saddest part of rent is roger spending the whole musical trying to write a good song only to end up writing the worst song in the whole show :’(

I HATED the musical Rent when I first saw it, and I still hate it. But the movie takes everything bad from the okay and make it a million times better. This movie is amazing and the musical is jsut the cherry on top. Also Le Vie Boheme is such an amazing song, I love it so muchhhh

My opinions on Rent are definitely colored by the fact that I hate all of the art that every character makes Like, idk,,,,, maybe you should be evicted? Cause you definitely shouldn’t be a performance artist 🤷♂️

I swear the story and acting was a 4-4.5 and MAYBE even a 5. But when you are a musical. Youve gotta have good music. Trust me I love musical music and have my whole life. But MAN I hated nearly every song. I mean the movie it’s self was great and the first song was one of the best of all time but the rest of the music just wasn’t it

It’s hard to be objective when this musical (and movie) changed so much of Broadway history and culture. BUT IF I SPEAK- the movie is lowkey corny. The filmography is chopped- too many close ups of the characters even when they’re not the ones singing, the plot is strange when adapted for a movie (pacing is weird, how come the bulk of the action is shoved into the last 25% of the movie?), I dislike all their singing voices (especially…

Okay listen. Rent is not perfect. And had Jonathan Larson been alive, it probably would have evolved for the better, yes. And sure, the movie has its flaws of course. Yet, there is something undeniably raw and urgent, a string tugging at your heart as soon as you hear Seasons of Love. Your chest leaps and a smile creeps upon your face when I’ll Cover You starts its famous riff and Angel and Collins have their happy lovey song (imo…

I think it’s an impressive feat for this movie to have grabbed me despite being about a group of generally awful people. An interesting film to think about and talk about, but I’m not sure it really comes together as a whole. It doesn’t really dig into the kind of poverty some of these characters seem to be in which makes a few of them feel like tourists in their own suffering, and the group of friends are so toxic for each other I was thinking it was a good thing when they split up ahead of the finale.

Everyone kind of sucks, half the songs are really good, and the other half are forgettable… but I can’t lie and say I don’t get emotional at Angel’s storyline. I wish I liked Rent more, but I always come away thinking it’s incredibly messy.
-
A
Second best musical with New Yorkers singing about Santa Fe, but the best song called “Santa Fe.” Going into this I already didn’t like Anthony Rapp or Adam Pascal, but Rapp definitely killed it in this, and Pascal is probably at his best here (Although he’s still not my favorite). Either way, Jonathan Larson was amazing, and Andrew Lloyd Webber wishes he could be him (That’s right, I said it).

I don’t care that it isn’t perfect, I fucking LOVE this film. (Someone cast me as Joanne in the future pls)

i’ve always known the story and most of the music to this so it’s no surprise that i would enjoy this but ughh this is pure excellence and i need to see it live some day! it pains me to believe that larson never got to see his beautiful creation 💔 the reprises absolutely go crazy i was on the edge of tears far to many times…i mean i did crode i fear but who wouldn’t if hell is real i pray with ever fiber of my being that ronald reagan is burning in the deepest depths!!!

Is this a 5 star movie? Probably not. Could I stomach giving it anything less than that? DEFINITELY not. My sister will never forgive me for letting her go in blind. Idina Menzel is fantastic! LOVE how it somehow still feels like the whole thing takes place on stage. The talk-singing is weird at points I kind of forgot how many times they change that from the OBCR. I’ll Cover You (Reprise) is one of the most beautiful musical theatre songs ever and I mean that. Tears streaming down my face!!!

I think Rent is a pretty good musical, and this movie is fine as far as musical theatre movies go, though there are some strange choices I don’t like all that much, like how sometimes it feels like they were just doing music videos for every number with little thought behind it. Kinda crazy that the penultimate song is supposed to be Roger’s perfect song and yet it’s like the worst one in the entire soundtrack. Unfortunately that’s just kinda…

One of if not the single most profound and important pieces of art that has ever been made. Every character feels like one of your friends, and the stories they tell feel like your own. It’s devastating. It’s incredible. Jonathan Larson was a genius and will always and forever be one of the greats. This is the point of art.

Totally see a timeline where I see this at 13 and make a lot of different decisions and make it to Broadway. This is everything that’s wrong with cinema. The glorification of obscene lifestyles that idolise extreme substance abuse and lazy work ethic. This film radicalised me in the wrong way. My college is putting on Rent this fall. Auditions are at the end of the month. This is the most excited and nervous I’ve been for a show. Mark is the goal. 📽️ This show came into my life four years ago and changed my life. It tells us to live in the now without typical cliches of false positivity. It shows life honestly, no matter how dark and beautiful it can be. We’re all we have, right here. 🤎 (But why was Goodbye Love cut from the movie??!! Forever my biggest gripe.)

“Actual reality! Act up! Fight AIDS!” Honestly my rating should be lower but “Seasons of Love” might be the best song ever written for a musical, I don’t care what anyone says. That song means so much to me. Plus, mixing “I’ll Cover You” and “Seasons of Love” during Angel’s funeral sent chills down my body. One part of me also wished they had included the alternate ending of them singing SOL with Angel, I’ll miss her.

I seriously love rent but I prefer it on a stage. I think that this is one of those stories that help you realize that you never know what people are going through or about their lifestyle. And how you never kow about their struggles or weaknesses. One of the things that I love the most about the movie is the cast, we got big names such as Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal which were part of the original broadway…
-
S
Forget regret, or life is yours to miss.

P
Honestly, one of the best adaptions, if not the best adaption of a Broadway play to musical. I feel like a lot of the times, they change so much of the visuals, that the original play gets lost. Using mainly all people who were in the original play, this musical is fantastic. We watched it to Mark a year since having my stroke, where I got a tattoo of “no day but today.” This will be forever my favorite musical.

No idea who saw this play and was like, i know, we gotta get the Home Alone and young Harry Potter guy! Would have liked to see someone else handle it, but Columbus is highly professional and gets all the necessary “coverage” so to speak. Plus a few inspired scene interpretations. So this still rips on the music, underlying story, and (mostly) excellent performances. (I don’t really care for the fella doing Rodger … or even Mark really … as screen actors). Would like to see another attempt some day with a Spielberg West Side ambition, but they did it justice. No day but today.
