It’s been seven years since I last watched Seraphim Falls, an underseen but rather impressive revisionist western from back in 2006. Featuring Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan in the leading roles, this is basically a manhunt that starts in the Nevada Mountains before trekking South as Neeson and his hired help attempt to run down a former Union officer for an as yet undisclosed reason. It’s unforgiving, brutal and violent in equal measure, and a truly compelling watch, but like most modern day westerns it struggled to find an audience. Both Brosnan and Neeson are excellent in their respective roles, and with a solid supporting cast that includes the likes of Michael Wincott, Xander Berkeley, and cameos from Anjelica Huston,…

In which Pierce Brosnan warms his freezing hands by sticking them into the steaming entrails of a fresh corpse…and the frontier violence doesn’t get any nicer than that. Really surprised by how little I see Seraphim Falls mentioned among modern westerns. Neeson just before going full old man action, Brosnan in his post-Bond prime, a feature-length vengeful pursuit across the Wild West from snowy mountains to grueling desert with First Blood-intense survival action and cat-&-mouse ruthlessness usually involving a giant Bowie knife. I probably know why it isn’t talked about much; the final act taking the men’s perpetual cycle of violence into the realm of allegorical purgatory likely ends this on a sour note for many. With this very overdue rewatch, I appreciated the suddenly unmoored thematic boldness.

This film is DEEPLY dull. I don’t recommend it to any but the staunchest fan of westerns. How does one F up a film with such a great cast???

DuBFaL – Review zu Film Nr. 3 “Seraphim Falls – Gnadenlose Jagd” Vorgaben und ausgewählt von: ClinTarantino Dekade: Egal Genre: Western Vorschläge: Geronimo: An American Legend (Andy Fell) Guardian of the Wilderness (Zero Ena) Seraphim Falls (drwar5ong) Bandidos (Rico) True Grit (Corie) The Ridiculous 6 (Oneepiexe) Ein Mann, gejagt und auf der Flucht. Vier Männer sind hinter ihm her. What starts like a mean chase-western slowly loses steam as it goes along until it ends on a quasi-supernatural sentimental wet fart. What a bummer. Pierce Brosnan grunting and belching “AHHH!” is always funny.

This is the best action movie that happens to be a western that I’ve seen in years. It’s a simple plot done very imaginatively. It contains scenes that I’ve never seen before. The two leads are fantastic (Liam Neeson’s revenge-driven tough guy, and Pierce Brosnan’s grizzled survivor). But it’s the smaller roles that truly amazed me. Michael Wincott’s gravelly voiced thug, Tom Noonan’s preacher, Wes Studi’s mysterious Indian, Angelica Houston’s desert devil, Ed Lauter’s tracker, and Angie Harmon’s character all are pitch-perfect. Absolutely gorgeous cinematography from snow covered mountains to rolling plains to stark deserts. Interesting how the movie begins with water being the element that will kill you, and by the end in the desert heat water is the…

I really enjoyed this revisionist revenge western that really hits the ground running and slowly lets you pick up the pieces as it steamrolls along so much grueling territory with the propensity of these two men(The great Liam Neeson and equally talented Pierce Brosnan) to go on is mythical and then it truly becomes more so at the end but I do have to say it keeps building to that next level that you are either on board or shut that train down luckily I am in the former category. I have to say thanks to Andy Summers for turning me on to this gritty little film cause I easily would have dismissed it and that would have been a real loss so thanks Andy!

This is a hidden gem to say the least. I really enjoyed it up until the ending which I found to be kind of lackluster. Other than that… very underrated film especially for a more “modern” western.

Liam and Pierce in a pretty good chase Western.

Fantastic movie made even better by a superb cast. Some great scenes that really stay with you. Brosnan and Neeson make really good adversaries. Excellent story and extremely well made. Would recommend.

who dies? who dies first? when do they die? do they die? claustrophobic, unrelenting, suffocating tale of vengeance & retribution, looooong before, & way more affecting for me than Revenant. stunning cinematography. wince-inducing injuries, moving performances from Brosnan & Neeson, and twists I never saw coming, that still intrigue & arrest me. superb cinema.

Starts off really good. A man on the run from bounty hunters and you don’t know why. When he gets off the mountain about halfway through it becomes a bit of a mess. At the end you find out why the bounty Hunter is hunting him.

Kind of falls apart in the end, but respectable effort nonetheless. Really strong start. Story takes this otherwordly twist midway through, motive ”twist” you can see miles away. Starring mythical actors like post Bond Brosnan, pre Taken Neeson, Tom Noonan and his doppelganger, Wes Studi and Anjelica Huston.

I believe this was my second watch of Seraphim Falls, possibly my third. Despite two big names in the lead roles, there is not a lot of acting happening in this film. Granted, it’s a chase film, but the viewer learns very little about any of the characters, and there is little dialog for long stretches. The backstory dating back to the end of the American Civil War didn’t really make sense. I feel like the scenery could have been…

Daily Decade Films | A Letterboxd History 2026 Despite the allure of Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan in this cross-country story of revenge, David Von Ancken’s Western is quite a middling affair with a simplistic story hinging a narrative on, offering some strong action as Neeson’s pursuit of Brosnan’s disgraced Union soldier takes them further into the wilderness as their hatred consumes them.

“We gotta make this movie morally gray, so let’s make people feel bad for one of the worst humans on the planet by having Union soldiers BURN HIS ENTIRE FAMILY ALIVE IN FRONT OF HIM because they’re the real monsters.” Holy shit. Watched bits and pieces of this while moving to and from the room, most notably the entire last quarter of the film. Didn’t know it was gonna get camp, I would’ve paid more attention. It’s unbelievable how much better Pierce Brosnan looks with facial hair.

Kurze Einleitung per schöner Naturaufnahmen, aber dann geht’s gleich los. Peng!

I actually really enjoyed this. It’s slower but it shows the brutality of the West. Brosnan was great here and Neeson was as good as he can be as an Irish in a western. Love the final 10min

“For they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” One of those westerns that gets better with each rewatch. Gorgeous cinematography. Great performances by Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. The first half is incredibly intense and exciting. I’ve had mixed feelings in the past about the second half of the film, especially the last twenty minutes, but I’ve grown to enjoy it and the finale. A very well-made western.

Ending woulda had me have this higher but a solid revenge western . Brosnan was going through it!! The director only made one movie and honestly , it’s not a bad movie to have as your only picture lol.

The kind of slow burn that’s reminiscent of any classic western. Relentless drive. Grit and determination. Unquenchable thirst, both figuratively and literally. Unwavering perseverance. Beautiful scenery. Religious allegories and mythical symbolism. Severe deep rooted agony. Cunning. A crazy preacher. Railroad workers. The whole shabang! My kind of movie. Shout-out to the great Liam McPoyle from Always Sunny.

Overall, I think the scene management was quite good. I really liked the scenario, except for the ending. The core message, ‘the things you have taken will be taken from you’ ,is incredibly powerful. In my opinion, Gideon was delivering a final, symbolic message by stabbing his knife into the ground in the last scene. Of course, Liam Neeson’s performance significantly elevated the overall quality of the movie.

Decent little cat-and-mouse western. I thoroughly enjoyed this film! Great themes of forgiveness as well; both men at the end decide to trade their own lives (or rather, the things they need to sustain their lives) in order to enact revenge and take the other’s life. I quite like the ending. Would definitely recommend this one! Could’ve done with a better score, be it orchestral or stereotypically Western. A bit more excitement in the soundtrack could’ve improved this film tenfold.

For all the talent, Seraphim falls really short of being a good chase/revenge western. Mixed tones of death, madness and forgiveness tank the last 15 minutes.

Revenge is a dish best served cold… and Liam Neeson takes that literally as he chases Pierce Brosnan through snow covered mountains for the expressed purpose of making him no longer alive. The story has two rivals from opposite sides of the civil war going up against each other out in the wilderness. The war itself is done and over, but when you hate someone enough, stalking them to the ends of the Earth, while probably unhealthy, can have it’s…

The Last of Us Part II

After the end of the American Civil War, a former Confederate colonel hunts down a former Yankee officer with whom he has a grudge. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a modern Western and I gotta say, this was a good one. The ambiguity of who is good and who is bad really plays well since, in most Westerns, that fact is pretty clear. Liam Neeson and Pearce Brosnan play perfect foils of each other and the desperation of their missions is mirrored in the unrelenting frontier landscape. I really enjoyed this one.

A really western. It maybe slow in parts but it does bring up some great scenes around survival and conflict. Both Brosnan and Neesam play their parts extremely good. Some might get confused around the surreal parts near the ending of the film. It does make you think about both parties journey into hell. Definitely a western to watch.

I’m not a huge fan of just being thrown into a film with no insight on any of the characters or backstories, as it makes it difficult to sympathise with anyone. Seraphim Falls opens mid-chase with Brosnan, a quiet man hardened by survivalist desperation, and Neeson, who’s steady patience follows behind. The film thrives on restraint: long stretches of silence as both head towards an inevitable confrontation, broken up by moments of brutal violence without turning to spectacle. As it goes on, a subtle surreal tone creeps in, turning a simple revenge tale into something more symbolic. It feels appropriate, echoing narratives like The Revenant and The Last of Us Part…

A pretty good dad-core western manhunt thriller. I admired how they just throw you into the middle of the story, and let the audience decide where your loyalties lie. I definitely picked up on ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales’ vibes this was giving off. I didn’t hate the resolution, but it does lose steam.

Very underrated western. The ending is very symbolic and unique but I didn’t mind it.

Really solid cat-and-mouse western thriller. Love the lack of dialogue early, building instant tension before the chase kicks off. Pierce Brosnan is fantastic, and the visuals are terrific. A slightly uneven final act that, thankfully, does not fully detract from the success of earlier moments.

Way better than I expected, a very underrated modern Western that I’m surprised isn’t discussed more. It starts off as a gritty survival movie in the snow and ends with a surreal and cerebral duel in the desert, and it totally earns that entire journey. Men will give up their food, their water, their horses, their gold, and their humanity, all in a desperate attempt to enact more violence and revenge; but where will that leave us other than burning…

What an incredible way to depict the power struggles of unlawful men and the power of forgiveness. An inspo film when you’re stuck in dire straits. The ill part is they both fought for their country. One killed because his country told him to, the other out of vengeance. Neither got what they wanted, only what they needed.

Starts good, with several great actions scenes, but unfortunately it gradually falls apart after that. To preface, as a huge fan of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, I thought I was about to have a stroke when I realized that this movie got both McPoyles (Jimi Simpson and Nate Mooney) within it, sharing the scene and all, the gift of going in blindly, never let me down once. The movie starts off interestingly, you’re trying to figure out why are they after this man, played by Pierce Brosnan and what has he done. You get the same feel like in the movie The Revenant, Carver (Liam Neeson) is determined to catch him and also because of an obvious scene towards the end. This is a great western, not an old-fashioned shooter, but a great story of a man seeking revenge and someone else trying to stay one step ahead. It’s a solid, bold movie that sometimes makes you feel a little nervous but is still fun. Don’t expect too much action because there’s not much of all of them, but the scenery and soundtrack are beautiful. For me, Pierce Brosnan is the main focus in the film and the one who advances…
- Synopsis
- The Civil War has ended, but Colonel Morsman Carver is on one final mission – to kill Gideon, no matter what it takes. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit takes the two men through frigid snow-capped mountains and arid deserts, far from the comforts and codes of civilisation, into the bloodiest recesses of their own souls.
