If not the worst Best Picture winner, then certainly one of the most baffling. I get that its subjects (the effects of aging, the long-term relationship between an employee and their employer) are rarely depicted in Hollywood movies; perhaps that novelty was enough to make it seem special. But it’s ultimately just a character study, and not a particularly rich one. 25 years passes, but the film doesn’t capture the gradual evolution of its setting or its people. In one scene, Dan Aykroyd looks like himself circa 1989 and in the next he’s got a big gray wig on. Forget about Do the Right Thing; this isn’t even on the level of the other four films that were nominated for Best Picture in 1989.

DISCLAIMER: My following thoughts are in regards to one aspect in particular. I’m not claiming you must love this movie. You are in your full right to don’t like this. Again, this are my thoughts, just an opinon As I type these words I can’t help but to feel angry. Not angry at this movie, but angry at everyone who for years fooled me to believe one thing that’s not true. To sell me this idea that this is a… no, is the mother of all the white savior movies. From what I’ve got throughout the years, I believe in many ways the main reason for this comes from the fact plenty of people are upset that the Academy chose…

Is this the safest movie ever made? Driving Miss Daisy doesn’t even attempt to take a risk. It mentions racism but never really touches the topic. The film making is extra bland. The music is mixed super loud probably to keep you from falling asleep. It’s vanilla as hell but it’s pleasant, and surprisingly I didn’t hate watching it.

Racist lady hires uber. Not a lot happens, it is a nice movie but it was bland. I wish there was more on how miss Daisy could have changed throughout the film. So many parts seemed like they were the stepping stones for her to stand up to someone racist, or give hoke more respect and human decency. But then it just, didn’t happen. Never invited him to eat with her, never invited him to the MLK event, didn’t stand…

İnsanlar bu filmi best picture award qazanıb deyə linç edirlər. Amma mənim dünyamda bu film həqiqətən səhnələriylə düşüncələrimi,dağınıq zehnimi yenilədi. Freshlənmiş kimi hiss edirəm. Çəkiliş tərzi,rəngarənglik, soft tonlar hər biri möhtəşəm idi. Toxunaqlı bir dostluq hekayəsi deyildi amma həm də elə idi. Minnətdaram ki ikisindən birinin ölümünü görmədən bitirdilər sonluğu bu məni ciddən sevindirən detal idi.

Visually, there’s a lot to admire in terms of scenery and cinematography, and the coloring is great as well, but thematically, it makes for an uncomfortable and rather frustrating watch. It’s heavily dated, and in no way, shape or form whatsoever deserving of the Best Picture Oscar, especially in comparisons to movies like Do the Right Thing, and while some of the performances were pretty good, I can’t really say I’d be inclined to watch it again any time soon… 5/10

English A delicate, intelligent, and deeply human film. The relationship between Daisy and Hoke allows the movie to explore racism, aging, friendship, and dignity with remarkable sensitivity. Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman are outstanding. A movie that is genuinely moving without becoming excessive.

Excruciatingly safe Academy darling that yet again sees a spiteful protagonist hammered into shape by the unyielding compassion of an oppressed minority. Tandy is pretty insufferable as the titular old woman here so the movie relies entirely on some classic Morgan Freeman charm to remain watchable. It’s genuinely unfathomable to me that something as antiquated as this could have won in the same year that the unnominated Do the Right Thing was released.

My mother is a little… high strung. Second viewing today; this was a rewatch on the big screen at The Revival House Perth on 35mm film. The print was in good nick with very few blemishes and only minor fading, and it was a fun revisiting the film with a large, laughing audience, even if I only laughed myself on occasion. The appeal of the film (at least to me) in any case is rather the gradual bonding and growing…

A pretty simple movie that is helped by the great chemistry Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy have. Their relationship carries the whole movie, and watching them slowly become friends is pretty solid. Now, I’m pretty shocked this won Best Picture because I don’t think there’s really anything special about it. It’s just one of those easy, simple movies that usually doesn’t get many awards. Seeing the competition it was up against, I’m even more shocked it won. It’s a good movie that’s worth the watch, but I wouldn’t call it a critical masterpiece.

Honestly not a terrible film – though not exactly what I would consider a ‘best picture winner’. The acting from both Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy was pretty great, and it did, at moments, give me the feels. I have considered many times whether or not I should create a best picture winners ranking list, but then I remembered that I would have to actually watch them – yeah not so keen on that right now…

“Driving Miss Daisy to a Care Home”👵🏼 The best way to win an Oscar is make a 3 hour movie in a different county or be extremely racist and this was the latter. Too much for me to handle and just a silly story. Good acting but just a pointless movie. I don’t know how it even won.

When Harry Met Sally and Do the Right Thing were the victims of a highway robbery. The perpetrators in question? Morgan Freeman saying “Miss Daisy” at least 90 times in 90 minutes and an 80 year old Jessica Tandy in, get this, old age makeup. Batman, Indiana Jones, and Indiana Jones’s father are hot on their tale… and have been for nearly 40 years. Looks like poor Best Picture Oscar circa 1990 will never return to either of its rightful owners. A crying shame.

Maybe I’m not doing my due diligence as an Enlightened White Gen-Zer by giving this movie a passing grade, but my horizons can only be so broad at any given time. Who knows, maybe once I get to all those Angela Davis books on my reading list I’ll have more intense feelings about what is possibly the most timid movie about racism that anyone has ever made. The film’s great strength, at least to me, is just how good it…

Drinking game idea: Take a shot everytime Hoke says “Yes’m.” This winning Best Picture over Dead Poets Society is probably the worst thing that could have possibly happened to this film. I don’t believe there is any reason to hate on this film, though. It’s a little dated but its heartwarming story deserves to be seen at least once. Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman compliment each other nicely as Daisy and Hoke, respectively. The former’s character development is really striking…

Good performances, but it keeps turning away from every opportunity to show something uncomfortable. Racism and anti-Semitism are alluded to, but kept firmly off screen; the story we see is pared down to its gentlest and most sentimental form. There’s something potentially evocative in the final image of Hoke feeding Daisy a piece of Thanksgiving pie (the complexity of the American Dream, and how time can both deteriorate and heal), but I don’t think the movie earns it.

Of the Oscar winners with a racial agenda on the docket, the sanguine, sapient ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ isn’t the most presumptuous and benighted. No one can’t fault the performances of Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. They’re unimpeachable as the curmudgeonly widow and her acquiescing chauffeur. In fact, the friendship between the two is winsome. As a chamber piece inside and around Hoke’s (Freeman) town car, Alfred Uhry forges an ironclad screenplay of scintillating dialogue in which their ideologies clash in…

Came to this one more from loving Beresford’s “Tender Mercies” (and his previous Aussie movies “Puberty Blues” and “Money Movers”) than from a perverse desire to watch the Evil Best Picture Winner that shut out the best film of the year (and decade), “Do the Right Thing.” But is this even the worst best picture winner? I’d say “Crash” & “Green Book” are worse as racially-charged winners go, and I have a strong distaste for “A Beautiful Mind” and “Birdman.” Sure,…

[WATCHING EVERY OSCAR BEST PICTURE IN A YEAR 62 OUT OF 98] We did it boys. We ended racism. Glad that’s all sorted and nobody needs to make this exact film again in 30 years time. Nahhh it’s not actually as patronising as I thought it might be – it offers jjjjjjust enough subtley for racial prejudice to clearly be There while still being one factor of the characters’ burgeoning, multi-faceted friendship, that is until it completely shits the bed…

Didn’t watch the first 15 mins because I was finishing the shining and my mom kept trying to explain the plot as a sweet friendship movie about a little old lady and my brother kept cutting in and being like “the old lady is a racist btw” and mom was like “she is not racist!”. two very good performances in a not very good movie. i love that jessica tandy won for a late in life performance but i wish it was for a better movie. morgan freeman is excellent as always but again, i wish he had better material. fun bit performance from patti lupone, and the idea of her being a republican national committeewoman is very funny to me. incredible accent work from jessica tandy, would never know she was british. not much to say, i don’t think i’m eager to rewatch anytime soon. “it’s 7:16!” “you should have a job on the radio announcing the time”

This is like eating a pre-made dinner from the supermarket: it tastes fine, everything’s exactly on your terms and it stills your hunger without any real effort. The film works in a similar manner. It’s lighthearted, doesn’t provoke anybody and leaves you feeling good by the time it’s over. But there’s just nothing more to it. Surely Morgan Freeman is great and the tender moments do land as genuinely heartfelt at times, although they lean towards overdone melodramatics in others.…

What “Driving Miss Daisy” lacks in energy and forward momentum it trades for a slow burn examination of the relationship of Hoke & Miss Daisy over many years. While I did enjoy it, as well as the somewhat heavy-handed commentary on racism and on growing old, I thought the movie was overall not very exciting or surprising. The best part was definitely that very last shot, which I found to be quite moving.

Saccharine and decaffeinated. This movie is as dull as it is offensive. It has the same Forrest Gump stench of “good-hearted neutrality,” but with even less to offer. What I find particularly outrageous is the decision to make Miss Daisy Jewish. The film seems to use her Jewish identity as a plot shield, softening and excusing the fact that she is a wealthy, racist white woman. It creates a false equivalence between her experience as an American Jewish and the systemic racism faced by Black Americans.

Pleasant and moving, clear yet subtle, this is an issue film that handles its issue well without being preachy or overbearing. Not pat or didactic, no one acts out of character for the sake of heroic moralizing. Dan Aykroyd’s Boolie Werthan, for instance, does not take any selfless stand against racism, opting instead for self-preservation in his stable career and the consensus-building integral to his career advancement. Jessica Tandy’s Daisy Werthan likewise gives no effusive speech of cathartic confession to…

Driving Miss Daisy doesn’t rely on big moments or dramatic twists. Instead, it gently builds a beautiful friendship against the backdrop of a changing society. What touched me the most was how naturally their relationship evolved over time. The film never rushes, and that’s exactly why the emotions feel so genuine. Simple, sincere, and incredibly heartwarming. Time changes people, but friendship has a way of preserving the best parts of us. If you appreciate character-driven stories, take a ride with this one. It’s worth every mile. Good watch and feels like reading a literarture !!
