Don’t F U C K with the babysitter! All movies should start with an Elisabeth Shue dance routine * A bangin soundtrack * Genuinely funny moments * A wardrobe that makes me jealous * An adorably nerdy Penelope Ann Miller * A superhero obsessed little girl with a Gizmo backpack who is literally the coolest and smartest person in the whole film * Baby Anthony Rapp * Unlikely heroes who save the day on multiple occasions * An “Eat the Rich” t shirt * “Nobody leaves this place without singing the blues” How could anyone not love this?

Playing like “After Hours”-meets-John Hughes, Chris Columbus’ “Adventures in Babysitting” is a Murphy’s Law-inspired comedy of mishaps. Assembled in a way that focuses equal parts on the adventure and characters at the fore of the story, Columbus builds a comedy with a richly dark tone and a spry sense of self. Revolving around the everything-bad-that-can-happen-will odyssey of a babysitter and her charges, “Adventures in Babysitting” finds Elisabeth Shue’s Chris maneuvering through multiple urban hazards when she attempts to locate a humorously imperiled friend. With engaging characters and layers of real heart, the narrative forms the basis of an uptempo and enjoyable piece of work with interestingly dark edges. Columbus weaves an inviting and lived-in blend of urban and suburban visual…

What a fun movie. I remember seeing this when I was VERY young, so my memory of it wasn’t to good. All I really remembered was the girl in the Thor helmet. 😄 I was picking up some movies at my library the other day (support your local libraries!) and I saw they had a brand new copy of this on blu ray. Said screw it, I could use a whimsical movie from the 80s. Today is Saturday, and I woke uo pretty early because my wife was already up, so I made a coffee and started playing some Witcher 3. Can you believe I’ve been playing this game for about 5 months now, and I’m 135 hours in, and…

It’s After Hours but with 80s goddess Elizabeth Shue & a trio of youngsters that she’s watching over for the night. Wild city antics ensue and things gets very wacky and pretty damn dangerous. It’s also the best Almighty Thor-related movie that we have received thus far. 👩🏼👶🪑🧑🧑🦰👧🏼🚅🙎♀️🚘🛠🪛🔩🧔🏼♀️🔨🌃🚙💨

“Dont FUCK with the babysitter” In the 80’s I was such a fan of Chris Columbus’ scripts that anything he was associated with I was there for, especially this dark-ish kid comedy adventure that was his first directing effort that I recall not doing well but has since become a cult classic. D’Onofrio as THOR is kinda amazing considering both that he came off of FULL METAL JACKET to this (and having seen FULL and BABYSITTING I had no clue it was him for years). Shue was the perfect babysitter for all us 80’s kids. Movie holds up great too.

“Road Trip!!” After being canceled by her boyfriend (as their date and not her life) Chris Parker ends up having to babysit the Anderson kids, but while babysitting gets a call from a friend who’s stuck in the city with no money (and no clue!) so agrees to pick her up, but has to take Brad and Sara plus Brad’s (I’m just here for the comedy value!) friend Daryl – and then what you get is an hour and 42 mins of crazy situations brought to you John Hughes style! “Don’t Fuck with the Babysitter!” Although set in Illinois this is not by John Hughes (must have been busy that day?) and instead it’s directed by Chris Columbus (of Home…

One of the coolest soundtracks of 80s films, one of the best openings and bloody gorgeous flawless Elizabeth Shue. STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS. That little girl is mega badass too. Did Nick and Norah ever admit that they basically homaged the whole ‘stranded in a bus station’ thing from this film?!

Adventures in Babysitting.

It’s the most 80s film I’ve ever seen, and there’s some gen x-er thinks that’s the highest form of praise possible. It’s not a value judgment one way or the other, but if you’ve seen any of the other better-remembered 80s movies of this type, you’ve essentially watched this one already.

Ironically what not to show to the kids you are babysitting… a bit more language than home alone 😕 This is so dated… but I love it (Chris’ hair is a big contributor).

This movie is honestly so iconic everything about it is so unserious but somehow works perfectly. The 80s vibe, the chaos, the little moments that had me laughing… they really don’t make movies like this anymore. A classic for sure. “don’t fuck with the babysitter” iconic.

Com certeza esse filme tá no meu top 10 melhores cenas de abertura. História super criativa mas ao mesmo tempo óbvia em alguns sentidos (o que não tira a originalidade da narrativa). Gostei muito e me diverti demais vendo. É total aquele filme pra tu ver de tarde, pra curtir comendo uma pipoquinha e ficar feliz. Recomendo muito muito!

Typical ’80s product: teenagers thrown into an increasingly ridiculous and completely unrealistic adventure. It’s silly, cheesy and definitely not trying to be anything more than a fun ride. And honestly, it works well enough. Entertaining, but nothing more than that.

Okay… I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but the comedy was delightful, and I was truly invested in the characters’ story and banter throughout the entire film! This is an 80s movie we need to talk about more. Plus, Chris is an absolute icon. Would love to see the uncut version at some point!

This movie surprised me! What a delight! Elisabeth Shue is so beautiful and charming throughout this movie. The rest of the cast is fantastic. It’s really funny, sweet, sincere, surprisingly tense in moments… like the climax of this movie had my palms sweaty mom’s spaghetti. And the soundtrack rules! I had an absolute blast with this one.

My first rewatch of this since it came out. – One of the cutest openings to a film in history. – Bradley Whitford is sooooo young in this. – when I was really young, my parents had a station wagon. After that it was a Volkswagen van. – I always thought it was strange that a girl that age would be into Thor. – damn, I remember those tvs at bus stations. You put in quarters to watch. It was…

After forcing myself to sit through The Karate Kid, I watched this one as a palate cleanser and to create an Elizabeth Shue mini-marathon. (I have to confess to something of a parasocial crush on Shue.) This is a delightful movie. Yes, the plot is absurd, but director Columbus and writer Simkins embrace and lean into the absurdity. And Elizabeth Shue’s talent really shines. Everything The Karate Kid did wrong, this one does right. First, the soundtrack. The movie opens…

Favourite Chicago movie? This 1987 directional debut from Columbus is up there for me. An essential for lovers of ‘80s teen comedy and an incredibly fun watch! Shue was great in this film as Chris Taylor. Her performance was a big highlight for me.

There is a minor character in this named Sesame Plexor. She is the girl who Chris’ boyfriend Mike is cheating on her with. It’s an odd name to give such a minor character. So I thought about it a little. Mike says something about Chris’ legs being closed when he’s trying to excuse his philandering. Does that mean, conversely, that Sesame’s legs are open and her name is a reference to the famous line “Open Sesame” from Ali Baba and the…

Pure 80’s nostalgia here. I wasn’t alive in the 80’s but the nostalgia still hits. I love a one night adventure, especially one filled with cooky characters and an out of nowhere musical number. Elisabeth Shue shines as well as a little girl who is going to grow up and fall in love with Chris Hemsworth. Elisabeth Shue is the MVP

Omg! I think this 80s classic was so hilarious that it was a combination of crazy reality in downtown Chicago, teenage babysitting, drug dealing business and out of control comedy, in a nostalgic way of the decade. Had a great time watching this with the girls. Biggest disappointment was Chris ending up with a frat boy asking to be babysat, when Joe Gipp was there the whole time! Somehow feels like there’s a direct lineage between Vincent D’Onofrio’s Thor and Bill Hader in Hot Rod.

I thought this was great. All the way around. Love the kid who loves Thor. Brad is alright, but they close out his story really well. You really wanna hate Daryl but end up liking him. And SHE is abso-fucking-lutely STUUUUUNNNIIIIINNNNGGG!! And badass? AND FUNNY??? Yeah, man. Cool ass lady right there. Also Thor the mechanic is really cute. Young Vincent D’Onofrio is somethin’ special. ALSO THE CAR-JACKER IS AWESOME!!!!! Anyways I’m done!

It’s sooo 80s! It took a while, but I finally watched Chris Columbus’s directorial debut, and it wasn’t what I expected! I love it when a movie isn’t quite what it seems at first glance. You think you’re watching a kids’ adventure from the past years, but it turns out to be a film aimed more at older viewers—yet it remains truly charming and enjoyable, with really lovely character arcs. The only weak point is the redhead, who comes across as rather lackluster.

Watched this with my kids, a movie I have seen more times than my own face. I am bound by the sacred ties of nostalgia to overlook its flaws, lest I spit in the face of my childhood self. We watched the Disney edited version so not as fun. Not sure why Deadpool and Wolverine exists untouched but Elizabeth Shue can’t say “Don’t fuck with the babysitter.” It’s largely about white suburban fears of the big bad city and all…

Rewatched this for episode one of our podcast and forgot how much is packed into 90 minutes. Car theft, a chop shop, a blues club full of strangers — and Chris Parker never once takes off her yellow gloves. Never explained. Never addressed. I need answers. The pacing is the real MVP — nothing overstays its welcome, which I deeply respect. Not everything holds up (the Playboy “rape” line has not aged a single day well, and poor Brenda’s runaway…

When I was a kid, I thought that this was the funniest and craziest thing that I had ever seen, and, upon a rewatch, it’s still pretty crazy and funny, but I find myself questioning a few of these choices. A lot of the depictions of the city come across like a suburban tween’s imaginary Chicago—from its terrible dangers to its bustling wonders. While I’m not sure whether this is exactly what Chris Columbus had in mind, it works quite…

If I was younger and growing up in the 80s I def would have loved this. I will say!! Loved the intro with her singing, so cute. And I of course love the 80s style (yes Elisabeth Shue’s coat (I love good coats (esp in movies) I will yell it from the rooftops always!!!!) and her hair loooove and her face obviously). Also — this poster is so sick and I miss hand-drawn posters they are a pure art form and should be brought back!!
