I remember really liking the six season 2010s series based on this movie for so a long time I’ve been interested on checking this out. And while the film fails to sustain and deliver on the number of laughs as it does during its first 30 minutes or so as it starts to lean more into the drama camp, it still was consistently charming, with Martin and Weist being the standouts. Grandma was also really funny. I really missed comedy films where we had a funny and crazy grandma cracking up jokes and commenting on the least expected things, mostly regarding sex. dildo, to be more specific. All in all, if you are into family dramas where every family member is played by an established or up-and-coming big name, some at their best, this one is worth checking out. that scene when tod talks about paternal figures gets me every time bc you can’t help but imagine that the delivery of That line came from such a real place. also, bb keanu being a male figure to an even bbier joaquin (LEAF!) is THE softest thing god i love this movie

You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they’ll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father.

Steve Martin’s character announces in the first scene that he’s 35 years old — almost five years younger than I am now — and when he said that my soul completely left my body. It turns out Martin was more like 45 when this movie was made, so I feel a little better. But it’s still touch and go, to be honest.

Could have been a 5 star if we had more stoner Keanu Reeves explaining sex to little kid Joaquin Phoenix

“Yeah, well, it depends on the man. I had a man around. He used to wake me up in the morning by flicking lit cigarettes at my head. ‘Hey, asshole, get up and make me breakfast.’ You know, Ms. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish. But they’ll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father.” – High school burnout Keanu Reeves, accidentally assuming an older brother role to a very young Joaquin Phoenix because Joaquin thought he might be a “pervert” after “slapping the salami” a lot. Being a parent is the absolute best. Also, it’s the absolute worst. Up and down, down and up.…

If an ensemble comedy this good dropped out of the sky and showed up on Netflix today, people would lose their fucking minds. Pandemonium in the streets, think pieces in the sheets. It would probably kickstart a whole movement where you could make comedies again about people just living their lives where one of those people isn’t Ryan Reynolds blowing up an Arby’s and saying “yeah, so THAT happened” straight into the camera.

Heartfelt and true. Keanu Reeves with the greatest line in cinema history: “You need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they’ll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father.”

Recordatorio de que, en un mundo justo, Dianne Wiest debería tener una carrera espectacular. Y de por qué no quiero hijos.

White families amiright. The scene where the grown ass man asked his dad for like $26,000 cuz he lost it in gambling and then his dad gives it to him, and then he slaps him casually on the shoulder and asked for walking around money for a trip. My parents wouldve laughed in my face wtf 🤣🤣 All jokes aside, internal fan girl seeing young Keanu and Martha Plimpton casted as a couple I would’ve ate that up in 9th grade 🙂↕️

More serious than I expected. Kind of slice-of-life-y which is cool, but it was also a little long. Some pretty funny moments. Reminded me of Love Actually in how the movie is broken into distinct plot lines that come together in the end.

What a cast! What a wholesome picture! Very funny with a great arc for everyone. I was surprised how much they could fit into 2 hours. So glad they turned this into a TV show. Absolutely deserved

Parenthood is hard and this movie showed that. Parenthood also shows some bad parenting mistakes. Relationships are hard, family is hard, being a child is hard. All you can do is try and give it your best shot because it isn’t perfect but it might be. 0.5 stars added because I really like the tv show Song: It isn’t perfect but it might be – Olivia Dean

Ron Howard making the most endearing movie about generational trauma, but it was in the 80s, so naturally the resolution to all of the issues was for everyone (and I mean everyone) to have more babies. “Well that was money well spent” – Steve Martin “We can record our love” – Keanu Reeves “We grew apart… as people do in these troubling times” – Larry Kroger aka Pinto “That Tod” – Dianne Wiest “Hubba hubba” – Kevin

I get it. Being a spouse is hard. Being a parent is hard (as fuck). Probably just functioning in society is hard. This is kind of a movie version of that. I didn’t feel very strongly about it. And it pains me to say that because the cast is elite, and I’m a big Ron Howard fan (this is my 32nd Howard movie). It’s all fine! I only wish I enjoyed it more.

Conspiracy theory Mary Steenburgen and Steve Martin got divorced. She decides she wants to get away and move to the LA area for a fresh start. They say you can either stay with dad or go with mom. Kevin isn’t gonna go obviously because he’s a little worrier. Taylor being the most normal of the four decides to stay with dad because he’s so much fun. The baby stays and becomes the next Larry, mooching off Jason Robards until his…

This movie is so good, so touching, and I think everyone who watches has one character they can really relate to. I wish we would have seen more of how the families interact with each other and support each other, but it’s kind of on point that they don’t see each other all day everyday because they all have their own families to take care of LOL

I’ve only seen this one other time when I was about 12 years old and I remember really liking it. But this schmaltzy late 80s/early 90s sentimentality just doesn’t work on me anymore—I find it borderline painful. It’s also crazy that even at this young of an age, Joaquin Phoenix always finds a way to be the best performer. He and Dianne Weist are the best parts of the movie, followed by Steve Martin’s undeniable charm. The worst part is the school shooting joke which is so offensive and grotesque that it put such a sour taste in my mouth. Just a very topsy turvy movie.

This is very clearly Ron’s best movie which annoys me ever so slightly because he also made a space movie based on a true story starring Tom Hanks that I absolutely adore (a premise cooked up in a lab specifically for me) and somehow, almost unbelievably, that now lives in the two hole. I’d take a fuckin’ bullet for Kevin. He deserves the world.

Forgot just how damn good Parenthood is. So many great lines and just how funny and emotional it gets. I do get tired of Kevin, but I imagine that’s on purpose so we get a little of what Gil and Karen are going through. I also think Marilyn(the grandmother… and by end the great grandmother) had a story we didn’t see. But with her very little screen time she conveyed everything we needed to know. And of course I’m a huge Keanu fan so this will come as no surprise but I love him as “that Todd!”

Made me feel entirely ready for it and not with it all at the same time, which I think was the intent. Very comfy and cozy vibes/humor all throughout this one, definitely a top contender Steve Martin joint. *4.1

You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they’ll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father. Parenthood is one of those movies that feels like it should be much worse than it is. The premise is broad, the cast is enormous, the emotions are constantly threatening to spill over into schmaltz, and Ron Howard is juggling about six different family dramas at once. Somehow it works. It’s hilarious. More than that, it’s weirdly moving. It understands that parenthood is simultaneously one of the most important things a person can ever do and one of the few…
-

This show really has a place in my heart, because the show has really deep emotions in it and feels as if you are really there in the moment. Although the acting can sometimes be bad! If you are into emotional 2000s shows that you can get really into this is the show for u.

Enjoyable, but probably wouldn’t watch it again. It had a good cast and I liked that it explored complicated family dynamics, though. I think I had a crush on Rick Moranis as a kid. Not him specifically in this movie (cause his character kinda sucks) but just in general. Wacky 😳

Weird start… but dang this an oddly refreshing and strong validation of current feelings I have as a new(ish) parent. “Some like rollercoasters, and some like carousels” granny’s line brought a little tear to my eye as a father. I definitely like the roller coaster.

This movie used to give me Anxiety. I could see myself in so many characters as a kid and it felt overwhelming. The chaotic feeling of family was comforting though. It felt like watching my future. Thanks Ron Howard.

A less funny Steve Martin, but it’s got a well rounded cast that does a good job of showing the highs & lows of family life. The film does a good job of balancing comedy & truth without getting to ahead of itself. A family movie that goes hard. I’ve watched it in every era of my life and let me tell you, it hits different when you’re a parent. Grandma’s line about the rollercoaster 🥹 and Steven Martin as a cowboy is peak Steve Martin.

I love movies like this as someone with a strange relationship with my parents. 80s-90s family movies are so melancholy to me for this reason. My parents and I watch these together every few weeks but once they’re over I always find myself longing for closer relationships to my mother and father. I wish I had the chance to be friends with them, but as a kid they were so stressed having moved to a new continent and redoing school…
-
M
Well, that was a very pleasant surprise. In the beginning I thought that there were way too many characters and that some were even unlikable, but as things progressed that changed dramatically. There are children and parents alike of vastly different personalities, issues, and even one complete failure all together and it all became so very powerful to witness. Martin gives the best performance that I’ve personally seen of his, but I must say that his dipping back into his…

Keanu Reeves is literally the best thing in this film. There’s one scene where he absolutely steals this film away and he is literally the funniest part, while being sincere.

C
I love Steve Martin, I wish we still had feel good comedies, they just ain’t doing it like this anymore. The fact that this movie was made in ‘89 was definitely showing, and only one scene made me fully gasp out loud, but otherwise this was great.
-
K
I wonder if this film was provocative for the time. It was very classic 80’s film in that it was hokey but then there were dark parts that showed a more realistic portrayal of life.
-
M
Steve Martin could make anything watchable. He seems like he’s just a great dad. The plot is pretty ‘90s and has a lot of plot points that Ron Howard probably thought were pretty fitting when the movie came out. After this movie, the characters having more kids at the end seems pretty sadistic and fits why my parents didn’t stop after 2 children. Great acting by Robards, Martin, Steenbergen, Moranis and Weist, but a very out of date plot.
-
M

-
C
I had a real crush on both Leaf (now Joaquin) Phoenix and Keanu Reeves when I was a kid, which I think is the sole reason I liked it back then. Now I see it for what it is, a kind of “family and life can be as wacky and wild as you want, so long as you all conform to the marriage and kid route, as that’s the true essence of being alive”. While within that rather binary framework…

It is remarkable how much of this I remember from more than 25 years ago. It must speak for somethinfm The performances are good, Robards and Wiest are great, Martin not so much. But the rote nature of the meditations on parenthood make it a little too corny.

I’ve been watching this movie since I was about 6ish years old, it was in heavy rotation with my brother and I as kids. It really shows the dynamics of different families and what we all are dealing with, we all identify with some aspect of this film The little brother Larry suuuuucks absolutely ignoring his child he just found out about only to dump him on his parents. 🫢😒 Cowboy Gil is some top tier birthday shit 🔥 🥳…

This movie has held up and it’s easy to see why it was made into a TV series (full disclosure: I never saw the series). Dianne Wiest and her immediate family’s storyline is still my favorite. First Dianne is amazing and does excellent work here. “I was at Woodstock….I thought you looked familiar.” A+++ delivery. Keanu Reeves and Martha Plimpton are wonderful together. Joaquin Phoenix still heartbreaking. The whole cast is great, with only Rick Moranis being hard to buy as an intellectual yuppie dad. Great rewatch.

They call me Cowboy Gil, as in guil-ty. I saw Cowboy Dan. I didn’t like the look on his face…so I killed him. I blew a hole in him this big. Actually it was about this big. You know, when I think about it the hole was actually thisss big. And his guts were spilled out all over the floor. As I was walking away I slipped on his guts. A couple of other people came by and they started slipping on his guts too. After I blow a hole in somebody and slip around on their guts I always like to make balloon animals.

Crazy this has a full-on school shooter dream sequence. Don’t think that one would fly these days. Decided to finally watch this now that I’m a parent myself. Definitely has that slower 80s/90s pace, but does a good job showing how messy life and family can be. Randy Newman intro and outro is peak too. MACCU Week #26 — Family Reunion/Vacation Week A very fun late 80’s film that essays the modern american nuclear family. All the cliche, bittersweet, yet trite phenomena that every parent encounters. A kid saying “hubba hubba” to his mom, a grandfather asking his son for parenting advice, the cyclical nature of our habits being passed down to our kids; all of these things and more are so beautifully depicted and exposed. Not to mention it’s an all star cast with a young Joaquin Phoenix!

everything about this movie made me feel miserable but Martha Plimpton’s undercut was cool as hell. All of the wives need purple hearts for what they went through. You know it’s bad when even i (resident mousy bespectacled nerd lover) cannot sympathize with the Rick Moranis character. He was straight up elitist and manipulative and talked down to his wife and acted like she was stupid for wanting her child to be well rounded .. all the other couples…

Pretty deftly rides a line between the tragic and comedic that always finds it way back to somewhere grounded. By using this more realistic writing approach (though this is still clearly an 80s Hollywood film at the end of the day) among several generations of different characters, it manages to resonate and feel relatable from a variety of perspectives.
