I was about 20-minutes into THE GREY ZONE when I had this uncanny feeling that I had seen it before. It wasn’t until the end credits when I realized that I hadn’t “seen” it … I’d read it about two years ago when I’d discovered Dr. Miklos Nyiszli’s book, “Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account.” That book had truly unnerved me, and now I was seeing what I’d read about. I hadn’t even known that a movie was made from that source material! I spent portions of both with tears in my eyes. What most impacted me emotionally in THE GREY ZONE was the frequent close-up study of faces. It was the end of life for the…

Just a few weeks ago, I had no idea that Tim Blake Nelson directed movies. Now, I’ve seen all five of his feature films and have come away impressed with the body of his work. The Grey Zone is definitely the most difficult watch. First, the sound is very low so I had to crank it up – and of course, have the closed captions on – to hear what was said. But more importantly, the story is an uncompromising and bleak look at a part of the Holocaust that doesn’t get much attention: the Sonderkommandos, a group of Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz who lie to fellow Jews, lead them to the gas chambers to die and then dispose of…

Ok, Director Tim Blake Nelson, I see you. Now when you are taking your small redneck looking face and odd vibe behind the camera again? But seriously, guys, it is equally fascinating and disturbing to discover new horrors and fucked up things done on concentration camps. No matter if it’s a kind of hope-filled tale at the end like “Schlinder List” or the many awful tales about the experiments and the way the Jewish people were treated. This is something that is constantly exploited, and new foundings ensure that it will keep happening for years to come as we unravel the evil encased in something as small as the human’s mind. Hate seems to have an almost limitless extension and…

Cinematic Time Capsule 2001 Marathon – Film #129 ”We are all just trying to make it to the next day.” How far would you go to stay alive? Written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson. this film takes a powerful look at the Auschwitz prisoners who found themselves in a moral quandary when they were put to work in the crematoria assisting with the shepherding of fellow prisoners to the gas chambers and then disposing of their bodies. The beginning of this bleak film starts out a bit jarring as situations are shown with no explanations, and as things move on it becomes quite apparent that predicaments will be shown as they happen, with no sugar-coating or pandering to the…

The fact that this is a movie I had never heard of and you probably haven’t either is a travesty. It is easily one of the best Holocaust films I have ever seen. I am definitely going to be recommending this alongside Defiance and Jojo Rabbit. The accents might throw you initially, Germans speak English with a German accent while Jewish characters speak unaccented English. But once you fall into this movie’s rhythm it was not let up until the story is done. It is unsentimental and casually horrific to witness and the final minutes of the movie will punch your teeth in. Whether you’re Jewish and you seek out these movies as pieces of art about your own history, or a gentile who is trying to better understand Jewish trauma, you should watch this movie yesterday. Right now it is free on Tubi and it will be heinously interrupted by ads periodically but watch it anyway

The Grey Zone started out on multiple storylines that were confusing at first, but after the 30-minute mark it all started to add up and delivered a number of shocking scenes. The dark, seedy color palette cushioned the way for a jarring emotional experience. The two greats, Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi, once again handed in solid performances. The movie got better and better as it went on and the ending scene left me completely numb. A severely underrated Holocaust-themed piece of cinema.

Who would think that Delmar from the soggy bottom boys could be such a fearless director? Illustrious character actor Tim Blake Nelson directs, writes, produces, and edits “The Grey Zone”, an adaptation based on both a play of the same name by Nelson himself and “Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account”, a book by a Hungarian doctor (Miklós Nyiszli) kept prisoner in “Auschwitz concentration camp” to whom got his life spared to perform “scientific research”. The film depicts a recondite facet of the holocaust with unsettling yet powerful and crucial imagery and a stacked and well-performing cast, but there’s a constant painfully offputting use of interruption mid-dialogue from one character to another that kills any sense of realism instead of enriching it, and a seemingly “amazing final moment” voice-over monologue that is beyond clumsy and a bit sappy. As the title well says, “The Grey Zone” is a film that is very much grey and lies right in the modest middle.

I didn’t know this film even existed before tonight. I’ve never seen it on famous (or infamous) Nazi movies. It’s beyond fucked up evil and director Tim Blake Nelson is not hiding anything off screen. The hatred one would have to possess to do the things in this film is chilling The film is based on the true story of a group of Jewish prisoners at a concentration camp who have a plan to sneak in dynamite to blow it up. They must plan and scheme around the Nazi guards, also around the Sonderkommandos. The Sonderkommandos are a group of prisoners who help the Nazis corale the others Jewish prisoners in the gas showers at the concentration camp. Then they…

The Grey Zone is the most hopeless and despairing of Holocaust concentration camp docudramas set at Auschwitz, just unremittingly bleak. And yet the story is astonishing and important. At the camp, the Nazis employ groups of Jewish prisoners known as Sonderkommando to lead their fellow people into the gas chambers, in exchange for food and drink privileges, with the promise of a few more months of life. Two things happen: A young teen girl miraculously survives the gas chambers (smothered by other bodies, she didn’t breathe in the toxins). Secondly, there is a suicide mission as part of a resistance group to blow up the crematoriums, which if pulled off they believe will then slow down the speed rate of…

It helps to remember that we have fought this and won. The work it takes to do that is enormous, but it is possible. This is a film concerned with compromises. The worst, most vile sorts of compromises. The kinds of compromises a person makes for another moment of life. It is an act of both cowardice and defiance; the film attempts to seek humanity in it. The truth is, there is nothing more human than wanting, striving, despairing to live. There is nothing more human than hope in the most desperate of circumstances. There is nothing more human than both the best and worst of us. There has been a lot of film, a lot of words, a lot…

Ever-present roar of the furnaces was a commendable aspect. Stacked cast, great directing, purposeful long zooms, concise and cut-throat dialogue, soul withering. Some notable dialogue: What we’ve done for a little more life. -Wouldn’t you do the same? -I didn’t have the chance -That’s not what I asked -I didn’t have the chance

Members of the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz plan an uprising. The lack of sappy score is refreshing, but almost everything else feels too artificial. The acting and dialogue are poor and they seem like they are in a play. And the use of an American cast and English dialogue just makes everything feel too American and ‘off’. It also takes itself very seriously so the emotional moments–like Arquette beating up the dude with the woman screaming–often feeling laughable. The Sonderkommando seem…

Went in braced for this to be grim in the worst way — the kind of Holocaust film that turns prisoners against each other for spectacle. The Grey Zone doesn’t do that. It’s careful with the Sonderkommando material, quieter and less controlled than Son of Saul, but there’s real weight in how it handles men forced to empty the gas chambers in exchange for another few weeks of life. There’s a stretch where an uprising starts building, and for most…

This movie really throws you into the darkness, immersing you in the endless death and evil, the humanity that is responsible and the humanity that is still trying. It brings you difficult questions with no answers, as no one can fairly judge victims of the Holocaust. There is no point in which what is happening makes sense to you, but somehow nothing else could happen either. It shows how bravery looks like, and how ugly that can be as well. All their efforts seem pointless, and we can never know if they saved even one human’s life.

Solid look at the impossible choices made in the camps. It’s heavy, hard to watch, and doesn’t sugarcoat a thing. Honestly, the constant parade of big-name stars kept pulling me out of the immersion, which was a shame. I’m pretty burned out on Holocaust movies, but this one was a welcome exception. It’s a bleak, sobering story that extinguishes whatever light at the end of the tunnel there is, yet avoids the trap of misery porn. To see horrific tasks be completed with the mundanity of taking out a bag of garbage puts a new perspective on things. Tim Blake Nelson’s The Grey Zone is widely considered one of the most harrowing and morally complex films ever made about the Holocaust. It is not an easy watch, nor is it intended to be. Based on the writings of Dr. Miklós Nyiszli and the memoirs of Auschwitz survivors, the film abandons the traditional victim-perpetrator dynamic to immerse us in the impossible moral dilemmas faced by the Jewish Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-Birkenau. There are movies made for entertainment and then those made for statement. The latter seemingly a cathartic release from a creator, writer, or director that has been tussling with a heavy subject in their mind and heart for years. In this case Tim Blake Nelson adapted a play that clearly impacted him significantly. Holocaust hostages trade favors for a chance at freedom. A secret squadron sacrifices their souls for a few more seconds of life. Jews fighting Jews like crabs at the top of a barrel. Germans taking giddy pleasure in perpetrating atrocities against humanity. A doomed doctor too useful to be put to death. A girl kept alive but at what cost. A fight against the futility of facist cruelty. Drab, demoralizing, painfully brutal. A reminder of times that should never be repeated.

I think this being a play before it was adapted into a movie did it a huge disservice. There is a good movie here buried underneath all the terrible choices and script. It’s really too bad. Everyone delivers lines like they are reading from a teleprompter. The males were the most egregious. At least with the women I felt like some emotion was being relayed. Why are they all speaking English? I don’t think most white Americans have any idea…

Wow. I knew this film from being a Robert Ebert “Great Movie”, but I was not prepared for how ahead of its time this was going to be. Predates Son of Saul and The Zone of Interest by a decade and a half or more and yet it’s just as raw, dark and immediate as those other pictures. I am in awe of Tim Blake Nelson’s directing; everything is as grey as the title suggests while the incredible ensemble of…

Moments later, Harvey Keitel’s SS-officer enters the washing room and reprimands two Sonderkommando members weesz ah szeeck Dzerman acszent — as most Nazi baddies do in these American-made Holocaust films. Fortunately, Tim Blake Nelson takes a different tack on it, so I won’t have to do any rewrites, but that’s not really important and selfish of me to think about (but I am…

I don’t think we get to The Zone of Interest without The Grey Zone. Ahead of its time, bursting with life and loss, and overwhelming in inevitability, the film pulls on the work of Elie Wiesel and Alain Resnais far more than on Schindler’s List or Life is Beautiful. There is nothing to learn, only to see. Whether we’ve evolved past the need for learning or devolved so learning wouldn’t stick anymore, it’s not for me or Tim Blake Nelson to say.

“The grey zone” es una película más que se anima a retratar la barbarie del Holocausto, aunque esta vez lo hace desde las entrañas mismas del horror: las cámaras de gas, ese mecanismo industrial de muerte que aniquiló a miles de judíos. La premisa es tan potente como insoportable, con imágenes no aptas para personas sensibles, aunque sí para quienes (como yo) tenemos cierta obsesión con esta etapa oscura donde la humanidad valía poco y nada. An admirable film by Nelson. He strips the score (a low machine works hum is constant) and sentimentality in service of bleak reality. Only the very American cast break this veil of authenticity. The final scene is quite masterful and starkly poetic. Son of Saul and Zone of Interest really take this ball and run with it into an even darker and more stripped down hell.

The Grey Zone.

It was more lopsided than that, but definitely in betweenMainly the men’s camp and the women’s camp, though those are great generalizations. Stripped-down, unsentimental, and incredibly bleak even amongst Holocaust movies. Tim Blake Nelson combining 1990s-era “Cool Guy Dialogue” within the setting of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp is so horrifyingly brilliant. every scene, every second, every shot you see, you want to look away at how terrible the acts are, & then you hear the characters talk, and they feel so human, so full of life. The Grey Zone highlights a particularly horrifying practice within the Auschwitz extermination camps, already one of the most horrifying places to ever exist. Small crews of captured Jews dubbed Sonderkommandos were ordered by the Nazis to lead their own people into gas chambers, feed the corpses into ovens, and dispose of the ashes. In exchange, they’re allowed to live a bit more comfortably for a little while longer – a few months maybe, if their dead predecessors are any indication.…

There are some wild choices here, beginning with casting. It felt very discordant, what with the lack of German, Hungarian, and Polish accents. Everyone speaks English, and mostly with American accents (though leave it to Harvey Keitel to go all in), even when characters are “speaking” German or Hungarian. It is no less horrific, but it felt somewhat removed from its subject matter as a result.

Ah man. Stating the obvious here about a holocaust movie, but this was rough. Very unflinching, very blunt. I commend the punches it doesn’t pull. It’s the polar opposite to something like The Zone of Interest, where that film decides to artfully show nothing, this film decides to brutally show everything. It can’t quite escape its theatrical stage-play trappings, so the dialogue delivery often feels a little stilted and unnatural, but I became used to it (along with the accents and lack-of accents in some cases) and by the end there are multiple scenes that will be etched in my memory for time to come.

One of the better, more intense, and more emotionally powerful holocaust films out there that was criminally overlooked by virtue of having it’s premier on 9/13/2001. What do you mean audiences weren’t in the mood for a devastating holocaust film two days after 9/11?! There are some things holding it back (like a couple of weak supporting performances and the inconsistent way it handles languages translated for the audience being quite distracting), but there are also multiple moments and scenes that had me holding my breath or getting choked up. It’s time for The Grey Zone to be re-evaluated for the powerhouse that it is

Many Holocaust stories have clear good and evil, but what about the Sonderkommando? These were Jews helped Nazis murder thousands of people at the concentration camps. They escorted the inmates to the gas chamber while telling them that it was only a shower. Afterwards, they would take the bodies to the ovens. In return, the Sonderkommando received good food and accommodations (better than their fellow Jews received). They also got an extra four months to live. The Grey Zone is a heart-wrenching film about the Sonderkommando. As the title indicates, the story is filled with moral ambiguity, tough questions and no easy answers.
