I, unlike the vast majority of people, saw The Pacific before Band of Brothers. I feel this is important because The Pacific is placed under the shadow of its predecessor and is judged intensely against it; more so even than most movies. While comparison is always a good way to understand any piece of media, we should always acknowledge a separate identity for any creative work. This review will look at The Pacific as its own individual series, per usual using Band of Brothers as comparison to illuminate individual points. It will be seen that The Pacific is both better and worse than Band of Brothers, and is a great miniseries. Right off the bat I enjoy The Pacific more…

This miniseries which has the same DNA as the hugely successful Band Of Brothers unfortunately doesn’t have quite the impact that Spielberg and Hanks’ original wartime epic had. Although it follows a similar path in terms of introducing a selection of comrades from different backgrounds, this series seems to focus more on the barbarity of the Pacific conflict and the loss of the American soldiers’ humanity when faced with an enemy that will stop at nothing to win a war. The action sequences are exhilarating, the carnage and the bloodshed of the battle for Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa are hard to shake off, and for me that’s where this series differs from Band Of Brothers. As with said series, we…

Sorry guys, but I don’t believe this is my cup of tea. Not much war movies or series since I’ve watched so many others that I’ve like, but there’s something about this one and Band of Brothers that I simply can’t build any form of bond with. The cast is good, and they try their best; this time, the cast is smaller, so I can tell who is who at the end. The action sequences and social drama that predominate this series are skillfully done, but not entirely effective on making much of an impression on me ultimately. Although, in the last episode, seeing where and how each of them ended up for some reason, quite unexpectedly, made me cry…

the tomven hanksberg school of war movies – the platoon’s honorary jew – homoerotica – close knit Italians – flame throwers into bunkers “don’t shoot, let em bastards burn, boys” – a single brutál stabbing per production – casting ur son (ok maybe that only happened once) – the company’s singular cajun

Felt inspired to rewatch after band of brothers. Again takes a good few episodes to get into but it is brilliant. Best title credits ever. The nighttime combat isn’t the best to watch as can’t always see a lot. Great acting tho and you really feel immersed in it all.

I binged some of it and by the end it felt like I had been slugging it out in the pacific too.

Such an incredible show with amazing visuals and characters. It was quite moving how impactful the war was having on the Marines and how much it changed them. I just wish there was less sex scenes.

goddam Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the whole pacific theatre was genuinely hell on earth, rivaled by Stalingrad maybe? very humbling in general. ain’t no band of brothers but pretty close, retraction of .5 of a star for the sub par characterisation of Australians. oh, and a young Rami Malek whatttt

I only started watching this because of Jon Bernthal and Rami Malek, but by the end I feel like I came out of it a completely different person. I ended up loving all the characters, and the final three episodes were amazing. Episode 8 was probably my favorite. You can really see how much Sledge changed throughout the war and how much it broke him down. That scene with the wounded woman in the hut really broke my heart, how…

very solid war action drama with a lot of effort put into it in terms of location shoots and real practical effects that pay off. however, they had ten whole episodes and somehow still didn’t manage to explore a single character in-depth save perhaps for sledge… how p.s. watched before band of brothers for maximum objectivity

This is such a tonal shift from BoB bc holy shit some of these scenes and episodes are just brutal. Rami Malek and Joseph Mazzello are amazing in this though.

The beginning of it is pretty boring – the story picks up when Eugene Sledge is introduced Still a great show ; captures the horrors of war better than bob imo

A thing that frustrated me at first but I came around to appreciate is how they never really emphasized the objectives or important moments in these big battles. It was just another day in the meat grinder while they watched their friends die

Didn’t love as much as Band of Brothers but still a pretty good show. The last 3 episodes are really damn good but did find it wasn’t as well packed as the first show. Great cast especially Rami Malek he is electrifying in this. Glad I finally marked this one off my bucket list!

The filming and set design is in a league of it’s own. Unfortunately it often gets compared to Band of Brothers, due to both being true stories and of WWII. However, they both take very different approaches to character development and story structure, and this is where The Pacific falls short. Although it is a story of the soldiers and not the war campaign, not focusing whatsoever on what is being achieved over the years, makes it difficult to understand…
-
A
The worst thing about The Pacific is that it’s a spiritual successor to Band of Brothers, making it almost impossible not to compare the two even though they’re fundamentally different. Spielberg and Hanks weren’t trying to recapture Band of Brothers: where that series focuses on camaraderie, shared triumph, and a noble sense of collective survival, The Pacific is much bleaker, emphasizing isolation, brutal attrition, and the gradual loss of humanity. Unlike Band of Brothers, it rarely portrays its soldiers as…

I love this show even with all its faults. Its ambition is what barred it from becoming something as memorable and loved as Band of Brothers. Wanting to surpass its predecessor’s scale did more harm than good, unfortunately: focusing on three separate casts of characters; three different takes on the pacific war. Ten hours was just not enough to cover it all. I will forever be grateful that I found Sledge’s book and story through this show, but now I…

Another banger, right up there with Band of Brothers. Very gruesome but very realistic of what the war in the Pacific looked like. Absolutely fantastic and it was entertaining every second. The different storylines that all overlap was a great touch as well

The Pacific is a very good WWII miniseries that highlights the United States Marine Corps’ involvement in the Pacific War. While The Pacific may not have the same effect as Band Of Brothers, this show still manages to pull no punches with the action sequences, performances, direction, set designs, costumes and story. Overall, The Pacific is a very good show that hooks me up with the Pacific War battles.

Spectacular
-
M
Great at points but the chopping and changing of story lines makes it harder to follow the characters than in Band of Brothers A lot more brutal though and captures the horrors of war
-
K
The Pacific is gruesome. The miniseries never holds back from making the brutality of the Pacific Theater clear. As each year passes and I grow beyond the age at which I would have been draft eligible, I find myself increasingly mystified by how literal teenagers were able to survive war. As a work of fiction, The Pacific is a notch below Band of Brothers. The disjointed narrative and wider character focus is more realistic to the fog of war, but…

When compared to BoB, the Pacific pales in comparison. Viewed independently, it delivers an incredible perspective of what soldiers of the 1st Marine Divison endured while fighting in the pacific theatre against Imperial Japan in WW2. The journeys of Sledge, Leckie and Basilione during this time are difficult to watch as they endure true island guerrilla warfare. Sledges path is a combat coming of age story (by no means like Stand By Me). Having read his book, “With the Old…

HBO’s 2010 war miniseries The Pacific earned high critical acclaim, holding an 89% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86 out of 100 on Metacritic. Reviewers praised its uncompromising realism, scale, and emotional depth, though it is often compared—sometimes unfavorably—to its predecessor, Band of Brothers.
-

Wow! It took me a few episodes to warm up to this because I went into it with the Band of Brothers mindset. But this is no Band of Brothers. And once I met Eugene Sledge, my life changed. And that last episode… I had to pause whenever I saw him in a normal suit while everyone else was in uniform. It was heartbreaking. You will be in my heart forever, Sledge.

C

It’s that damn tenth episode, I think about it all the time, Leckie finally getting the girl, Sledge coming home at the end of it all, but as Snafu said on the frontline, ain’t none of them going home, and so it goes Sledge is back but part of him will always be lost on Peleliu and Okinawa. It’s Lena sharing the grief of losing John with the in-laws she never met while he was still living, it’s Sledge’s father…

Sad White Boys 2: Sad White Boys in the Pacific The above was written (mostly) in jest, but The Pacific seems to carry on the Band of Brothers tradition of featuring a crowd of pasty-faced young men that have an inbuilt tendency to stare pensively off into the middle distance. I suppose it’s all a very “American” production, with its dogged commitment to preserving a certain image of good ‘ol boy heroism, the film cameras turning their unquestoning lenses up…

A step down from BoB, but still a great miniseries on the Pacific Theatre. Didn’t really like the jumping around aspect that was different from BoB sticking only with Easy Company. Took a bit to get through The Pacific. The first 5 episodes range. I believe ep 3 was the one for sure meh one. However the last 5 pay off very well. A bit more brutal and unpleasant. Less speeches and character color and a bit more nitty gritty moments on and off the battlefield. Much like Band of Brothers not everyone prominently featured makes it to the end. And also like BoB the post war finale lands harder than expected. A solid spiritual sequel series.

10.0 How could you ever watch and not be in awe, no amount of rewatches could ever take away that feeling. I’ll start by saying as me and Rhys had recently talked about, there is a lackluster amount of film dedicated to the Japanese Theater. And not only is the pacific one of those rare films that covers the conflict, it is one of if not the best depictions of war you will ever watch in your life (same as…

It’s hard to write a review when a show has left you so speechless, and this is all I could write up in my bittersweet shock at the ending. War is hell, if your dreams were like this you’d never go to sleep and if dreaming was the only escape you’d never get out of bed. I wish I could do like 3 3/4 stars. While its companion show band of brothers gives more of a heroic telling of the war in almost a glamorous idealistic poster, I appreciate that the pacific leans more into the horrors of ww2 found on the pacific front.
-
H
The Pacific will unfortunately always sit in the shadows of Band of Brothers due to essentially being the Pacific Theater companion piece to the original show. Band of Brothers benefited from following a single unit which allowed it to have better character development and build up a backstory for the guys you follow the entire series. The Pacific doesn’t have that luxury because the creators decided to follow multiple sources. Despite the flaws in character development, I was far more…

You know you’ve reached peak middle age when you watch an entire 10-hour WW2 miniseries in 48 hours. Then, promptly order a 900 page history of the Japanese empire from 1936 – 1945. Then, on a first date, bring up Unit 731. (Actual thing that happened.)

The Pacific is one of the best war miniseries ever made, though it’s often unfairly compared to Band of Brothers. Review: 9/10 What makes it great: – It presents the Pacific War with exceptional realism—brutal, exhausting, and psychologically devastating rather than heroic. Its anti-war message is one of its strongest qualities. – The performances are outstanding, especially by Joseph Mazzello as Eugene Sledge, whose emotional journey becomes the heart of the series. The production values are extraordinary. Produced by Tom…

Waaaay better than I temembered. A grim, muddy, angry, depressing counterpoint to BOB. Wasting nazis and beating hitler and coming home to have fucktons of children was the great adventure and at least the Germans would surrender but the pacific campaign was hell on earth and fighting the Japanese soldier was a completely different story. Makes you realise why the manhattan project went ahead. Absolutely savage, heartbreaking stuff.

Another great war show. Unlike Band of Brothers, this one trades the “company as a whole” lens for a handful of individual, Sledge, Leckie, Basilone, and mostly benefits from it, even if some stretches (most of the Australia episodes) feel like filler. What it really nails, though, is showing how much more brutal the fighting against the Japanese was compared to the Germans. Part of it’s the environment, jungle rot, disease, and terrain that grinds men down before a single…

I thought this show would be just like Band of Brothers, and boy I was completely wrong. The gruesomeness of The Pacific is portrayed very well, and some of the story arcs, especially with Sgt. Basilone and Lt. Ack Ack had me near tears. Seeing the soldiers on both sides die left and right constantly puts in perspective how much the odds were against survival. I will 100% be watching this again with my kid because I think it showed how much blood and sweat went into keeping America safe.

Great show. I don’t like as much as band of brothers but I think that is because the storytelling is divided between multiple groups

Another great series that is very much on tier with Band of Brothers.

Probably one of the best show based upon WW2. The show follows a whole company, but specifically three man in the war. 10/10
