Synopsis

In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

Reagan era economics, corporate privatization of public services, and of course militarization of police wrapped into an ultraviolent sleazy pulp satire—that this is still as politically relevant as ever is terrifying. Full discussion on episode 10 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

Because this is a re-telling of the story of Jesus Christ, it counts as Christmas movie. No matter how many times I see this, it’s still one of my absolute favorite movies. I still pump my fist in the air when Emil gets melted by toxic waste or when the OCP executive gets shredded by the ED 209, and I still giggle like a child when Boddicker sniffs that guy’s wine–The Tigers are playing TO-NIGHT. As grotesque and hilarious as this movie is, it doesn’t get enough credit for its beauty and the real tragedy of a man’s soul being pulled through the ether and past death to become corporate “product.” A lesser movie would be all about Murphy getting back to his wife and kid, but the fact that he doesn’t really regain his humanity but merely a small piece of it, makes it all the more powerful.

Out of all the amazing, perfect things in this, by far the coolest is that the leader of the hardest gang in Detroit is a balding, middle-aged white guy with glasses who looks like a high school principal, and it totally works. Clarence Boddicker 4 Life. The GOAT movie villain. Make sure if you can to get the extended “Director’s Cut” which only features an extra gloriously gratuitous 10-15 seconds of that OCP executive getting absolutely shredded by gunfire. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Whenever I hear people say this is dated I want to slap the nonsense out of them. A company that profits on privatized public sectors taking over a bankrupt Detroit in order to pave the way for an ultra-gentrified wealth haven? This shit could have been made yesterday, and I bet the new one won’t feel half as relevant the weekend it comes out as this does 27 years later.

The Soul of Man Under Capitalism I’ve seen this a million times, as all Americans should be required to by law, but on this viewing, I realized what’s the best shot in the movie. While Robo is drilling Dick Jones with a million bullets, the camera cuts away to Bob Morton’s middle-manager buddy (“tastes like baby food” guy) getting out of his chair, grinning. Sure, he’s happy the guy who killed his friend is getting what for, but he’s also anticipating Jones’ vacancy in the corporate hierarchy. Cannibals, All!

“When people jerk me off, I kill them!” Masterpiece. Looks great, score rules, satire is absolutely on point all the way down. That employee’s excitement as their boss is about to be shot through the window. “Lee Iacocca Elementary School” as a throwaway detail. I’d buy that for $3.99 with a 30-day window to start watching with a 48-hour period before expiring upon pressing play!

The bad guy’s name is Dick Jones. The super killer robot is defeated by a flight of stairs. A man falls in a vat of toxic waste and is instantly turned into a mutant fish creature thing and THEN he’s hit by a car and is instantly liquefied like he’s a human water balloon. God, I love Paul Verhoeven.

I think the flight I was on had a censored version of this, cutting out most of the violence. It was pretty bad by the books action film. Robocop is staunch but couldn’t keep my attention for more than an hour 20. For I passed out for the reminder of my 8hr flight. Rent it

A film I’ve seen dozens of clips of over the years but never in its entirety. I fixed that tonight and it took less than three minutes for me to be fully on board; the opening newscast and commercial within the film are pitch perfect. Way ahead of its time from the first beat. They pop up again later, too! One of the best satires of televised absurdity. An urban nightmare vision of Reagan’s America taken to extremes that feel…

The original RoboCop was sadly never matched by its sequels. The Detroit depicted in RoboCop is one where corporations are consolidating their power and have recently taken over the Detroit Police Department. Although Detroit is recovering quite well in our timeline, the privatization of public services is still a relevant topic. Robocop’s Detroit is depicted quite well. The corporate dystopia is backed up by absurdist advertising and newsreels alongside wonderful prop design and solid acting.

Damn why did everybody have to die so gruesomely? I actually watched the 2010s remake of robocop, but this is definitely the far better one in terms of storytelling. 2014 does look cooler tho. In 20 years flock or elon musk is going to make an actual Robocop AI, and its gonna start the worst timeline we’ve ever been thru. BUT YAY BIG GUNS 🙂 !!!

    – Vivo ou morto, você vem comigo. Na infância, Robocop era um personagem maneiro, com filmes horríveis. Não me descia, vei.

Potential to be insanely complex, falls into temptation of making money at the box office. The visuals and the editing effects are both ahead of their time and have aged like milk. The pacing is a little funny, and it suffers from “80s iconography” pretty heavily (one liners, cringy stereotypes, “cutting edge” analog tech). Still, a decent film with a lot to say but it kind of stumbles over its ambitious visuals and action packed sequences with way more guns and explosions than it needed. Also, shout out to Leland and Albert from twin peaks

This is a great idea with a horribly put together screenplay. One of my biggest pet peeves in writing is overt dimwittedness of characters perpetuating the plot. The interaction Nancy Allen’s character had with the thug was annoying but forgivable. The lab techs slacking off, allowing RoboCop to escape is when it felt like the writing was a major detriment to the film for me. It’s clear that there is a ton of inspiration and passion in this, but the…
