cool ass movie. so many ‘fuck yea’ moments. delightfully savage and way more psychedelic than i had anticipated. every time dredd took over the comm system and threatened the entire building, i applauded.

Most bad-ass action film I’ve seen since…well…The Raid. Similarities will be drawn between the two films for sure, but they remain their own entities in spite of the similar concepts. Where The Raid is more or less an excuse to have fight scene after fight scene (not complaining), Dredd feels like an actual story with its own characters and its own world. Alex Garland’s script is tight, and full of great moments. The look of the movie is unique and wonderful. Karl Urban was magnificent in the eponymous role. I loved how the whole story felt more or less like just another day for Dredd. Widespread conflict and global stakes were not necessary. The rookie was very well integrated into the story and provided a much different type of sidekick role than usual for this genre. In closing, this is the best comic book film of 2012.

dredd is like a checklist for all the little specific things i love in storytelling: ✓ intimidating, ruthless female villain ✓ lots of good gore without it feeling unearned or excessive ✓ tony scott dayglo visuals ✓ psychics ✓ crazy weapons ✓ heads exploding ✓ cyberpunk aesthetics that aren’t ripping off blade runner ✓ short, no-frills running time ✓ respect for the source material while also doing something new ✓ piece of shit cops who the story lets you know don’t deserve sympathy ✓ a female action protagonist with actual character growth ✓ corny one-liners before and after a kill ✓ arms getting cut/blown off ✓ an ambiguous ending

One of the most colorful and distinctly edited films I’ve seen in a while; strange and jarring, but in a good way; sporadically shocking; a very unique form of sci-fi social commentary; great costume design; relatively complex characters; the visuals are consistently astounding and the production/set design is on point; very good movie, better than the original.

Dredd walks away from 150 dead civilians and drug dealers, multiple bodies mutilated, tortured, and thrown off 80-story balconies, massive property damage, psychic sexual abuse, blown-off hands, gory eye-gouges, and four cop executions. Chief Judge: “So, what happened in there?” Dredd: “Drug bust.”

I’ll just put this out there. When is a comic book adaptation successful? Two things. It needs to capture the essence of the hero(s) and it needs to emulate the feel, tone and style of the comic. This is one of the best comic book adaptations ever made. One of the first comic books I fervently read were the 2000 AD anthologies. They were filled with exuberant science fiction stories and they produced a personal favourite, Judge Dredd. The grim, dystopian future, with a force of nearly invincible policemen, fighting colourful, over the top villains, appealed to my over-active imagination. This film has no plot worthy of any mention and what there is is rather predictable. The entire universe we…

Missed this in the theaters so watched it for the first time in 2D shorty after the film’s release and loved it. Well, finally was able to watch it in 3D and I love it even more!

FUCK. PROPER REVIEW SOON. *EDIT* OKAY I HAVE FINISHED RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE SCREAMING. DREDD IS FUCKING AWESOME, FORGET STALLONE FORGET EVERYTHING AND JUST GO SEE THIS IMMEDIATELY. Where to even start? The 3D? I was kinda bummed that there was no 2D option for this but the 3D was bearable and in places LOOKED FUCKING COOL. The slo-mo, the soundtrack, JESUS CHRIST EVERYTHING. EVERYYTHING WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. How the fuck they managed to get a dingy film to look so lush and rich with colour is BEYOND ME. The direction is impeccable. There’s a bit where some flames are reflected in Dredd’s helmet and it was CRAZY COOL and there were little bits like that all through the film.…

Much better and surprisingly more stylistic than I expected, it reminded me a lot The Raid. The slow-mo scenes were captivating and actually had plot relevance. Urban killed it and I also enjoyed Anderson’s character as well. I was completely unconvinced by the villain. I’m surprised they haven’t made more of these.
-
C
Karl Urban is amazing. Stylized action and violence that you rarely see from American studios. Influences from Korean action films are on full display. The comic accuracy is fun as well. I’ve seen this before but never reviewed it. Just a ton of fun.

Good, not great. A lot to like but there’s limits. Like the production design and feel the confines of the script/block do well to hide any budgetary constraints. I will say though, couple things that could’ve done with a little more thought. How do you get taken hostage with your own gun that can only be shot by you? Or was her hand on the trigger? The mini gun plan was suspect but looked cool. Buuut is it cool?…

Extremely entertaining, and Seriously Underrated. So disappointed this never got a sequel, or even a tv show, or a game just anything would be fine. Highly Recommended if you’re in the mood for an action movie. so greatly paced aswell. A must see movie.

Where do I even begin with Dredd? This is by far one of my favorite action flicks to ever grace my eyesight. The plot is straight to the point, fast paced, and there isn’t an overwhelming amount of information to take in if you aren’t familiar with the comic series. It does an excellent job of capturing the ultra-violent cyberpunk aesthetic. Dredd aged like a fine wine. The film is grainy and pops in color, some scenes are straight up…

I’ve watched this many years ago and thought it was a fun movie, but this re-watch was the best. The practical sets and effects stood out, the subplot of the mutant girl had a nice redemption arc, and Cersei Lannister was great. “Judgment Time” 😂

As someone who has never played what this is based on, i have truly no clue how faithful this is beyond the hyper-violence and the judge suit (The shots of him talking are goofy as hell) I like how they actually did some crazy stuff visually When i was paying attention im like oh wow this is a movie i like watching movies (But i definitely got bored before the additional judges are brought in) I like how they do…

Fire!! Consistently great action, fun situations, and some memorable characters. The visuals are absolutely fantastic in this one. The action scenes are really interesting and don’t feel too samey, which I feel like fight scenes often do. I honestly really love just how fuckin one-note Judge Dredd is. Zero character development in that man. Pure badass. Anderson’s character is really fun too and is really likable. I don’t know *exactly* what could make this movie better? But it’s missing some oomph to it. Might be that the stakes just aren’t there or something? Idk. Great stuff. Check it out when you can it’s worth your time.

Juries. Executioners. Judges. Dredd when they put the block on lockdown: I’m not locked in here with you. You’re locked in here with Me! This is a pretty cool action sci-fi flick with Karl Urban at the helm, and he delivers. There’s some cool one-liners and thrilling action scenes. I thought the story was fun, and it keeps the ball moving the whole time since this movie is only 90 minutes. I wasn’t really a fan of all the slo-mo.…

Thought I’d be judging, but I was the one who got judged. Maybe for a early 2000s movie viewer this may have been a bland by the numbers movie but at least they had style and interest behind it. We have so many movies today that are just such clear copies of this but with none of the style and it shows. There wasn’t a second that overstayed its welcome and my god the audio design, where are these people today.

My favourite action movie of all time. 95 miniutes of gritty, violent, explosive action. And all based around my favourite comic Judge dredd. I’m glad they went for a small scale dredd story, because as much as I enjoy the bigger more super natural judge dredd stories, I think the smaller scale stories work better in movie form. This movie deserved a sequel so badly, it still annoys me that it never happened. The only thing I dislike about the…

Really fun movie. I love self contained stories and I liked that it takes place in one building. Also they really wanted to use their slow motion cameras lol and I do like the vfx and visuals even if they’re a little crude and not super realistic. This shit rocks. I think it probably misses out on some of the satire of the original comics, and the climax is a little rushed, but there’s not really a moment in this movie that I wasn’t really enjoying myself. Despite its over the top world and costumes, I think it has a sense of restraint that the John Wick films (which, don’t get me wrong, are fun!) lack. The fights are unquestionably violent, but aren’t hyper-choreographed. The rogue judges…

I love dystopian sci-fi worlds, so it became clear very early on in this film that I would be having a great time. Urban is perfect as our stoic action lead. Very stylish with excessive blood and slo-mo, with the latter even being baked into the plot. Would love a sequel.

Relentlessly brutal, gloriously faithful, and still one of the best comic-book adaptations ever made. As a huge Judge Dredd fan, this is basically everything I want. Karl Urban is Dredd, Mega-City One feels lived-in, and the stripped-back story lets the world and violence do the talking. Dirty, mean, funny and ridiculously rewatchable. Fantastic!

There is something incredibly satisfying about a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be, understands exactly how much time it needs to accomplish it, and then gets the hell out. Dredd is one of the cleanest examples of that for me. There is almost no wasted movement here. The premise is established, the characters are put into an increasingly impossible situation, and from there the movie just keeps tightening the screws without losing control of itself. Mega City…

This review will not be fair. I love Judge Dredd one of my favorite characters. Ever. The entire movie from start to finish has this sincerity to take itself absolutely seriously like sure Dredd gives out one-liners full of machismo “Choke on that” being the peak of that but he is the exception given due to his clear immense confidence and experience. Does Zack Snyder wish he made this movie? It’s a solid, visually engaging action flick, though a little too video gamey. There could’ve been a cool and interesting story with the world they built, but I get it’s more interested in badassery – supported by Karl Urban’s pretty iconic line delivery.

This movie was made for the Xbox 360 Doritos Mountain Dew crowd of the late 2000’s/early 2010’s and I love it. I read a couple Judge Dredd comics in like middle school at the public library but I don’t remember anything other than he doesn’t take off his helmet and that the future is a shithole, and the movie features both of these details so I guess it’s 100% comic accurate to me lol. Brutal, Fast and Straight to the Point Dredd is a great action film that strongly reminded me of “The Raid”. It’s bloody, fast-paced and packed with creative action, good ideas and a few nice twists. The gritty dystopian atmosphere also captures some of the feeling of the earlier “Judge Dredd” film, while taking a much darker approach. Karl Urban does a great job as Dredd and fits the uncompromising tone perfectly. The film wastes little time and keeps things moving almost constantly. A brutal and highly entertaining action film that knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers.
