Flags of Our Fathers was a pretty thoughtful war film from Eastwood, focusing on the famous photo of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima. Instead of a straight focus on battlefield action, there’s a focus on how heroes are created, marketed, and equally remembered. It’s basically an anti-propaganda film at the core of it all, and a great willingness on Eastwood’s part to present soldiers here not as larger-than-life heroes, but more so as ordinary men caught in extraordinary circumstances. There’s a great look into propaganda, as I’ve mentioned, and this overbearing marketing of soldiers and the impact it has over time. It’s pretty thoughtful stuff from Eastwood, and this approach of deconstructing the almost mythic nature of war…

Far too discursive and under dramatized to be Eastwood at his best, but he has always been very good at movies on images even if Haggis script spell things out too much (Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn covers a lot of the same territory with less highs, but less didacticism). The combat scenes feel strangely off (I wonder if the main reason he set out to make Letters From Iwo Jima was because he felt a physical dimension was missing here), but his single mindedness pays off as this might be the most melancholic World War II movie ever made, all about waste. no victory in sight. By now, Eastwood has inherited two war projects that started out as Spielberg films…

The landing on Iwo Jima sequence was by far the most engaging part of the film. The rest fell by the wayside. It was still an interesting look into how the publicity negatively affected those that held up the flag in the photo, but it glossed over much of the fighting, which I suppose is the point Clint Eastwood was going for with this one. I’m hoping Letters from Iwo Jima is the better of the two. Clint Eastwood ranked

Genuinely kind of insane that a man who has been positioned by the culture as this archetypal all-American hero would make this duology of WWII pictures a few years after 9/11 where not only is he presenting the “enemy” with just as much care, reverence and humanity as the Americans, but that when portraying the American side the angle he decided to take was this treatise on how war is used as propaganda and how our government and media exploits and dehumanizes these men, then abandons them the second they’re no longer deemed useful. This gets better every time I see it.

The first chapter of Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima saga is a finely crafted drama brimming with patriotism, heroism & war that brings on screen the story behind what many consider to be one of the most iconic images of the last Great War while also offering an interesting look at the true meaning of heroes, and presents the Battle of Iwo Jima from the American perspective. The story follows the lives of the soldiers who were involved in the raising of the United States flag on Iwo Jima, the famous photograph that turned them into overnight celebrities following which they are brought back to America to help raise more fund for the war while their experiences in the war is revealed…

To exert their victory at Iwo Jima, a platoon of marines raised a flag on Mount Suribachi that became an instantly iconic photograph once it found its’ way into American newspapers. Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford and Adam Beach play the three men lofted to American Hero status which they in privacy refuted (they were just trying to not die during combat), for them they just wanted their veteran stories of confusion and anxieties heard. The U.S. military wants to use the boys as shills to sell war bonds while the typical American media machine wants to print the glossy legend of plaster saints, not dissect the gory details of the war. Flags of our Fathers has a scattered number of…

an early entry in eastwood’s long-running series of films on guys who were railroaded, except here the guys were the veterans of the pacific war and they were railroaded into propagandizing their experiences by a wartime government more eager to exploit them than anything else.

as usual when veteran patriot filmmaker Eastwood touches a political topic, it’s tricky. critical, but not too pervasive he’s tackling US war propaganda. a touch of Saving Private Ryan is flanking the classic anti liberal hate against the sleazy establishment and self-loving elites. formally he stays in his conservative and conventional paths, creating only a distant and cold tone. the social matter is saving this otherwise scanty endeavor and – of course – on the finishing line this can’t cope without the typical kitsch of “auteur” Eastwood.

eastwood understands that america isn’t a country built on a system, a morality or even a religion, but a country constructed of images, of moments frozen in time. human life only matters insofar as it can produce these images. the actual intricacies of warfare: the bloated carcasses of tanks, the bodies half-buried in mud, the heat of a bullet whizzing past your neck; those don’t get photographed as easily as a flag. that flag will still be there 100 years later, but the human beings who raised it will be long forgotten.

This film is definitely better in concept than in execution. While I connect with the central thesis of the film, I wasn’t really gribbed by the narrative. At a point this sort of felt like a recap of this historical event. This film is also ugly as hell. I like to look at people when I watch movies, not grey objects move on grey backrounds. I’m sure Iwo Jima is gorgeous irl. Even with all my criticisms, this movie is…

Flags of Our Fathers

Victory is the product. America is the manufacturer. You are the material components. This has got to be the most underrated American war film ever made. Unshowy. Unpretentious. Painstakingly detailed and bleakly honest. Alongside Letters from Iwo Jima (itself the victim of a different sort of underrated), this is Eastwood’s Masterpiece. Here we are, looking again for more pictures… looking for The Good War.

367th movie of the year Clint Eastwood aims for Saving Private Ryan and lands just shy of it, which is still a hell of a place to land. The performances do a lot of the heavy lifting. Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach, and Jesse Bradford make the flag-raisers feel like actual men instead of faces on a war bond poster, which is exactly what the movie needs them to do. They take one of the most iconic images of the war…

I wasn’t with the first half – the battle, how it was shot. Then the film revealed itself and showed its true colors, its intent: a piece of anti-propaganda. And I was almost in awe of Clint. I was compelled, I was enthralled, and I was moved, and I sure as hell didn’t expect to be. I think I loved this.

Yes, that’s right, kids — I live in a country that is so obsessed with unconditional reverence for its national flag that entire films are made exalting the random act of shoving it in the ground one day a long time ago. In other words: who cares? A piece of fabric doesn’t make me misty-eyed, unless it’s smoke because I’m burning it.

A very unique film based on world war 2. With its use of flashbacks to after and during the war, while also focusing more on the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima than the actual battle. Anti propaganda propaganda film. Still good asf. Sad and brutal, with a bittersweet undertone of youth. Heros or not, most soldiers on every side were still kids deep down. They were just kids that missed their mother’s, fought not for their country but for their friends, played in the water, and cried.

I had so much expectation going in to this and unfortunately it didn’t hold up to my expectations 🤷🏻♂️ The film is very beautifully shot but that doesn’t save it from the lacking story and it’s so frustrating because i really tried to like it but in the end the story itself was mediocre in my opinion and the main characters feel empty in terms of acting and story build up. I got to say tho i got very emotional at the end🥺 Rating 2.5/5 ⭐️

“For my dad and these men, the risks they took, the wounds they suffered, they did that for their buddies. They may have fought for their country, but they died for their friends. For the man in front, for the man beside them. And if we wish to truly honor these men, we should remember them the way they really were, the way my dad remembered them.” A solid tribute to the Greatest Generation that may just suffer by comparison to Eastwood’s other Iwo Jima movie the same year.

I was really unsure of this one going in. I’m not big on war movies and Clint Eastwood’s films in particular don’t always hit with me. For the first 40 minutes I thought this was just going to be a visceral war movie (which it certainly is) but it quickly shifts and you realize it’s more about soldiers trying to deal with the horrors they experienced and the propaganda machine taking advantage of them. It really wasn’t what I expected but in a good way. -Betsy

Have seen this movie before, but watched it again since it had been a while. It’s a tough one to judge. The combat scenes are good/great (even with some not-great cgi).

I find what Eastwood did with both this and Letters From Iwo Jima deeply admirable, but I can’t sit here and act like they’re films I liked. visually disgusting (derogatory) and realistically the contents of the film is indifferent to the other, similar, war films that Eastwood is criticising here, it’s just got a different tone to its voice.

A Bittersweet and melancholic movie. At first I was intrigued by seing the depiction of war in the pacific, the spectacle and the loss of soldiers. Slightly disappointed with high expectations going into the film. If it wasn’t for the amazing cinematography during the war scenes I would give it less. Seeing Spielberg produced this and McDonough on screen immediately made me think of Band of Brothers. I love the cold, grey, desaturated filter. The initial beach storm sequence was great. Although it occasionally veers into sentimentality, and some of the characters could have benefited from a bit more development, Clint Eastwood deserves credit for his willingness to challenge the idealized narrative surrounding one of the defining moments in American history, presenting it from a perspective that feels far less optimistic than the one we’re usually accustomed to.

War as void. A very strong polemic against American politics and, ultimately, cinematographic form. Here the sheer transparency of Eastwood’s stripped-down-to-earth style functions as a sort of critique of the tendency of still/moving images to remain within their supposed context. The black and fiery smoke, the vertiginous succession of hazy bomb explosions, the pale bloodied bodies covered in dull splintered rocks—how can all these ‘mean’ anything? Eastwood guides us to read not the images themselves but what is between them, and I dare say that’s morally persuasive. Only a few filmmakers do their duty like him—deftly, daringly, sublimely.

Flags of Our Fathers is one of two war films from Clint Eastwood that portray the Battle of Iwo Jima. This film was the first released, and it focuses on the American perspective of the battle. A bit weaker than its companion piece (maybe just less unified), but still a good piece on the psychology of war. Definitely a story that needed telling, particularly the part about Ira Hayes. Presented in stunning imagery it’s a story that had to be told, showing at the same time fake news aren’t some recent concept created with the advent of the internet and social media.

Eastwood made two films about WWII and released them at about the same time — one from the American point of view and one from the Japanese point of view (Letters From Iwo Jima).
- Synopsis
- There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. This is the story of three of the six surviving servicemen - John 'Doc' Bradley, Pvt. Rene Gagnon and Pvt. Ira Hayes - who fought in the battle to take Iwo Jima from the Japanese.
