I didn’t think a Santa courtroom film was going to be any good but I was wrong. I love how they establish Santa isn’t real to any of the adults until they all start seeing how his existence can benefit their business. Corporations see a spike in profit and they suddenly want to make Santa real because it will encourage parents to buy gifts. Santa becomes legally real because of self interest and not the general ‘holiday film Christmas spirit’. It’s a grounded reality of the story and I genuinely liked it. Greatest Films of All Time

What’s lovely about this movie is there is no miracle on 34th Street — at least not an overt one (unless you count Macy’s encouraging its customers to shop at other department stores if they don’t stock the item they want). Kris Kringle may be Santa Claus; nothing in the film rules that out. But by design, nothing conclusively proves he is the real Santa either. He might just be a delusional old man. Even the last shot, meant to suggest a divine presence, can be easily explained without any supernatural shenanigans — it’s basically just a Rorschach test for the audience. So what do you believe? It’s easy to believe in magic and miracles when a reindeer flies right in front of you, as in so many lesser Christmas films. Faith demands belief in something you cannot see. So the real miracle, if this movie does its job, happens in the viewer’s heart.

The true miracle on 34th street is that one of the all time Christmas classic films is also a courtroom drama. Since the climax of the movie comes down to a politically ambitious judge litigating on Santa, there must be some Saint Nick style magic in the rest of the plot of “Miracle on 34th Street” that has cast a spell for three quarters of a century. There is, no doubt, and that magic comes in the twinkle in the corner of a child’s eye. While Maureen O’Hara and John Payne are top billed in the film, the real arc of the plot belongs to that of Natalie Wood as the precocious young Susan Walker. Receiving a narrative typically relegated…

Christmas Spirit A sweet fairy tale with a touch of dark humor. *The Miracle on 34th Street* is a quintessential example of a thematic, festive film that avoids being melodramatic or naive. The story is simple: a little girl who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus and a mother who is dismissive and cynical about the Christmas spirit—but all that changes when he appears. Who? Santa Claus. Edmund Gwenn wears the traditional costume and becomes the children’s sweet friend, handing out…

2026 First-Time Watches Christmas in July Ranked Watched on Disney+ as the finale of my ‘Christmas in July’ 2026 marathon Well, I said I’d bookend this year’s summer Yuletide party with this one and there’s nothing more sacred and unforgivable-to-break than a Christmas promise. And whilst the ‘94 one has its charms and wonders, it’s hard to deny the power of the original as a defining holiday classic; I thought the pairing of Richard Attenborough and Mara Wilson were pure magic…

1947: The holiday season is in full swing when a cultured gentlemen with twinkling eyes, and ample belly, and a snowy beard is hired as Macy’s department store Santa. He claims his name is Kris Kringle, and soon fills everyone with Christmas spirit – except for his boss, Doris Walker, who’s raising her daughter Susan to not believe in Santa but when Kris is declared insane and put on trail everyone’s faith is put to the test as old and…

Miracle on 34th street has what every Christmas film wants, along with what the majority don’t have – grounded realism. Seaton seems to be showing us the embodiment of optimism, juvenile joy, kind spirit, and faith in Kringle, opposed by the stern, pessimistic, money driven Sawyer. Inbetween them stands people in the middle, like Doris who is a soft non believer and Fred is a soft believer, finally, Susan is right at the centre – brought up being a non…

Miracle on 34th Street is a timeless Christmas classic that succeeds because it treats the idea of belief with warmth and sincerity. Rather than being just a holiday film, it is a gentle story about hope, kindness, and the importance of imagination. The story follows Kris Kringle, a department store Santa who claims to be the real Santa Claus, and the people around him who must decide whether to believe him. Maureen O’Hara brings strength and realism to the film,…

Miracle on 34th Street is the kind of classic Hollywood film that earns its sentiment through sincerity rather than manipulation. It embraces the magic of the Christmas season without ever being overt.. What makes the film endure is its quiet faith in kindness and imagination. Edmund Gwenn gives one of the most charming performances in holiday cinema, embodying Kris Kringle with such warmth. George Seaton’s direction keeps the story grounded, allowing its emotional beats to land naturally. While it occasionally…

An all-time Christmas movie. Edmund Gwenn might be the greatest Santa ever. Shoot, he had me convinced. This isn’t just a Christmas movie, either. It’s also a courtroom drama, a story about faith, and on commercialization and corporate greed. The irony is great: the department stores push Santa because they realize that appearing kind will ultimately make them more profit, which is still so relevant today. Companies are constantly virtue signaling in the name of profits. The line, “We’ll be…

For a guy as busy as Santa Claus, it’s mind boggling to me he would take an additional job as the store Santa at Macy’s during his most important weeks of the year but hey, what do I know?

Yes I watched a Christmas film in July! Get over it! Anyway, the film was delightful. Natalie Wood was very charming and Edmund Gwen is highly likeable as Kris Kringle. Also enjoyed Alfred Newman’s acoustic renditions of classic christmas tunes. The narrative encourages you to be optimistic and not give up hope even when you’ve already been let down.

“Susan, i speak french, but that doesn’t make me Joan of Arc.” Welp😂

Well I didn’t remember that this was mostly a courtroom drama. At least its a cute courtroom drama. Natalie Wood is just like me when I was a kid wishing for outrageous gifts to prove I wouldn’t get them. Pretty incredible this movie avoids ever giving conclusive proof that he is Santa. As the audience, I just assume he is but you can easily assume he isn’t the entire film and nothing full heartedly proves against that.

This is so fricking cute, really put me into the Christmas spirit as a 22 year old in June. This is probably one of my favorite characterizations of Santa Claus, and I like that a story like this is told as realistically as it possibly could be. A perfect balance of rationalism and sap. Having a court case and a legal technicality prove his existence is honestly one of the most clever ways to tell this story, and it remains…

The premise of this movie is pretty great. I love the whole thing about how Kris Kringle may or may not be the real Santa Claus and this whole town is questioning him. Unfortunately, while the premise and acting is super solid, this film does drag horrendously. There’s several moments in the film that slow down to a snails pace. A very enjoyable watch, but not necessarily something I’d seek out to watch again.

This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, deffinetally the best Christmas movie. If it wasn’t a holiday movie, it would be in my top 4 on my profile.

I never thought I’d be saying this, but Miracle on 34th Street actually left me feeling a bit torn. It’s a Christmas classic for a reason, and there’s very little to dislike about the filmmaking or the performances. It’s not even particularly emotionally manipulative or sappy. Mostly, it’s just wholesome. But it’s also very difficult to shake the feeling that you’re watching an actual Macy’s advertisement, and it’s even more difficult to overlook how weirdly focused it all is on…

What a fine example of a golden age christmas movie! (I haven’t seen It’s A Wonderful Life) I love the scene of Santa singing to the Dutch girl and I feel it plays out way better than the deaf girl in the remake. Anyway, just a sweet, but not too saccharine christmas classic which is enjoyable!

Apparently 1947 was a big year for Christmas movies. I don’t particularly enjoy holiday movies, especially Christmas movies, because they often rely on themes like “Just Have Faith” or “At Least We Have Each Other”. Miracle on 34th Street falls into the former category. It succeeds at what it’s trying to do objectively. Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) is Santa and everyone tries to prove him wrong. The argument of the film is Realism vs. Fantasy – and spends a lot…
1 -
B
A very charming, heartwarming Christmas movie. Really loved it. Now Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle was just perfect. He brings so much charm, warmth, and that delightful, open-hearted feeling through his performance. The film does leave it open to interpretation whether he is or isn’t Santa Claus. But I felt the movie leans more towards suggesting that he isn’t. Still… I’d like to believe that he is.

“Maybe he’s only a little crazy, like painters, or composers, or some of those men in Washington.” Possibly the most feel-good movie ever made? Actively hopes for a better world and swiftly punishes those who choose their selfishness and pride over their humanity. Refreshingly critical of the over-medicalization of “mental illness” at a time when being a little goofy was enough to land you in a ward. Extremely based and Santa pilled! Also, every once in a while, it’s nice to imagine a world where it’s safe to leave your child alone with a man you’ve never met before…
-

I don’t normally watch Christmas movies in March but I did anyway. Going through the best picture nominees of 1947 and apparently this came out in July of 47, so Christmas in July was a thing back then too obviously. Such a great movie. Edmund Gwenn definitely gave one of the best supporting performances in history with this. I even believed he was Santa Claus. Oscar well deserved. Back when Christmas movies actually had heart. Hallmark crushed that for us.

Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to. – Fred Gailey This is the first black & white movie I’ve ever watched, and it’s also my first Christmas movie to start my ‘December Christmas movie marathon tradition’. It was sweet, simple & short. It is a Classic Christmas movie, which reminds you the true meaning of Christmas – to have faith, even if it doesn’t seem easy.

A classic Christmas film. Worth it to watch with the family during the holidays, but NOT every year. Wouldn’t take this over It’s a wonderful life or a White Christmas but still sweet in its own way.

One of those tales of do you believe in Santa Claus or not? Seeing is believing stuff. It is cute and a nice storyline, but it slowly moves. I like the remake better. It was cool to see what the Macy’s parade looked like back in the day.

One of my favorite Christmas movies as a child.

One of my personal favorite holiday films. Natalie Wood is utterly adorable as a skeptical, jaded child who slowly starts to believe in something magical again. Edmund Gwenn might be my favorite on-screen Santa ever, warm, fatherly, and completely non-judgmental in a way that makes you believe in him just as much as she does. It’s a true holiday classic, but honestly, it’s so comforting and charming you can watch it any time of year.

Saw the remake before I saw this, but loved this too

Maybe a little too sentimental in spots, it still holds up watching it today as an endearing Christmas movie. It has a great life affirming message, nice performances from Maureen O’Hara, Edmund Gwenn, John Payne and a young Natalie Wood as the doubtful daughter. Make sure to avoid the colourized version.

- Synopsis
- Kris Kringle, seemingly the embodiment of Santa Claus, is asked to portray the jolly old fellow at Macy's following his performance in the Thanksgiving Day parade. His portrayal is so complete that many begin to question if he truly is Santa Claus, while others question his sanity.
