While the plot didn’t seem to be very original, I was willing to give The Book Thief a chance as it had talented veteran actors involved. Unfortunately, I found it barely watchable on many occasions due to the presence of a pretty silly narration, unconvincing performances from part of the young cast, cringe-worthy dialogue at times and overtly sentimental situations that didn’t impact me. I thought it would be intriguing to see the children’s perspective of WWII, but the characters were shallow and everything seemed to be handled in a desperate attempt to provoke tears from the audience. I know many people here enjoyed the film and I’m pleased it worked for some, but I just couldn’t get emotionally invested by the story at all.

this book is one of my favorites. here are my thoughts! -the film absolutely did not touch upon how much rosa really loved liesel and hans. she was a little mean on occasion but everything she did was out of love, i feel like this movie just portrayed her as an asshole -i also wish they had focused more on the fact that the film is narrated by death. his narration made the book unique, and the lack of his narrative makes this just another story about nazi germany that being said: the film is still pretty good, i just find it’s missing some of the charm of the book

Me…

Not necessarily the worst adaptation I’ve seen, but I personally feel as though it lacked a lot of the emotional resonance the book had. Considering the book’s length, I don’t think they could’ve really done it another way. Nonetheless, rather interesting.

At first, I thought some scenes were omitted or changed to compress the story and make it as child-friendly as possible but DAMN this isn’t an adaptation at all.. it’s a stolen premise!! I will never forgive how my favorite —and the most IMPORTANT — chapter of the book is not included here, and the greatest mistake here is dropping the charm of death’s narration! Big mistake. Big. Huge. And sorry but I don’t get the praises for Sophie Nelisse…

The Book Thief is a historical coming of age drama about a young girl who loses her family to the swift political changes radicalizing Nazi Germany and forced to live with foster parents. Directed by Brian Percival with a story by Markus Zusak, this film is as much about the importance of knowledge and the written word as it is about taking a stand and following your heart. Shot on a modest budget and filled with veteran stage actors its…

Markus Zusak, the author of the book thief, was my first touchpoint into the world of devastatingly beautiful prose. i speak about the novel with highest reverence; it is as endearing as it was when i first read it at age 9. however this movie adaption seems insufficiently interested in finding a cinematic language capable of replacing what it inevitably loses from the page. give me boiling reds, blinding white, the violent and the visceral. force me to inhabit death’s strange,…
