This could be so much better if there wasn’t any romance: astaire and hepburn don’t share any chemistry, the romance itself is rushed, doesn’t make sense and honestly isn’t romantic in the slightest, and it’s not what the film should be about. The first portion of this film is absolutely fantastic. Amazing music numbers and choreography, the songs are good, and the colours! the cinematography! everything about it is perfect and unique. However, the last half of the film really drags it down and lowers its charm. It becomes less about the music, the story, and Jo Stockton, and more about the non existent romance and jealousy between audrey hepburn and a man 30 years older than her. They would’ve been much better off as friends, it felt like that’s practically all they were anyway.

This is how you use color. The pink doors give the room depth. The bright green and yellow in the bookstore pops and lets you see Audrey Hepburn dance, move, in spite of her costume’s affinity for the background. The hazy smoke of the cafe obscures the blues and blacks of the room. The umbrella as Fred Astaire’s dance partner makes him so visible. This is how you wield color to control the audience’s attention, to paint your scenery, to give your setting life. As spectacle, this film is perfect. As any kind of social commentary, it’s horrible, of course. Makeover movie with Audrey Hepburn as the target (why the fuck would anyone think her face is funny?!?!) is just silly, and about anyone it would be offensive. The regressive gender bullshit, the patronizing way Astaire treats her, it’s unforgivable, but at least she gets to smash a sexist dude over the head with a vase.

I’m tired of them all acting like Audrey Hepburn is this frumpy, unconventional looking girl as if she isn’t one of the most beautiful women of all time. Perfect film honestly. Great gowns, beautiful gowns. Amazing colors. One of the most fun and enjoyable stories. I enjoyed this so much, it was so charming and simple and adorable! The songs weren’t too overbearing, they were just precious enough to be endearing without being over the top. The story was gradual…

“I’m not mad. I’m hurt, and disappointed…and mad.” One of cinema’s earliest examples of pretending an absurdly beautiful woman is not absurdly beautiful, then presenting her absurd beauty as a great revelation. Hepburn enchants. The scene in the club is the greatest dancing of all time. The whole film overflows with beauty, charm, joy…and Paris! So much Paris. Fred Astaire…eh. The romance angle is a drag.

Really colorful visuals and characters. I was living for the New York magazine office and “Think Pink.” But the whole romance lacked chemistry. It was so cool to see the shots of New York and Paris in the 50s.

“I came here to talk with a philosopher but you’re talking like a man” It’ll be polarizing ideologies when the men of its time are the very force behind them.Besides shushing Audrey Hepburn this much should be considered a crime anyways.

I like it, it’s very stylish and has some great shots. But like similar films from this period the romance is just bad and forced. There is just nothing to show how they fell in love after he kinda harasses her (although it’s not bad compared to the other guy and I like how she is able to stand up for herself). While watching I was thinking it’s like if in Devil Wears Prada, there was romance between Stanley Tucci and Anne Hathaway 😭. Better as platonic friends. At least by the end it is wholesome enough to slightly make up for it.

wow. talk about a strong start start. titles by richard avedon and an incredible first couple set pieces… one thousand percent the kind of classic studio hollywood movie i love, even beyond all its flaws: namely that fred astaire is 30 yrs older than audrey and the two have negative zero chemistry together… but still, amazing AMAZING use of color. and awesome dance sequences, (like audrey in the beatnik club), that were extremely impressive

i have multiple issues with this movie, first of all the ugliness of the male lead is UNFORGIVABLE; secondly i couldn’t connect with the characters, they’re all insufferable and selfish; finally i can’t say if what i witnessed was french (actually, parisian) bashing or just poor humor? welp, mystery

Funny face, flimsy film. It honestly took me halfway through the film to realize that Hepburn and Astaire were meant to be romantically linked. Ew. But man alive, I cannot resist the colours and Audrey Hepburn as I was tickled pink from the very opening.

This film truly has everything. The beatneck scene, insane. The dark room scene, changed my perception of love. Audrey Hepburn, in love with Fred Astaire, how did he pull. Empathicalism, a big plot point for some reason. Truly ahead of its time.

The sets, costumes, and Audrey Hepburn are all beautiful but the rest didnt impress me that much and the romance is poor. Kay Thompson steals the show a couple of times and Fred Astaire has far more chemistry with her as well as appropriate age pairing in their dance number towards the end

Puis,…

I came here to talk with a philosopher. But you’re talking like a man! It was my first Audrey Hepburn film, and my first Fred Astaire film. I don’t know them and I don’t really know their work, but let me tell you, it was probably not their best film. Total lack of chemistry, for a stupid romance, with 30 years apart, I was just weirded out. Ew. However, I’d love to see them in other films, and not together,…

It is such a charming little time capsule. Audrey Hepburn is absolutely adorable, and the Paris setting, fashion and musical numbers make the whole film feel like a beautiful dream. I especially loved the playful chemistry between Hepburn and Fred Astaire, even if the age difference feels a little strange watching it today. The story itself is pretty thin and some of the romance feels rushed, but honestly, I wasn’t watching this for a complicated plot. I was there for Audrey, the clothes, the dancing and the ridiculously pretty Parisian atmosphere, and it delivered all of that.

this film would have so much potential if it focused more on Jo’s personality that we see, at the beginning, in the bookshop. she loses some of her spark once she enters the fashion world, and her romance with Dick has zero chemistry. however, it’s such a beautiful piece of work: the scenery, colors, musical moments, and Audrey Hepburn’s incredible performance.

The romance aspect of the plot was very strange and unnecessary… however, there were beautiful gowns 😃 (iykyk)! Unfortunately, this film didn’t make me feel much of anything else, though.

On a tear of Audrey Hepburn films, and hitting all the classics. I again really enjoyed this. This was my first Audrey Hepburn film in technicolour and you can tell that since they were paying for colour that they were going to make the most of it. I loved it – so retro! This is a musical and I don’t mind that as long as it’s good, which this was! It was s’wonderful and s’marvelous. In particular, the dancing was…

The ’50s learn basic empathy! Lovely movie, musical but not jarring or long. Fun to see Astaire and Hepburn in Paris. And the Quality President was also a well-done character. My one qualm was the inherent relation to “spirituality” with Black culture inspired “voodoo”…but that’s the ’50s, I suppose.

Although I love the themes and the music, I think the romance was a bit rushed. The most unrealistic thing about this movie is that Audrey Hepburn has a ‘funny face’.. I- I’m shocked and absolutely horrified. Also, the concept of the smart girls doesn’t care about fashion always bothered me. This is a very wrong stereotype, at that. Not every girl is a science girl or a book girl or a fashion girl only, in that; she doesn’t have…

First, the negative: The musical numbers are just bad. None of them are catchy or memorable and they don’t progress the story in any meaningful way besides “Funny Face.” It would be a better movie if it stopped trying to be a mid musical and actually fleshed out the script. The romance is not believable. Fred Astaire is ancient here, and I am supposed to believe Audrey Hepburn falls in love with him after his bookstore antics with just a…

A classic, for sure. The main character is an icon, the outfits, the whole places and cast, just amazing. But its literally a musical movie so its not my cup of tea. I take music films tedious and trashy unless i know the musics, so i don’t like it.

“Duval, please! I can’t hear myself think, and I’m trying to think in French!” Besides the iconic “Think Pink” musical number being apart of my entire personality, Funny Face is such a wonderful rom-com with amazing costumes made by the iconic Edith Head and provided by Givenchy. It’s my 2nd fave Audrey Hepburn role & loved how charming Fred Astaire was in. I still don’t know why Audrey keeps getting paired with men who are very much older than her, but…

The closest thing this movie has to a plot is that Audrey Hepburn is too funny looking to be a model, and then she’s a model. It’s a string of musical numbers barely held together by a series of cliches. Hepburn is all it really has going for it.

Bonjour, Paris!

one of my favorites, besides the fact that Audrey is my favorite, I love her running around a technicolor Paris in beautiful clothes, singing, dancing and being impossibly charming, this movie was practically made for me. I just had to pretend the romance was about the magic of 1950s cinema and not Fred Astaire as the romantic fantasy, however… very 1957 of them
