It’s necessary to preface this with the fact that I am (or, was) a huge Aronofsky fan. He’s ingenious, and sophisticated and he has this distinct style to his films. Plus, his symbolism and metaphors have always struck a perfectly balanced note in the past. Having loved Black Swan and The Fountain, I’ve been super stoked for mother!. It all seemed right: the concept, the cast, the posters. Everything. The spectacle leading up to its various premieres added to my excitement. Can be a bit confusing on the first watch but the overall deeper meaning of the film is really interesting. The storyline and the violence were well balanced. The only part I didn’t really enjoy was THAT scene towards the end.

It just got more ridiculous and out of hand that I was pissed to the point of wishing death on everyone in that house (Except JLaw). Yeah it’s poetic and I wish I could give it a better rating but I didn’t enjoy watching this AT ALL!! Oh my god I’m mad.

Pretentious drivel offering not much more than a bare-faced and simple metaphor within a feature-length narrative that you could have honestly found better executed in a short film, not two hours. A complete exercise in style over substance, and not even a fun one at that. Excruciating watch, Darren Aronofsky. In his defence though, I liked it when the film decided to turn into Children of Men for five minutes, because it reminded me of a good film.

This movie was beyond disgusting and disturbing. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but as the movie went on and on it made it much harder to do so. This movie is one giant metaphor, and as cool as it is, it is very hard to justify this 2 hour mess. The first half was okay, was really looking forward to seeing how it played out, but it was a disaster. The metaphor was cool and really saves this film, but it was very hard to sit though, very vile, very disturbing.
