Yeah, it’s not great. A film that can’t stand on its own two feet, always hunting for a focal point with its excruciatingly rushed character introductions and derivative narrative. While I was trying to take a deep breath and admire the development of this ‘new’ universe, I was bombarded with subpar fight sequences that, to be honest, would have been pretty cool! If not for the constant use of slow-motion (yes, even more than usual). I never felt the stakes or felt eager to see what was going to happen next; it just went on and on—but it didn’t entirely lose me at any time, so there’s that! Surprisingly generic, with no significant risks taken. There’s stuff in here that people will for sure enjoy, but unfortunately, it wasn’t for me.

Derivative sludge, most of the originality stems from the fantastical vocabulary instead of the ideas, which I would’ve cared less about if the movie exhibited any sense of cohesion. Although, it is fascinating how it’s simultaneously one of the ugliest looking movies but also most interesting looking? Snyder has an undeniable sense of style, which I respect, but Rebel Moon looks like it’s been put through a shredder and put back together again with tape. You can see the scars of a movie that’s been botched by a studio trying to manufacture an internet phenomenon. I’m sure the “sNyDer CuT” will be better, but the fact that I had to write that sentence is frustrating enough for me not to care about it.

The extended cut actually does some world building and also (and potentially more importantly) has an identity. It is better paced, even if it does not get rid of the very “team assembly”/episodic structure. But contrarily to the Netflix cut, it gives you some interest in the second part.

I struggle to describe how bad this film is. Comparing it to Seven Samurai seems like a cruel joke. The plot is dumb if you think about it for more than a second, the climax was dumb and anticlimantic (I literally did not believe it was the climax until I checked afterwards), finding each person was too easy (just walk up to a random person and ask where the guy is). I was surprised on like two occasions which counts for about .75 stars of this film’s rating. But man, did this one blow.

I never really got tired of watching people get blasted away by lasers, the effects were surprisingly entertaining. Even the parts with a lot of character/dialogue don’t often overstay their welcome. This is ambitious but mostly boring as hell. The screenplay is … non existent, characters each get a 1 minute monologue to introduce themselves and then the movie moves on, no dialogue, no explanation of the stakes for each of them. It is impossible to have any empathy for them and ultimately this means that no one cares when their lives are threatened or when they make a big sacrifice. This is a shame because the universe seems dark and precisely defined, it would be nice to dive into it. I feel like a limited series would fit this better.

A grotesque overuse of slow motion, an insane number of characters introduced and given a one line description, some of which die during the runtime of this film and are given extended moments of despair despite the viewer having not a single reason to care about a single chapter. Potentially the most predictable “twist” ending possible. I want Zack Snyder and all of his fans heads on pikes in front of the Hollywood sign. Move bad, horrible, awful.

I watched the director’s cut. It’s peak,I mean he literally created a fully unique fictional universe. Is it like the Star Wars movies? In some scenes, yes. Felt like rogue one in some scenes idk why. And the fact that it was supposed to be a part of the Star Wars universe also plays a vital role. But Zack created a totally unique and dark universe,which clearly doesn’t match the Star Wars tone or vibe.It felt like Dune in one sequence. I can see what they are trying to do here (it is not hard to see; they are really not subtile) but it does not work. Maybe it‘s that the visuals while high end feel dead. Maybe it‘s that the characters do not feel relatable (like Luke Skywalker in the first movie) or even likable. It‘s not funny; I couldn‘t get invested. Not a great start to this supposed series.
