It is fascinating to observe a Clint Eastwood movie in which almost nothing works, and it ends up pushing to the forefront all the unpleasant aspects of his personality. That said, I do love that he made a stunt-heavy movie packed with car chases and elaborate violence and somehow made it look even darker lit than usual. Some of this action is very impressive staged. The movie was co-written by Sam Raimi’s sometimes partner Scott Spiegel whose previous credit was a William Lustig movie and this can play like what if 80s grindhouse action – tasteless, extra violent, lots of physical action, brash and full of dumb psychology – could be executed with an amount of top tier resources that…

if the gauntlet was the platonic ideal of the 70s cop film: a relaxed tone, stark cinematography, featuring a lone man against the system, loaded with practical stunts, then the rookie is the platonic ideal of the 80s/90s cop film: jam-packed full of ridiculous macho quips, a funky score, two contrasting buddy-cops, a huge bodycount, and loads of explosions! i don’t know why the hell this isn’t talked about more, because it’s really fun, never boring, and shot with eastwood’s trademark unfussy style. it’s almost a parody of what a cop movie is, and relishes in exaggerating every possible cliche. very underrated!

Had me in the first half, not going to lie. As soon as Clint got kidnapped, it lost all the momentum, as he was the driving force behind the comedy and the action. Even when Charlie Sheen gets him out, the action isn’t that enticing. Another thing is that Eastwood cast Raul Julia as a German for some odd reason. Clint Eastwood ranked

If you’re the kind of touched individual who—like me—saw “Last Action Hero” and thought, ‘you know, I wouldn’t mind watching that Jack Slater IV movie…,’ well, I think “The Rookie” is the flick we’ve been dreaming of this entire time. On paper, it’s simple inversion of “Lethal Weapon” where the old guy is the maverick with a death wish and the young one is the buttoned-up conservative, but with Clint Eastwood behind the camera this material is just the ignition switch for pure rock ‘n roll filmmaking, a movie in which Charlie Sheen spitting fire into a bartender’s face isn’t even the craziest thing that happens during its two hour runtime…a sheer delight of 90’s analog cinema, and one of…

far and away Eastwood’s most bombastic attempt to cash in on 80s trash action machismo, turning in what is basically a riff on the buddy dynamics of Tango and Cash a year after its release, with Eastwood pulling no punches in his profane Cash role opposite Charlie Sheen’s buttoned up Tango character type — mostly 120 minutes of vitriolic buddy banter interrupted by moments of loud action, including a sequence full of explosions that feel plucked from a Stallone or Schwarzenegger film from the era; might be Clint’s most underrated work as a director and his most fun in front of the camera on a given day

“It’s not just a job! It’s a fucking adventure!” – Lt. Ray Garcia Clint Eastwood’s contribution to the 80’s/90’s buddy-cop boom relies on the chemistry between Clint and Charlie Sheen, has some impressive action sequences and is pretty entertaining most of the time. It also has Clint being raped by Sônia Braga. That’s new, fairly original and, I would guess, not entirely unpleasant. Must have been fun to direct that scene. I always like this movie as a kid and I had a pretty good time revisiting it today. With a two hour runtime the movie is definitely too long and loses momentum from time to time. But I like me a god buddy-cop movie and this is a decent…

Veteran cop Sergeant Nick Pulovski (Clint Eastwood) reluctantly teams up with the inexperienced Detective David Ackerman (Charlie Sheen) to crack a car theft ring and bring down a crime boss, in this buddy cop actioner directed by Eastwood and co-starring Raul Julia, Sônia Braga, Tom Skerritt and Lara Flynn Boyle. This was Eastwood’s last film before Unforgiven reenergised his career and took him into more reflective roles, and although there are some potentially interesting ideas raised about second chances and experience vs youth here, they aren’t explored enough to break out of the conventions of the story. Even though some humour is sprinkled through, everything seems to be taken too seriously, making the more over-the-top sequences stick out. It uses…

Largely forgotten buddy cop entry by Eastwood, is not really a good movie but one where a lot of notable things occur: -Clint is raped! Really! -Charlie shoots a dog and a women, in scenes clearly intended to get the audience cheering! -Raul Julia! -Clint and Charlie argue about which donuts are the best! -Clint tells Charlies father “If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster!”. -One of the craziest highway car chases you will ever see opens up the movie, throughout the stunts look big and expensive. -Charlie lights an entire bar on fire in order to get info out of the bartender, later he drives his motorcycle through the front door of his own house! -Despite barely swearing…

Apparently in order to convince Warner to foot the bill for his more personal and uncommercial passion project White Hunter, Black Heart Clint agreed to do this for-hire script by two young in-house writers who were hired to provide the studio with a buddy cop movie that knowingly hit every big box office trope and trend of the 80s maximalist action-comedy. As a result, there is a bizarre tension and sleepy energy to this derived from the fact that a movie clearly meant for a Shane Black or Tony Scott is starring and being directed by a 60-year-old Eastwood who was clearly eager to leave the Dirty Harry sequels behind him and move on to his more somber, self-reflective run…

“¿Tienes fuego?”

Will Clint Eastwood’s character ever finish a cigar? Why are Raul Julia and Sonia Braga cast as Germans when they can’t do German accents? Is this what happened to Donna after Twin Peaks but before MiB2? Don’t watch this movie – although Eastwood does have a great ‘line before the kill’ with an excellent Julia reaction. So just watch that on YouTube or whatever

The Rookie (1990) I finally watched The Rookie, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood alongside Charlie Sheen. And the feeling it left me with was… an interesting one. Because this might be the most conventional buddy-cop movie I’ve seen in a very long time. The story is exactly what you’re expecting. Clint Eastwood plays a veteran detective whose partner is killed at the beginning of the film. Naturally, he’s out for revenge. To make matters worse, he’s assigned a rookie…

J’ai aimé “La Vague”, “L’expérience” (deux films allemands tient!), “The man from Earth”, Sliders saison 1 épisode 10 “Un monde parfait” ect etc… The Rookie piggybacks heavily on the Lethal Weapon formula, but flipping the dynamic so Clint Eastwood gets to play the grizzled veteran while Charlie Sheen carries the actual character arc works surprisingly well. The practical stunt work and early chemical spark between the leads deliver plenty of fun 90s action chaos before the script foolishly separates them for a bloated middle act. It’s over-the-top, deeply flawed, and mid-tier Eastwood, but still an entertaining ride if you turn your brain off for the set pieces.

Over the top in an entertaining way. Clint is actually funny in this. Raul Julia never disappoints. Charlie Sheen is a psycho in this, on all the drugs. Donna from Twin Peaks is his gf? The Jazz soundtrack was amazing. Clint still gets laid even while being tied up and held hostage. Really surprised me with this. This had all the makings of a bad Clint movie, and it seems to have that reputation. But maybe this is a guilty…

Kinda shocked that I never saw this entire movie until just recently since I was just devouring stuff like this up at the movies when it first came out in ’90….but in retrospect it makes sense because this is just plain awful. 🫣 Most of the action as directed by Eastwood is solid enough especially a couple of car chases which bookend the movie…..but wow, everything else just falls apart with a strong cast which is utterly wasted. this is the new centurions (1972) but clint eastwood doesn’t teach charlie sheen how to pick up hookers… or blow his own head clean off! an AWESOME problematic age gap meet-cute between charlie sheen and clint eastwood- huh?? who said that? it’s got some banger set pieces, donut abuse, and a beautiful harley-davidson! i wish the soundtrack would make more of an appearance and eastwood could stand to do a couple retakes, aside from that, it’s gravy! don’t hate me, but i actually like that lime green lotus esprit

Sheen and Eastwood deliver a so-so buddy cop action comedy. The script is a real mess, though. What made this entertaining was seeing practical action sequences where multiple high-end cars get smashed apart, or buildings explode into flames. Compared to other buddy cop movies of this era, this pales in comparison to the likes of Lethal Weapon, etc. Raul Julia is an ethnically ambiguous guy who seemed like he was supposed to be German, and is a crime lord in…

It seems the only way Clint was able to get something as ambiguous and un-commercial as White Hunter, Black Heart made was if he paid the studio a little favor in return, and they were looking to cash in on the maximalist action movie craze with Clint at the helm. Thus, we got The Rookie, a buddy-cop potboiler written by Boaz Yakin and, friend and collaborator with Sam Raimi, Scott Spiegel, whose “rascal newbie cop (played by Hollywood bad boy…

Without Eastwood, Sheen and Julia this would be a dud. But their charisma carries this and make it enjoyable. Not to the point I’d bother watching it again, but certainly ok. Much better than I’d feared!

Giving this a half-star bump because this was Eastwood’s “one for them” in exchange for bankrolling White Hunter, Black Heart. But Eastwood’s heart wasn’t in this and it shows. Other than his baseline competence and a handful of visually arresting moments, this doesn’t have a lot going for it.

CLINT EASTWOOD RANKED A lifeless buddy cop movie with a zero-chemistry onscreen duo. All the crazy car crashes and explosions can’t make up for the abysmal script and Charlie Sheen’s phoned-in performance.

I love Clint, and I respect him for only agreeing to make this under duress to secure financing for ‘ White Hunter, Black Heart,’ but you can tell from the first scene it wasn’t a project he put his soul into. Still, he’s physically incapable of directing a bad film, so it’s perfectly servicable. But that’s not to say it isn’t insane. Because it is bizarre, like here’s a list of things that genuinely happen, Clint gets reverse raped, Charlie Sheen…

6.7/10 Some of the acting is uneven, though Raul Julia plays a pretty good bad guy. There is some humor, and a good amount of action. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Clint Eastwood swear as much as he does in this one.

Raul Julia has so much fun in these roles, man that guy was fun to watch! While this movie is pretty run of the mill buddy cop action flick, I enjoy it a lot. There are a lot of good action sequences and the rapport between Eastwood and Sheen is enjoyable. They got banter! Also popping up are Tom Skerritt, Lara Flynn Boyle, and even my man Xander Berkeley as a henchman, go figure! For what this flick is, it’s a good viewing with some fun parts and actors.

Some good dumb action, not much else to say. With the presence of 1990 Lara Flynn Boyle I couldn’t help but imagine this movie with Kyle MacLachlan in the Charlie Sheen role. Raul Julia gives such an effortless performance. Part of that is that he doesn’t seem to be trying to do a German accent but the other part is that he has such a fantastic natural presence. There’s nothing revelatory about this one, it’s just a fun buddy cop film.

Didn’t know Gomez Adams was running an underground automotive crime-ring. Alright someone give Charlie his cocaine, he’s so boring in this. This is mostly just another Dirty Harry movie with a sleepy Sheen hanging off the back. Also Donna Hayward is there too! The one who I think stole Sheen’s cocaine is Pepe Serna (Not to be confused with Pepe Sylvia) He puts in an incredibly performance in his few minutes of screen time, with the famous quote: “Don’t think of it as a case. It’s a fucking adventure!”.

One of many spiritual sequels to Dirty Harry, not counting its actual sequels, but extra special for how flagrantly vigilante justice is passed down like homicidal wisdom, so that a rookie must learn how to extrajudicial murder (shoot a woman point blank in the head), especially in public in front of crowds of people (at a busy airport), in order to be a better and better cop. Clint’s Lethal Weapon, maybe? Some ludicrous action, shot soberly, and some real toxic masculinity, captured quite handsomely.

Actually quite enjoyed the chemistry between the cast – in that none of them liked each other and were all almost in friction with each other…it worked well. 2 hours for this kind of film really gives it legs to move and lungs to breath and it felt like the end was coming several times but it just kept pushing. Posh white kid cop sets bartender on fire by spitting alcohol on him then destroys entire bar. ♥️ The whole thing has been copied many times and for Hollywood this feels fucked up in places where they would usually be clean/sterile

A solid Eastwood cop action flick. Not the best Eastwood action flick I’ve seen but as far as Eastwood action flicks go, this is a pretty fun one. Pretty crazy and goofy and a product of its time but it’s got Eastwood and Sheen kind of at the height of their powers. Don’t know if I’d put it up there with Lethal Weapon but Charlie Sheen rides a motorcycle through a door so it’s got that. Even a simple movie…

K
Enjoyable enough. Eastwood and Sheen actually have pretty decent chemistry in this. There’s quite a bit of substance, but unfortunately, said substance just isn’t as gripping as the inner workings of something like, say Friedkin’s dark and moody 1980 cop drama ‘Cruising’. This almost seems like it should have been the final vehicle for ‘Dirty Harry’ rather than ‘The Dead Pool’. The action is pretty solid. It seems to adhere to the precedent that had recently been set by ‘Die Hard’. This is probably Charlie Sheen’s best acting outside of ‘Platoon’. The score is pretty wack though. What was up with that?

The Rookie (1990): It’s Not Just Maximalism, It’s a Fucking Adventure! It was quite a dad-fernoon today with a bonkers new entry in my dad movie pantheon: Clint Eastwood’s The Rookie (1990). Eastwood goes all-in on the maximalist action trend of the late ’80s/early ’90s with The Rookie (1990), a movie whose least absurd detail is that Raúl Juliá plays a German guy at the head of an L.A. auto theft ring. This is not your typical buddy cop movie this one is pretty odd .. It goes into some places I did not expect too. This Blu-ray was very dark .. Without a doubt,Clint Eastwood’s worst movie as even the likes of Charlie Sheen,Rual Julia and Sonia Braga(as German villains[!!!!]),(the late) Scott Speigel, and a stellar supporting name cast can save nor salvage this poorly written and incredibly stale actioner that really needed a much better constructed and more intriguing storyline. Boaz Yakin was a screenwriter on the Dolph Lundgren Punisher, and it looks sedate compared to this Clint Eastwood/Charlie Sheen buddy cop movie he cowrote the following year. This is basically a Dirty Harry movie if everyone in the movie acted like Dirty Harry. Achieves a level of dick-swinging vulgarity that’s so over-torqued and so casually fascistic that you find yourself admiring the effort of it all. In its own gross-out way, The Rookie is a premonition of the adrenal excesses of Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II, although Eastwood’s measured cutting means the frantic action set pieces are a bit more cohesive than the synapse-frying montages favoured by Bayhem. The movie is a fascinating time capsule of a particular cultural moment in Hollywood studio filmmaking, not…

From the director of The Bridges of Madison County 🥴 There are a few notable doozies I still haven’t seen yet….but this could be Eastwood’s trashiest work (complimentary). And his last onscreen outing as the archetype he helped build with Harry Callahan. Torch passed to Charlie Sheen 🫡 Way too long, but rest assured that the finale features a chase sequence that will make you laugh. Raul Julia joins Jeremy Irons in my pantheon of outrageous screen Germans. Found my way to this via the Flop House boys recommending the Nitehawk’s Ridiculous Sublime series. Will be mining this vein for more watches.

Rough edged, soaked with sweat, gets lodged in the throat. The Rookie is bursting with the aggro-masculinity and a meanness that you can track in other 80s/90s cop films like Lumet’s Q&A. Clint’s direction seems dispassionate (White Hunter, Black Heart is this same year, I imagine that’s where that energy and passion went) and would be more entertaining if it wasn’t so angry.

Both Eastwood and Sheen’s characters would have hated when bodycams became a thing.

I don’t know if I’ll ever understand why I have a soft spot for this movie.

This may be the only truly bad movie Clint Eastwood ever directed. I’ve seen most of the movies Clint Eastwood directed and, looking at the ones I haven’t seen, I can confidently say that this is the worst piece of dog sick that he ever put out. It borders on unwatchable. He directed two movies in 1990: White Hunter, Black Heart (a fascinating, thinly veiled portrait of John Huston that sees Clint putting in one of the most interesting performances of his career) and The Rookie (a turd). What a year.

incredible. clint’s mctiernan film/lethal weapon. i wasn’t prepared for just how much this commits to its action sequences. very crisp and exciting. there’s some hand-held during the hand to hand fights that’s so well done.

Clint Eastwood | A Life in Film 2026 Having retired the Harry Callahan character two years prior, Clint Eastwood’s LAPD crime action thriller looks to christen Charlie Sheen as the next action star, though Sheen isn’t quite up to the task as a rookie detective forced upon Eastwood’s gruff veteran officer with a penchant for getting his partners killed in the line of duty, going up against Raul Julia’s drug lord in an action film big on effects but low on narrative sustenance. Clint Eastwood ranked – actor Clint Eastwood ranked – director Clint Eastwood ranked – a life in film

Clint Eastwood directs this, what could have easily been another ‘Dirty Harry’ entry, but keeps it out of that world. This time he’s Nick Polovski, a grizzled veteran of the LAPD who is investigating illegal chop-shops across the southland and stumbles upon one that does drug smuggling on the side. He’s joined by a green partner, David (Charlie Sheen) who stumbles through, but is driven by a dark past. A typical, by the numbers buddy cop movie, but still pretty entertaining.

Great story, action, acting, and cast. Charlie sheen and Clint Eastwood is a great duo.

This is the last film Clint Eastwood directed before Unforgiven, pairing him with Charlie Sheen as an odd-couple pair of cops trying to take down a criminal played by Raúl Juliá. Going in, I wondered why I’d heard so little about this movie, especially since it came out during the peak of the buddy-cop action boom. After watching it, I think I understand why. It’s not a bad movie by any means—it just doesn’t do much that audiences hadn’t already…

It has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I will re-watch it at some point. Anyway, just a few years before making one of his masterpieces and finally becoming one of the greatest directors alive, Clint Eastwood directed this decent but rather pedestrian action flick with Charlie Sheen. I mean, seriously, can you imagine a movie released today directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Eastwood himself and Charlie Sheen?!? It would be pretty weird… Back then,…

This brutally hyperbolic cop thriller can’t seem to stay on track, and that’s what’s intermittently amusing about it. The Rookie is like a series of garish exploitation set pieces jammed into the shape of a buddy movie. As the veteran cop who specializes in catching auto thieves (hey, anything is better than the usual homicide expert), Clint Eastwood indulges his taste for lurid masochism. In one of the funniest scenes, he is tied up in a chair, and the villain’s…

Clint Eastwood’s new film, “The Rookie,” plays like an anthology of stuff that has worked before in action pictures. It’s jammed with material and the budget was obviously large, but somehow not much pays off. It’s all there on the screen, but lifeless. The title alerts us to the possibility that this will not be a work of dazzling originality. How many other movies have used the same premise, about a veteran cop whose partner is killed, and who then…
