I don’t know who put this on horror list. It felt more like a thriller. You can see some indications that James Wan would go on to make some great horror films. James Wan ranked Spooktober 2025 #4

I love how every gunshot just blows a massive hole into everything. Wan has a knack for elevating silly material and this can be downright idiotic, but hell just look at that one-take sequence at the parking garage. Appreciated the small dose of Goodman too.

Oh wow, how did I not realise this was a Death Wish film, it’s classic revenge. At least it’s a lot better than whatever we got with Bruce Willis. Kevin Bacon gave a great performance, and I honestly thought the film was going to end a lot earlier. Very enjoyable finale. James Wan ranked

Sorry for being so blunt, but this movie is fucking amazing. It’s brutal, horrifying, nauseating, unrelenting and will make your blood boil, as it was meant to. It’s gratuitous violence may turn off the easily shaken, but… Wow… This is one hell of a revenge thriller based on Brian Garfield’s novel. The unrated version is the one to watch.

A fairly standard revenge thriller where an ‘everyday’ man takes matters into his own hands when a gang kills his son during a robbery. It’s not incredibly unique and it’s not going to set the world alight by any means, but thanks to some strong direction from Wan and a legitimately great lead performance from Kevin Bacon, I think this is a good watch for what it is. Consistently grimy, very brutal and I personally really liked how it ended. Although, I can understand it not being everyones vibe. Worth a watch either way in my opinion. #10 entry of the |52 Week Director Challenge| My Last Review: | The Monkey |

This was deeply stupid & over-the-top but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a good time. That one-take parking garage sequence is an all-timer.

First off, credit to gabejs’s review for putting this film on my radar—I might not have known James Wan made this brutal revenge film for only god knows how long if it’s not because of his review. I know a lot of people would probably hate this film since it’s not realistic—but I THANK GOD for that. We see reality far too often, day in and day out on the news. And the sad truth is, the bad guys usually get away with murder and face no repercussions. So it’s great to see a film that shows us what it would be like if justice were actually served! Death Sentence is exactly what you’d expect it to be, and fans…

phenomenally stupid and so self-consciously “gritty” that it just winds up ridiculous. at first only mildly unconvincing, with its white-liberal-nightmare extraordinarily conspicuous gangbangers that seem like they were imported from 1994. putting some generic tattoos on a shaven-headed Garrett Hedlund does not remotely make him seem dangerous, no matter how many Ed Hardy shirts he’s wearing. i was actually prepared to let it slide when Bacon wasn’t immediately questioned by homicide detectives after his first act of revenge, but then the movie escalates to a sequence wherein everyone is involved in an active shooter situation in broad daylight with dozens of witnesses that ends with massive property damage at the parking garage at Kevin Bacon’s character’s office, yet nobody is…

One of the most underrated films of the past decade. Wan’s best, even over The Conjuring. I wish he’d direct more dramas.

Of the 10 films James Wan has directed to date, this film has always been something of a black sheep. It doesn’t help that the reception by audiences and critics hasn’t been the best. But wanting to finally complete the director’s filmography, plus recently one of my favorite movie Youtubers Cody Leach named this his favorite of the director’s, ended up intriguing me to the point that it finally got me to see what this was all about. And well, this is a film that not only chronologically but visually and narratively feels like a bridge between the Wan who was stuck under the confines of the low-budget, high-contrast horror look of the decade, and the director of today who…

It’s a very passable action/revenge movie. Really nothing note worthy but I enjoyed it nonetheless. If you like the punisher you’d like this.

I’ve seen this multiple times. I feel like it’s always ok. Then I see someone talk about how great and underrated it is, and I revisit it. And I still don’t remember much lol. Must be greeeeat? I think he crushes a guy with a car? Or maybe that’s Eli Roth’s Death wish…or fucking maybe both? lol

Meaner, sadder, and slicker than most movies of this ilk. Think Wan brings a certain juice to this, but doesn’t really match how big the rest of the movie is from the violence to the emotions. Still a decent time, always nice to see John Goodman.

Like John Wick but for Saw fans Quite slow burn and restrained for a revenge action/thriller but the last half hour or so does ramp up the badassery. I feel this is intentional cause as edgy as this film’s aesthetic is, it seems more focused on the consequences of revenge; especially with the ending which was kinda bittersweet and emotional Charlie Clouser went off on the score asw

Its not that this is the worst one in this revenge genre. But Its like every one of these fuck up the same exact shit over and over again, Cops, and the message. And this one made me particularly mad. How can you keep a straight face when writing a line where the investigator asks a dad who had his son killed if he started the conflict of the movie? Absolute stupidity.

an underrated masterpiece, ruined by an auteurs ego. the movie itself, the core premise, is okay. its simple. the execution is what youd expect it to be, just basic. what this movie grips you with are two things: 1. kevin bacons performance. you forget hes just an actor, and not an actual father of the two sons. 2. the directing style, which is a two sided blade. its incredibly cool at first, but its reused and reused over and over…

Hadn’t seen this since high school and it definitely still holds up! Death Sentence is a brutal, emotional revenge action film with some great stuntwork, camera moves and transitions, and has some pretty strong performances all around. It can be a little melodramatic from time to time but I found myself consistently moved and when the action hits, Wan stages it all so damn well. The parking garage sequences rocks, the house attack has some great stunt falls, and the…

Easily one of James Wan’s most criminally underrated achievements. Adapted from the literary sequel to Death Wish, Death Sentence strip-mines the vigilante subgenre of its usual cheesy heroism, replacing it with raw, escalating tragedy. Free from the safe boundaries of his supernatural horror, Wan constructs a deeply unsettling, violent thriller where actions carry devastating real-world consequences, backed by impressive directorial virtuosity and high-wire tension.

There are three words I’ll use to describe “Death Sentence”. 1) Boring: nothing made me stuck to the screen and there were very few moments that grabbed my attention back – besides maybe two towards the end. However whenever it happened, it lasted for a short while, quickly losing its pull, feeling cheap and noticeably 2) nonsensical. I don’t expect perfect logic in a bang-pow-kaboom type of film (and it’s fine), but I missed substance and convincing cause-and-effect. The lack…

So this movie is like the chick you wake up next to and have no clue how the hell she ended up in your bed but you remember enough details to put together a conclusive story and that’s what death sentence was like. There’s a bunch of revenge vigilante films, but this one feels realistic, tragic, and believable, with an amazing director like James Wan. I love character-driven stories more than guns and blood. If you have real character development in your story, you don’t need a bunch of guns and stupid stuff. That’s why I loved this movie it feels like something that could actually happen in real life: a simple man taking revenge with fear and dignity. This was raw, gritty,…

James Wan’s adaptation of pulp thriller author Brian Garfield’s Death Wish sequel is, as far as I’m concerned, a criminally overlooked and MASSIVELY underrated film that’s been largely forgotten over the years because it’s essentially retreading the same ground as a MUCH more famous and well-regarded smash hit CLASSIC of crime thriller cinema. I think at the time people just didn’t know what to make of this because it was from a filmmaker who had become pretty synonymous with early…

Kevin Bacon goes full death wish, a brutal, bleak story of the black hole of revenge. James Wan directs one of his rare non horror movies, and makes something far darker and unsettling than any ghost train movie, although just a thrilling.

A simple but good revenge movie for its time that occasionally gets bogged down by its emotional beats. John Goodman makes the most of his brief screen time. Careful with those late-night slushies, kids!

The direct book sequel to Death Wish gets the darkishly somber-action treatment by James Wan. And in this one, our vigilante hero TRULY gives zero f*cks! The story is intense, the violence is graphic (moreso then the 2018 Death Wish remake), & James Wan’s direction is stylish & edgy! Factor Charlie Clouser’s Maximalist, creepy Dead Silence sounding score (that’s a GOOD thing…trust me) & a revenge-filled, action packed final act & this film uncompromisingly crushes! P.S. Is the song Alright by Pilot Speed one of the saddest ending songs to a movie EVER?? I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying! 😢

A thriller in the vein of Death Wish only this time it’s Kevin Bacon out for sweet revenge, and who doesn’t love Bacon? As he is forced to learn the cost of his vengeance and systematically take out the trash it becomes painfully clear there will be no catharsis here. Death Sentence is a follow-up material from Death Wish, which adds very little to the concept of vigilante justice. Bacon and Goodman turn in good performances, but it’s all papered over by predictable tropes.

It’s the privileged male power-fantasy of saving your uniquely superior family by walking out on them and committing hate-filled acts of violence against strangers. The audio design is really funny, the foley work is just slightly too clear, the music is parodically dramatic. The action is really good. The final twenty minutes are a blast and full of surprisingly brutal firearm kills. You don’t really see these sorts of sequences done with a long-barrelled shotgun elsewhere. Worth watching for the novelty and it is rather stylishly presented.

Loved it on rewatch, Kevin Bacon Death Wish benefits from progressive escalation, first tragedy is followed by more later… Its perfectly structured being more dramatic and slow pace at first and getting action packed and brutal as it goes on. Definitely part of the best of James Wan and not the shit ones, the climax on the church turn meth lab felt even a bit John Woo coded. If only Mr Wan would have done more like this. Fuck you Aquabland.

Kevin Bacon AND John Goodman in one movie? Enough said. Well, no. Not really. I must rant. I’m a sucker for revenge thrillers. And this is one of the best I’ve seen post The Crow. The movie alternates between surprisingly emotional gut punches and thrilling action scenes, that just get more exciting as it goes on. This is the coolest I’ve ever seen Kevin Bacon. Love him in…

An extremely solid and very underrated revenge action thriller this was genuinely surprising and definitely a gem in James wans filmography. Basically the real death wish 2 as this was based on the sequel novel but was never turned into a sequel. I find a lot of the action on screen glorious it’s got this mean and nasty brutality to it, I find the characters and performances good and some of the camera work on here is genuinely amazing. All in all death sentence is a very solid revenge film a real gem in James wans filmography and deserves more attention.

Pretty good revenge thriller. Fairly shocking and gritty at times. Kevin Bacon gets activated like a sleeper agent it feels when the chips are down.

Honestly this movie was a mess. The story felt way too predictable and tried so hard to be emotional that it just became boring. The action wasn’t even enough to save it, and I was checking how much time was left halfway through. Kevin Bacon did his best, but the script gave him nothing to work with. Wouldn’t watch it again.

I was somewhat mindlessly entertained by the carnage that was constantly being shoved in my face during this films runtime. Unfortunately the frequent moments of forced melodrama accompanied by what are supposed to be emotional music cues still wasn’t enough to make me care about what was taking place, even when the stakes were extremely high. The worst things imaginable happen to the protagonist and his family and I never really gave a shit. It’s dumb, cliched and vapid and…

This is a movie I did not expect to rule so hard. An adaptation of the sequel to the Death Wish novel, it conveys the fun and erratic nonstop vigilantism of its predecessor. Kevin Bacon is wonderful here, both a damaged man and a bad ass. Garrett Hedlund acts his ass off, I would assume his best role to date. John Goodman is wacky fun, yet dangerous. The editing and especially lighting is mid-aughts garbage and I hate that for this movie, because it could be spectacular without it. Still, a good time. Billy the Puppet in the background was a fun nod.

There’s a scene a half hour in that would be perfect for one of those “Most Heartbreaking Scenes in Movies” compilations Death Sentence is alright as a thriller, it works more as a character study of fatherhood and a man turning to revenge while grieving. A very solid revenge thriller, James Wan really lets loose with some terrific chase sequences, you can see the beginnings of the kinda work he would do later in Malignant. Kevin Bacon is very believable as both a bougie suburban dad and a guy driven to the edge, but what I love is how awkward and unrefined he still is at handling guns, he’s not someone who has a background in the military to explain how he can suddenly be…

It’s crazy how many of these revenge films were getting pumped out in the late 2000s. I remember loving it as a kid because it was made by the guys from Saw and Kevin Bacon was the lead. It still holds up, even if it’s a little slow paced, but the action makes up for all that. Always fun seeing John Goodman play a despicable character too. On a side note I recently saw the Black Angels live and couldn’t…

As a middle aged huwite man, I too harbor fantasies about DGU’s along with an ingrained fear of anyone with tattoos. So naturally a contrived cacausoid revenge fantasy should have been a slam dunk for me, however, some way, somehow, I became so bored during the last 40 minutes that I settled into a deep slumber where I dreamed about shooting a xenomorph with a suppressed mac10. So comparing that dream to a multi-million dollar Kevin Bacon production, I’m afraid…

Revenge thriller about a father spiraling into violence after his son’s murder, and honestly this leans hard into brutal, uncomfortable territory throughout. Nothing about vengeance offers easy catharsis or comfortable moral clarity here. The lead performance carries genuine desperation as things escalate beyond his control. Some of the plotting requires suspension of disbelief honestly. Still, as pure visceral revenge filmmaking this mostly works, confident enough in its own bleak trajectory throughout. I kept waiting for something to properly grab me and it mostly never arrived. I finished mostly out of stubbornness rather than any real investment by the last stretch.
