TIFF15 Film #1 Reason for Pick – Cannes Grand Jury Prize winner Hungarian director László Nemes inaugural film captures not only the Grand Jury, but also the François Chalais Award, FIPRESCI Prize, and Vulcain Prize for the Technical Artist, and it’s not hard to see why. A concentration camp film, but set from the perspective of Saul, a Jewish conscripted ‘special keeper of secrets’ worker, of which there are shockingly many. An event triggers Saul, who knows his time is limited, to devote his remaining life to one act of simple dignity. When I say the film is from Saul’s perspective, it is not simply narratively, as there is precious little narrative, I rather mean that the camera ‘becomes’ Saul,…

technically efficient yet exploitative in the bad way, a holocaust interactive thrill ride experience posing as a prestige picture, no one really matters, the victims are unimportant, they’re just obstacles between the protagonist’s checkpoints. pseudo redemption for a man that helped to murder thousands of innocents for the sake of survival but have his redemption come in the sake of not helping saving other people’s lives but in burying a body. he wanders by the faceless, meaningless victims because they do not matter, only nemes’ aggressive posturing formalism matters, this is where empathy and humanity goes to die. i feel so much pain for the victims of this unfathomable atrocity, it fucking hurts to know that so many people died…

Reducing the victims of the holocaust to blurry naked bodies being dragged across the floor is always going to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Then finding out a majority of the extras were homeless people being paid a dollar or less a day made me even more furious. How dare you, Laszlo Nemes, making a film based on one of the ugliest points in human history and building it up from the exploitation of the homeless is despicable. Mind you this is also the man who condemned Jonathan Glazer for advocating for Palestine…

Movies based on real events ranked 1001 movies you must see before you die (Ranked) Oscar Winners (Ranked) (2016) (Best International Feature) My first Hungarian film. (Yes I know I need to watch some Bela Tarr films) With how every scene is filmed in this it’s hard not to be so drawn in and feel so personal about it. If you’ve seen this then you’ll be aware that by far the most striking thing about this film is it’s massively unique cinematography, it’s use of a handheld camera worked so well in immediately immersing you into Sauls horrible world inside of a concentration camp. Obviously what comes with all of that is a mass amount of closeups on all of…

The latest recipient of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Son of Saul (Saul fia) is an incredibly powerful, relentlessly grim & downright disturbing cinema that takes a leaflet out of mankind’s darkest period and weaves an original, absorbing & deeply affecting story around it, all depicted in a manner that only magnifies the haunting horrors of the Holocaust. The story takes place inside the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II and covers a day or two in the life of a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner who, along with a selected few, is tasked with the disposal of the corpses of gas chamber victims. The plot follows his dangerous & desperate attempt to provide a proper Jewish burial to the body of…

We observe Auschwitz-Birkenau in the only way we could bear: at the corners of the frame, where screams are heard but not seen and the bodies being dragged pass by as white, abstract flashes. Or perhaps the method makes things worse by inflaming our cursed imaginations. Either way, applying this extreme cinematic technique to incomprehensible history made for a monumental viewing experience, a way of relocating mass atrocity to a personal level. By blurring all else and confining us to one man’s experience, Son of Saul zeroes in on humanity in the singular, reminding us how every single life that was snuffed out distinctly mattered. After the picture is over and we take a breath, pausing to consider the bigger history that encompasses Saul’s story, the large-scale loss of the Holocaust feels all the more catastrophic. What a claque! Have you ever wanted to know what it was like to be inside a Nazi death camp? Like, really, properly inside its inner sanctum, surrounded by dead bodies, cleaning up the blood, inhabiting the perspective of someone whose remaining days are sharply running out and for whom this nightmare world is the last thing they will ever see? From an anthropological angle, such a thing is of course extremely valuable. How could it possibly feel to be in a situation…

Horrifyingly beautiful. The only way I can describe this. Most World War I/II movies tend to be up in your face with “Let’s show the gory parts happening here.” Son of Saul opts for a story that shows these truths only out of the focus of the lens and focuses solely on the one protagonist. As for the story, it is a bit cryptic at times but it feels almost intentional, like it’s meant to be metaphor about finding something…

In his analysis of Children of Men, Slavoj Žižek constructs the argument that the film is to be viewed at an oblique angle – that is, to hyper-fixate on the immediate action of a given scene would only act as a disservice to the greater construction of the world. Son of Saul distorts this methodology into something even more interesting: that the immediate is at odds with the whole; that the monstrousness of the scene can only be tolerated if out…

I can resonate with detractors reaction to this film as the very draw of the film, the way it is shot, at face value can seem very dehumanizing but I’d argue that is the point. This isn’t done in a way that is malicious or trivializing the death and cruelty that occured during one of humanity’s darkest periods but in a way that connects you to Saul himself. The film is shot in these very close tracking shots that very…

I know this movie is super serious, but every time I see this poster I think of the crying raccoon meme. Anyways, yeah, this movie is not my thing. The first-person shot is not a kind of visual I can deal with for 2 minutes, yet alone 2 hours. Its high concept exposes more tropes than subverts them. Like, every single person is SO MEAN…mostly just to show what it takes in order to survive. Unnecessary. Did not find it emotionally engaging at all, when it should have been arresting.

I really don’t like this much at all. You’re supposed to at least respect it or be moved by it because of the material; but I am extremely exhausted with the Shoah topic. This film’s best moments are when they briefly divert from the horrible cinematography that’s stuck on Saul. I can’t do this stuck-camera thing and everything lost in bokeh… not my type of photography.

Grinding suffocating upsetting. Watching this film in conjunction with reading Zalman Gradowski’s buried manuscripts from Auschwitz set off such a violent episode of derealization that trying to put it into words seems totally futile, even insulting. Such nightmarish things happen in this world—the very concept of “bad” falls short, is entirely inadequate; the living do not deserve the light of the moon—I’m not sure we shouldn’t all be in a constant state of sheer horror and desolation

It has made me feel a turmoil of emotions and most points had me tempted to start biting my nails; it does a great job conveying the dread of the Holocaust, it forces you to use your mental imagery most of the times in cooperation of the amazing sound composition.

A film that gets less impactful the longer you watch it. I found myself emotionally burnt out after the first 30 minutes but that feeling withers away as the film reduces the victims of this atrocity to camera fodder for László pontificate over. Just blurry naked bodies and abused nameless (and often faceless) figures to be exploited by his lens. It’s not surprising to hear he paid a local homeless people pennies to be his extras, nor is it surprising that he ended up smearing Jonathan Glazer with the stalwart Zionist tactic of absolutely baseless antisemitism claims for simply acknowledging Israel’s current genocide.

Good god. If you’re wanting a harsh and haunting look into the events of the Holocaust, this one is one I would recommend. Terrifying, intimate and highly horrific. The first ten minutes contains some of the most graphic scenes of mass execution I’ve ever seen yet it wasn’t the focal point of the shot. During the entire film, like 98% of it, is a close-up, extremely long shot of our main character as if it were glued to his face.…

Son of Saul is a film of dehumanisation, a reckless, almost nameless protagonist setting out in an odd quest to bury a nameless boy amid nameless corpses. Saul is beyond humanity, his soul shattered and faith gone, numbed to all the atrocities around him, with his humanity only regained through death in innocence and faith. This is a film that takes inspiration from its inherit Jewishness in context and thematic elements while paying great tribute to the nameless victims of…

Notes pour ne pas oublier: – Que dire… Quelle claque…

Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA raremeat.blog/son-of-saul-2015/

Very personal and claustrophobic with it being in academy 4:3 ratio. Also the fact that for nearly all the film the camera was either on Saul or just behind him. Also like a Legend of Zelda video game. Even the focus was on him and what he could see in his field of view. I don’t know how they could drag naked “pieces” around like that. The commanders would try to hurry the Jews by saying that their soup would be getting cold. It was only at the end when that boy appeared at the barn door that the subject moved from Saul to the boy.
