arm is when I would start running and barricading myself and hiding and anything but just standing there watching him.

The hype back then was so thrilling on Twitter. I watched this film in theatres. The story is somewhat good. The film shows a father-child bond beautifully and shows how this connection provides security and love. It also reminds us that a father’s love is always significant protective and unwavering no matter the circumstances.

it felt much shorter than it was .. i’d like it if the movie’s scenes were a little less predictable. also, a lot of the timeline is blurry and there is some lore missing. like how Blake is suddenly in the city and no information is given on how he made it there and how things played out with his dad, what made him go missing in the first place. maybe i just don’t understand it well .. i dunno

Argh I really wanted to like this more because it starts off so strongly and the family unit dynamic is so interesting but then it just becomes this really basic, quite boring body horror film with barely any dialogue or nuance – and really poor special effects & make up. Wolf Man follows Blake Luvell as he takes his family back to the place where he grew up, little does he know, there’s something waiting for him in the woods. I had no idea this was a remake until I read the reviews, honestly as a stand alone film I think this was pretty interesting. I couldn’t really look at it as a remake in certain aspects because I’ve never seen the original. The characters were okay-ish, by themselves they…

The script wastes Julia Garner — the film keeps undercutting itself with moments that don’t hold up to a second of scrutiny. A survivor scrambling out a van window to the top of a tree it’s somehow landed in is the kind of logic gap that yanks you straight out of the tension instead of into it. A shame, given what she’s capable of elsewhere.

The story of the Wolf Man has been told quite a few times throughout the years. This is my first time watching this version of it. This came out in 2025 and is a Blumhouse production. I tend to enjoy Blumhouse’s movies. They’re the same production company that released both M3GAN movies and both Black Phone movies. I’m a big fan of both of those franchises.

Boy, I decided to rewatch this with my full attention for SECOND CHANCE CINEMA after not liking it very much my first time around and I was wrong. Sputters to a start with flat dialogue, meanders through long-winded lead-ups to weak jumpscares, and tries to salvage that wasted time by pawning off an unearned ending. The scraps of context the viewer is given to understand the family isn’t enough to form a connection, let alone empathize with them. The most background we have is for Blake, and he’s non-verbal a quarter of the way into the movie! The mother and daughter feel like strangers to each other, and…

Oerdegelijke weerwolvenfilm. Net als met ‘The Invisible Man’ (2020) neemt regisseur Leigh Whannell een van de Universal Monsters. Eerst The Invisible Man en nu dus Wolf Man. Veel…

Streamed on HBO Max PH 🇵🇭 (Leaves August 30). With so underwhelmingly little of the plot, it has a strong metaphor on familial cycle of trauma/abuse; and disconnected/parental absence… Then it has those gorgeous POV shots, intentional lighting, just immaculate visual vibes. I’m not big on werewolf lore, but the bit with terrible parenting as a transferrable/inheritable disease sorta stuck with me. It ain’t much but there’s a good idea buried in here. PS., 2025 is Julia Garner’s year. Weapons, Fantastic Four, and then this. Also, it was announced recently that Christopher Abbot is gon be Professor X!? HE’S A WOLVERINE HERE, LET’S GOOOOO!!!

Genuinely confused as to why this isn’t better. The cast is great, the commitment to hardcore makeup and practical effects is more than welcome, the pitch-black cinematography and layout of the predator-prey hunting/chasing stuff is exactly what I want in horror, but somehow it just doesn’t add up to much more than a tepid B-movie, which is baffling given than Leigh Whannel’s previous two films – Upgrade and The Invisible Man – are electrifyingly well-executed 5-star epics which reinvent and…

There’s a lot of good things in this film. The main character, Blake (Christopher Abbott), is likeable, the slow burn transformation was cool and the idea that turning into a werewolf is like catching a contagious virus was grounded and interesting. But at the end of day, all that really matters is what the werewolf looks like. And this film has one of the worst werewolf designs I have ever seen. Looked more like the feral man or Gollum than the wolf man.

I really don’t understand why this has such a low rating. I thought it was incredible. the sound engineering and cinematography really made this film. great take on the monster classic, really, again, well done. Ofc I absolutely adore the practical effects choice and could totally tell it was The Fly inspired, I loved it. it was also easy for me to get into since I really like Julia Garner, but holy shit, Chris Abbott was fucking spot on for the role. overall I really enjoyed it specifically for the choice of seeing things from the monster perspective, that lack of communication was quite brilliant. …

I didn’t have high expectations for this horror film by Leigh Whannell, but I’ve had to change my mind. It might not be a masterpiece, given its predictability, but I found the technical execution, especially the cinematography, to be excellent.
