the nastiest holocaust kitsch out there – abject, sweet-sugared, spineless. a classic exploitation tale fishing for cheap emotions while twisting realities to deny the real horrors in order to not snub the precious audience. in this being an industrial product, it’s a sheer insult for all victims of the holocaust and a shameful irreverence of anyone involved, aswell as the spectators appreciating this.

I found this so extremely tasteless. It exploits the holocaust for a cheap movie, but even worse is how the entire plot just leads up to a German kid dying which we’re meant to find as the saddest part of the movie. Why do so many movies dealing with tragedies focus on people who weren’t affected by it or sometimes even the ones committing it? It’s insulting.

“If you ever found a nice Jew, you would be the best explorer in the world.” The Boy in the Striped Pajamas compartmentalises the entire Nazi racial philosophy into one collective idea that they thought the Jews weren’t “nice”. Then, as if its oversimplification of such a scar on modern times wasn’t enough, the film genuinely sympathises with them.

This was a complete and utter embarrassment to Holocaust historicism. Predictable, cliched, and contrived. I don’t even know what message this movie was trying to send. Friendship knows no boundaries among the innocent? To show that the German boy’s father is still capable of love despite his monstrousness?? It‘s pretty distasteful that the tragedy is not the senseless murder of millions of Jews but the unfortunate murder of one German boy who didn’t belong in the camps and didn’t deserve to die.

A beautiful movie, I really enjoyed it. I think it perfectly showcases times back then. My favorite moment is the end where the boys go to “showers” and the father tries to save his son knowing that he’s going to die. It greatly showcases how kids don’t care if somone is diffrent, and adults shouldn’t too

Le Garçon au pyjama rayé est un film absolument bouleversant. J’ai trouvé l’histoire magnifique, mais surtout terriblement poignante par la manière dont elle nous fait découvrir l’horreur de la guerre et de la Shoah à travers le regard innocent d’un enfant. Ce qui rend le film particulièrement fort, c’est le contraste entre l’innocence de Bruno et la réalité atroce qui l’entoure. Une histoire touchante, surtout grâce aux deux jeunes acteurs, mais il simplifie énormément la réalité de la Shoah et repose sur une situation historiquement très peu plausible. C’est donc davantage une fable tragique qu’un film historique fidèle, sans véritable enjeu. C’est tout de même un bon film.
