Weightless vile conservative dreck. John Woo goes on an aesthetic diet and indulges in a Hollywood parody of his own stylistic trademarks. His direction has stagnated, allowing itself to be overtaken by all of the worst recent trends in American action cinema. And his melodrama, which always struggled to find a place within an American context, ends up reinforcing the most reactionary suburban kitsch, as shallow and appalling as a cheap Hallmark card. Not that Woo’s work hasn’t romanticized the honor of vigilantism in the past. But in those old masterpieces, there was an openness to struggle, a willingness to complicate fixed conceptions of criminal and cop and the notion of justice that puts them at odds. The criminal underworld…

It pains me to give a John Woo film this rating but no matter how hard he tried to inject his interests of cop/vigilante dynamics and the poisonous allure of violence, with no dialogue there’s little to be gleaned here that doesn’t leave a sour taste. Too self-serious for its own good and the other people should have talked! Still had a bird though and that match cut was epic.

For Silent Night, Woo’s return to American film, he at the very least doesn’t have to worry about a complicated script. The gimmick here is that the film has no actual dialogue, though there are some bits of exposition: letters, texts, radio reports. This allows Woo free reign to tell his story with the kind of swooshing musicality that’s been present in his work from the very beginning. Review at The Chinese Cinema.

Should you ever decide to give it a watch, be warned: there’s surprisingly little action in this thing. A little boy is killed by a stray bullet fired in a gang war, and we follow the boy’s father’s attempt to cope in the aftermath. First we watch him mope for a while. Then we watch him plot his revenge for a while. And then he trains. And trains. And trains. Soooooooo much training. No exaggeration, we’re 65 minutes into this movie before he finally puts his revenge plan into motion and we get our first semblance of action. And I know what you’re thinking. “No problem — we don’t need action as long as we’ve got crackling, intense dialogue to…

I liked the big staircase fake one-er but the welcome dose of late action and Woo’s unmistakable style weren’t enough to overcome the utterly generic other 80 minutes.

Awww man. It brings me no pleasure to report that I hated this. If a man loses his son to a stray bullet in a gang war…maybe he shouldn’t prowl the streets spraying bullets in public? As far as style…it doesn’t feel like a movie without dialogue, it just feels like all of the dialogue is missing. It’s awkward as shit. I think I’m actually angry.

This was painful to write as a Woo fan. The dedication to the “no talking” gimmick is so much more oppressive than it is beneficial to the movie’s thesis. Awkward silences and weird staring contests consistently pull you out of the movie and make you think, why the fuck is no one talking? And even if actions speak louder than words, the action alone isn’t good enough to carry Silent Night to success. Aside from several mind melting sequences in the finale, most of the chase sequences and training montages feel lifeless? There’s no electricity in the choreography or the gunfights— where exactly is the juice? There is a level of appreciation when it comes to his visual storytelling, but not enough tears transforming into bullets transitions could save what is ultimately a slightly racist AO3 revenge fan fiction.

Kneejerk: the dude made an honest to goodness finiahable silent movie. Expands on the Modern Times technology bit but could have utilized it way way more. Extreme gross oversight to not use screens to tell more of the story. But Woo packages things that are so digestible that I didn’t really care that it sorta stunk. In its defense, the list of silent era checkbox’s that I spied throughout: 1. Locomotives are in it 2. A chase scene with a fence 3.…

Probably the worst paced movie in existence. The fight scenes were amazing, but it takes 1 hour for you to actually get to them so…

Filme muito clichê no tópico. Já vi a mesma história em milhares de filmes. Dentro do clichê não é mau. Serve para passar o tempo, e para ver o Lil Cudy num filme sem dizer uma palavra, filme esquisito.

This movie was okay, not best out of all his previous films, and honestly doesn’t feel like a John Woo movie until the last 18 minutes. Story is your basic action/revenge/vigilante stuff, it does drag a little in the beginning.

Wanted to start watching more John Woo stuff has he has a lot of stuff that seems so good (taking as an example, HARD BOILED that I loved), but then gotta watch whatever this was, I’m still confused as for whatever this was. It could’ve been infinitely better but it just seems to fail in a lot of stuff it is actually incredible.

The vile reactionary paranoia and gimmicky conceit might have been more tolerable had this meat and potatoes revenge thriller actually delivered on the action goods, but alas twas not meant to be. The film twists itself into knots trying to accommodate the no dialogue device, but the effects are awkward and forced. Less evoking of silent films and more like performers waiting for a line cue that never comes; lead actor Joel Kinnaman lacks the charisma and screen presence to…
