Esse documentário conta a história de origem da banda e uma homenagem ao Hillel Slovak — um guitarrista e fundador do Red Hot que faleceu em 1988. O mais me chamou atenção na história de origem da banda é quando eles contam que durante a adolescência, eles não ligavam pra nada; eles tinham aquele estilo de vida que ia contra a maré; fumavam drogas, nadavam com os golfinhos, passavam noites fora de casa, dormiam na praia, quebravam as coisas e tinham famílias desestruturadas. O estilo da banda é icônico e único. Aliás, quando tive meu primeiro contato com a banda eu não curtia muito, mas ouvindo com meu irmão eu comecei a gostar demais e hoje em dia eu ouço repetidamente, se tornou uma banda que eu tenho um apreço enorme.

Though I am a very big fan and have seen/heard most of everything the chili peppers have ever done, it was great to hear and see the early videos and demo recordings that were shown in this film – there was a lot that I hadn’t seen before. I really liked that we got to hear excerpts from Hillel’s diary entries as it felt like he had input into the story as much as Flea and Anthony, and the whole story felt fuller because of this. I remember the first time I ever heard of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was on MTV—I want to say the early 2000s—when the video for “Californication” had just premiered. I was immediately hooked by the groovy melodies. My uncle put this on the other day and I decided to finish it while doing some electrical work. Very sad. Kinda skirts on the edge of “Check out this wonderfully talented lost soul Hillel” and “Aren’t the Chili Peppers the best”… I prefer the prior. Then Frusciante shows up and it’s like “I thought this was a movie about Hillel?” and then he says some crazy stuff but then the movie just ends without discussing Frusciantes drug addiction which undermines/ignores the “Here is this wonderfully lost soul” part of the movie. Flea has a beautiful soul though. Very magnetic whenever he is on screen

RHCP has been one of my favorite bands for as long as I can remember. I’m very happy I know more about them and their history. Really well done and an awesome history lesson in the formation and back bone of the original Red Hot Chili Peppers, as someone who didn’t know all that much about the band but was a big fan of their music, I was surprised with how much I didn’t know. Production felt fresh and it seemed like everyone involved really cared about the project which is always nice. Definitely worth the watch.

Had no idea they started in the punk underground. Cool story with moments of heart. I just felt sorta blue balled by the fact that the doc ended right when they hit mainstream success, when they made their biggest hits, and also was looking forward to learning about Chad Smith (not mentioned at all??). But if you view this primarily as a tribute to Hillel, and the come-up of the original band members, it delivers.
